We had an 8th gen civic (06-11) at my dealership that had misfires on 2 cylinders we swapped coils, plugs fuel injectors Checked compression and cylinder leak down tried ECM/PCM clear and relearn still nothing we were stumped we called tech line before we put it through for a PCM they advised up they have seen some civics with aftermarket serpentine belts have excessive metal flakes in the belt messing with the signal on the crankshaft causing ghost misfires so we removed the belt and wouldn’t you know no more misfires replaced with factory belt and took care of issue
I just did my timing belt and had a similar issue. I took it to a professional to check my timing belt, paid for his time. He told me the timing marks were not off and he saw no issue with my timing belt job. He did see multiple misfires and a rich code. The rich code was not there before hand. He noticed the CEL come on and off while he had it at his shop to test drive it. After doing this and a valve adjustment. It's working fine. I think the valve adjustment for me was the defining fix. I can't say for sure.

Tremendous ! Among the many excellent teaching methods you employ to help us learn one of them that’s really helpful is how you explain to us viewers each step of hooking up tools / equipment . Thanks for the dedication in our education !
Always a awesome case study man! I was wondering about the Launch Scan tool…were do you go for support on it. I have had one and i only found an email i could send. Im wondering if there is any us reps or support groups for it. Thanks
My scanner can detect injector pulse to see if the injector is firing fuel. That’s one easy way to determine if the injector is faulty or not or use a lode tester to see if the injector harness side is getting power! But swapping the Bad coil with another coil is an easy simple test as well thank you Eric for another video!
I was taught the relearn should be performed any time ignition components were replaced or moved. Also when replacing timing belts/chains. I've had the misfire problem with Nissan before and relearn fixed it.
MY MAN..... U ARE A GREAT MECHANIC. NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE U AROUND. YOUR EXPLANATIONS CAN SOMETIMES SOUND FUNNY BUT THEY DO GET THE POINT ACROSS VERY WELL AND FOR PEOPLE THAT AREN'T VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ON CARS THOSE EXPLANATIONS WILL EVEN MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND...LOL. I don’t know if anyone in the chat ever uses a propane inrichment tool to find misssfires due to a faulty injector or vacuum leak. But it’s a great and fast way to do it. If you find that the ignition system is ok and suspicious of a faulty injector. Use your propane inrichment tool to slowly add propane into the intake. Then watch your missfire data. Or smooth running value. You will see the counter slowdown or stop all together. In many cases see the engine smooth out. OTC part # 7148. I also use it to diagnose A/F and o2 sensors. It’s good for diagnosing converters also. Already said vacuum leaks, do that while Looking at ST and LT fuel trims.
I had a bad ignition coil after 100,000 miles in my 4Runner. Instead of buying a denso ignition coil, I bought an NGK because I was going to do a full tune-up in 3 weeks. That NGK ignition coil kept setting off my check engine light with misfires. NGK makes great spark plugs, but do not buy their ignition coils. Once I replaced that NGK coil, everything was fine. And it was even better after I changed all six with denso ignition coils.
I love my Launch X431 Pad2. It's proven to be the best overall scan tool I have ever owned. Now I have a question. Why would the Honda Pilot need a CKP relearn if it was never disturbed? Besides replacing or even just disconnecting and reconnecting that sensor, what else could cause that issue?
great stuff, thanks for headsup on think diag, got one ordered, been looking for this type of tool for quite a while, great follow up on process after u were done, and what u found on other vehicle , always great info, diag, editing is the best around, appreciate the time u take to do this!
Ha ha ha, I knew I'd learn something more, if I just kept watching. The CKP relearn was a pearl worth remembering. I wonder why changing a coil would require a relearn.
Me and eric had a discussion on this and I’m thinking that because misfires are seen thru the crank sensor. So when the engine misfires the pcm picks up the difference in crank speed and registers it as a misfire. And I’m aware some pcms shut off injector pulse is they notice a misfire on a cylinder to protect the catalytic converter. So my theory is the misfire is learned to the pcm, as protection to the catalytic converter. So to clear the learn misfire strategy a crank relearn has to be performed. Sounded good in my head when I did this
Wondering if you know of a lower price scan tool that can do the crank position relearn for a 2004 Honda Odyssey 3.5 V6? I'm old school mechanic and try to fix my own first because at the moment I don't have a shop close to me that I know I can trust or afford.
Nice story, and great result shown. Good basics, swapping coils and finding the problem followed the coil. Sad that the NGK "new" coils were worse that the originals. Following the tester box link!
This is exactly what has been going on with our problem Odyssey. I found this video from your Infiniti EVT video which is another problem car I’ve been working on. If that doesn’t earn my sub I don’t know what does.
You have some great, and kinda expensive devices there to help you track down the problem very quickly! Good for you man! Good job. I have one of these same Honda 3.5 engines with a very similar issue, and also the flashing engine light that will shut off on it's own. I am waiting on a new set of coil packs on the way. I have a basic code reader for the OBD II port and mechanical knowledge and that's about it except for tons of basic tools of course. My code reader is a Autophix. Those are very good powerful V6 Honda engines when they are running properly!
Had this exact problem. 2011 crv would act like a misfire but no codes...so I did what any logical diyer would do...I shot the parts cannon at it. New MAF, cam sensor, crank sensor, vvt, injectors... all because I replaced the plugs and coils less than a year ago... after some time I finally got a the misfire code... changed the coils and runs perfect
Just an FYI: I have an 08 Odyssey. Those have the same V6 as the Pilots...and I believe all other Honda's with a V6. Some, but not all, of those engines have VCM...Variable Cylinder Management. Basically, as you reach highway speeds, it disables cylinders to increase fuel mileage. Problem is, sometimes it decides to start disabling cylinders, even if it doesn't need to. It leads to people "chasing" misfires, and never catching them. At first, that's what I thought was the problem here. In case you have a Honda with that V6, and start having misfires, and replace everything that is supposed to fix a misfire, yet you still have misfires, it could be the VCM.
I know a mechanic that says NGK stands for No Good Krap because they only have a sixty day warranty while Delco has a 24 month warranty on ignition coils.
I have had an 11 honda accord once that would throw random misfire codes and I would perform a crank relearn and it would fix the issue' but the issue would return after a few startups. I came to find out the somehow a remanufactured starter that had recently been installed was somehow messing with the crank signal and causing the problem. Replaced the starter and relearned the ckp again afterwards and no more problems.
Good video, although i do believe the weather seat for that plug is now in the bottom of the sinkhole. It fell out of the connector. Hopw yiu can find it 😂
After all this time that you had the thinktool pro how do you like it. And what's the difference between it and the Launch tool and for someone that doesn't do much work like that which one do you Suggest to get
They are both very similar as far as capabilities. The main difference to me is that the Launch tablet is an open operating system. Meaning, you can download apps from the play store and surf the internet freely. The Thinktool is a closed OS, so it doesn’t allow you to add any apps. For this reason I prefer the Launch.
Thinktool says that this is done to make sure the diagnostic software runs faster and smoother. Also, so that the user doesn’t download any apps that could affect the functionality of the diagnostic software.
2002 Acura MDX touring with a flashing CEL, Replace all spark plugs, all ignition coils, all fuel injectors, did all new timing belt, timing tensioner and also new head gaskets with all new gasket for intake and exhaust manifold gaskets. Did compression test all cylinders have good compression from 210-220 psi. replace new used pcm, did valve lashes. Not sure what to do anymore. i tried to do the crank sensor relearn but for the 2002 model this function is not available. Please help... Any advice well be helpful.
You sir are a very good mechanic. I have the same type of stumbling shaking shuddering at idle....I feel it in the drivers seat and floor. It is very intermittent but I don't have the scan tool you have. I do have one that allows me to get into mode 6 so I can see misfires. My problem is intermittent so I do not think it is compression I think it is fuel injector related. Almost thinking of getting a better scan tool once and for all so I can pinpoint these problems easier
Im having the same issue on my 05 Honda pilot. It hasn't died yet but like you said its shaking, shuddering and stumbling. I can also feel it in the seats and the pedal, steering wheel etc. It just feels weak like it's losing power. What was the issue on yours and were you able to fix it?
Hey I forgot to mention my uncle has a 2000 Honda Odyssey and it has p1399 I already adjusted the valves also all 6 cylinders are misfiring and I get p0300 as well I already changed spark plugs and coils what do you recommend
I have an 2007 Honda pilot with the 4WD EXL navigation. Anyone who has intermittent problems with electrical go wrong with a PCM/ECM open circuit power relay code for P0685 replace the Relay for that because that will fix it most of the time or even the battery can also cause that code to come back up and make the car try to stall or jolt while you’re driving so just be careful if you have an older Honda/Acura because they will happen like that if you don’t change that relay or battery
Thanks for this great video. I have an 08 Pilot and getting misfire on cylinders 3,5,6. I changed all the spark plugs and did that coil swap trick. The misfires did not move. I am either thinking it might need valve adjusments ( if that can cause multiple misfire) or recently I used an injector cleaner and maybe that messed up my injectors. I also changed my alternaor recently with a OEM denso one. After the frist start after changing the alternator the car did hesitate and eventually turn off. But after a few more tries it did stay on and ran fine for 2-3 weeks. What do you think ?
@@leestoday after using 1 or 2 injector cleaners and 3-4 high octane fill ups, my issue went away. I even bough new injectors but now issue is fixed so I will save those injectors for later.
ECU/ECM/PCM knows when a cylinder misfires by the speed of the engine slowing down just after the module commands a coil to fire. The module can see this and calculate this speed change in microseconds. Misfires can occur from various issues; spark, fuel, too much air, too little air, timing, noisy crank signal, wiring, and module.
You forgot one more item in Honda's particularly, the valves w/ time they get tight and can caused miss fires and other problems w/ no check engine light. I was told to look at the MAP sensor value at operating temperature and anything higher than 0.85 volts indicates tight valves.
Hi how are you doing my friend I want to thank you for give us inf with your videos it really help helped us a lot , I want to asked you about a Honda Pilot 2008 the I have it’s a misfire on cylinder #2 I already charged the spark plugs and coils and I check the injectors and vacuum leaks and still can’t found the problem….what you think it can be my friend?
Hi Eric do you know if the topdon phoenix plus has crankshaft relearn I have a few cheaper scan tools autel mk808 and a xtool d7 but looking for something a bit more capable
Hello Eric I need you opinion about scan tool. Now im used thinckcar mini, so now I want to up great my scaner. Which want is the best between launch x431 2022 and thinckcar pro 2022. I see in many of you video I see you have both this model. Im a freeland mechanic or you can say diy. Lot of job I need to used scan tool so I hose you can gift some advise thank u hope some feed back
So I just bought the 431x thanks for the discount code. I was trying to graph a couple of data streams, but it only allows me to graph individual, and up to 4 is there a separate setting I have to change to allow that feature? Thanks in advance
Cylinder 3 is usually the problem with these engines. The Cylinder management turn that cylinder on and off more than any other cylinder. It will run all 6, or it will run 1,2,4,6 or it will run 4,5,6. I think this exposes cylinder 3 and the injector to unusual wear as well as mismanagement if the cms. I'm $900 into this same issue. I changed the plugs and coils at home just because they were extremely overdue, $400 in parts. It didn't solve the issue so I brought it to the dealership for a proper diagnosis. He suspected it needed a valve adjustment as it was also extremely overdue. Another $500. The issue still isn't resolved. It's very intermittent, on start up or after sitting, so I'm leaning towards fuel injector malfunctioning or losing pressure overnight. Though that job is also a bit costly and labor intensive on this engine. Thus I may try and temporarily delete the cms just as an experiment to see if it stops the misfire code. Idk though, it's a frustrating situation.
I've also experienced that cylinder 3 misfire issue in my own 2010 VCM J35 engine and have noticed in many videos where the problems are surfacing in cylinder three first. I also concluded that that is for the reason you identified. If anything is becoming marginal due to age it does seem that cylinder three is the first to expose the issue.
Awesome methodology Eric!! You the man!!! How long have you been diagnosing??? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!!!! Question... Did you by chance do a RESISTANCE TEST of the good and bad ignition coils? I'm currently working on a Civic with a "phantom misfire". These specifications might help me in my diagnosis.
Can you give me any advice on testing a waste spark coil system? How would I test that? I did the resistance test on it and checked out the ohms and it passed but I don't know how accurate that is because it is not testing it in its normal condition of the engine running...
Is the Launch X431 Pro able to graph the cylinder power contribution on 1 line? That is cylinder 1 through 6, left to right? I'm fighting a misfire myself and I need a more sophisticated scan tool!!!
Hello. Thank you for your awesome videos. I really need your help. Im in Houston and I want to bring you my Nissan Armada 2018. Im facing a limp mode issue that goes ON and OFF while driving. Its been three months now and no mechanic could find out the issue.
Hey bro, I see this video a while ago. I just changed the coils in my 2001 corolla and it was running normal before I changed them. I changed the plugs and coils because of the mileage. Now it's misfiring with the new oem coils and even when I put the old ones back in. I'm guessing I need a relearn for my car to run normal again.
We had an 8th gen civic (06-11) at my dealership that had misfires on 2 cylinders we swapped coils, plugs fuel injectors Checked compression and cylinder leak down tried ECM/PCM clear and relearn still nothing we were stumped we called tech line before we put it through for a PCM they advised up they have seen some civics with aftermarket serpentine belts have excessive metal flakes in the belt messing with the signal on the crankshaft causing ghost misfires so we removed the belt and wouldn’t you know no more misfires replaced with factory belt and took care of issue
thats crazy!!
Whoever figured that out is a genius.
Interesting to know and this has been noted in my diary

I would add that on Hondas you should do the PCM Reset that's in the scan tool, then do the CKP relearn and idle relearn.

Awesome job! How does the scanner / ecu know when a misfire occurs? Are they only spark related according to a scanner?
ECU/ECM/PCM knows when a cylinder misfires by the speed of the engine slowing down just after the module commands a coil to fire. The module can see this and calculate this speed change in microseconds. Misfires can occur from various issues; spark, fuel, too much air, too little air, timing, noisy crank signal, wiring, and module.
Wow...very good analysis...
Good stuff bud !

This man is the best 1:33
Try your serpentine belt, Hondas are spoiled and only like Honda parts 👍
I love this channel
Can you give me any advice on testing a waste spark coil system? How would I test that? I did the resistance test on it and checked out the ohms and it passed but I don't know how accurate that is because it is not testing it in its normal condition of the engine running...
Nice happy gilmore reference 😂😂
Hook up leaking detector with break boost hose. Much easier
Only thing amazing about this is the 2008 Honda Pilot had so much more engine compartment room. Unlike the 2010 like I have.
I really wish you were in California I have a bmw that doesn’t start and I try almost everything
random multiple misfires on cold start only at idle were caused by intermittent faulty crank position sensor!
Thanks for you vidéo 👍
Is the Launch X431 Pro able to graph the cylinder power contribution on 1 line? That is cylinder 1 through 6, left to right? I'm fighting a misfire myself and I need a more sophisticated scan tool!!!
You can combine graphs with the X431 Pro3s+
