Tiny boat tour - Inside a tiny ocean crossing yacht . (Class Globe 5.80 transatlantic yacht)

- This video is incredibly nerdy - if you are after sun-drenched sailing in crystal clear water among palm-fringed islands, switch over to Sailing La Vagabonde/ The Sailing Frenchman now.... :) The content is likely to be more accurate and much nicer to look at...
I was asked to make a short video about the features of the boat - initially I thought there would not be much to talk about, but even in a 19' boat it seems there is something in every corner to discuss.
This vid is probably more of interest to the other Class Globe 5.80 boat builders, hopefully it provides some chance to learn from my mistakes...
A bit about the build of the boat -
I made the boat during lockdown (mid 2020- mid 2021) from a kit of plywood and Douglas Fir parts that I bought from Fyne boat kits.
www.fyneboatki...
I've never built a boat before, and the kit was a good way to start. The pre-cut CNC pieces allow for a very accurate and quick build. Once completed the boat has proved itself to be tough, simple and forgiving to sail.
The rig is a complete set from Selden, taking a lot of thought out of the ordering process. The other more complicated aspects that are not included in the kit such as the keel I got made locally, and I was able to complete other pieces such as the stainless steel guardrails myself as I'm lucky enough to have the tools to do so.
The interior of the boat can be customised to a degree, but race rules stipulate requirements to limit free surface water movement (i.e. you have to keep the bunk sides free from perforations) and the watertight bulkheads are compulsory. Most other interior aspects are up to the builder however.
As with the other video - this is just me getting geeky over the interior of a boat - don't expect too much! I'm not a film maker, editor, or in any meaningful way a creative human being, so production standards are low, and for some reason sound quality on this vid is not as good as the Atlantic crossing one... :) - Спорт
Stainless steel washers on everything, perfect. Very well designed and practical.
I am a professional mariner. On dark nights it’s not unusual for most electronic devices to blind you. What I do is buy temporary window tint. It’s easy to cut a piece to fit the window on the radio, AIS chart plotter or anything else and put it on and off as needed.
He's going to need a wind generator and more solar he's got a hell of a lot of power draw😮
My take is that you’re a talented designer , boatbuilder and sailor but you translate it into smaller achievable tasks to encourage the rest of us to have a go and I love it.
😊
He got a flatpack kit, and is an amateur sailor. Could you explain if possible?
looks like quite a few pointy things to smack your head into, but I am incredibly impressed at this build. You've got some fantastic skills.
It must be hard to go back to that memory, I watched your grim passage and was so happy I was not on board. Thanks for your VERY hard work and good luck.
Looks like a tech zone solo sailor dream
Great tour. Loved all the detail and the things that you said you would re-think as well. Definitely on my radar. Building and sailing this would be a pure joy - between the challenges, for sure
Absolutely loved your sailing video, and hope you continue to make more. I've actually watched it many times.
Very generous Steven, thanks! You might well be the only person to subject themselves to it more than once! 😀
I've never sailed before but it interests me so much and I really like the globe 580 boats, they seem really strong and safe. Hope you make more sailing videos so I can live through your adventures.
@@thenorthcardinal nope I’m sure every builder has watched it more than once.
Enjoyed both videos. Excellent work. I was wondering, what is the head room in the highest part of the cabin?
I loved how raw your transat video is, it’s very inspiring. Your boat looks amazing. Once you’ve rigged the boat any chance you could make a deck layout walkthrough?
👍 From Chesapeake bay Virginia, you are the man ! A real man crosses the Atlantic !! A smart and cool as shit real man, build’s his own boat and crosses the Atlantic ….. 😎 why can’t I find anymore vids ?
Fantastic build, wish u had videos of the building process.
you can put red transparent foil over the display, that whats im doing with my night vision device. so my eyes have still some night vision.
Loved your crossing video. Subscribed and hoping you make more videos 🤞🙏.
I’m sure you know crossing the Atlantic is kind of a big deal, especially in such a small boat. It’s impressive, what you have done. And very inspiring.
thanks for this detailed video! I'm starting to build my Globe 580 soon)
AWSOME PETE!! Catch up soon :)
Thanks for taking the time to do this, watched your crossing video and wondered about the detail of the boat and the good and bad. This answered pretty much all my questions and more!
Beautiful build, very nice yacht. Absolutely love the Globe 5.80’s!
Thanks for sharing all your great work and your transat. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I love your electrical panel. Did you make a circuit diagram or "build as you go"? If you did make a diagram would you be able to share it? Id !oce to see it.
Many thanks and regards
Hi Peter, new subscriber here😊 Thanks for your effort to make this „nerdy“ view on your boat. Very interesting. Your electric cabinet is really propper wired. I’v seen a lot of rubbish in other boats.
May I propose „heavy duty eye bolt rings stainless“ as a usefull solution for some screwends at your sealing?
Together with shackles, ropes and bungee cords I use them in the Defender for strap, tidying and tie up tent, boxes, luggage, chairs….. endless usable for camping trips.
Beautiful little, brave boat:-) Now I will enjoy your sailing video.
The use of acorn nuts is nice for those through bolted items. What you might consider in hindsight is T-nuts. Not as pretty but, they will be essentially flush instead of protruding. I'm sure that you can find them in stainless steel. The downside is you don't get the same diameter as a fender washer.
My last boat was 28 feet, sailed from Miami to Sydney Au, new boat 52 feet. Never looked back.
Impressively thought out in detail, and well built! I sail a mini 650 derivative built with a similar mindset, so I can really relate to your video.
Thanks for taking the time to share!
😎
Very interesting video. I am fitting out a tiny yacht for ocean cruising at the moment and I got some great ideas from your boat tour. Thank you for posting and I look forward to future videos.
Thanks for video, for boat tour.
Very intresting boat.
A great tour. Loved the printed Chartplotter unit. What materials is it made from, I need to replace all sorts of ancient stuff on my boat and that looked idea.
Digital Yachts do a tiny NMEA 2000 barometer, and seperate air temp unit, that displays happily on my Garmin kit.
More room than my WWP 19. Great tour! love the 3d printed setup for the Plotter. I have the GO9 from Simrad (same as B&G) way overkill but does have AIS option. Thanks for the tour.
Great videos, keep them coming.
Nice setup, as you have heaps of redundancy except for only one charge controller? the one thing that can convert your dc power power
Enjoyed both videos. Excellent work. I was wondering, what is the head room in the highest part of the cabin?
Much appreciate the inside boat tour Peter, it was very informative. I really enjoyed your first video too, watch it twice since release. It would be great to get your thoughts on the sails & sail plans for this boat, what you believe works best after the crossing. Also an exterior boat tour. You have an interesting setup (running rigging and hardware) and it would be good to hear how you think it compares to the others.
Really interesting, thank you. I enjoyed the first video, which magically (well, algorithmically) popped up in my feed some time ago. I'm really quite surprised at how roomy she is for 19 ft. Tidy little vessel! Will you be doing a video of her outside as well? Would enjoy a tour of the mast, standing and running rigging and the like too.
Nice boat. I would like to see a video of how you built it.
Thanks for an in depth toor.
Nice boat, boat would be a swear word to a yacht mens, certainly looks bigger than than 3'3" yacht. Wonder why you don't carry expansion foam, just in case you start sinking, hopefully not but could fill Ur forward cabin and aft cabin or all ur cabin. U could mount the expansion foam cans in the cabins. Then Ur never lose Ur pride and joy. Have a safe journey God bless ❤️
I think you underestimate the value of your crossing video, as comments below also point out. It put me back at sea, including the inevitable grousing about Cornell's routing advice and seasonal weather predictions. I too would welcome an above deck tour, especially a discussion of your self-steering arrangement (and its back-up, if any). Thank you!
You can attach an inexpensive car window tint to the VHF. You should swap the powder extinguisher for a foam extinguisher. After an operation, all electrical devices and the engine are unusable.
Interesting boat, nice tour. Would you be allowed for the Globe 5.80 race, to build it in foam? ie laminated Divinycell? Would make it much lighter.. Just as strong, potentially faster.
What an excellent design, very well thought out and beautifully constructed.
You've done a fantastic job, and after the experience you've had you know what you'd like to redo to make it even better.
Not only can you travel to anywhere, you can do so at quite an amazing rate of knots!
Your build is absolutely gorgeous, and hugely capable, and has space for a travelling companion too!
Thank you for the tour. Subscribed.
Only 19 feet but very well built ocean capable vehicle - plus equipped with modern navigation technologies 👍
Interesting video about fantastic sailing machine - I am concerned about all of the thru-deck bolts protruding into the cabin especially around the companionway - one good bump of your head could result in a skull penetrating brain injury - plywood donuts/pads bored to match the bolt patterns and stuck to the underside of the deck with polyurethane would be an easy fix - sorry to nit-pick!
HI Peter - really enjoyed your video - thanks for posting it. I'm thinking of building a 580. Would love to have a natter about it if you were willing?
I was wondering what dehydrated foods did you use in your Atlantic crossing? I couldn't see all the yellow label something like Fire.... ? Also, what model of windvane do you have on the boat? I like the video's, Good luck and Mahalo
Ever thought about a bilge keel setup?
You can never have too many fire extinguishers' install an other one.
Seriously cool thanks , lots to consider ;-)
i wish there was a video showing how you made it
I wish I had done a few videos too...! I do have the blog here with loads of photos etc going right back to receiving the CNC kit through to completion. northcardinal.co.uk/category/mini580/
If you are tall there are a lot of bolts sticking down that will make your eyes water in rough weather.
No one needs a depressed skull fracture a 1000 miles out …
How did you get the boat back home after the crossing?
Thanks for this . Cannot switch off high amp users until you need ?
Nice interior what kind of paint is that in me cabin is it two-part epoxy or urethane looks very durable
very neat mate. Great boat, what did you spend?
During your crossing it seemed like the boat was struggling with some of the multi-directional waves you encountered. Do you think the windvane was the weakest link? Or could your sail plan been tweaked abit? Or just life on a smaller boat? Bottom line question is what is your opinion on the boat design?
Would you consider closing in the cockpit area for more inside space?
Nice,
Would you change anything?
Quite a lot! But mainly stuff like the main hatch to the cockpit, it's really awkward to get in and out in rough weather, also more storage for small stuff, things tend to get lost in the big lockers. In anything other than low latitudes where its nice and hot so stuff dries out, stopping water getting into the boat from waves/spray/rain or having something to absorb condensation would be necessary I think. Maybe a more thorough spray hood/dodger etc, and down below some more antislip on the cabin sole, it's like an ice rink when wet!
@@thenorthcardinal thanks, seems like the day to day comfort is what you missed, I think Don McIntyre talked about that in one of his videos. He had a few handholds around the place as well.
Thanks again and well done, all the best for your future.
@@thenorthcardinal you should make a whole video on that! I would love to know what kinds of things are wanted or needed on this little boat.
hey man love the video, how do you drink your tea?
And you said: I this boat UNSTABEL in your LONG FILM. YES IT IS.. LOLOL You build it that way. Your bed. How deed you messed that up? Your compass.....deed you have one outside? Your "Asl" ..was it INSIDE the door ore deed you have to have the door OPEN to use it from the outside? I still love your boat : ) Be well and take care. Something have to have happend seens your cannel "is sleeping".. And yuo deed NOT gave a "tour" of the boat on the "deck" : )
Looks like alot of room. DON needs to use lip04 and he will switch. If your going electric the go. Thank you
Cool boat. What did it cost you to build her ?
Google "globe 5.80" ü
Hmm batteries , not allowed ? Am trying to get my solar array sorted on my house . Can fit 16 panels need 4 more , 2x 4.8 kwh batteries cost $3k , my invertor allows for a wind turbine . Yes , you had almost windless days , you move forward , the vane turns , might have 2 omn a small 26' cat , where to put panels ?
What happened to the sailing
Its a sea surface high tech submarine.....interesting.
wat internet or wifi u use for your B&H...Sorry im new in sailing
Did the tour first , as usual see this after :-)
Very interesting. I have found an analogue ammeter is the most useful instrument n the power supply panel. My charge controller is very difficult to read and I discovered that mine does not show amps..
Agreed, the battery monitor shown in this video shows amps in and amps out so what effectively your batteries are 'seeing' from the solar vs the drain. I got a bit obsessed with power on the Atlantic crossing as the solar panels either broke or got washed off and I had to bodge them back together. Without any other source of power I started to focus on charge rates a lot!
Blue tape quick solution re VHF problem
Still bigger then Sven Urvinds boats
Where do u take a number 1 ??? hahaha...
2025: Any other planned videos ?
He sold his boat to Keri Harris who’s doing the MGR
When are you off again?
Not sure! Quite interested in the two-up transat in 2023... 🤔 😀
Bottom line - full of sound and fury, signifying very little. I won't say nothing is signified.
Bro. You have got a cool boat. All-inclusive. Go to every country in the world if you want... Strong. Just get a very small girlfriend and you'll be fine. Nothing over 95lbs for boat safety purposes. The larger models could capsize the boat so nothing personal. Purely safe boating practicing. No hate, all love ...
Yes , we all know about electrics :-)
Doesn’t look tiny to me 🤷🏻♂️
I'm sure all of us have seen the inside of them boats on video so many times I don't know why people keep making videos about it it's just a boat if you crash it you sink if you don't sink it you're lucky
Why did you watch then ?
He's clearly very clever, but all that electronics and we don't even know what it does to the biology of our bodies during waking hours, let alone on top of us while sleeping. Further he has the AIS antenna pointed down toward his body.
Those electronic signals have no effect on the human body
@@louissanderson719 -horseshit.
Just going to piss and shit off the side of the boat huh and not bathe.... gross.
All those screws you can have that many leaks😢 Uganda need more power you need a lot more solar Angeline generator autopilot it's missing a lot
