    Very helpful! thanks a ton! Everyone talks about lining up notches but that only works if the cam is installed correctly. This guy is correct in identifying the compression stroke using the tappets. On the yx 140 your sprocket can fit 180 degrees meaning the notch signalling TDC is on the other side and if you match it, you wont be on the compression stroke. If you set you valves while they are actuated, you'll have mad tapping sounds.

    Thanks for the help mine been off just enough so that i could pop start the bike down a good sized hill most of the time andnit ran fine but if i tried to use the kicker to start it it was impossible it felt like i was kicking against a locked up moter or almost like how hard it is to kick when your doing a comp check \ leakdown . it was bad i actually snapped. A kick starter in half trying to do it. But after the adjustment it was perfact. Im guessing there was too much slack in exhaust valve and it wasnt opening up fast enough makimg it hard to kick

    Good demonstration but, you can also open the Timing chain cover to verify TDC on the cam

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  4 роки тому +1

      Well technically I guess you could, but the timing marks won't be labeled for you like they are on the flywheel. Also this would assume that the cam is in proper time to the flywheel, so some verification of that would be needed. Good question/observation!

    I have a klx 140L. I'm new to all this.. the bike used to idle almost silently.. now I notice a top end chattery type of noise. It's not major. After getting a service manual I thought valves. I'm having a hard time knowing how much friction you should have on the feeler Guage. Everybody says a little drag. Is that so tight that the next biggest size won't fit? Or will the next biggest size be really hard to force? Well, I think I adjusted too far out. Now it was the same clatter noise but the engine is also running louder. Gonna re-do it today. It definitely needed it but am I dealing with another issue? It still runs good. I just want it to idle nice like it used to. Could it be my timing chain needs replacing? What else goes on these things? Compression is good. It's a 2008. I think I'm the first person to really ride this thing hard. This 12 year old bike was practically new when I got it. Any help would be appreciated. I want to stop this problem before it escalates.

    FYI American Honda use as a go no go technique to sit valves simply explained whatever feeler gauge you’re supposed to use to set your valves do you say that but then you take the next one up if it goes in then you didn’t get your valve adjusted right that’s the term go with the original feeler gauge and no go with the next one up that way your valve is absolutely adjusted perfectly there is no such thing as a Tate setting or a loose setting it either is or it isn’t

I fixed the cdi wire issue and took off the black and white to disable the security and finally got spark. I put the plug back in and tried to start it it tried to fire then backfired and I shut it off. Now when I try to crack it it’s slow like a dead battery, it was fine before it backfired. thejunkman it’s a new carb, starter, battery, and all electronics. It’s really struggling to turn over. It was fine before. I just didn’t have shark but it turned over fast. Then once I fixed the spark issue and tried to start it, it then backfired and I had already taken my finger off the starter. Then when I tried to start it again that’s when it became slow. Like something is stuck. If I take the plug out it is a bit faster but not like it was. And both starters and battery are fine. I’ve tried a jumpbox which makes it a little better but noting like it should be. Oh And the positive side gets hot fast. ?

    • @thejunkman

      It is an electrical issue if the post is getting hot. Sounds like there is a bad connection or too much resistance in the battery lead to the starter. The solenoid could be a culprit too. The back firing might have just been a coincidence and has nothing to do with this.

  • @xXCWALDROUPXx

    Ok quick question, my buddies Apollo 250 (Honda 230 clone) we just adjusted valves, set intake to .004 (very slight drag on .003 feeler gauge, don’t have a .004) and exhaust to .005 ish, when you pull the feeler out of the exhaust gauge and watch the valve and rocker arm it kind of “falls” back down, is this normal? We weren’t 100% sure that we were at TDC, there is an access hole to the flywheel but no mark anywhere on it, but we watched the valves and turned it over with no spark plug, intake valve opened, kick got harder to move, went slow and then right after the puff of air out of the spark plug hole do you stop? Or does it need that little 1/4-1/2 kick after that until it’s tough again? Thanks in advance

    • @xXCWALDROUPXx
      @xXCWALDROUPXx 3 роки тому

      Forgot to mention- seemed like it had much better compression while kicking, stock was .001 intake (yeah for real), after adjusting, it started first kick and idled, but pretty noisy (sounded like exhaust valve, I’m thinking just too loose or we’re dumb and weren’t at TDC)

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  3 роки тому

      The thing is different engines require different tolerances. The problem with the clone engines is manufacturing tolerances can vary and they are not well documented. However the fly wheel should have some sort of marking somewhere for TDC.

    • @xXCWALDROUPXx
      @xXCWALDROUPXx 3 роки тому

      @@thejunkman I believe I found what they are standard, intake has a 3 stamped into the valve cap and exhaust has a 6, online says around the same- if anything I’ll just tighten/loosen exhaust by a little until it’s only a little noisy, just needed to know if that was accurately TDC, and there may be a mark but we have to pull the whole electric starter off since they didn’t split the cover there, kinda a pain but might ditch it and the battery to save weight anyway

      Typically, yes. This can also be a sloppy cam chain, so make sure the tensioner is working. Most of these engines have a jamb bolt that you unscrew to let the spring apply the tension and then tighten it back up to secure it.

    Question: After you complete the adjustment on the top valve (compression stroke), do you need to rotate the piston in order to adjust the bottom valve (exhaust stroke)?

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  3 роки тому +2

      At true TDC both valves are closed, that is when you adjust both to their proper spec (found in the manual as every engine manufacturer is just a little bit different)

    I have few questions. I got a 110cc Tao engine on eBay for 220 bucks first thing I noticed getting I changed over and the packaging oil changed out, shifter and kick starter on wires hooked up. the engine won't turn unless the spark plug is taken out.. maybe the piston was put in backwards or something?.. there is just no clearance with the spark plug and piston.. could this be corrected? Would it also be a timing issue or what all I know and I'm using the spark plug it came with there is just no clearance. it is locked up when ever the spark plug is in. And this engine is brand new out of the box..

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  4 роки тому +1

      Sounds like an assembly problem. They must have installed the incorrect connecting rod as these engines have some interchangeable parts with different displacements. Essentially there are "long rod" and "short rod" engines depending on the applications. It is also possible they didn't install the cylinder base gasket or it is of the wrong thickness. Same with the head gasket.

    • @capchassuck
      @capchassuck 4 роки тому

      @@thejunkmanI told a buddy of mine from across the street the problem and he said either get a shorter spark plug or put a washer underneath the spark plug made of copper or brass so I took one from an old break line fitting made of copper and it kicked over. Gave the spark plug just enough room for the piston . really good factory compression not even broken in yet.

      The spec for the clearance is going to be different for each engine that has this type of adjuster design. That spec is in your service manual. This shows how to do it. Some are tighter and some are looser. So it would be irresponsible to list a spec and have it be wrong for another engine manufacturer. They aren't all going to be the same, but the procedure will be.
