I'm really happy you're noticing and appreciating how the underwater segments give certain creatures more depth and even show them in a different light, besides giving water a second chance in modern gen and seeing old underwater monsters come back, it would also open the door to create new menacing monsters in the water

The main reason why I want underwater combat to return is because it makes the world feel complete. Having monsters that fly in the sky, monsters that roam the lands and monsters that dwell in the depths is just so awesome ^^

the logical extention is aerial fights... but outside of jetpacks (unlikely), hanging off of Wingdrakes (they would hurl you off if you unsheathed your weapon) or an Airship (most likely option), that wouldn't really be possible

Fair warning: Egg Quests are not a single quest. They tended to be a series of quests that get harder and more ridiculous as you go. Be sure to keep at them each time you see a new one. ;)
I would highly recommend to take a look at item load-outs. Not only will it drop off anything in your inventory you don't want, you'll always know what you will have at the start of a quest. Just keep in mind it won't bother telling you if you DON'T have something in stock, so take a glance at your items after you use a load-out to see if you have to restock anything via the store or crafting.
Also, speaking of the crafting list, if you see white "????"s instead of grey, go ahead and craft it! Even if you decide you don't need what it made at that time, having your crafting list filled out is a good idea. You may also discover a few items you didn't know existed, or will come in handy when you leave for a long quest and run out of something.
At this point in the game, skills are kind of a distraction. This is a spot where World and Rise have done a much better job--you can make some okay builds in LR without having to either look for a few random parts with slots or focus on just one specific set that has a little of the bonuses you want. LR pre-World is more about just the defense, and maybe trying to pick up an Attack Up S or M. Unfortunately, this means there are only about three or four LR armor sets worth even pursuing.

Good, impose you dominance on chat you're a real hunter now.
I must say this is an absolute joy to see you going through 3U and just understand the dance of old world.
I feel like seeing myself back when I first started MH but better and more experienced obviously.
I join you on the Underwater combat returning in a smaller form. I absolutely love Lagiacrus in 3rd gen but hate it in Generations as they tried to mismatch its underwater and on land abilities, I don't think it was a success.
On the subject of Combo books, I would recommand to carry 2 so that you have 100% chance for Mega Potions.
Later for G rank I would recommand to carry 4 to make Ancient potions and all that jazz.

You enter their territory, and they are more mobile, powerful, and faster than you. You have to use planning and timing to you advantage, cause you are in their house and as every casino knows the house always wins.
Also Lagiacrus needs that underwater combat to be threatening, he is the king of the sea and without underwater combat, he is such a pushover. In mhgu they had to give him his subspecies moves just to be somewhat powerful. Sad :(

The way I personally manage healing inventory is to bring:
    -book of combo
    -book of combo 2
    -10 potions
    -10 mega potions
    -10 honey
Use mega potions to heal, then once you are low on megas, craft more megas with potion+honey (first 2 book of combos ensure 100% craft success). This ensures that each hunt you have a total of 20 mega potions.
later on in the game you'll have access to materials to bring 2 max potions so that if you cart, you can drink a max potion to maximise your health bar to 150, instead of the default 100 that carting resets it to.

Green sharpness is very important, in addition to the effects of sharpness you know, yellow sharpness always has a sour spot on every weapon that makes it do less damage than normal.
In addition to most frames doing less damage you also do less damage in general. Green is the base sharpness, 1.0x damage mod in the calculation, higher sharpness more damage, yellow has a damage multiplier of less than a flat one.
So yeah keep your weapon above green if you can.

My own personal issue about underwater combat is that,
the feels and flows of combat is totally different than regular combat, even if I'm using the same weapon
learning a weapon is twice as hard 'cause I need to learn both land and water mechanic
the devs probably also need to work twice as hard balancing them.

I kept dodging or attacking in the wrong direction. Big part of it is, like you say, depth perception. But also, I kept mistaking where the character is actually facing. The extra dimension threw me off a lot of times.
I guess in the end, it has a lot more to do with underwater movement rather than the weapons themselves. Perhaps, because I struggled in underwater movement, I ended up felt that the weapons didn't work like they usually should.

when it comes to items you want to bring, eventually you're gonna want whetstones, paintballs and mega potions, as well as honey and potions to craft more mega potions. it can be difficult to remember to restock that all, but potions and mega potions are always at the top of your item box so as long as you have those, you can always gather honey in the field if you really need to. this will become much easier once your farm gets upgraded and you start mining lava nuggets off a familiar monster's back

I probably the guy that recommended the book of combine. Great to see you still enjoy the games. I miss out again your life stream and I really want to contribute to ease your playthrough by giving some advise like last time. Regarding where to put your book of combo, the right answer would be in your pouch. You need to always have book 1 and 2 in your pouch because you certainly need to combine mega potion especially in harder monster, since you cannot restock your potion. So bellow are some of my advise that you may consider to check.
    1. Efficiency. I notice that you had a mindset that you don't want to use mega potion and just use potion because you think this isn't the right stage to use it. For me by utilising mega potion early in the games, you will avoid wasting resources since you heal a lot using mega potion and you spend less time on healing(flexing) by using stronger version of potion. Utilise the combine early in the games, gather and don't afraid to use high level stuff because it will made your hunt easier. Use all your resources that the games provide and don't afraid to experiment earlier in the games.
    2. Take advantage of segregated map. I notice that the chat do not want to tell you a big secret in old mh games that is you can go to different area during your fight to heal, sharpen, and gain stamina back safely without the monster chasing you. The marker will wear off so make sure that every 5 minute you use paintbomb to ensure you know the location of each monster.
    3. Weapon guide. I always treat monster hunter as a fighting games like SF or smash that every weapon are like a character. So it is sometime worth it to spend your time watching weapon guide by pro and to see how other play with the weapon. It is really mind blowing how by changing certain habit like knowing when to unsheath and so on will enhance your gameplay.
    4. Miscellaneous guide. I think it is worth it to spend some time to fully understood the following
    1. Cha cha system (how to use select skill, level up and use it properly)
    2. Canteen system (how to get more star item)
    3. Farm and community resources (fully upgrades and get trade item for cool stuff)
Check out and support other content creator that spend some time creating guide for this games
    5. Lastly is what armor set that you are useful at this stage which you can create early in the games.
    1. Gathering set - with the right gem, you can create a good gathering set earlier on that will maximise your gathering on each resources point
    2. Combine set - this set will help you create lot of cool stuff early on such as ancient potion or combine recipes that you need more low in success rate.

here's a tip for longsword: after the first and second hits of the spirit combo (also known as the swoosh swoosh), you can press X to do a regular attack. this won't end the combo, you can press R again and continue where you left off. it basically delays the rest of the combo for an attack.
this normal attack in the middle of the spirit combo takes no spirit meter, and hitting a monster with them increases your meter like normal. so, if you notice that you don't have enough meter to finish the rest of the combo, press X to gain a bit more meter, and then continue the combo.
it's also just a good way to deal more damage during that combo if you have a large opening.

I’ve always considered the Underwater mechanic to be the most, COMPLEX, playing style of the series. You really need to get the CONTROLS memorized to be efficient in it.
Also, decided to check my collection of 3DS games, and look and behold!! Found my copy of 4 ULTIMATE, and my save file is working!!

I don’t know if chat has told you you can “fish” out certain monsters to force them into land-combat, and I think it would be cool if future games gave us more options to lure monsters out of the water or control where we fight them

Jay, I just thought of something while reading comments on Ivory Lagi here. If you are going for a rare item in this game, and you can't seem to get it, try a different mission with that monster. The drop rates are different for each individual mission on the rares. For instance, to finish Ivory's armor you need a plate. If you fight him from Tanzia, you seem to never get that plate. But in Village you can get one like every other mission. They drop like candy in that mission. The rate is much higher. They have charts for it online.

Some charm tables have basically no good charms, but those are pretty unlikely to get. The charm table gets assigned depending on the time on the system clock. :P

Happy to hear you're somewhat enjoying the underwater parts. Obviously it's not perfect, but it's way better than the community makes it out to be.
Back when MHTri released no-one barely ever complained about the underwater, it was a fun addition for the hunts and exploration.
Only after like 4U released in the west people started to come up with this "oh underwater sucks" mentality without really knowing why it was removed in the first place.
If Capcom would remove things from the game just because the fans demand it the whole game would be way different.
No, Capcom removed underwater eventually due to how demanding it was for the devs to make that shit work even half as good as it did.
I remember hearing an interview just talking about the development of the underwater stuff and it pretty much was a miracle they made it work in the end.

    When it comes to Underwater Combat, I think one cool way to set a cool side-story up is the following;
imagine you get a quest to hunt a Low Rank Lagiacrus (Hub Quest) out on a remote island, you hunt it but out in the distance you see a fluke coming out of the water, which you report to the Guild, after your HR goes up a bit (i.e. not long after unlocking High Rank Hub Quests) you go to investigate this "new monster" but when you get there, you realise that it was actually an Elder Dragon; Ceadeus... and there are 4-5 of them and they're all infants... you inadvertently come across a pod of Ceadeus calves... they are not aggressive (even if you attack them) their horns have barely developed and they're each smaller than a Lagiacrus (tiny compared to their mother/s)
You decide to follow them, with your Handler noting how strange it is to see so many calves without their mother... as you continue tailing them, you find several "smaller" monsters attacking them (a few Gobul, and a Lagiacrus... say they have 50% less damage and only 33% of their normal health for this quest) these creatures need to repelled in the same manner as the Rampage monsters... after repelling a Lagiacrus... you start to notice a lack of other monsters in the area... then you hear a massive bellow from below and without warning; one of the calves is snatched by a giant blue tentacle and dragged down into the dark abyss below with crunching sounds being heard from the depths, the beast then swims up into the light... revealing that it is a Nakarkos; the Ceadeus' natural enemy and one of the most fearsome Elder Dragons ever documented, although this particular specimen hasn't covered itself in bones, likely to allow for easily mobility underwater
You recieve new directions from your Handler; defend the Ceadeus calves from Nakarkos (or more accurately repel Nakarkos) noting that letting the Ceadeus calves die would stall any further research into the life cycle of these majestic creatures, after trying to protect the calves from Nakarkos and mostly failing (due to how unprepared you are to face Nakarkos) you desperately try to defend the last remaining calf, the Nakarkos starts charging a beam of dragon element when suddenly; an adult Ceadeus descends from above and rams the Nakarkos; stunning the beast long enough for both you and it's calf to escape
When you return to the Hub, the researchers are delighted that one of the calves has survived (while obviously lamenting the fact that only one survived) and has assigned a team of hunters to monitor the calf at all times for it's safety... but they note that this chapter is not over yet, although they note that they got some amazing data from the surviving calf that could change the way we view the species as a whole, the Nakarkos is an ever present threat to the calves survival as the adult Ceadeus left the calf not long after the incident, with the researchers speculating that perhaps the Ceadeus does not actually take care of it's young... you are then tasked with slaying/repelling the Ceadeus, because despite it's peaceful nature, it is known cause large earthquakes and tsunamis in an effort to trim/file it's horns down (with them referencing Moga Village's own experience with Ceadeus) they say that they need to track the adult's location and when they find it, they'll report back
So after you reach the point in High Rank where you start getting to the tougher monsters (Rathalos, Diablos, Deviljho, etc) you get a quest to slay/repel Ceadeus and after doing that, you are informed that the Nakarkos that we encountered earlier has resurfaced and has been found in an underground lake covered in bones, having been scared away by Ceadeus, and all the area's surrounding the lake have been stripped clean of all animal life... you are then told to slay the beast, pointing out that they cannot let the beast continue wiping out the surrounding ecosystems
There will be two quests created after you finish this one, one is the "Hellfire Star" and the other is the "Deep Blue Abyss"... with the former being on land and the latter being underwater
Now that would be a cool concept for a Monster Hunter side story right?

I really enjoyed the non automatic item stuff in the older gens. I understand and also like how the current item box worked but in the older games there was this more being a Hunter feel, if you get what I’m saying. There was a pre-hunt and a post-hunt, you were making decisions (often the same which is why we now have item loadouts) and for some it was tedious but I enjoyed it. You felt like you were a seasoned hunter.

I think I am actually starting to get underwater fights. They are like fishing. With large fish it is an endurance game where you and the fish take turns fighting on the line, the fish take line from you and when its tired you taking it back and them some, eventually the line breaks or you pull it in. In this case underwater is you trying to endure and tire them out in their element until they move them to land and can take some line back. Now I'm getting the issue with the hip deep water in Rise where being in the water does not give the monsters any real advantage over land, so it feels pretty boring. World had an idea with limited speed in water without a skill but that just made people frustrated and not want to fight jyura or beo. Quite the conundrum I think.

Underwater combat is a weird mix of all your attacks operating exactly the same as on land but also feeling completely different. This is actually true of underwater monsters too! e.g. most of their underwater attacks are analogous to their on-land attacks.
Somewhat ironically there are only _two_ large maps with underwater zones (Deserted Island and Flooded Forest) and only _five_ families of large monsters actually fought underwater:
    - Royal Ludroth
    - Gobul
    - Lagiacrus
    - _(at least 2 spoilers)_
There is at least one monster fought EXCLUSIVELY underwater, never on land.
In MH3U I often use the "Store Items" command just to review what's actually in my Item Pouch, because it's just one click way from the "Take Items" command to restock things.
And yeah, early-game talismans do suck -- +2 or +3 points towards a skill barely makes a difference so you will want to periodically review them and sell off the weaker ones (use the "View talismans" option and you can sort your talisman list by skill, literally the only menu screen in the game with any decent sort options). As you reach high-rank and beyond you will start finding talismans with higher skill points and THOSE are definitely worth keeping around (especially any talisman with +10 points, aka. one free skill).
And "Speed Gather" is legitimately one of the game's best utility skills to have on your set if you can manage it. Especially for arena-style maps and even elder dragons.
Another thing you may find out is that, unlike World and Rise, if you sell off a piece of equipment (talisman or armor) used in one of your armor sets this actually removes the WHOLE loadout from your set list and you'll have to go registering it all over again. Not a fun bit of legwork to go through....

The main problem with tri/3U was the camera, no FOV, and a camera way to close to the character, just made the fights harder underwater where you need more perspective to see whats going on, the fact that in 3DS you basically HAD to buy the circle pad pro to move properly the camera because using the Dpad sucked.
The problem wasnt the movement, no, it was the damn camera, i've now gone back to 3U 3ds version, but i dumped my game from my 2DS to the PC and im playing using citra, and it's waaay better, being able to control the camera to see whats going on solves the main problem the game had for me, the "clunky" controls, specially underwater, that many people argue about, what where you expecting? you are fighting underwater with a 20~30kg armor maybe even more, where you expecting the agility of a dolphin or what? you are fighting with the disadvantge of a non favorable terrain, you are out of your natural habitat, and the monsters are fighting in their home, of course they are gonna have advantage, thats the whole point of Tri/3U, that you gotta play under their rules, not yours like in World or Rise where its just a DPS fest where you just spam attack and LS counters (because everything else sucks), and you gotta drown in the meta in order to win, there is no meta here, here you get your ass kicked, you analize, form and strategy, change your equipment accordingly, adapt to the situation that you are no longer the OP animu main character and you must use all you have to your advantage up to the last potion and sharpening stone, because that's what a hunter does, this is no longer a DPS spam fest, this is a hunting/survival game, and the more you go back in the franchise the more it is, and i frankly hurts me to see how bad World is and the direction the game has taken with the OP animu MC weeabo LS main direction, IF you come from MHGen or GenU, in world all weapons except for LS are a downgrade in terms of moveset.
3U is one of the best balanced games MH has (except for slime/blast weapons).
