My grandmother grew up non-Mormon in Utah, then moved to Boise. She gave me a piece of advice back in the 80s that I've never forgotten: "If you invite a Mormon to a party, the first thing they will ask is 'who else is coming?' What they are really asking is whether there will be any other Mormons so they know whether they can drink or not."

I remember for a stint my household had a "tea phase" but it was herbal tea. I figured hey its not caffinated, so I would make myself one cup a day. Then my step mom got angry accusing me of drinking it all (she was the one who would have 3-4 cups a day) then she invoked the WOW and no more tea in the house because she accused me of doing what she did 🙄.

Hahaha! Your laugh, and complete inability to keep a straight face at the 6:35 mark when talking about how accurate Mormons claim the Book of Mormon to be was freaking priceless, and just had me dying! 🤣
Thanks for answering these questions, especially the one about caffeine. I had heard they couldn't drink caffeine, and I'd heard they couldn't drink hot beverages, and I could never get a straight answer on it. So, I really appreciate your clarification.
Thanks, too, for such an awesome channel! I'm here after a really scary experience of having been stalked by a Mormon very interested in me, despite him being very much married! I may be able to clarify the whole no coffee/tea thing further. Around the time mormonism formed, something called the temperance movement came to be. It was basically the belief that consuming hot liquid was bad for one's health, and many people, not just mormons, thought that. Joseph Smith then -wanted to add more to his religion- received revelation that hot drinks weren't great for you and that it's recommended, but not required, to avoid hot liquids. Over the decades it somehow translated to a requirement, then to no caffeine, then to no coffee or tea specifically. Some believe that it's the tannens (I believe that's how it's spelled) found in coffee and tea that make it bad, even though tannens are found in grapes too and those aren't banned. And others believe the banning of coffee and tea is just to test their faith on something arbitrary, which, well, I feel is somehow worse than the tannens thing. Anywho, I hope this helps.

    • @crow_feather

@@pimo2520 Oh! You're awesome! Thanks for such a great explanation! That makes a lot of sense as to both why I saw so much confusion as to why I was reading so many mixed things as to whether it was hot drinks or caffeine! I would agree about it being something arbitrary to test their faith being worse than if it was no tannans (lol, or however you spell it!). It's like...at least if it's because of the tannans, there's some kind of vague reasoning behind it, no matter how ridiculous it might be. But, if it's just something random added to test their faith, then that's just being controlling for the sake of being controlling, which just adds to the cult mind control Mormonism is already far too guilty of, anyway!

It so delights me to hear your conclusions in this videos, especially since you were a hard core Mormon. I made different life choices than you when I left the church. I left over 2 decades ago. I remained single, haven't had kids, and I joined the military. My childhood was different too. I grew up on the East Coast, before internet and social media, with zero to 10 Mormons in any of my schools through all the grades. The public around me either didn't know what a Mormon was or we were the multiple wives religion. My parents separated and divorced when I was 6 to 8 years old. My father excommunicated during that time. My mother remained devout Mormon Woman as a single mother of four until she died when I was 14. I finished out my childhood with my dad who acted more like a roommate than a father. I decided to keep going to church because I believed that was what my mother wanted me to do, even though my dad stayed out. I was as devout and hard core as I could be as a child Mormon dealing with my circumstances and I had flaws. Oh lord knows I have flaws because my siblings won't stop making me aware. I stopped going to church in bootcamp because I knew I couldn't do the military and be Mormon. Such an odd conclusion for someone who was born into the one true church where families are forever, except mine.
I still came to the same conclusions on all the points that you made in this video. It is so delightful! Regardless of all the fallacies of the LDS church

Recently the LDS Church removed the restriction to not get tattoos from its "Strength of Youth" pamphlet. It seems to me, as tattoos don't carry the same stigma with younger generations as they do with older generations, that tattoos may become the next internal cultural battle as to whether it's prohibited or not. (Maybe similar to the debate over whether caffeinated soft drinks were allowed from a generation or two ago.)
As anecdotal evidence, (and acknowledging the limitations of anecdotal evidence), two of my nephews - who are full believing, all-in, temple recommend holding, 20-something, active LDS members - were recently talking about the change. They thought it was pretty cool, and even seemed a little excited to consider perhaps getting one some day. Their father interjected to clarify that even though it's no longer in the pamphlet, the LDS Church does not approve of its members getting tattoos.

Because Mormon beliefs about God and Jesus are different enough from standard Protestant trinitarian beliefs that they are considered to believe in a false Jesus, and since they don’t know the real Jesus, they can’t be saved by Jesus. There’s plenty of Protestants, particularly Baptists, who assert that Catholics aren’t saved either, so it’s no surprise to me that they’d say the same about Mormons. The line on how “right” your beliefs have to be to be “really saved” is a topic of much debate.

Namely, that sounds like a big skip over the Plan-of-Salvation mess. Also, doesn't that go against the whole Infinite Souls In, Infinite Souls Out system set up by said plan, all that pre-destiny nonsense, and the age-old "God made you" concept?

Women can be sealed to more than one man after death because of a pioneer story. There was a woman whose original husband died crossing the plains I think because of some heroic act. She later remarried, but I think the first husband was like her "true love" or something, because the prophet at the time (possibly Brigham, but he's not the bleeding heart type, so I'm tempted to say it was after him) was so moved that he declared a woman could be sealed to more than man in death to those she had been married to in life so she could have "maximum agency" in the next life. I always interpreted this to mean that even though she was sealed to more than one man, it was only so she could choose which one of her earthly husbands she would ultimately "belong" to. If I can find the story, I'll post it here.

Its not a good argument but mormons at least have an excuse for why women can't have the priesthood. I have yet to hear an excuse for why women can't be sealed to two spouses but men can. _Word of Wisdom_ in a Nutshell: Coffee and tea are _generally_ prohibited. _However,_ some people have proposed (in the absence of scriptural explanation) that the prohibition is because _caffeine_ is a potentially addictive drug. Therefore, _herbal_ tea is allowed at any temperature, _but_ even decaffeinated coffee still is not. Hot chocolate, despite being inherently _hot_ (which is specifically addressed by the Word of Wisdom) _and_ having low levels of naturally occurring _caffeine,_ is still allowed. Beyond all that, based on the aforementioned and inconsistently enforced Caffeine Conjecture, some people also avoid caffeinated _sodas,_ despite the fact that they tend to be served _cold._ PS. No booze, smokes, drugs, etc.
The _Word of Wisdom_ is a perfect example of what happens when a scriptural passage and/or commandment is vague in its reasoning. People start to ask, "Why would God make _that_ a rule?"...because rules are easier to follow when we understand _why,_ and people expect God to be sensible, despite being frequently reminded, "His ways are not our ways." In the absence of any _rational_ explanation, people invent _rationalizations,_ which then result in a complex set of _more specific_ rules...and exceptions...some more absolute than others.

They've been really illuminating and it feels a little like I have another woman in my corner while I navigate through a new relationship with a Mormon. I guess a question I could ask is do you have any advice for someone outside of the church who's dating a Mormon? Things to look out for or tactics the church has to rope someone in?

Hey Lex!! I came across this UA-camr by the name of Liza, she’s an ex Mormon and she made a video about how serving a mission is pretty much labor human trafficking. I think it would be cool if you add your input on the video because she covers so much and I learned a lot from that video being an ex Mormon myself.

Also, I love how you state your mid~video reminder CTA for us viewers, if you don't mind, I'd like to borrow your verbage for CTA. I subbed, liked & am leaving ya a comment! I saw your interview on Cults To Consciousness this past week & it led me here. Wishing you the best! ~ ☮& ♥~ SmilingOma333 🙂

Calling the BOM the most correct book on earth is tricky. The BOM doesn't address a lot of things, like math. So could a math book less correct than the BOM? The topics don't overlap... so how can one be considered THE MOST correct book?

I was at my nephew's birthday party today. And my brother-in-law's mom is a convert (married in the temple here). But I was telling her how much I liked the Giant Eagle brand iced tea. She continued with I can't have that. I immediately remember D&C 89, and then asked if it had caffeine.

Yes, BYU sells caffeinated beverages and last I checked BYU is overly strict compared to the church.
Mormons drink/eat chocolate. Chocolate has caffeine… and ALCOHOL! …in trace amounts.

2:10 Definitely a good point, though it depends on how far back on the family tree you want to go. Most academics would say the three main branches of Christianity are Roman Catholicism, (Eastern) Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. So if you go that big picture, Mormons would be considered Protestant. If you zoom in though, it is more properly a Restorationist denomination, of which many (including Jehovah’s Witnesses) arose out of Protestantism in the 1800s during the “Second Great Awakening.”

    • @annelliott1384
      @annelliott1384 Рік тому

I was going to comment that I’d consider Mormons to be Protestants, in the sense that their parent movement was Protestant and not Catholic. The Protestants contain everything from High Church Lutherans to Low Church Pentecostals; Mainline Protestants, Progressives, to Evangelical Fundamentalists, so the doctrines it includes vary widely.

I worked for a Mormon who, together with his wife, joined the Mormon church when he was 40 & she 32. They were both severe alcoholics, but stopped drinking when they joined. There's a term used for those who stop drinking but don't seek therapy or 12 step programmes. It's dry-drunk. They continue to act as if they are in active alcoholism. It's disturbing. I regularly travelled with my boss to give presentations. I had put the finishing touches to some work in my hotel room one evening.. I went down to his to discuss it. He opened the door and I immediately smelled the whiskey he was drinking. Aaah, so thats why he insisted on accompanying me to all our out-of-town clients. I said nothing.

On reincarnation: Both Joseph Smith and Brother Brigham taught slightly different but related doctrines that basically amount to reincarnation with extra steps. So there is actually room for a form of belief in something like reincarnation.
On WoW: in its original form, it allowed wine and beer - it actually promoted beer. Only distilled drinks were forbidden. Heber C. Grant made all alcohol forbidden during the time of prohibition. He basically put the church in prohibition, where it remains to this day. He was also the one who gave us our current interpretation of hot drinks.
FLDS and Binkertonite LDS can drink coffee and tea. So can RLDS and their modern form, the CoC.

To: Lex @4:34 The question asked is: "Are Mormons Saved?" Lex, exactly what does saved mean? More precisely, saved from what? What is the person being saved from? That is what I've always asked myself. I've always felt that the statement of being saved was very misleading. But since the definition hasn't been clarified. It's been a gray area for me. Maybe you could clarify. Thanks for your great vids!

    MARK 7
18 “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you? 19 Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)
20 And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you.
21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

You’re wrong. Mormon’s Jesus is not the same biblical Jesus. Every Christian religion believes in the biblical Jesus. Mormons believe Jesus came to the Americas 😂. No other Christian denomination believes that. Also, there’s no such thing as lamenites and nephites. I mean i could go on on how Mormons are not Christian. Respectfully.

    COLOSSIANS 2
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.
19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
20 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?
22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.
23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

To help you understand - my mother sealed her mother to her first two husbands so that her mother would have the opportunity to choose which she would be with for eternity. However, because she didn't like her stepfather, her mother's third husband, she did not seal them. So much for choice, eh?!?!
