What this video shows is how important emotion is in your choice. You have put up with your Pings for 4 years, great clubs but, they never excited you. I was so worried that you would make the same mistake and buy the PSis because they were available now when clearly, what put the sparkle in your eyes, was the PSi Tour clubs. All people seem to care about now is distance. What I care about is how excited I feel when i pull a club out of my bag. I absolutely love all my clubs and no amount of tech would persuade me to change them. Enjoy your new clubs love and I hope they do well by you ;-)
What I got from this is basically go to the pro shop pick an iron you like the look of and is suited to your playing ability hit it a few times on the range convince yourself that all the tech they say that has gone into it is what's making you hit it the extra 10 yards, and not the fact that it's 3 degrees stronger than your old irons across the board, then buy them standard off the shelf, and don't bother wasting your time with a custom fitting such a farce.
+Kristopher Bell how about lie angles and shaft lengths? Although I got my fitting for free I would have been miss-striking the ball consistently with a set of irons I'd spent £££ on. I can see your point though...
Yeah, to a point he's correct. I mean the lofts are getting stronger and there wasn't much fitting here other than changing shafts. He wouldn't have been able to know to get the loft lowered in the PSI. The real difference comes in when your outside the height of your standard golfer. I'm 6'5, if I tried to play with something off the shelf I would look pathetic. Thankfully I make my own clubs but I have to adjust length plus one inch over standard and lie adjustment 1 degree down. This is where club-fitting really shines. I would also say picking the right shafts for you can be very difficult as well, especially if your not as skilled as Pete. There's a lot more that goes into it than R/S/X/XX, weight being a major factor that a lot of golfers don't account for..
This was very cool to see/hear what a really good player goes through. I was just asked by a friend that is just really getting started whether a fitting is really good for him...I said yes, even if his strike is very inconsistent. The data doesn't lie.
Love your vids Pete. You strike me as a stand up guy but I'm really dismayed you didn't call BS on the data, even post fitting. If you want a different feel, I get that all day but those gains have nothing to do with the actual club save for loft and length. Crossfield would have at least challenged them on that fact for principles sake. Please don't treat your fan base like we are stupid. We deserve better than that.
@Peter Finch Golf Great experience in the magic workshop !!!! Golf iron distance look to the spin loft, so maybe look at AoA, dynamic loft to get better 'compression', strike location so ball speed?
No technology in the PSi's are accounting for those increases in BS, carry, and reduced spin. For reference: s56 7 iron: 34.25º, PSi 7 iron: 31.5º, RSi TP: 34. So the PSi 7 iron is effectively approaching a 6 iron. Therefore reduced loft, more BS, reduced spin, longer carry, plus you may have been pumped a bit to hit the TMs so SS was up a bit. Those factors are what accounts for the 7-8 yard carry increase. You'll also note that the RSi TPs are giving similar spin numbers to the S56, because they are both lofted at close to 34º. I'm happy that you're excited about the new irons and thanks for the video, I always enjoy them.
+Woden of the Angles Completely agree. SW can make a large difference in feel of the club head. Ping irons have traditionally been set to D2 on the PW and D1 for the rest.
Enjoy the new irons Pete. You'll love them. I have the RSi2s and although consistency isn't my strong suit (19 handicapper) and also playing once a week if I'm lucky, they are such an amazing iron. I know I'd be off a much higher handicap if I didn't have them. Like you with your new irons when you get them I know I'll have mine in my bag for a long time to come. Happy golfing Pete and I can't wait for the video when you get them
+Alan Brown mine are on their way with the Modus 130X and can't wait - coming from the RSi TP having bent 2 sets with C-Tapers in them. My builder has lent me a set of 745s to use until the new ones come in and they are awesome and look incredible and this is coming from a former TM fanboy.
Pete said there was something about the pings he didn't love ,and we all know how important that is!! Even if the new TM 's don't go any further, he will still happy and probably more confident with them. I have just bought new clubs, I know they they aren't totally suitable for me (yes I was fitted )but I got them because they looked great.....and I'm happy. Good luck with them Pete , enjoy .
+BuzzLightyear Hi Buzz, The fitting I got with my new clubs was as good as I could get with a club that isn't as forgiving as some and probably isn't suitable for my h/cap. I tried others and although the numbers were a little better ,I went with my heart and not my head ! This a was also against the fitters recommendation....... And the set I got were more expensive ....I'm just a sucker for pretty shiny things...what can I say?
+john uren haha I hear you brother!! I did a fitting (well sorta fitting with a pro and a trackman) for about 2 hours once and then just went with whatever was cheapest/best bargain in the shop!! Bet the fella thought I was a right knob!!
They do take a long while to be delivered! Also for the whiners about the loft: the loft on the PSI Tour are for some reason back to a more standard 34° for the 7 iron. I am very glad that you have kept a mixed bag and haven't fallen in love with one single brand. You are still doing a hell of a job and I have enjoyed your vids the last few months!
Appreciate these vids are free and apologies for the negative comments its just strange showing a professional fitting from a master fitter only to order something not fitted for. The RSi TP shown didn't go as far with the standard loft but there was talk of increasing the PSi forged to match the standard PSi; couldn’t you strengthen the RSi TP loft with the same result? I guess if the PSi forged are free the vid was worth doing for the views....$$
Great vid Mr Finch... Can't wait to see the retest when they arrive. I've played the Ping S57 irons since 2010, I love em, but the most used 9 and 7 are really wearing in the face. May have to look into a new set or replacement irons. I'm dying to try the Titleist AP2. Any way good luck with your new irons.
Great video Pete! that facility at wentworth is incredible and ive been fitted by Luke there and ive never played as good golf! its amazing how people think they know better through trolling. go and get fitted yourselves and see if you know more than the fitter! keep them coming pete!
It is refreshing to see that even a very good player, and a pro at that, can suffer from fitting anxiety like I do. In the two fitting session I had, the first five shots or so were complete rubbish. The old trusty X-100s are certainly good for your swing, but wouldn't you have liked to experiment with two or three other different shaft models as well, like the C-Taper or the Nippons many tour pros seem to be switching to atm?
I found this very interesting so thank you for sharing. I have a couple of questions 1) what would a fitting like that cost over and above the cost of the clubs? 2) does the fitting benefit an amateur who has a less consistent swing than yourself?
im about to go through this myself finally I'm 167cm talk with 830mm wrist to floor measurement and have been using a set of standard length and lie reg flex speedblades for the past 3 years and find myself standing too close and upright to get a decent strike but not having enough clearance between my arms and body to maintain balance
Very interesting video Pete. Like you say if you just consider the lofts of the clubs, and not the number on the bottom, what are you gaining from the change? You were after more feel, less spin, yardage and the X factor to fall in love with. Did you achieve any of these? I'm guessing that you're a lucky boy and TM arent charging you for the fitting or new irons but it would be interesting info to know prices, which is unarguably the biggest factor for Joe Public.
avg carry with ping 7 iron 160.8.. avg carry with the rsi tp which is very similar in loft 155.0.. a mishit no doubt bringing the avg down there but clearly this "tech" is not giving pete or anyone else extra distance.. ill leave what these slots do on mishits alone but if they were really that beneficial I would assume every club manufacturer would put them into their clubs
Pete said that his ping's were 4 years old. Typically, you get new irons every 5 years. I've got the psi tours and I can tell you they are amazing! The comments on this video just goes to show how many people bash Taylormade. I've had 2 sets of pings and the Taylormade psi tours beat them both hands down. Enjoy, Pete.
My advice guys for what it is worth when you go for a fitting. First of all before you go decide what you are looking to get out of your new clubs be it extra distance, better feel or tighter dispersion etc. Take your current 6 & 7 iron & know what the lofts of your current set are. Hit the irons that suit your eye first but match the loft against your own two irons to get the most comparable test possible. Let's be honest we would all flock to the mfr that would add 10 yards extra compared to your own set but only if the lofts & shaft lengths matched up.
Just watching this now , great vid, although unsurprisingly the comments section has a lot of engineers who seem to have more info than the guys at taylormade
If these felt a bit heavy why not try the pxi? It has a balance point closer to the grip and may be more comfortable for you. I use the project x (not pxi) in 6.5 and love them. I was in x100's for a while but feel, strike, and accuracy all seem better with the project x.
Ping 7 iron 34.25 degrees. TM PSi 7 iron 31.5 degrees. PSi almost 3 degrees stronger so ur right mate to go with loft rather than what number it says on the club the PSi 7 iron is closer to Ping 6 iron hence the yardage gain.
Hi Peter, what is your thoughts between thr psi and the srixon 745 clubs. I am looking at a new set of irons and my handy cap is 11 I have been watching both yourself and Rick and like the feedback on clubs you give. Thanks Dan
To keep the club more neutral through impact, ur gunna need to strengthen your grip to enable u to effectively "hold on" more through impact. Or just do what speith does....that seems to work well
Hi Peter, what is your thoughts between thr psi and the srixon 745 clubs. I am looking at a new set of irons and my handy cap is 11 I have been watching both yourself and Rick and like the hoest feedback on clubs you give. Thanks Dan
I've liked this, but.......for al the talk of trying lots of different clubs, you end up getting a set you haven't hit, but are similar to another. Not sure if it happened but a second fitting with the suggested set should have definitely happened!
Im watching this for the 3rd time now admitting I never paid full attention to the whole video the first 2 times around.. pete can u clarify the loft on that psi 7 iron is the same or atleast within reason of your ping 7 iron? I was under the impression the psi was much stronger in loft
As someone who had RSi irons I am not someone who gives a monkeys about loft and what number is on the bottom of the club, its just a number. One thing the PSi's has done for this fitting is to show an increased smash factor. Those that say the face slots do not work, they do, they definitely increase ball speed. It is not just about being an extra iron longer, its about having an extra iron in you bag so to speak. These irons will bridge gaps and potentially allow for you to discard say a 2 iron in your bag, so that allows other possibilities of an extra wedge etc. All in all, only Pete knows the full set and gapping in his bag, and by taking these irons know what other options this will give him. You have got to think of the bigger picture, where as we are all just commenting on stats from one iron in the bag, but that is all we can do.
+Combobulate Smash factor is obviously a ratio of ball speed to club head speed, which is generally affected by shaft length as a wider arc. It Pete's pings and the PSi were the same length and loft the PSi's would still be around 3-4 yards further in these averages example as the face slots do work and give better ball speed from their trampoline affect, thus a higher smash factor. If you took out Petes first shot with the PSi then at same loft and club length the increased smash factor could give him up to 5-7 yards more per club. You cant help but think that once Pete nails down the PSi then obviously he could really benefit on what he wanted (distance increase in irons), but Im just commenting on what he has actually hit in this demo, not what he could achieve. In this video the dispersion from back to front is too much, but only Pete knows how they felt and what his could achieve with them :) Looking at the video again I was probably too hasty in my initial comment, as if you take the first PSi shot out then the dispersion is probably no worse than the Ping. So based on what I have said above then it is worth the change. Apologies Pete.
No idea why people get so wound up about "cranked lofts" forget the number on the bottom of the club and look at the set as a whole. The dispersion might have suffered slightly but that's to be expected hitting new irons for the first time especially in a focused environment like a fitting where every single number is going to be scrutinised and don't forget the poor strikes with the Ping were actually removed. Pete I know you want to look down at a "better player" looking club but the reduced spin of the PSI is really what will make the difference for you isn't it?
The ball is spinning less because the lofts are lower. The reason he reaches the same height is because there is more weight in the back of the club. Moving weight to the back of the club has been done for years but lowering lofts hasn't. I think TM has actually done a good job with the face slots that's the real tech. His miss hits still managed to get out there.
Honestly...I've been indulging in Pete's , Rick's, and Mark's reviews for a good while now. Pete , this is good insight for a professional fitting, but I am getting the impression that yourself and Rick have sold out a bit on the TM side. Kind of a shame, as when you are looking for the juice on equipment, an un-bias opinion creates value in the review. A necessary mention of the loft game that the manufacturers are playing to make us all believe we are crackin it longer, this should not be ignored. I live in CT and have played "Lake of the Isles". Next time your in my area, there are a good amount of tracks you blokes would enjoy in Fairfield County, not to mention a quick jump into New York. Keep up the good work.....but please don't insult our intelligence in regard to brands and lofts...keep it Real !! P.S. Reviews for mid- handicappers help many...not just the scratch group.
Pete - need help please mate and ASAP. I currently have the Taylor Made MB’s but want to change it up for some more forgiveness. I play off 6 and am torn between the PSI and PSI Tour... what would you recommend? Thanks!
I dont think i would ever buy Taylor Made simply because by the time you have spent £700 on irons and got them home they have released a new model. Has happened so many times with Rsi etc that now i dont even look at them no matter how good they are
The thing that makes me laugh about the loft and number of an iron is people need to hit 'lower numbered clubs' as far as possible to make themselves feel better! Ignore the number on the bottom and imagine each club has a yardage stamped on it! If I'm playing against someone who hits an 8 iron into the green against my 6 iron and they both land in exactly the same spot surely I've hit a better shot as a longer iron is harder to it??? #LeaveTheEgoAtHome Great Vid Pete and very interested to see if the custom fit works for you
+Combobulate exactly! If I had the option of hitting a massive overswing 8 iron 150 yards but with 20 yards of dispersion or a smooth 7 iron with 10 yards dispersion it wouldn't be rocket science as to what I'd choose
Hm, I use Taylormade from driver to putter but I am not convinced by this fitting. You said it yourself, you need to love your clubs! Like Rick loves his Hogans. As long as google glass isnt a launch monitor so you can see the numbers of every shot, you will love look and feel of clubs. #golfromance
Surprised he got the loft of the psi 7i wrong! Also the 3i is 19 degrees ie more of a 2iron. Would be worried you strengthened the 4 as that's already pretty strong
Pete, with Nike, Mizuno, Titleist, Srixon etc bringing out their new range of iron sets over the last 12 months or so, why are you limiting yourself to just what TM have to offer? As you're after that WOW factor club along with other important factors from an iron surely you would be better off exploring your options. Especially with the likes of Titlesit CB's & Mizuno MP5's on the market.Given your swing capability, and based on the results of this fitting video, there has to be something that's going to benefit you more. Great video though with the insight to a proper custom fitting.
People piling hate on, let's remember he is a human being like us all and golf clubs cost money... If he supports TM, TM will support him in providing insights and videos like this for people to watch, if you don't like the fact that the videos are taylormade orientated, don't watch them? Pete is technically an Ashworth 'athelete', which as most of us know is part of TM, why don't you go give Justin Rose, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson hate for supporting TM?
It appears that you are trading accuracy for a few extra yards, your current clubs were much more accurate and the distance gain didn't seem worth the dispersion. Surely extra yardage may mean you ultimately have a shorter putt and may save the odd shot, whereas the increased dispersion will be the difference between avoiding bunkers etc which could cost you a few shots. Factor in the time you take adjusting to the new clubs (time away from consistent practice), surely in your quest for the Open, your better of sticking with your current clubs?
+Edward Thompson I think they should give me an extra club at least I hope and it's the same as any iron and I don't think I should see an increase in dispersion but we'll see
+Peter Hughes Oh no not that. I absolutely love my MP-H5 1 and 3 irons but I can only have one in the bag and no club is ever going to evict my lovely driving 1 iron, it has more or less replaced my 3 wood. Go on dump one of those TM things and keep the 1 iron #longirongroupie ;-)
+Killacamfoo O.G. Yeh this is the problem with having irons with stronger lofts it really messes with the very long and short clubs. They cant really have a 1 iron in that range because the 2 is essentially a 1 iron. Pretty stupid i always think, its not the range of irons that matter but the distance between them, use longer irons and you are just increasing the average length of your puts, no thanks. Clubs evolved to a certain sort over decades of tour use for good reason, now the weak minded are clambering for longer and the manufacturers are pandering to the new crock of gold, they are welcome to them ;-)
I went from a set of Taylormade CB 14 to the FlyZ + and Pro as a combo set custom fit by myself as I worked at a golf shop and was a certified fitter. Oddly enough, with the lofts being as much as 3 degrees weaker in my new set, my distances haven't changed much. Spin rates are better and I can actually hold a green with long irons. The CB 14s are pretty much the same as the PSi. I am surprised that the fitter here recommended subtracting loft from his PSi tour versions as that will decrease his launch angle, decrease spin, and make it harder to hold greens if he doesn't hit the ball higher. Perhaps that's why he recommended KBS tour as they are slightly higher flight. Either way, the PSi tour is a great club. I'm sure they will "feel" better than the S56.
I think I'd give Pete a mulligan on this one. First thing is that this was not a club review video so he was not there to question any distance claims. Also don't have a problem with him being fitted by TM as he is on a quest to play in the Open so why not use a big manufacturer if they offer. But like others I'm a little bit disappointed he didn't question how much influence the loft had on the 10 yard distance gains. As putting it down to 'tech' is a bit disingenuous. I have no doubt you would get some distance increase if lofts/shaft length were equal between the 4 year old Pings and the new TMs, but surely the loft is a much bigger factor. I agree that people should not get so worked up about the number of the club, but you can't use them to compare across brands/clubs if you are just looking at distance increases and using that as the justification to change. I do appreciate that looks/feel is also a big factor as well though.. Then again to be fair to Pete I expect he knew how much difference the lofts were making, and he was not going to call out TM in the video as they are being very generous to him (again he was not there to review the clubs, but get fitted for them) . It looked as if he was not having his best day when it comes to striking the ball so let's hope he uses them like it sounds he did in the US when they turn up. Also can't help thinking there would not be so much fuss if a guy from say Mizuno or Titliest had said the same thing as they all play the same marketing game to some extent. ;-)
Seems like you were fitted into the irons you came with. Irons are for accuracy. Accounting for lower lofts on the TM's and the loss of consistent strikes, no reason to change.
Damn Pete the hate is real...you put this nice video together with a club fitting guru and top notch tech and all people do is complain about taylormade's lofts...smh UA-cam just has a way of bringing out best golf experts that nobody's ever heard of to troll your page just to let you know that they seem to know more than you do and your wrong...great vid Pete do more
+jkee1718 Its not the lofts people are complaining about, my 7 iron is 31 degrees so i know all about strong lofted clubs.. The point is that this tm technician is saying the psi 7 iron is going 10 yards further than the ping because of the tech in the club & that's BS & a lot of people know it.. im sure the clubs are more than great just cut the BS
+jesse simpson jess you just said he's a Taylor made technician... so what else was he suppose to say if he fits people for taylormade equipment? if he said our clubs go further because we added length and crank the lofts he wouldn't be working for taylormade much longer
+jkee1718 woulda been hilarious if he had said that though! And lets face it, if TM had invited me to a free custom fitting with a free set of their newest irons....I'd have said whatever they wanted me to as well 😁
Thanks for the video - enjoyed it but felt that the fitter was just a salesman spinning a story and did not do himself or the taylormade fitting process any favours at all.... Why not just change the loft on your existing clubs to similar effect. Enjoy your videos and presentation style and content and wish you all the best. :-)
Peter, I truly like you and Rick's demeanor as compared to say Mark's. However, I do feel like both you and Rick's channel are heading in the wrong direction in regards to the brand bias that is going on here, where as I still trust Mark to keep everything very factual. As many others have mentioned you and the majority of your viewers know that there is some serious facts being ignored here in order to put the Taylormade's in the most glorious heavenly light possible. While I do not think it would have been correct or very mannerly to argue the points during the club fitting I do expect someone like you to include some sort of disclaimer afterwards in the video. I wish you all the best, but this appears to be the beginning of a slippery slope. Sincerely, Tony
+tonyh2k2 Part of the reason I unsubscribed (temporarily) from this channel. I came here originally because Pete delivered tons of good instructional videos. Now it seems most videos consist of weird vlogs with slow motion hits to music. And of course now they're drinking the TaylorMade Koolaid.
Enjoyed that will defiantly get fitted if I ever get the money together for new bats. Wow have you kicked someone's puppy, seem to be getting very negative comments on this one? I understand the lofts are stronger and people get very protective about that but surely from a mid handicappers point of view if the technology allows you to hit wedge through to 4 iron 10 yards longer then who cares. The problem would only come if you can no longer hit 4 and can only hit a 5. Then I would agree all that has happened is the clubs have moved along one. If you still can hit all the clubs but hit them further and straighter with the shorter ones stopping then who cares what the actual loft is. Come on guys where is the love? P.s. Hope you put the nice mans golf ball pyramid back together!
Pete I like your channel most of the time, but it is so pleasing to see when you put a bs video up like this that pretty much everyone is bringing you up on it. The thing that disappoints me is you are a pro and like so many have said all they did was decrease your loft but you didn't say anything just nodded and smiled so disappointed.
+TheDanbarian look fair play Taylormade are kitting you out and all but imo you have the potential to be big on UA-cam cause your vids are well edited, good music, good behind the scenes and you seem like a good coach from vids I have seen but putting vids up like this will hurt you cause people will not trust you. Just look at Crossfield he is super annoying and most people don't like him but I would trust him more than any other golf you tuber because he is honest and doesn't bs his viewers. Which is why he is getting so big. Just a thought fella that's all.
+Peter Finch Golf Dispersion front to back. If the PSi anything like RSi then are brilliant, but also slightly annoying sometimes front to back. Obviously, like you said, current clubs just dont wow you, but personally find newer pings better back to front than TM. Interesting to see how a Ping fitting would go. You pays your money, you takes your pick. Just personally nothing in the video stood out to me for a change, except distance, but couldn't you just krank the Pings?
+Shot Shy Sheriff Don't be disheartened by our comments though Pete. It is what you want and think that counts. You're the one hitting them after all ;)
If you want more distance crank the lofts according to TM that's their modern technology. Really, you have fallen for that trick. Faceslots speedslots its all smoke and mirrors. TM should run for government #fooled
People need to get off the loft number being different. With the technology put into place to improve launch and spin conditions, loft needs to be adjusted to optimize performance. If he were to crank his loft of his S56 7-iron to match the PSi 7-iron he would NOT get the same performance by any measure be it spin, launch, ball speed, or distance. Leave the physics to the experts and just enjoy the benefits of all their hard work and development!
Not convinced by that... haven't you just got a 6 iron with a 7 written on it and got worst dispersion? Couldn't you just paint a 7 on the bottom of your current 6 iron? I'm being facetious, but I don't understand how the new set is an improvement.
+Ian Atkinson I honestly wouldn't think of clubs by the number written on them anymore, better judging it by loft as all the manufacturers have different "standards" now
+Peter Finch Golf I'm no where near your standard of golf but I can twat an iron my clubs were second hand in the mid 90s and my 7 iron goes 130-140 yards max. The pitching wedge is a 90 yard club, I do the impression that the numbers on them are arbitrary now and that 7 irons can't be compared so when your on the tee of a par 3 and you are trying to hit the shortest club compared to your mate (and out alpha male him) becomes somewhat pointless...... (beats chest).. .
Hold on. So the difference in distance was ONLY because your swing speed went up by 3mph avg and the lofts are stronger!!! But you lost the direction. I'd say have your irons loft adjusted and you'll have the same result
Also I don't want my 3 iron to carry 225 and roll out 15 yards I want it to carry 225 and stop 226 so I can judge approaches a lot more accurately. Odd you are putting so much emphasise on distance. As you are well aware dispersion is so much more important.
PSI Tour is no different than the RSI Tour other than badging and a "P" in place of the "R". I doubt TaylorMade has made a huge advancement in iron technology since the RSI was launched 8 months ago. All that so called "Tech" in the regular PSI you were hitting is nothing more than cranked loft, compared to your Ping Irons. When you did hit the RSI Tour, which is a more comparable iron to your S55, you appeared to hit your Ping irons better. If that excites you then go for it. seems like you're drinking some TaylorMade Koolaid! And you basically got fit for an iron you never hit? No lie angle testing? This should be a video of what not to do when getting fit for irons. Love the TaylorMade guy selling you on the "Tech", LOL!
Who new getting fitted for some golf clubs could release so much anger? Pete can't wait for you to change your driver lol. Come on guys It's not all about the length of the shaft it's all about the feel and how you use it. ha ha
Off topic for this video but have you seen these? Just came across them there today. Simple but pretty useful for vlogging etc. twistedsifter.com/2015/11/polyhedron-stand-lets-you-put-gopro-into-20-different-positions/
Cranked lofts!!!!!! 7-iron Ping vs a PSI 6-iron with a number 7 stamped on it. It would have been a fairer test to have taken the numbers from your 6-iron and compare that to the PSI 7-iron, when really that's what the PSI is, a miss stamped 6-iron. Don't understand why companies are saying their products go further when really all they've done is change the loft from a 7 down to a 6, which obviously will spin less, have a lower launch and ultimately fly further....#nothing feels like a mizuno
pete, i'm also in the boat of liking yours and rick's beginnings but being a little disappointed in where your channel particularly is going. i'm not sure who the cheesy music-laden vlogs are for but i'm not sure many of us are digging them at all. feels a little like you're just showing off your swing at times. this video is very strange too. there are a lot of comments and i have to agree with most of them. i want to see a quality fitting where we see numbers genuinely improve not just because of cranked lofts and lengths. i come out the other end thinking that fittings are a waste of time. that can't be good. get the monday night golf show back. that was the one niche thing that you had to really showcase your and rick's strengths as a pair. good luck!
seriously you've got to rapped up on all the hype that golf manufacturers are trying to sell I hear ther bringing a club out next year that can hit a ball straight every time no matter how you strike it and go 300 yards with a lob wedge and putters that have laser sights on them making two putts a thing of the past,. will have to get me some of that lol
I was fitted for the psi's last week and I was carrying the 7 iron 179 yards :') such a good club
Enjoy your new clubs love and I hope they do well by you ;-)
I totally agree..... Emotion/feel is very important. But doesn't that make the roll of the fitting redundant?
What I got from this is basically go to the pro shop pick an iron you like the look of and is suited to your playing ability hit it a few times on the range convince yourself that all the tech they say that has gone into it is what's making you hit it the extra 10 yards, and not the fact that it's 3 degrees stronger than your old irons across the board, then buy them standard off the shelf, and don't bother wasting your time with a custom fitting such a farce.
Fantastic assessment!!!
Couldn't have said it better myself!
+Kristopher Bell So correct it is painful.
+Kristopher Bell My thoughts exactly.
Happy golfing Pete and I can't wait for the video when you get them
If you want to fall in love with a set of irons this and next year. Srixon Z745, Nippon Modus, ticks all the boxes.
+Alan Brown I really like the look of those, the Srixon irons full stop are really good
+Alan Brown i got them, never looked back! =)
I totally agree but doesn't that totally contradict the whole point of a fitting?
+BuzzLightyear Hi Buzz, The fitting I got with my new clubs was as good as I could get with a club that isn't as forgiving as some and probably isn't suitable for my h/cap. I tried others and although the numbers were a little better ,I went with my heart and not my head ! This a
was also against the fitters recommendation.......
Interesting video, Pete. Thanks for posting. Never had a fitting or seen what goes on behind the scenes. This is useful. Keep up the good work.
2) does the fitting benefit an amateur who has a less consistent swing than yourself?
im about to go through this myself finally I'm 167cm talk with 830mm wrist to floor measurement and have been using a set of standard length and lie reg flex speedblades for the past 3 years and find myself standing too close and upright to get a decent strike but not having enough clearance between my arms and body to maintain balance
watching this video now😂 getting some PSI forged this week doing a bit of research before my fitting😂
Quality video mr finch, when will you be doing a course vlog with the new irons in the bag???
Pete said that his ping's were 4 years old. Typically, you get new irons every 5 years. I've got the psi tours and I can tell you they are amazing! The comments on this video just goes to show how many people bash Taylormade. I've had 2 sets of pings and the Taylormade psi tours beat them both hands down. Enjoy, Pete.
Congrats, bud. Only thing that surprises me is they do the whole fitting with a 7-iron.
Very nice! I just got fitted for the Cobras newest ones! For Christmas!
+Liam O'Hara good man hope they go well for you
Liam O'Hara
Just telling you what you want to hear. Swing speed was up on the PSI's. I'm not convinced by custom fitting.
+Bruce Roberts please get custom fit and see for yourself it can be very rewarding
Id personally stick with the pings Pete. Great dispersion, mid flight and high spin seems like a better option than just distance.
Been waiting for this since the teaser
+Tyler Zellers tease over
Great video as always, Pete. You should do a giveaway for your s56s when you get the psi tours
I was in x100's for a while but feel, strike, and accuracy all seem better with the project x.
not sure what the lofts are on the ping set, but with the PSIs you're effectively hitting a 6 iron
+stu don't think of clubs (full set or irons) as a number 7,8,9 etc judge any club on lofts
+GREENO1509 do you know the psi for a 350 sl, I need to put some air in my rear tyre?
U not afford the 500? Anyway depending on brand, driving style and weather conditions I would recommend.....haha
+GREENO1509 I tried the sl 500 but when I had the fitting the guy recommended the the 350, something to do with the way I swing??
Had to laugh when he hit an iron similar to his own in loft, it didn't go as far as the pings hahaha
if you go stronger lofts you'll lessen the bounce, and it wont cut through the turf as well.
Impressive seeing the wear marks on the ping irons. So centred. Pro fitting looks awesome. Are you tied in to buying them and is it expensive?
Hi Peter, what is your thoughts between thr psi and the srixon 745 clubs.
I am looking at a new set of irons and my handy cap is 11
I have been watching both yourself and Rick and like the feedback on clubs you give.
Thanks
Dan
+Daniel Howley both are really good irons either will be good in the correct spec for you
Hi Pete, are you sure that the shaft were the same length ? I know that TM is doing longer shafts...
To keep the club more neutral through impact, ur gunna need to strengthen your grip to enable u to effectively "hold on" more through impact. Or just do what speith does....that seems to work well
+Jake Phelps it certainly does work for Jordan
Hi Peter, what is your thoughts between thr psi and the srixon 745 clubs.
I am looking at a new set of irons and my handy cap is 11
I have been watching both yourself and Rick and like the hoest feedback on clubs you give.
Thanks
Dan
I've liked this, but.......for al the talk of trying lots of different clubs, you end up getting a set you haven't hit, but are similar to another. Not sure if it happened but a second fitting with the suggested set should have definitely happened!
N'aww, Petey always has a smile on his face as he finishes his swing ;-)
I was loving it!!
I'm sure TM bought Adams for that face slot so must work to have been worth a few quid !
I think you're leaving a bit of carry distance on the table hitting 15 degrees of launch with a 7i.
Clubbed speed on PSI is 2 MPH more, combined with the stronger PSI lofts equates to the distance. Nothing to do with the tech at all...
The ball is spinning less because the lofts are lower. The reason he reaches the same height is because there is more weight in the back of the club. Moving weight to the back of the club has been done for years but lowering lofts hasn't. I think TM has actually done a good job with the face slots that's the real tech. His miss hits still managed to get out there.
the mis-hit disproves this...
The dispersion on your ping irons are better, you were throwing darts with the pings, I would choose accuracy over distance any day
What happen to the Matt fitting footage? been waiting to see that suite in action.
+Joe Rochester I'll be getting it together this week
Awesome, good to hear. Can't wait.
How are you gaming the new clubs?
Peter, watch Sam Goulden's video on covering the ball - that''ll show how to stop flipping your wrists :P
#LeaveTheEgoAtHome
Great Vid Pete and very interested to see if the custom fit works for you
Most male golfers are driven by their ego, that's why they don't get better!
+Combobulate exactly! If I had the option of hitting a massive overswing 8 iron 150 yards but with 20 yards of dispersion or a smooth 7 iron with 10 yards dispersion it wouldn't be rocket science as to what I'd choose
+Keith Jones A monster delofted 9 iron? LOL
+3rdgroove hahaha I'd have to thin the hell out of a 9 iron to send it 150 yards haha #GrassCutter #SallyGunnell
I'd much rather hit a 9 iron to 30 feet from 150, than hit a 7 iron to 10 feet
Wouldn't it have been better to wait for the PSI Tour irons to be actually available for the fitting?
+MissyLaMotte I'll be retesting once they arrive :)
+Peter Finch Golf Merry Christmas, Peter. Looking forward to seeing the test of your new clubs!
From what I've seen 19-20* is average for most 3 irons
Great Video!
So what kind of shaft did younger on the psi irons?
Pete, with Nike, Mizuno, Titleist, Srixon etc bringing out their new range of iron sets over the last 12 months or so, why are you limiting yourself to just what TM have to offer? As you're after that WOW factor club along with other important factors from an iron surely you would be better off exploring your options. Especially with the likes of Titlesit CB's & Mizuno MP5's on the market.Given your swing capability, and based on the results of this fitting video, there has to be something that's going to benefit you more. Great video though with the insight to a proper custom fitting.
Mmmm I wonder.......😁
+Edward Thompson I think they should give me an extra club at least I hope and it's the same as any iron and I don't think I should see an increase in dispersion but we'll see
What's the 3 iron replacing? Surely you can't throw the godsent 1 iron away. :)
+Peter Hughes It may be a possibility :/
+Peter Hughes Oh no not that. I absolutely love my MP-H5 1 and 3 irons but I can only have one in the bag and no club is ever going to evict my lovely driving 1 iron, it has more or less replaced my 3 wood. Go on dump one of those TM things and keep the 1 iron #longirongroupie ;-)
+Peter Hughes The loft on that 3 iron is only 2 degrees weaker than the 1 iron.
I'm sure they will "feel" better than the S56.
bought the PSI,s and have had to send them back due to the strip on the back coming off, not a happy chappie
+jkee1718 excellent point there.. this video just rubbed me & a few others the wrong way a little bit.. still enjoyed it tho!
+jkee1718 woulda been hilarious if he had said that though! And lets face it, if TM had invited me to a free custom fitting with a free set of their newest irons....I'd have said whatever they wanted me to as well 😁
BuzzLightyear lmao I feel ya bro...you give that type of treatment and I'll do a PSA on behalf of tm's tech lol
Forget these fancy irons, you could hit sticks of rhubarb and still beat these southern lavender boys. Good video.
What golf shoes is he wearing?
No new 1-iron?
How will you manage without?
:-)
Thanks for the video - enjoyed it but felt that the fitter was just a salesman spinning a story and did not do himself or the taylormade fitting process any favours at all.... Why not just change the loft on your existing clubs to similar effect. Enjoy your videos and presentation style and content and wish you all the best. :-)
fascinating
Sincerely,
Tony
+tonyh2k2 this is what I wanted to say but didn't quite know how to say it right lol
Why is it taking so long for you to get your PSI's Pete?
+Chris Wallace I'm not sure need to chase them up
great stuff Pete! you know its getting technical when you use sounds instead of words :-P #aaarrgghh
+Chris Longley haha indeed
The data you showed for your pings was different to the dispersion data for them up on the screen. Very confusing
What happen to these irons PETE ?
Pete I like your channel most of the time, but it is so pleasing to see when you put a bs video up like this that pretty much everyone is bringing you up on it. The thing that disappoints me is you are a pro and like so many have said all they did was decrease your loft but you didn't say anything just nodded and smiled so disappointed.
+TheDanbarian my apologies but I don't see it that way
+Peter Finch Golf dude c'mon
+TheDanbarian look fair play Taylormade are kitting you out and all but imo you have the potential to be big on UA-cam cause your vids are well edited, good music, good behind the scenes and you seem like a good coach from vids I have seen but putting vids up like this will hurt you cause people will not trust you. Just look at Crossfield he is super annoying and most people don't like him but I would trust him more than any other golf you tuber because he is honest and doesn't bs his viewers. Which is why he is getting so big. Just a thought fella that's all.
Surprised from those results that you'd move away from the pings.
+Shot Shy Sheriff why, would say that?
TM should run for government #fooled
lol, were you trying to introduce him like "The STIG" on Top Gear? lol
+ESikora12 give pete any iron in that 31.25 loft & it will carry 172ish
so you got 'fitted' into irons that you didnt actually hit? for a 7 yard gain and significantly worse dispersion?
(beats chest)..
.
watch out Rick
So you basically got fit for a club you never hit lol
+Mediocre Golfer I'll be retesting when they arrive but the Psi tour is a condensed Psi so I'm confident they'll be right, but we sill see :)
+Mediocre Golfer leave him alone..i've never seen the lad so exited about new clubs..it has been 4 years...haha..
Who new getting fitted for some golf clubs could release so much anger? Pete can't wait for you to change your driver lol. Come on guys It's not all about the length of the shaft it's all about the feel and how you use it. ha ha
+terry howard this certainly has release some vitriol
tried but it will not go through
Go Titleist Finchy :)
Off topic for this video but have you seen these? Just came across them there today. Simple but pretty useful for vlogging etc.

Launch angles completely different, of course spin rates are different, its all loft.
pete, i'm also in the boat of liking yours and rick's beginnings but being a little disappointed in where your channel particularly is going. i'm not sure who the cheesy music-laden vlogs are for but i'm not sure many of us are digging them at all. feels a little like you're just showing off your swing at times. this video is very strange too. there are a lot of comments and i have to agree with most of them. i want to see a quality fitting where we see numbers genuinely improve not just because of cranked lofts and lengths. i come out the other end thinking that fittings are a waste of time. that can't be good. get the monday night golf show back. that was the one niche thing that you had to really showcase your and rick's strengths as a pair. good luck!
+James Vargeson thanks
effectively.....
seriously you've got to rapped up on all the hype that golf manufacturers are trying to sell I hear ther bringing a club out next year that can hit a ball straight every time no matter how you strike it and go 300 yards with a lob wedge and putters that have laser sights on them making two putts a thing of the past,. will have to get me some of that lol
