    I played 5e a couple of years before trying my hand at Dungeon Mastering, but man, I just couldn't "get into it" though I loved the essence of it. Luckily, I found Mörk Borg, Mothership, and ShadowDark which suited my style of DM'ing much better, and thus the players enjoyed my games far more as well. Not to mention that the players were new to TTRPG's and felt quite encumbered by 5e, whereas the other games went much smoother. Am awaiting my own DM to run some 2024 D&D for us so I'll get to try playing it before (potentially) DM'ing it myself. Until then, I'll stick to other, OSR options.

      It's great stuff for new Game Masters. Like I say, I wish I'd had it 10 years ago though.

    From what I've read of this DMG I really feel like it's a good DMG but the 2014 DMG is a great compliment to it with more alternative rules and tools like the dungeon generator. It's a real shame that the old one will go out of print and not be available to newer GMs

      That's a good point. And a reminder to get the books you enjoy while they're still in print! Having a hard time tracking down Forbidden Lands myself 😅

    Ive always liked trying new game systems. Cut my teeth on 2nd edition AD&D but loved delving into warhammwr rpg, legend of the five rings, shadowrun, andmiddle earth role-playing (MERP). Took a long hiatus after 3rd edition but came back and was drawn in by the cornucopia of independent games! The moral of my tale cut your teeth on a game you like expand and explore. Play with friends, bring in new players and play with other groups. Have fun and avoid that crazed eye beared dude in the corner of the tavern...hes gonna send you on a one way trip to the dolmenwood 🤪

    Hm, I skimmed through "So you want to be a game master" and found the advice in the book to be a bit too specific to D&D; in the end, I decided it wasn't for me, especially since I already some of your other recommendations such as ICRPG Master Edition, EZD6, and Knave 2e (all great BTW).

      That's fair. I thought it had some good information on approach to things like encounter design, or travel mechanics. But it is very 5e oriented.
      Those other books I named have a much broader scope though for sure.

    I too didnt want to support Hasbro after all the things that had happened lately. but I caved in and ordered the new DMG back in august.. and the day of release I got a mail from the store I ordered it from saying they cancelled the order as they didnt get enough books. So fate reached out and decided that I didnt need the book and talking to my gaming group it seems no one else is intressted in the "new" rules ^^ Next year is the year of new games for the group

      Sorry you didn't get your book, but glad that it worked out anyway. There are so many new games to explore. I hope you find the ones that work great for you and your group!

    The 3.5ed DMG and the Pathfinder 1ed Core Rule Book are better 😁

      @ElderGoblinGames  Місяць тому +1

      That's good to know. Are they geared toward just Pathfinder examples, or are they loose enough for New Game Masters to use with any TTRPG? Just curious.

      @@ElderGoblinGames I think 5ed might be better for beginners. I've been playing D&D for decades so I like the depth of D20, but there are so many options it's probably intimidating for new players/DMs.
      5ed is like a stripped down version of D20, from what I understand.

    The new D&D dungeon masters guide 2024, is pure WOKE shit. Not worth the money, its pure trash🎉😮

    • @ElderGoblinGames
      @ElderGoblinGames  Місяць тому +1

      🤷‍♂️ I thought it was fine. But I'm mostly looking at it as a resource for new game Masters, not whether or not it has some imagined level of 'woke-ism' whatever that even means.
      I'm increasingly of the belief woke is just a word people slap onto anything that doesn't 110% fit their imagined expectations so they can have an uniformed opinion of something without having to articulate an argument about it, but to each their own.
