Fascinating to see John Warren one of the umpires. Part of the England team that took on the highly fancied Belgians after the war and wrote the lavishly illustrated, ' A Young Persons Guide to Staring' which successfully raised the profile of Staring among teenagers in the 1960s.

Much credit to Popstopolous for keeping his cool there, very professional. Some us may remember the infamous 3rd round of the 1977 Championships, where after a brutal 9 hours, a rogue squirrel evaded ground security and attached itself to the head of Sergio Salvadori, at one point even excreting. Refusing to give in, Salvadori stood firm for another astonishing 26 hours, before being edged out by Lien Chui. A statue stands in his honour outside the Rotherham Stareoutdome.

mmscott9 Met Popstopolous at Starefest 92 where he was doing a book signing. Lovely guy and still wearing his trademark tie.

I wish people would put Wallace's personal life behind and take him seriously as a world-class starer.

It's incredible how the match suddenly became exciting. It just turned around to be the best stare out match ever. Remarkable. Thanks for posting. Top staring.

The bee landing on his nose and no more was a lucky escape. Everyone remembers the dreadful incident at the Japanese Championship of 2009 where a Giant Hornet stung one of the competitors . The 'winner' would not accept the trophy and demanded his opponent be given the chance for a rematch. Amazing days.

My grandad used to live next door to Jacob Microberg. Back in the early 70's, i used to try and catch pigeons in the square outside without any success. Microberg would watch me from his doorway. Lovely fella.

I have fond memories of sitting on my father's lap and watching All Star Stareout on our very first television. He used to get me to memorise the faces of the Stareout legends of yesteryear. I could recognise every 250 of the first division by the time I was 6.Dad used to stare at our cat.....it was an amazing feline staring machine. Dad usually prevailed but often only after marathon sessions.

Class, the sheer lunacy of this is a joy. Barry Davis has always been a great commentator.

Just to bring you up to date SteffanLlwyd, the cat lived for another 5 years and became the terror of our estate. Pitbull terriers would rather chew off their own heads than face "Sooty". Poor old Sooty met his end on the M5 when he tried, unsuccessfully, to stare out an Eddie Stobart 18 wheeler. We left flowers on the hard shoulder and every year on his anniversary we drive past the spot and sing "Candle in the Wind". Sorry, I have come over very emotional when I remember Sooty.

Those matches before the insect timeout rule came not effect in 1998 were so brutal and unpredictable. I understand why the rule came into effect after the Mothgate incident in 97 , players needed protection , but todays game just misses something and you don’t get the big crowds you used to.

Staring these days just isn't the same since they introduced the single twitch rule. Now players of lower calibre can compete at the highest level. Legends of that era would rip modern day starers apart.

Big Sam Wallace. Good to see him …. Such a shame how it ended though. The 90s were a true golden age. Big Sam was a master of luring them in with with a dead defensive game before suddenly turning on a penny and catching them out in a barrage of aggressive trick plays. How he never won a major title was tragic. A constant semi/quarter final contender but could never quite get the titles. RIP Big Sam. Thanks for them memories.

Jacob Microberg was later arrested for match fixing. A shame, and ruined the game of staring, and served a sentence of 204 years in prison.

Wallace is a beast. I saw him in Totnes some years ago and he was hosting a training course in the town hall. He tore one poor teenager apart after about 3 minutes.

    Please read third post first.....sorry
..They stared for three days and the cat never flinched....full on grudge match. After a week the cat was in a dreadful condition and eventually dragged itself out the cat flap. Then we discovered my Dad had been dead for six days. Heart attack. But the body was so stiff, no quantity of pennies could close those amazing eyes.
I like to think of him staring down on me now.
Hmmm This needed to be posted in reverse

Ebay ticket touts put pay to this fantastic sport, as far as I was concerned. The ticket agencies have shown their true colours here. I've seen guys that have over a hundred tickets listed, still no action has been taken against them. I refuse to pay their prices.

Pretty wild to think John Warren became an ump after his time with the English stare-out professionals. He managed to keep up with the youngsters in his older years - I'm sure he had a few good years in staring in him before he retired. Great to see him make a comeback though!

Anyway one wet Sunday my Dad was particularly irked that the usual Sunday afternoon TV treat "Staring Omnibus" had been replaced with some religious rubbish. The cat came in wet and grumpy and started staretaunting Dad. Well, to cut a long story short..

Celebrity Stares was the worst. I liked bob Monkhouse, but the 'Celebrities' were crap at Staring, no interest, they were just in it to raise their panto profile.
Willie Rushton, Bobby Davro, Christopher Biggins, Arthur Mullard, Su Pollard, Diana Dors, Kenny Everett, john Inman and Lesley Crowther. These people had no shame.

Well the Esther Rantzen thing is part of her campaign to end the damage done to children's eyes caused by forced staring, but my point is she wasn't always against it. Indeed, the staring cat was one of the few references to 'The Quiet Game' on BBC1. But now she'd have Staring at all levels banned!
I don't object to the occasional celeb flirting with staring. At least it gets it more mainstream.

Is that the same cat that Esther Bloody Rantzen used to parade on That's Life?
That witch has changed her tune of late, she won't miss out on any chance to have a go at Staring. And Scouting for that matter.
But she was happy to join in the Pro-celebrity Starathon and to eke out her piss-poor programme showing that staring cat to hysterical audiences. It is funny though, even if it is the first thing that comes up every time you search You Tube for 'staring'.
