- Honda V6 Check Engine Light (CEL) - P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Diagnosis. In this video I diagnose a flashing check engine light (CEL) on a Honda Pilot V6. This Honda Pilot had a check engine light with a P0303 misfire code. P0303 means a cylinder 3 misfire was detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM) on the number 3 cylinder. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2012 Honda Pilot 3.5L V6 EX Touring 2WD.

I have a 2013 Pilot Touring with a PC301. Took it to the dealer. They showed me a TSB dated 13-082 which addresses possible damaged piston rings. Dealer is removing pistons 1, 2 and 3, cleaning and replacing rings, covered under warranty. Just made the warranty cutoff time by 3 weeks.
There was a settlement of a class action lawsuit Soto et al v. American Honda Motor Co Case No. 3:12-cv-1377-SI (N.D. Cal).
Warranty coverage is extended to unlimited mileage or 8 years, whichever comes first.
Excellent information in your video. Thank you!
👍
That's funny: "...unlimited mileage, or 8 years, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST...". Might the dealership say "Sorry: it's only been 5 years, but you've already reached unlimited mileage, so you're no longer covered."?
Thanks Dave Big Dog! My 2011 Pilot had the exact problem and this video guided me got it fixed in an hour. The technical background you provided is just as useful as the actual repair. We need more of you!
Wow. A real mechanic who explains things instead of cracking jokes and playing music. Thanks. I subscribed.
Welcome and thanks for the comment!
VCMTunerII is the best deactivation device out there right now. I run one on my own van. Installed it at 135K. 220K miles today and running strong with very little oil burning...maybe 1/2 quart between maintenance minder oil changes. Disabling the VCM will likely reverse the oil burning, as well. Best $100 you can spend on your J35.
Thanks for the input!
One of the best explanations of how to fix something!
You've explained everything so well that I feel confident I can check this myself, "if" I had all the tools necessary. Thank you. I can now ask my mechanic to check this the proper way.
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
Excellent video has always! I installed a VCM muzzler on an 07 Odyssey at 100k miles. It has 120k on it now and going strong! Excellent explanation of the VCM system and video.
Thanks for the input!
Any oil consumption after Vcm muzzler?
@@aseemagarwal6040 none from the 07 Odyssey... Great product
@@Glenn_123 Have you measured the oil came out on the oil change? Or it is just approximation.?
What's a VCM Muzzler?
Thanks! Changing spark plug 3 seemed to work. Need to disable that vcm crap some how
Thank you, I appreciate the support!

Very detailed and helpful video. I had the same P0303 on my 2010 Honda Pilot and now I exactly know what to do. Thanks very much,
Best to know your enemy before you confront it. Great research, find and fix!
I agree, thanks for the comment Mike!
This video was very helpful to me and I had the exact same problem with #3 spark plug misfiring. The ceramic was actually broken. However, accessing that #3 plug is very difficult if you have large hands. It probably would have been much easier if I had disconnected the hot coolant line going into the firewall but I didn't what to have radiator fluid all over the place. Finally got the new spark plug in and no misfiring but I did have to use my BlueDriver scan tool to reset the engine light. Thank you for this video.
You just saved my whole day disaster.. great troubleshooting skills..we need more of you.. be blessed
Great Video!!!
Same thing is happening to my
2004 Honda Pilot (240,785 miles).
Gonna Change ALL 6 Spark Plugs and ALL 6 Engine Coil Packs, this weekend.
Thanks My Friend.
You always provide really detailed information Dave. It makes me want to work on Honda's so I can impress the owners with my "expert" mechanical skills. Of course I won't tell them I got all my Honda skills from watching your channel. :)
lol, thank you for the comment Wyatt!
@@BigDog50001 sorry I'm awaking a old video but I have a honda in my shop with cylinder 3 and 6 misfire. New Coil, new plugs, new injectors still misfires... Any advice?.(2010 accord with VCM)
Same issues with a 2011 Odyssey. They changed all 6 spark plugs and the problem disappeared. 15K miles later... here we are again. Unfortunately like you said the warranty window has closed so I'm here trying to change the plugs myself and put better ones that hopefully last longer than 15k this time. I believe my original plugs were in there for more than 50K which is acceptable.
The best explanation of anything I've heard. Excellent video.
Thanks for the comment 👍!
I love how you to try every ways to figure out the diagnosis. This video helped me inform a lot with out having to think it I just need to replace them.
2016 Odyssey misfiring cylinder three, just as in the video. Replaced the plug, which looked identical to yours. Firing all six cylinders now, and turning off the VCM to (hopefully) keep them firing. Thanks for sharing this video!
I have the 3.5 , 2009 always changed the oil , had the timing belt changed at 100,000 mi. At 125,000 started having misfire and oil consumption.
Did research and I bought and installed the s-vcm on it. Instantly fixed both problems. No more Eco mode , but No More Problems.
Takes less than 10min to install.
Oil consumption stopped?
Please update
No more oil usage
No more fouled plugs
Running like a champ
@@adamUDavies could you explain what that is?
Thanks BigDog..Thoughtful and logical approach.
Ever since GM made a VCM and it was lousy, I've avoided them from any manufacturer.
Thanks for the comment!
Big truck lawsuit against them now multibillion dollars worth of them
2015 Odyssey just passed the 8 year warranty, now having cyl 3 problem. Will replace spark plug tomorrow. Thanks!
Very clear, thanks. I didn't find out about the VCM settlement until it was too late. Hopefully plugs take care of it!
Thanks 👍!
Dave my daughter had the problem on her Pilot. It was the rings turning and lining up. So they told her. Not living close to her I do not know the details. I know Honda repaired per the recall. Don’t know if they checked all the cylinders that deactivate or just the one misfiring. I read somewhere there is a way to deactivate the system. Will have to check with the Honda Odyssey club. Anyway thanks for the video. Nice opening with Mikes coffee mug stay well Artie 👍 after more thought I’m sure they just changed a couple of plugs. It was done way to quick. Probably just to get her out of warranty. No way did they do a tear down.
Thanks for the input Artie!
thanks Dog. My 2015 Pilot has the same disease. I change the #1 spark plug every 4k and everyone is happy. Except now the #3 is lighting the dash. I'll change that one also. Beats having to rebuild an engine.
Is changing the plugs oftenly enough ? I have this issue and im going to change the plugs and install vcm muzzler. Will it go?
@@maurogelbert8557 Should work. #1 plug easy to change. #3 a little harder because you have to take the coil off. I only have to change twice a year.
Great walk through of the diagnosis. I have a 2010 Odyssey with over 150k, that just threw the p-301 code and I didn't want to just start throwing parts at it without logically working through identifying the culprit first. Your video and your approach make total sense and I will gladly use your tips. BTW, I bought the aftermarket fix to fool the computer into deactivating the cylinder management a few years ago, then chickened-out trying to use it. I may revisit installing it if I find the spark plugs in cylinders 1-4 fouled. It has a summer and winter setting, so I'll have to read and understand that if I do.
Thanks for the comment 👍!
Just came across your video, great job! I didn't know you had a channel. I have a customer's 2016 Odyssey where the local dealer told them they need to buy a new motor. Cyl 2 plug being oil fouled... and then proceeded to offer them to speak to a salesperson to purchase a new van...
Great video Big Dog! My Odyssey has the same problem. Thanks for the educational video.
Thanks for the comment 👍!
Great video. Very informative ! Were you a previous Honda dealer tech ? Thank you
thanks for sharing your knowledge your video really helped me fix my odyssey..
Thanks so much for posting my issue with a 2013… Honda didn’t do the right thing with this issue
Really good explanation and presentation. One of the best I have seen on here. Keep up the good work, thank you.
Your video is simple ,smart and logic thank you very much
Thanks for the comment 👍!
I really enjoyed seeing how to diagnose problems. Just realize how easy to remove and install the spark plugs for the v4 Accord.
For sure, 4 cylinder are usually easier, thanks for the comment!
Shop charging my $300 to change it. $100 an hour. My guy change 1 spark plug in 10 mins. Something not adding up
Thanks very much for your video..my cylinder 3 has 303 miss.. Nick Indiana
other videos are a little shorter but I'm glad I watched yours as you give a lot of good insight into these issues. 👍
Nice repair. Keeping it simple. 👍 definitely look like original plugs
I believe they were, thanks for the comment Jonathan!
Nice diagnosis lesson. Thanks.
Thank you for the comment!
Great informative information Big Dog Great to see consistent reason for failure as apposed to just fixing Completes the mystery of why this happened Never guess if possible and Job done Great job
I appreciate the comment, thank you!
Great video and really well explained
Thanks 👍!
Amazing man, you are a master mechanic.
I appreciate the comment, thank you!
Good video ,i had the same problem and with your explanation it all made sense ,problem solved
Well done and very informative. Thank you!
Thanks for the comment!
You saved me thousands!!!
Excellent video! Thanks for your thorough narrative. Very helpful.
Thanks a lot! I am sure you are a reliable and trustworthy expert. Well explained vid. I wish I can bring my honda pilot to you so that you can fix it.
My local mechanic told me he doesn't know whci one misfires but your diagnostci screen shows cyl3 misfires.
Thanks for the comment 👍!
Your videos are really good. This one was no exception. Thank you so much.
Thank you, I appreciate the comment!
Hey UA-cam! From all the research that I have done. The fixes that I have done. Dave is pretty much spot on with this video.
My vehicle consumed lots of oil. Misfired often. New plugs and coils Eco delete kit installed. Those were just Band-Aids. Still getting a misfire from time to time.
It's sad to say that the last possible option is having the engine rebuilt. Dealership got us!
Great informative video. He is definitely a mechanic’s mechanic.
Thanks 👍!
Very knowledgeable and clear explanation as always from Big Dog50001,....Can you share how to disable the VCM on the 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L .
VCM very well explained..
Thanks!
Thanks for this video it was very helpful.
At the lest it's running right for now 😂
Fantastic video thank you very much you help me fix my car.
Big Dog very detailed and informative video!
Thanks Joe!
Excellent video and tutorial, Dave. On average, how long do the coils last on the 2014 Honda V6?
2009 vcm same problem for years. Eco mode cylinder deactivation. I have 172k miles. Just change the alternator, alternator tension pulley which was more expensive than the alternator lol. Just replace the timing belt tensioner, which is external and a good thing. Not bad for high mileage. Hopefully to get 250k miles
Thanks for taking your time explaining 👌🏿
You are wonderful, best man in the world
Similar issue my pilot when I had it would start fine drive for good 5 or 6 miles then start misfiring Honda says its the back bank 1-2-3 cylinders. It felt like I was patting the gas peddle. The more I push the gas peddle, the pilot would not accelerate just just slow down and drive constant at about 20 mph. The Honda dealer has had it for 3 weeks now changing everything in steps claiming 1-800 Honda is instructing them on steps to take. They have changed air intake hose said there was tears in it and it was causing misfires, move coils and plugs the misfire stayed in back bank 1-2-3 cylinder. change a fuel line that feeds the rear cylinder bank "?" misfire stayed. None of this has helped now asking to change plugs after Honda dealer mechanic says they look good.
My Pilot is 2009 185000 miles AWD
It's unknown when last plugs, coils, timing chain or valves were adjusted or last changed.
Any theory's?
hope all good, did it get fix. I'm going and exac the same and still p0303 same paddling no power up hills flashing engine light. thanks
Thanks for the great video. Have you ever used injector pulse width to diagnose misfire? My inquiry is based on the fact that a stuck close injector would have a longer injector pulse width that a stuck open one.
Yes I have, thanks for the comment!
Same happened to me. I'd had a misfire error that was due to a leaking head gasket, which was resolved. A couple years later, got misfire errors again. I just HAPPENED to remove the broken spark plug first. Replaced it with a plug I'd removed when I had the first misfires, and voila: error gone. What a relief!
Excellent video Big Dog, thanks for the info....
👍
Thanks for the video. I have a 2014 pilot with cyl 2 intermittent misfire. Unknown service history I think I’ll change the plugs and see if that helps.
Did it help?
Thanks it's very helpful video
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks. Good patience.
👍
Excellent workmanship... I’m nitpicking I know... but you did clean up the dust on the top of the engine right ?
I think a lot of Honda developed this code for the cylinder number 3 -6 is due to the fact these may be the 2 cylinders that the VCM disables during ECO mode I’m quite sure it’s frustrating nightmare when it starts
Thanks a lot buddy, you helped me out a lot....
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
Excellent video! Thanks for making it
I have a 16 odyssey with this issue and a new plug fixed it but I wonder if Honda issued a recall.
Very well done!
Awesome educational vid… thanks for posting
Excellent resource, thank you
I followed a similar path in terms of troubleshooting. I swamped coils, no change - misfire stayed on 3. Took out spark plugs and my cyl 3 spark plug was much worse condition, swapped plugs and both started misfiring. Bought new spark plugs and installed on cyl 3/4 now both are misfiring and I am getting a P0354 ignition coil 'D' primary/secondary ciruit. Stopping for now. Any guidance would be appreciated. I have 4 more new spark plugs to replace and an s-vcm device to disable the VCM being shipped. Thank you.
How are the cylinders numbered on a 2009 Honda Ridgeline? I have a misfire in cylinder 2, but I can't confirm which cylinder that would be on my Honda Ridgeline 2009. Thank you for the video!
Should be a J Series (J35Z5) V6 in that Ridgeline (can verify by looking at engine number on front of engine block). A J series V6 has the same cylinder layout and firing order as the vehicle in this video and the #2 cylinder should be middle cylinder in back.
i just had my 2005 Honda Accord in the shop for a PO 175 rich on bank2 it turned out to be a faulty coil on the number 4 cylinder, that cost me 152.00 at a shop, it could have been fixed for under 50.00 if i had a better scan tool, so remember that folks
Good repair
Thanks Antonio!
I changed spark plugs coil packs it still has the misfire. Can that b a timing chain issue?
Great video. I have a 2013 Odyssey that had this exact issue. Any way to bypass the VCM on these vehicles?
Good diagnostics oil fauled spark plug will give ya a misfire everytime
👍
Dave, thank you!
Thanks for this informative explanation. 👍🏼🌹
What if it keeps coming around every 4 thousands km?
I’ve this problem every 4 thousands km, and I change the spark plug number 3 every time. But it keeps coming again & again.
What would you advise me for this , I took it to Honda and they asked for around 5k $ to repair the engine.
I watched the end of your video, but I don’t know if there would be a cheaper solution?
Disabling the cylinder management can help prolong things but after a certain point the cylinders can get damaged and the only real fix is rebuild or replace the engine.
Same problem -- 2010 Crosstour at about 90,000 miles
I have same problem with misfire . I change soark plugs but doesn’t help. I thinking to change coils but coil is good condition, they working straight. What else i want to check? Its must be Engine problem?
thank for video and info
👍
Awesome video. I have the same issue.
Do you recommend changing pcv valve after something like this? One would have to think it would be full of sludge as well.
Will the compression be low in it? I'm having this same issue. Someone said injectors. I've changed spark plugs already. Same cylinder in mine
I have a miss fire 2 and 3. I’m assuming I have to replace the spark plug for them?
2011 ody, 150k miles, had a misfire on #6, pulled coil & spark plug. Plug gap was way out, upper tip was gone on all plugs. Had 100k mile service done by local Honda dealer, they replaced pistons & rings under warranty at that time. Became acquainted with vcm garbage and installed a vcm muzzler to shut it off. I replaced all the plugs. Problem solved. I will not purchase another vcm car. GM’s system is worse.
Good video 👍
Thanks!
My 2015 honda went from changing the spark plugs in a shop that I never went to... To did you try to remove the spark plugs prior I said no... He was like cause it's broken, I said hadn't done anything on the engine for four years and it's fine. Then after replacement check engine light and blaming me for studder and check engine lights. ..... Had another mechanic replaced all coils all lights off... But noticed later on the day little studder when trying to accelerate at the beginning.
Hi great explanation my cuestion it's by the fire wall 1.3 and 5 and front 2.4 and 6 ?because I have 2007 Honda ridgeline and I have cilinder #5 misfire I did replace all spark plugs and ignition coil also I check the compression on cilinder 5 andi I have good compression around 150psi also I disconnect the cats and still misfire hope you can give me some advice with this problem tnks.,👍
My 2009 Honda Accord V6 (159,000) has this same issue. As a matter of fact cylinder 3 just started check engine light blinking on me. My problem has been recurring as this has happened in the past. My car is past warranty and I am now thinking that I am in the piston issue. This is what I am afraid of as I have no interest in buying a newer car as the prices are too high. I will fix and save for a new engine I believe.
But on a side note ........ did it come back?
Dave, I have an oil leak over my alternator on my 2011 Honda pilot.
What do you recommend.
Oil/fluid can move in mysterious ways, removing the top cover and cleaning things up and then running vehicle for a while to see where it is originating from can help. The front rocker arm oil control valve (AKA spool valve or VTEC valve) is a common leak point nearby. If that is leaking , you may get away with only replacing the 2 gaskets but Honda recommends that the entire upper portion of the valve be replaced (the front UPPER rocker arm control valve [have to buy upper and lower together as assembly], the metal plate, 3 mounting bolts and both gaskets). IMPORTANT: There are 3 bolts that hold the UPPER portion of the control valve in place, *this is all that is removed*. **DO NOT REMOVE or loosen the 2 bolts for the LOWER portion of the rocker arm oil control valve**, that could wind up causing misfiring and big problems.
what if spark plug or core are not the problem? . Some mechanic said it could be an valve adjustment. What is your 3rd of 4th options of this miss fired 303? I only swapped 3 and 2 core to rule out.
I installed VCM Tuner II to disable the VCM system. However, time will tell if the damage has been done to the cylinders and I'll still end up fixing those.
👍
I have a blinking check light engine Honda accord 2008 po300 po302 po303 those are all the codes misfires I don't know what it is the coils were just bought so I'm guessing its the spark plugs or fuel injectors or starter. Need help. Thanks
