When I write my stories a lot of them are set in the region that I grew up in. Prominent things featured from my hometown is the abandoned mall and the small theme park on the hill that was condemned another aspect is a lot of my stories are set in the 90s or early to mid 2000s ( though I have stories set earlier and later)

Really disappointed with this one. Almost nothing from this book stuck with me the moment I was thankfully done with it. The problems ultimately come down the characters. Susannah is just not a compelling character and I had little interest in what happened to her. Roland, Eddie, and Jack aren’t much better. It’s sad considering just how long this series has gone on that I’m so unmoved by their stories. The scenes with King are pretty cool but everything else went in one ear and out the other. I’ll read the final book but unless it blows me away, I’m going to come away either with this series being a very long but minor King work

Sorry, I usually find your take agreeable...but I couldn't disagree more, especially where that ending is concerned: its a complete betrayal of what those characters just went thru...what they FOUGHT.....HARD for... The ending of the novella is, at the same time, one of the most bleakest, yet also cautiously optimistic endings (and, as we all know, endings are not always Kings forte) but he nailed that one; his own perfect little Twilight Zone. Then Darabont 'leans into' that line, basically a mere thought...and makes THAT idea become real...............seriously ?!? Nope...sorry...glad y'all enjoy, but I'll stick with the actual story

    • @DaveReadsKing

Fair enough! As you know I loved it and King has gone on record of saying he did too, but I totally get preferring the story version…as you said, also bleak!

I feel like the movie kinda missed the point of the short story. 1408 isn't haunted, it doesn't care about the state of your soul. Being an unbeliever might protect you from other things because your belief is something they interact with. This doesn't. It's a creature, something Lovecraftian, something that doesn't give a damn about you. Something that's just *wrong*

Solid, SOLID read, this one. Enjoyed it more than The Talisman. Seemed more evenly paced, and the plot more ugly and adult in nature, compared to the somewhat “lighter”, more YA-inspired adventure-style story the Talisman was. The town of French Landing and its citizens really made an impression on me, particularly the members of The Sawyer Gang. Henry Leydon was always fun to read as well. But Jack Friggin’ Sawyer, man. What a guy! I quite liked his and Henry’s friendship too. Special shout-out to my man Wendell - you’re an absolute turd of a human being and I love it. Keep on keepin’ on (and you’ll keep on getting hit in the head!) The Fisherman’s crimes were incredibly disturbing in nature - painful to read at times in fact - and the way they impacted everyone’s lives in the small town was harrowing to witness (on the wings of Gorg). Everything and everyone had fitting conclusions to their stories though imo.

I watched this one fairly randomly on a streamer a year or so ago having read the novel in my late teens and keeping a vivid memory of this great story. It was the color version unfortunately. I expected not much from this having heard nothing about this adaptation. What a wonderful surprise of a viewing. And that unsuspected ending caught me off guard and I need a good 15 minutes to recover from it. Brilliant choice. No surprised king approved. Too bad there’s no other Darabont king project planned.

Read it when I was younger, and it didn't make much of an impression. Literally just gave it a re-read, and I have to say it's warmed up on me. It's slow sure, even plodding. Also, I think King being so toung at the time hurt his impression of someone in their 40s, grieving for the liss if their child, failing to adapt to a changing environment, and basically having a midlife crisis. That said, that crisis, (not the energy crisis, mind you) is the strength and the weakness of the story. I find that when Bart is interacting with someone else (be it Drake, Mary, ir the mobster) the book gets infinitely more interesting, whereas when he is alone inside his own head that things start to get depressing and boring. The action scenes are unfortunately short and sparse, but whwn they happen they are great. The mescaline trip at the new years party is a hoot. This book smacks of middle aged (or older) white guy unable to adapt to social changes energy. Its possibly an inspiration on the film Falling Down, and just about every angry white guy complaining about "wokeness" online.

I forgot I threw that idea out there, so that was a nice surprise.🙂 I think I agree with all your choices. And yes, overrated doesn't mean bad. Two that I would add are: The Long Walk (I often see this in reader top tens and I just don't get it), and The Green Mile (take away the fact that it was serialized and had a memorable movie adaption, and I feel that there is not much too it.)

You are 100% correct about the Stand. I love dystopian novels, and the Stand really disappointed me. The two most important characters that represent good and evil were not fleshed out much and the ending left a lot to be desired.
