  • The oldest Northland treaty claim is being heard today, but the resilience of the people of Ngāti Hine to unearth decades of old claims has come at a cost; many of the original claimants have since passed away, their sovereignty has severely declined, so too have their land, sea and intellectual assets. They believe their authority is threatened by the rūnanga-led entity, Tūhoronuku.
