Rogue Like games do *not* have a meta progression element. They are named after the eponymous "Roge", which has games like Hack, NetHack, and the like in the genre. The correct term for Darkest Dungeon and Rogue Legacy and the like are "Rogue Lite" games.

I have totally coopted the Heart system! For the newest version of my personal RPG-- Pasts, Personas and Prophecies I have "Prophecies" (essentially callings). Some of these prophecies are "Revenge", "Destroy", "Protect", etc. Rather than the players choosing the beat, the group rolls on the table twice for their chosen prophecy story arc. Those are the beats they are currently working toward in their group's journey. They can then reroll one of their prophecies at the start of next session if they are not into one of them. I originally did the individual prophecy (one for each PC) for my first west marches game BUT I found that having a prophecy for each PC was too difficult to maintain. Instead, my key learning was that a prophecy is a good way to help guide sandbox play for the entire group with short term goals towards a story they are interested in.

Having a faction building mechanic seems like a no brainer that should have been picked up on way earlier.

What a great conversation! I will second that Quinn's Quest videos are awesome and hilarious! I also struggle to tie events in the game back to character backstory. Luckily, my current game has very light back stories.

The point buy system similar to Shadowrun is something I always wanted brought to fantasy. I’ll pick this up.

The company idea has always felt like a good reason to make the game a military campaign, where the PCs may not even like each other or want to be doing what they're doing, but they're soldiers, and they've got their orders.
