How to Adjust Valves CORRECTLY on Chinese Pit Bike, Dirt Bike, or ATV (70cc to 170cc Engines)

- We explain how to adjust your valves on your chinese pit bike or dirt bike or atv. This works for 70cc up to 170cc bikes and many 4 stroke engines similar to these chinese ones. We set the clearances to 0.003" for the intake, but some may call for 0.004". Exhaust may also say 0.004". If these are stated on the bike or in the owner's manual, go ahead and use those specs. I use these specs for all my chinese bikes and have never had any problems. Hope this video is helpful!

I had a few people with questions on this topic so I made a video to hopefully help those of you who needed to see how it was done.
I think my pit bike has valve float. Will adjusting them fix that or do I need new valves and valance springs?
Mine won't go exactly on the line of t it goes a little before that and then the top dead center is that how it's supposed to go SSR 125
Thank you man I was getting so pissed I just rebuilt it and it still had no compression so I turned the intake abt out 2 mm and now it has enough compression for me to stand on it and it runs thank youuuuuu
Thanks I just did a 2015 ssr 72cc and was hesitant to do .005 on the bottom and .003 on the top. I've looked for the spec in the manual and online couldn't find anywhere. The engine case has no indicator to line up with the fly wheel either so the spark plug whole was the only way to find t.d.c. although the flywheel mark was close to top of the case i wanted to be precise so your method worked great and I was able to find t.d.c. and adjust the valves to this spec. The valves were tight and had no clearance although it would still run and not hesitate to start felt like it started better cold. I did a few valve clearance on xr/crf 50s and it's .002 for both in the manual I think this is for 70s to so I was hesitant to go with a bigger clearance. I guess bigger is better then no clearance at all. Any idea why honda 70 and ssr 70 are different specs just for peace of mind.
Not sure on that! Some pit bikes they say 4 thousandths on each valve
Good job both of you. Thank God for you both.
Nice job boys! Thanks for sharing 😎
I loosen my intake as it was backfiring. Is good now. Now it has a tiling noise. It runs perfect. But noise is concerning
Clearance is too much... Tighten up a bit
I have a 2019 ssr 170 that has very high compression and it kicks back once in a couple of kicks and it takes a good amount of time to start it up! and I opened the top end and it was super clean! do you have an idea of how I can fix it?
I had a 170 same thing super high compression. Make sure u get to tdc then kick it takes less kicks then. I sold mine about a year ago
@@bearkreekboys Did you guys use metric size 0.03 and 0.05 or was that inch? To adjust the valves?
.003" intake and .005" exhaust could run 4 on both too
Thanks for the vid. Everyone says the exhaust is the valve that gets tighter but my exhaust stays the same its the intake that keeps tightning like crazy is this normal?
Yup. Usually always the intake. Unsure if it's the valve seats that are weak or what.
Thanks for the video bros! So same Tdc for checking booth exhaust and intake valve?
Yes
O hell ya bro!!! Intake valve was so tight it wouldn’t move.got em adjusted and the bike fired up first kick!! Now just gotta figure out the insanely high idle
Thanks!!
My friend just got a 125cc and when in first gear it's screaming soon as he sets off ready for second gear literally basically setting off in second any idea
I'm having the same problem and can't figure shit out
Gearing. Mine came with a 12 tooth small gear from the engine, and when I upped that to a 15 tooth and changed out my chain I actually gained a first gear I could use for more then hill climbs.
So i dont need the valve tool.i can just do it by the spanner
I did that and the whole bolt came loose with the nut.
Hey man in 4th gear it feels like my bike is not giving all the power it is supposed to be giving, and when I first bought it I for sure know it lost some power? I need help asap
Any reason why that could be happening
Will I loosen the nut if I can turn the tappet?
i would yes.
I recently got a 110 and neither of the valves have the adjustment nut and it badly needs a valve adjustment. What size nut is on the valves
That is a good question I'm unsure of what thread size they r
Mine will not go on the line or the T it goes a little before that and then Maya stop the center and my valves are lined up on the line is that how it's supposed to go it's the same one you got
If it's a little past tdc that is okay to adjust valves there, they r closed on the "power stroke".
Do you do both adjustments based on the intake valve being fully closed or do you need to turn the engine over to set the exhaust valve to fully closed after setting intake?
At top dead center compression stroke both valves are closed so they would both need to have clearance so you set both valves at the same stroke
@@bearkreekboys cheers for clearing that up, I've set mine to the engines recommended clearance of 4 and 6 thou (0.10mm and 0.15mm) and seems quite loud ticking to me. I set them because I'm having alot of backfire lately and can I for the life of me get it to stop with mixture on the carb. Next thing to check is the jets I think🤔
@@michaelneville4393did you ever fix it? Have the same problem right now with my ssr125tr-bw
@@lilnofresh2875yea I upgraded to a nibbi carb and set valves to the recommended clearance and dialed the carb in slightly rich. Carb was a pain in the ass as with all nibbi carbs but once dialed in and jetted right they really are fantastic and the torque and throttle response seems alot better
Hey bro I d8d that and now I got a ticking noise... what do you think is up with that?
Did u set the clearance to the right spec? And not too loose? On the right stroke? Tdc compression.
My kick start was fine on my kayo k2. I tried to adjust valves and the kick starter is stuck
That's odd. What did u do for the valve adjustment??
@@bearkreekboys hey nvm i fixed it. The valve adjustment you need to turn the flywheel clockwise which is weird. I was doing counter clockwise. Way different than any other bike ive seen
Wait can I just bend the normal feeler gauge? I don’t wanna have to buy a special pre bent one. Btw I also have a ssr 140tr that needs a valve adjustment
I did! You should be okay. If u have an expensive set probably not the best idea. It worked on a bluepoint set of mine
@@bearkreekboys great! Thanks for the reply I’ll let you know how it goes :)
@@bearkreekboys alright so I adjusted them and my exhaust valve I didn’t tighten enough and it started ticking. I tightened it slightly more onto the feeler gauge and it started up great with really good compression. It ran for a bit. And then I go to start it again, and the compression drops like crazy. I’ll have to look into it here soon. And see if it backed up. But it seems that it looses quite a bit of compression after the valve clearance is too tight..
Could u please respond asap. Will a wrongly adjusted valve make a machine backfire
Possibly
It would hurt to check the timing of the cam and chain
will this work for a apollo z20
Yeap

Does the engine make a bit of ratlling noise after. I just adjusted the valve on mine .003 on the intake and 0.004 on the exhaust. And it still make a small rattling noise. Am i too loose again ?
Normal. Could also be timing chain slap.
Double check and make sure they are at 3 thou and 4 or 5 on exhaust. Mine was quite. Very little noise.
They actually are I checked like four time haha ;) . 0.003 intake and tight 0.004 echaustI have a video on my channel of it I will paste the link if you have Time go check it out.
ua-cam.com/video/3TkWljVCN5E/v-deo.html
Here is the video how the bike sound. I am at the track today and so fare no problem I guess the ticking is normal
I done the clearances .003 in and .004 ex and when i go to kick it over it gets stuck anyone have any idea what’s wrong
The timing is spot on
What bike?
@@bearkreekboys nvm the compression is just crazy on it once i done the valves think i might need to do .004 and .006 i got a yx160 stomp
