Completely exemplifies the idea regarding result vs. process. Process amazing for those of us who like to use multiple sotfwares sometimes seeming unrelated or less familiar to some in certain mediums. Result amazing. In conclusion, use whatever tools you deem required to get to your intended result. Simple!!
love your vids. this piece reminds me a lot of Eytan Zana. too bad you're no longer making videos. life happens. otherwise it would be interesting to make a series that analyzes and mimics other famous concept artists or art styles in an exploratory fashion. Most artists hide their stumblings and their influences or their workflows, but I find it great to see you get there in unconventional ways.
Awesome video! Great song choice! Heard this song first on a lunar orbit video on UA-cam, and have used it many times as background music to draw, sculpt to. Very inspiring.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I didn't want the model to be the main point of the image. I'm sure any skilled ZBrush artist would find my base model quite laughable. I just find it a useful way to quickly layout an environment and play around with lighting, camera position etc. before I begin the digital painting
If I could find oil painterly brushes for photoshop that worked as well as these my life would be complete... then it's just a small case of building the skills to pull off this kind of wizardry XD.
great video dave, and the final image is super atmospheric. any chance you could do one where you do a voice over explaining the workflow and process you use with zbrush? looks super fun, cheers!
Hi. I'm sorry there's no voiceover at the moment, but I'm building up my confidence to do one. I might start doing some when I get a little extra time. Thanks for the comment!
Layer clipping, basically if you hold alt between two layers, a small arrow will appear, when it does, click and it will clip the top layer to the layer below, making anything on that top layer only affect the layer below.
Cheers man. Erm, a couple of hours I'm guessing. I wasn't really keeping track as I'm still relatively new to Brush myself, so it slowed me down a little
In Zbrush no time, but this is rendered in Keyshot. Still , pretty fast, you can set the timer as you wish and you can get images of different quality.
awesome piece! drawing over a 3d render is an interesting idea. my only criticism is the picture lacks a clear "subject". due to the mono chromatic color style of the picture there really isn't a definitive eye draw (which maybe was the intent which if so then ignore me lol), but that is my only thought is for how amazing the environment is it ends up feeling lacking because there s no where for your eye to be drawn too.

4 years later this video still inspires me , thanks for sharing this process! Hope to get to this level one day

This is so awesome! Thank you for sharing your process
wow, blown away, thank you for sharing your process, just took a look at your artstation port, amazing work man!
great video. always love seeing the full process like this. In the end though, you can hardly tell the 3d model was used at all.

Check out Terrain Tools - inexpensive plugin for that would likely interest you! Thanks for workflow

How did you use existing painting as a matte for the new paste in texture so quickly? 29:10 . I have my own way, but believe to be cumbersome.

how are you adding the cubes with entering draw mode or duplicating subtool ?
control dragging gizmo you can duplicate shapes onto the same subtool
Beautiful Paj. And that resolution is mental haha
Ha cheers Dave
beautiful
really good idea. How long did it take you the whole process?

how long does it typically take for zbrush to export a rendered image at full resolution?

I really need to learn Zbrush!
