I really like those writing routine videos because they really show that there isn't a "right" way of doing it, so you can try a lot of different things until you find the one that suits you the best. This was a great video, thank you for the good work.
Also, I think those times they take for themselves walking, thinking, reading is really nourishing for their work and sort of necessary to keep the creativity flowing :)
You know what... Stephen King has a "second job" as well! He has to promote the books a lot: interviews, panels, autograph sessions, films and I guess, so on and so on. And that's why I find this routine really suitable for working people. It looks manageble... think I'll try it.
Hmm. I think Stephen is at such a publishing brand level that I doubt he has to do all of that. His books sell themselves. Sure, he does interviews and panels, but I think he does them because he likes talking to people. And does he do autograph sessions? I would imagine that would be impractical, as it would cause a mob scene.
Imagine if Tabitha never dug up Carrie from the trash. It’s weird to think about that without her support, some of his most influential works would’ve never been thought of. I love both of their work and just makes me happy to be a reader.🖤
I don't believe the story as is. His personality doesn't strike me as the kind to throw his own work away. Remember, he had already rejected books that he totally kept and eventually published. It just doesn't add up to me.
That discussion with King and George RR Martin is what actually inspired me to start writing. I was one of those people who thought that one day I would write - one day I will have the time - one day all these ideas I have will make it to the page... maybe when I am retired. This is, of course, a horrible way to view things as "one day" never comes and you just lose time and accomplish nothing. Then I saw that and thought to myself, well, I may not have the time to write six pages a day, but I can write four, or three. Heck even one page a day is a 365-page book, right? It was the kick in the pants I needed. I'm now putting the finishing touches on my trilogy and have another five chapters done for my next project! So glad I saw that video and though I am not a big fan of his fiction, King has been a major inspiration to keep writing and not doubt what I'm doing (people always told me you have to plot and graph and plan and I'm more instinctual and character driven like King is - which teachers always told me was wrong. It seems to have worked for him, so I'll keep doing what I'm doing thank you!)
I started writing my own television series, and I kept trying to find a starting point or beginning. After I found his routine, the show's first season was finished strongly in about 2 1/2 months. It really taught me the answer to the question, "What do you do when the sun isn't shining?" You work, and you can't be inspired all the time, but if you focus and set in routines. You will come up with ideas, but not all will be winners, but the work is there.
Thank you for your writing vlogs!! When I'm not in a mood for writing, I usually watch your videos, and they inspire me. Please keep going. Good luck with the Project Teacup ❤
I haven't even started my first book and I have "jack of all trades" syndrome where I basically want to learn and do everything that ever existed and I'm pretty well established in my knitting/sewing skills (which take 80% of my time) so I find it reassuring that a professional writer as successful and prolific as Stephen King basically works halftime, that's a routine that I could feasibly add in my life long enough to get something out of me without being block at the wall of "I'm not of the people who writes books"
The creator of this video has such a positive attitude. The right balance of self-assuredness and self-awareness (and the willingness to self-promote, which is critical). I love working with writers like this.
I love this series on writing routines.♥️I would love to see Margaret Atwood, Amy Tan, Michael Ondaatje, Emily St. John Mandel, Abraham Verghese, Ian McEwan...
When I read "On writing", I was deeply struck by King's routine! But what really liked me was the part where he says that he likes to walk in the woods, because it helps him think about narrative and writing and such. And then I realized: I had been doing the same for years! Spacing out while listening to music, or in silence, while I walk is actually the ONLY way I get ideas and full sentences in my head. I had been walking since I was a teenager and it was only when he pointed it out that I said: Oh my God! (Of course, I am nowhere near his skills). I love how you keep experimenting. Truly, finding your channel this year has been one of my highlights in media watching. I hope you get a good winter
While his work has never really resonated with me personally, what has is King's own passion for and dedication to his craft. After 50 years, you can tell he still puts his heart and soul into everything he writes and loves every moment of it. Another awesome video, Christy! I was wondering if we'd ever see you try King's routine.
Oh would you try Maya Angelou's routine. She used to get a hotel room and would start with a glass of sherry. If your budget and comfort zone allows (or not, try new things) visit a hotel and write from there according to Maya's schedule
Something I have also learned from Mr.King is to not limit yourself to one genre and to explore stories outside of your comfort zone, its like in music with effect pedals, “you may not use every effect you mess around with, but it’s a tool to keep in your tool box.Sometimes the right tool is the one you didn’t know you needed.
Please keep doing these! I've been following along and doing them myself and its helped me keep my writing routine both consistent but interesting because I can try new approaches instead of doing the same boring thing every day, and it makes me feel like I'm not just alone writing in my studio but writing along side these other authors.
kilometers! celsius! it's cold in July! I really do love to watch creators who are in the same hemisphere as I am. this was lovely as usual. glad you got to wake at a reasonable time for this one :)
Charles Bukowski next. Betting on the horses during the day, drinking wine, listening to classical music and writing by night. Do it. I believe in you.
I agree that going for a walk or reading or lying in bed and thinking for long stretches of time are a luxury, but I wouldn't qualify them as leisure activities for a writer. I always find that when I can fully engage in such activities it helps with my writing, especially with the problem-solving aspect to it, to the point that I now consider them part of the process.
I'm gonna suggest one for an author that I don't even know if she has a writing routine but she's an author I really admire so here we go: Diana Wynne Jones.
I’d love to see a Nora Roberts writing routine. She’s sold more books than King, so she’s definitely the queen of romance. If you haven’t read her, I recommend Montana Sky or the Chesapeake Bay series for her romance newbies.
My understanding of the hour walk in the morning was for King to focus on the writing he was going to do. I also read somewhere that he thinks about the story before going to bed at nights as well. A definite challenge you faced was the fact you're a creative in your day job. I think some of his process, like the walking and thinking of the work can be something you do when you're not writing and doing your day job.
Christy, your video was incredibly helpful! As a first-time novelist, I initially felt overwhelmed by my hectic schedule, but your insights have eased my concerns. Thanks a lot!
Really the difference is efficiency. Odds are 3 hours of writing by King results in a WAY higher percentage of "good stuff" than 3 hours for me, or really most average or even above average writers. The more telling part is the 6 pages per day. He goes on in that same interview to say 6 "finished" pages meaning far fewer rewrites than for most of us I would imagine. I know that for me to get 6 solid finished pages I need to write maybe 3-4 times that many. That takes me longer than 3 hours generally speaking. But still, great video and a good exercise to try new things and see what can help us and what might be a revelation for us.
I adore seeing you trying these out. I imagine it's exhausting, but also gives you insight. Then you can properly pick and choose the things that benefit you. So cool! Also yesss Polyphia. They're from right here in Dallas, Texas, where I live! They're amazing. Like another artist I know... 🖤
I recently started reading his books in order of publication. Can’t believe I waited until my 40s to start with King - they are great reads! Go for it!
This sounds similar to the fact that Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Einstein (among others) had routines they developed that worked for them. IMHO, it's having the routine & not accepting any interruptions that is the key to it all, of course some talent helps.
This is such a great series. I always wondered how many hours King spent generating new copy, and *two* (2) out of four to get to his intentional six/day just shows how masterful he is. I love his tip in On Writing to stop in the middle of a sentence he's already formed in his mind to get him writing the next day - he knows exactly what he's doing from minute one. Good, practical advie
I love your writing routine videos! Also it was funny to see how bundled up you got for an 11 degree day (after I did the conversion to F lol), that's a perfect fall day in my neck of the woods! 😉

Can't lie, my brain thought you were about to put your shoes in the fridge at 12:13 lol gave me a good laugh! I love your videos and have enjoyed following your journey. Keep up the wonderful work, cheers! ✨
When you bundled up for your walk, I was thinking that’s crazy. Where is it that cold? It’s ridiculously hot this summer! Then seeing the trees, I was thinking okay she filmed this earlier in the winter and is just now posting….. It took me another 5 minutes to remember hemispheres are a thing and our seasons are different……😂
I I'd like to see the writing routines of Ernest Hemingway, David McCullough, Amy Tan, Barbara Tuchman and Winston Churchill. Now there's a night owl writing routine! Keep up the good work! You're doing a great service.
I love to do everything in the morning - and that's my problem! I like to walk, do a Pilates class (at home), clean, do some washing, water the garden, make breakfast AND write - but I want to get it all done by midday. It's clearly impossible and I end up pushing back the last item on my list otherwise I feel unproductive. I think I'm going to need to start getting up around 3am.
Love your videos, especially your project teacup writing vlogs! Sending love and inspiration your way!❤❤❤ Also the Aurora and Polyphia music taste is imaculate
You are so enjoyable to watch!!! My goals for 2024. I want to FINALLY start writing at least one of my stories. And I want to be reading 100 books next year (2 books a week). I am currently a customer service rep (remote) at Williams Sonoma. I enjoy it, and can definitely see myself pursuing a training position there. Anyway, life goals. I am only 37. Can always live better!
Also, I love that it looks like you have quit caffeine. That is so amazing for productivity. Few people really appreciate how much going for coffees, etc., destroys productivity. Oh, and I'm also married, with a 4 year old son. So the above goals are just for me. :)
In 2017 I read a book (which I wish I had kept) called Daily Rituals: How Artists Work. Over 150 artists/writers/etc. outlined their daily work routine, it was interesting. The only Stephen King book I've read is On Writing (I'm not one for horror), but I can see why he sticks to this routine.
Awesomeness!! 📖 📚 ✍️!! I'm glad the adapted writing habits is not from the "It" era! As mentioned, I think, in On Writing. Quite humbling part as well, like considering writing and selling for urgent financial need at one point. Good note to write soon, early, often so it can be snowballing at some point...
Can always go the Robert E Howard method. Step 1: Believe that Conan is behind you, ready to cleave you in twain if you do not write. Step 2: Proceed to write through the night until exhausted and the sun rises. Step 3: Know that Conan will return come the night, and fortify yourself for the session ahead. Step 4: Avoid step 4. It involves shooting oneself.
(Sure, it's all fun and games until the van comes along.) I may give it a try. Though you mention other authors, I probably need to see what the other options are. Lastly, good gosh, but you seem so familiar. I think it's the accent/mannerisms/hair casting an "Elizabeth Henstridge" shadow. Well done. Good luck on the Teacup.
I also try not to be on social media in the morning! I listen to podcast or an audiobook. That gives me the mailing I’m looking for, but doesn’t take away my attention or hurt my eyes, right when I wake up. :)
As I'm making my way through this video I'm picking up on things. If you want to be like Stephen King, keep this principle in mind: forward momentum. Ever notice how the endings of Stephen King's books usually just trail off? That's because as he's finishing one book, he's already conceptualizing the next one in his mind. That's how he pays the bills. Let the editor clean it up. They have a specialized skill set for that task, just like you have a specialized skill set for creativity.
omg your glasses are so beautiful and suit you so well 😍 I mean you're really beautiful with or without but I've just never seen you with glasses on before 😄 queen.
You listen to a song so many times, do you not feel sick? Do you not feel genuinely tired of listening to music? Or is that just me. I also listen to music while writing and I listened to the same playlist over and over and over again even outside of writing. When i listen to it, the playlist brings back feelings i had when i made it and also makes me remember the feeling/story of the book. But I also just can't do it anymore, After 1-2 songs i get a mix of sick and incredibly bored and have to shut it off. not so much for new stuff, but def for the stuff ive been listening to.
I suspect that’s because you’re actually listening to the music. Maybe try a new piece of music with no associations, other than the idea that it will enhance your concentration/creativity. Your brain will assimilate that intention subconsciously until it becomes a subliminal stimulus for creativity. I write ghost stories, and have a 2 min piece of music that I used as background for one of my videos. I put that on loop and it’s become an ‘encouraging white noise’ for me. You could make an impersonal ‘soundtrack’ for your project and use that. Good luck.
I love these routine videos Christy! ✨️ I feel like this is a routine I could really apply! Except I'm with you~ I'd prefer to get up just a wee bit later! 😅 Ah I am so excited for your fantasy novel!! ☕️💕
I don't know if you've mentioned this before or have been asked: do you write on any specific writing software? To help you track your progress and such?
i also tried his routine..it is good and his writing routine is not that much heavy. Love your videos christy ...always excited and waiting for your videos..😍😍😍
One more thing: you can't rely on writers' self-reporting of their routines. Professional novelists are artists, and that's hard work. They will often whitewash or romanticize the laborious and sometimes agonizing nature of their craft as a defense mechanism. No one wants to say, "Yeah, fuck this book. It was a grind. 10,000 words in, I knew I had painted myself into a corner and I dreaded opening up the document every day."
imagining Stephen King putting together the most grotesque narrative ever while listening to mambo No. 5 is sending me
i thought of the same thing 🤣
I really like those writing routine videos because they really show that there isn't a "right" way of doing it, so you can try a lot of different things until you find the one that suits you the best. This was a great video, thank you for the good work.

Honestly, I'm shocked at how lowkey and unchallenging this routine is! Shows that productivity can be simple!

Step 2: Proceed to write through the night until exhausted and the sun rises.
Step 3: Know that Conan will return come the night, and fortify yourself for the session ahead.
Step 4: Avoid step 4. It involves shooting oneself.
He also wrote the short story Shawshank Redemption my favorite short story when I was in high school.
I would love to see Margaret Atwood!
I love your videos !
Love this! On Writing was the first thing I ever read of his and it left quite an impression on me as well! Beautiful video as always ❤️
So excited to watch this! I really wanted this video! 💖💖
Thank you very much 😊
omg your glasses are so beautiful and suit you so well 😍 I mean you're really beautiful with or without but I've just never seen you with glasses on before 😄 queen.
Excellent. Thanks!
I had a good writing day the other week. i wrote 23 pages, i was on a role, wish i could do that every day. Good video.
11 degrees is summer weather in my country 😂
"Take your vitamins" yeah, Stephen King sure took a lot of "vitamins" back in the day as part of his writing routine.
I'm up at between 1am to 2am and I'll trudge on till 5.30am. I rest and do other stuff during the day.
I don't know if you've mentioned this before or have been asked: do you write on any specific writing software? To help you track your progress and such?
I write on text documents on Windows XP. I can always click and paste to word to check my word count.
i also tried his routine..it is good and his writing routine is not that much heavy. Love your videos christy ...always excited and waiting for your videos..😍😍😍
Thank you for sharing! ❤
10,000 words in, I knew I had painted myself into a corner and I dreaded opening up the document every day."
writing is a meditation. good for the soul
My partner and I just discovered your videos and love them! Also may we please have your pancake recipe? they look super tasty. 😀
