    Whether you have a KTM budget or a KLX budget, there’s something about taking a bike and making it your own. If the bike you build makes you happy, you’re doing it right.

    I bought a 2019 KTM 450 6 days new and did many of the changes you have done to your 350. Bar risers are a must for me as I like standing when off road. I have run the Shinko Cheater on the rear which I love and the Fattie on the front. The Fattie is the best front tire I have ever had on a dirt bike. Instead of buying an expensive exhaust I removed the stock spark arrester but replaced it with a Pro Moto End Cap which comes with a spark arrestor, I also had the ECU reprogrammed. I prefer a small tank bag over putting anything on the handlebars. The tank bag also helps me control the bike when coming into corners fast, Wolfman or Tusk are great. I have heavy duty tubes for the reasons you stated. I will give some thought to your recommended foot pegs. I enjoy your videos as we definitely think alike and I have been riding for 51 years.

The way you have your bike set up (this 350) is very inspiring! I have a 24 GasGas ES 500 which I love and want a KTM 350 ECXF as well. The motor on this bike sounds so good with Mike's Taco ECU!! Thank you for being you. Too bad; you that you are a photojournalist/celebrity us local regular folks may not be afforded the opportunity to ride with you! If you put softer springs in your Rekluse ring it will not free-wheel as much. The clutch engages at a lower rpm. I use six silver springs in mine. I just upgraded from the 3.0 to the 4.0. The Rekluse was a total game changer for me. Love your bike build!

    Ian, I have a '22 350 set up kind of like yours. I bought it just slightly used and it already had a Rekluse clutch, which I really didn't really care for. The seller didn't have the original, so after some adjustments suggested by Slavens I am learning to love it. It also came with just a fastway silencer end cap and power commander set up by Tacomoto. I installed the EU intake boot without reeds. It runs great and is plenty fast. Suspension I had reworked and travel shortened 34mm by Motolab in TN and I added a low Seat Concepts seat. Love this bike, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Before this I had a '18 690 enduro. Felt like I was wrestling a damn bear, too much for me in western MA. 🐻

    Ian, wish you would do a similar build for the KTM 390 Adventure from the Flex-bar items to the Scott Steering Dampener to the Recluse Clutch, etc. All would seem to improve the 390 for a beginner to handle better any “off-road exploring” lower speed riding than full bore “gung-ho” high speed “adventure riding” that you are capable of doing. In any case, best reviews as always on UA-cam for motorcycles !!!

The Beta is my go to when staging out of our cabin or going to Big Bear, Lucerne, Silverwood, etc. IMHO, the dual sport is the true adventure bike when riding within 100 miles from driveway.

    For me a dual sport needs to be somewhat long distance capable and have acceptable service intervals. Has the 350 exc in the us longer service intervals? Here in europe it is pretty much every 15 hours of riding and the engine needs a rebuild every 10-20k km (depends on usage).

      @lyubengeorgiev1751 Рік тому +3

      @davidfalgout7304 Рік тому +4

      @@davidfalgout7304 I see so many people get fooled into they are the "best dual sports" only to find out they are buzzy and skittish at highway speed cuz of the lightweight....then they read the manual saying it needs a top end every 135 hours. Thats why u see so many of them for sale with 3000 miles, roughly 100 hours.

    • @lyubengeorgiev1751
      @lyubengeorgiev1751 Рік тому

      @@davidfalgout7304 well, sometimes you just need to have a number plate to pass some miles to the dirt. It’s annoying as it can break and be lost in the wild but that is the pavement laws. Otherwise, if you have the money to do so, it’s very good build of this bike. I would love to abuse it with this goodies in a hard off road 🤫😁

    • @ant_ramos
      @ant_ramos Рік тому +4

      15h race riding. "Dual sport" mode in you expand to 20h (not more because the oil properties also start to drop). 20h should be around 2k of riding. Isn't that more than ok?
      Same for the rebuild. Bikes with 300H + and 30k without any rebuild. Just oil and valve checks.
      We cannot look at these reference guides for race conditions and apply it the same to non race conditions. However, common sense is advised.
      However, yes, for dual sport riding in the real sense of riding in pavement and dirt times all the time, changing between those all the bike, this is not the right bike for it.

    100% agreed. Great video Ian! I have a CRF450RL setup very similarly that I’ve done over 18,000 miles on. Top two mods for any of these high end dual sports are 1.) GET ECU from TacoMoto and 2.) I know other people who love them but they are not that smooth when taking off from a stop to me so I end up using it like a normal clutch anyway. I'm also running the tusk tires. They are ok off road but the goldentyre's I was running before had more grip and did have a dot rating. Golden's do cost more and I think the Tusk tires will last longer too. Love the bike though. I had the 2019 350 xc-w that I dual sported and it made a terrible woods bike. If you watch the video the bike struggled going up hill and then when Ian got it out in the open you hear and see the bike almost leap out from under him. Thats the bike coming on the cams. The motor in the 350 is tuned for high rpm hp from the factory. It made no sense that ktm did not put torque cams in an off road four stroke bike. I got stuck on modest hills due to the bikes lack of torque that I could climb on a 125. If you ride single track like in the Midwest with tree's, mud and roots you are going to hate this bike.

    Hey, I have a similar build going on my 2018 KTM 690 enduro. I’m interested in the Rekluse clutch but looks like the one you linked isn’t compatible. As someone who used to ride a 690, do you know of a similar Rekluse that fits it?

      I have and I'm currently on the tusk. The Golden's hook up way better offroad but wear out fast and cost more. The Tusk strangely feel better on the road.

    I don’t understand these new style of acerbis tanks. I thought we evolved away from this style in the 90s bikes because of bad ergonomics and top heavy weight. Now instead of keeping extra fuel in the radiator wings area they’ve gotten back to putting it as high as possible?

      I would love to try the Ktm 350/500...I flat wore out my XR250R and purchased a 2015 KTM 300 as a trail bike. I turned my old XR400R and XR628R into Dual Sports year’s ago. Lots of life left on those. Seriously thinking of getting the 350 or 500 and seeing what lasts the longest.

      @@dlrmon1The 350 is a miserable bike on real single track. You know the type with tree's, mud and roots like we have in the Midwest. It's all hp and no torque. Hated it.

    Nicely setup bike, I always enjoy hearing your feedback. To do a complete "ultimate" bike build like this with all the farkles, accessories, modifications, custom suspension (it you have it) easily adds up to nearly the purchase price of the bike itself- and probably more in some cases! Almost every aspect of the bike is changed whether that be something big like suspension ($$$$) or just a simple, shiny, $45 billet brake reservoir cover. A new KTM EXC is ~15k out the door and you might be surprised at just how quickly all of those accessories start adding up. Unless you're purchasing something very simple (like that $45 billet reservoir cover), almost every part is at least several hundred dollars for the quality parts you typically see on these. Before you know it, you have nearly $30k total into it (including the cost of the bike).
    If you want to save, but value these types of modifications, find a one/two/three year old bike that's already been setup in the "ultimate" configuration. In the automotive and motorcycle world, accessories like this don't add to the resale value. If you do try to sell your 2022 EXC that only has 10hrs and has been farkled out to the nines including proof of receipts totaling up to a $28k package at a $20k list price, you'll get laughed at and ripped a new one... "accessories don't add value." Find a two or three year old with 100hrs for ~$10k+/-- that's got nearly every accessory checked where you only have to change and tweak a few things like suspension to match your needs, and you'll do well. Those bikes are out there as a lot of folks who do these builds buy/sell/repeat every two-three years as they always want the latest bike version.
    That said, it is definitely fun though to buy a brand new one, start from scratch, and build it up to exactly the way you want (if finances allow). I know Ian's featured bikes that he's done that before too on his channel. :-)

      The reason so many are for sale at 100 hours is cuz manufacture states it needs a top end every 135 hours. They'd rather pay sales tax on a new one than rebuild it.

    Excellent video w/ a few points to make. Not all States are going to issue a road plate, the VIN will give it away. In WI; tires have to be DOT. I like your tires & would install them once the DOT's are burnt off.
    The big one is the Gas Tank; buy an opaque tank & the inspector will think it's a steel tank. The translucent tank you have would have to be protected by steel sheetmetal, not aluminum. I was told the BMW GS800 has that arrangement. An inspector will not pass the bike if he/she can see the gas level. Not all States, but some. Read what your State requires.
    The fuel re-mapping or any adjustments to the fuel system might require a dynameter test. It sounds like you didn't have to do that but if an owner is going to check the fuel settings, DON'T run a Rekluse Auto. Clutch. The dyno will burn it up. Dyno the bike w/ the standard clutch. After Dynoing, road test; then install the Rekluse.
    Finally; I wouldn't install a plastic skid plate unless the Mfr. guaranteed that there are fire-retardants added. Now I can't imagine what set of circumstances would be required to possibly create enough heat to ignite the plastic but since it's bolted to the bike, that's a red-flag to me. Another would be the cold weather shock resistance. Not only the plastic material used but if there's any filler used to strengthen the plastic besides any additives used, especially UV protection. Even the molding process can have a big effect on cold shock resistance. Personally, I'd stay w/ aluminum, plastic has to many variables for a skid plate application.
