Cool pens. The ink goes completely transparent if taken above 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It returns to opaque at around 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Theoretically, you might even be able to use them on wood, and erase with a heat gun. Theoretically, you may also lose a whole notebook's notes if you leave said notebook in a car on a summer day.
One of the many things I love about your videos is the careful choice of words. It may seem trivial to some people but to emphasise phrases such as 'in my opinion' and to always acknowledge other methods, brands and personal choices is a class above the average 'off the shelf' tips and tricks video. Your channel is my go-to source and constant inspiration as I learn and improve. Thanks to all on the team!

That tape is awesome. I've been using it for a while and I really like it, and it works well too. And if it's really stuck on. Then you can just roll it up. Start anywhere and roll it up with a finger and it'll come right off.
I recently got some of that tape and it is amazingly better than any other double-sided tape I had used previously. I'm never going back to the old stuff if only for how easy it is to remove this tape and to peel the release paper off which is a pain with most DS tapes.
About those erasable pens, the ink is sensitive to temperature. The eraser works just by using friction to warm up the surface. Anything higher than about 60° C and the ink turns clear. You can use other sources of heat to erase, too. A heat gun works wonderfully. There's a caveat with those pens, though. If temperature drops below freezing (something like -10° C), the ink turns visible again. Secret message, anyone?
@@1ronman1 pretty much like any other roller-ball, gel-ink ballpoint pen does, which is to say ‘not brilliantly’ (mostly due to the wood grain, not the pen itself).
maybe you'll see this: I saw in another video recently after watching on and off for a while that you have Essential Tremors. I've struggled with ET, and especially internal tremors for about 5 years now, genetic of course. I'm no expert but as a consumer I am pleased and can't wait to use them with my lawn mower next summer! Multi purpose and I thing I want to listen to Edgar Winters - Frankenstein on them next. :D Thumbs up for safety.
Thanks James. The Duragrit products have really caught my eye in a couple of your videos. I’ve seen them but never in action. I could use a couple of their bits.
When we ran the CNC router lab in college, we always noticed it was easier to talk to each other over the spindle, compressor and dust collector when we had ear plugs in. We could chat at a normal volume and hear each other crystal clear. It was a strange phenomenon that we've never been able to explain, but it was definitely a welcome side effect!
I recently watched your video on sharpening chisels and plane blades....I'm curious to your thoughts on how to correct an angle that is no where near 30 degrees. Normally I would go to the bench grinder, but after learning a bit on it, I'm guessing the grinder gets it too hot...so I'm at a quandary.
Hi James. I really enjoy you channel. I have a question unrelated to cool tools. I recently acquired some heavily weathered red oak lumber. After plaining several pieces I discovered two things. The boards have beautiful gain, the prettiest gain I've ever seen in red oak but it also has a substantial substantial small cracks/crevices. What would you recommend filling the cracks with? Thanks for your time. Phil, Aberdeen, MD
Stumpy, as always, great stuff! I have a question for you. I'm a novice woodworker, made some large(r) and small items, sold quite a few basic projects and some more complicated but I'm ready to try more and wanted a few book recommendations from you regarding furniture as well as skills (power and hand tools) Thanks in advance!!
Wow I needed suggestions on all of these subjects. And I always never trusted that blue double sided tape. Especially with more holidays around the corner. I'm gonna need to use some stencils on my router and need to feel safe doing so. Plus the push block , head set. And literally searching for rotary bits. Out of the ball park for me on this one 👍
A mask that I like even more is the 3M 6500. It has a quick release that lets it hang down below your chin for when you don't need protection and only takes one hand to pull it back up to your face. It's really fast to go back and forth and I find myself using it way more because of that.
The 3M mask is significantly larger and heavier, especially with the cartridges. I use a 3M for solvents and like it. But it's not comfortable for long periods of dusty work, in my opinion. We compared the two in this tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/0RMJ4T5BDHY/v-deo.html
The erasable pen works through heat. The friction of the rubber tip heats the ink above a certain temperature (around 60C if I remember correctly), and it turns clear.
Yup, used to sell the Frixion pens a long time ago. Heat gun, hot coffee cup, even a light bulb will erase the ink. They have a highlighter in the series as well.
put blue tape on both pieces, ca glue on one piece of tape and activator on the other, then when you stick them together they pretty much instantly are stuck together... when done, separate the pieces and peel off the tape from which ever it stays on
@@StumpyNubs Thanks for clearing that up, you're a gentleman and a scholar. I missed the reference- but then I live under a log, so it's not surprising.
Orginaly it wasn't blue tape but the brownish painter tape and that should work for both routers and CNC. Crimson guitars use it all the time. Sesrch for "The masking tape trick".
I have a set of the Isotunes Aware hearing protectors and I have to say they don’t work well for me. They a big, solid and effective and the bluetooth part works well. The ‘Aware’ part of them works by picking up the ambient noise and relaying it to you which works well enough when quiet BUT when the system thinks the noise is too loud, they cut out with a loud ‘click’. So with intermittent noise or outdoors in wind, I hear a series of loud clicks and roaring. Generally, I just turn the ‘Aware’ volume down to minimum to stop the clicking which negates the point of them. If I bought again, I would buy the basic Isotunes bluetooth hearing protectors. Just my view, they may work for you.
If I'm understanding the Link Awares properly, I think it's a standard protection earmuff with a microphone on the outside casing, and when a sound level meter hits 85 dB, it kills the mic and stops letting in ambient noise. At least, that's how I'd do it.
Cheap yoga mats from Amazon are really great. I carry a small 2' by 3' piece 1/2" thick when I go backpacking and car camping. Sit on it, stand on it in your socks (to pee 'away' from your tent - well an extra two feet). I use is as a knee pad. The 1/4" pads have little cushioning, so if you need something firm. It'll still work as a knee pad. 1/2" has nice padding - this is the most useful. The 1" is very soft and cushy. I used to buy gel pads for my sea kayak seats - they sort of work. What's cheaper and far more versatile are the yoga pads. I'll roll some up for my back, put a layer of 1" on the seat. 1/4 on the footrests - for traction, a little padding and insulation. 1/4 or 1/2" on the hull to insulate the cockpit. Great stuff. I think the black backed pads you're recommending have more of the grip for your purpose.
Damn James, that was the BEST cool tools ever. The yoga mat snd Hippie Tape (hippies finally did something right) were genius snd I will go out and get them next week. Thanks!
I've been using Frixion pens and only them for something like 4 or 5 years. Also, there is a notebook (Everlast) and accompanying software that works with those pens. The system allows you to write normally in B&W or color in a plastic paged notebook, then use a phone app to save the pages digitally. The notebook is erasable, using a moistened rag, or the pen's eraser, for small mistakes. Things to know: Heat will erase the ink, so no dashboards in the summer. But, putting the notebook in the freezer will bring back most of the color. To truly erase, use a moistened towel. That reminds me, don't get the ink wet, it will erase. However, if ink gets on your clothes, normal clothes washing and drying will clean it up. Lot's of plusses and minuses.
Trend mask is fantastic! When oh when will you do a review of the Incra ts-ls you use in your second shop?!!?!? We saw it prominent with the hedgehog push block.

These work great for tuning out the puppy house breaking cries in the night and solidifying your resolve for having a good night sleep. I'm no expert but as a consumer I am pleased and can't wait to use them with my lawn mower next summer! Multi purpose and I thing I want to listen to Edgar Winters - Frankenstein on them next. :D Thumbs up for safety.
Too funny, I just got hippie tape yesterday for the first time.
thanks
the erasable ink is heat sensitive. it uses the friction to convert it into invisible ink which can be brought back at -10 c.
Now I want to buy all this stuff
Best cool tools video I've seen, thanks!
That's some very informational stuff, thanks for that! That erasable pen, does it work on wood, metal and leather too?
It works just like a normal ball point or gel pen, just eraseable
@@gabesmith6475 That's very cool. Thanks for the answer
@@MartinPaulsen87 your welcome
Depending on how large they are, you might try grain filler ua-cam.com/video/moPPnn1_w5o/v-deo.html
I love yoga pants when they're used properly :)
Thanks for sharing with us James lots of good stuff today. Fred.🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
Mr Nubs. Great show, this time as always. I adore Frixxon pens, but don't ever leave your notebook on a radiator. They're actually erasing by heat.
@Stumpy Nubs The erasable pen's eraser works through friction (It's clearly written on the pen in your footage).
Great cool tools...thank you!
Good Lord, the mental picture of making that first hand cutout, also with a flush trim bit
People that sew have been using the frixon pens for years. the heat of an iron will make the ink disappear also. Layout lines instantly gone!
The erasable pen works through heat. The friction of the rubber tip heats the ink above a certain temperature (around 60C if I remember correctly), and it turns clear.
We've been using these pens at work for over 2 years. They work incredibly well but they don't last, they get empty really quickly.
@@lucdesnoyers645 also, don't leave a brand new box of them in your car on a hot day. The heat erases all the ink. Don't ask me how I know...
They become somewhat visible under -10*c (edit: too late, it's said some comments down)
Scribble all over a blank page with them and put that page in the microwave for a nice science experiment!
Yup, used to sell the Frixion pens a long time ago. Heat gun, hot coffee cup, even a light bulb will erase the ink. They have a highlighter in the series as well.
Thanks James!
Ah, my friend just told me I needed a hole saw! Now I know what to get.
Whew. Hedgehog already sold out on Amazon. Guess that was a popular choice
Thanks James I gt the tape and the pens. Good stuff. Man I wish I could spend a few days in your shop bc I know i'd lern so much. Appreciate you!
What's the double sided blue tape trick that's going around?
Just curious.
put blue tape on both pieces, ca glue on one piece of tape and activator on the other, then when you stick them together they pretty much instantly are stuck together... when done, separate the pieces and peel off the tape from which ever it stays on
Supergluing two pieces of blue painter's tape together creates a low-adhesive double sided tape. Works for some things, but not a strong bond.
I also use Fricion pens and indeed, as soon as I light those papers on fire, the writing goes away.
The earmuffs are similar to what shooting sports have had for a while
Pen - Pop it in the freezer can make the writing to come back if it is the type the hard plastic rubber creates heat to remove the pen marks.
Fingers crossed. Going to take a bite of the Duragrit Mushroom (shaper) for coping. Thanks for the video.
Oh, Stump. You've got me spending money again!
We are always striving to improve our products so we thank you for your feedback!
I bought some electronic noise cancelling earmuffs for shooting, and they work great when doing woodworking, or using the chainsaw. :)
Great tools as always mate!
Love your videos keep it up stumpy!
Just want to say, there's nothing better than yoga pants (well...on the right person :p)
Does the erasable pen work on wood?
Damn James, that was the BEST cool tools ever. The yoga mat snd Hippie Tape (hippies finally did something right) were genius snd I will go out and get them next week. Thanks!
I am SO GLAD you recommended a double-sided tape! Yay! Do you possible recommend a "duct tape" too?
The ink in the pens is heat sensitive, if you write something with them don't leave it on the dashboard,or out in direct sunlight
The equation is simple. New Stumpy Nubs video = hit play + hit like * learn something new
Iirc the frixion pens use a heat sensitive ink that disappears when heated by the friction of the eraser
I like the respirator
I've been using Frixion pens and only them for something like 4 or 5 years. Also, there is a notebook (Everlast) and accompanying software that works with those pens. The system allows you to write normally in B&W or color in a plastic paged notebook, then use a phone app to save the pages digitally. The notebook is erasable, using a moistened rag, or the pen's eraser, for small mistakes.
Things to know:
Heat will erase the ink, so no dashboards in the summer. But, putting the notebook in the freezer will bring back most of the color. To truly erase, use a moistened towel. That reminds me, don't get the ink wet, it will erase. However, if ink gets on your clothes, normal clothes washing and drying will clean it up. Lot's of plusses and minuses.
Great stuff... Gotta go... Order a couple things... 🙂
Trend mask is fantastic! When oh when will you do a review of the Incra ts-ls you use in your second shop?!!?!? We saw it prominent with the hedgehog push block.
