You were absolutely right about the frustratingly complex firmware updating process. Even watching your video and following the instruction guide it was a challenge. I did the 12/20 updates on my new ftm300 the other day. Now there are 3 updates, MAIN v1.20, SUB v1.10, and DSP v7.11. This vid helped a lot. Well done.
Great video. Very helpful. I read the manuals before I found this video and they weren't bad, but your detailed explanation really helped illustrate the process. I have now successfully updated my radio this evening, and it still works afterwards. Yay!
Couldn't agree more, first time into ham radio and the computer skills needed is overwhelming. at this price point I cannot believe it is not more user friendly

Just completed doing the update. The Sub firmware update gave me problems. I downloaded the instructions and went step by step. The computer would not see the USB when I powered up. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I was so used to just plugging into the main body I kept overlooking the data cable has to be connected to the side of the display panel.
@gaz Could you do a vid about using SD card programming using ADMS-12 and also using the cable to program the radio?, would be appreciated.
Main update went fine, the sub update keeps saying "power is not turned on or cable is disconnected". Now i'm just stuck half-way updated....
Because they use two Renesus microcontrollers, one as the DSP, and the other for interface, and everything else. Renasus provide software to create installers, but Yaesu can’t program them directly.

I got a radio from a buddy who bought a just about brand new one from a Hamfest. I tried to program some channels into it. After a fight, I was able to get them in. Found out that it won't scan memory channels. So I checked the firmware it listed as main 1.0, sub 1.0 DSP as 0.00. This had me wondering. I tried a firmware update and the first 2 went in normally and show as updated. I tried the DSP and no communication with the computer. Tried loading the INF file, but that didn't help. Now I can't even program channels into it through the SD card, or the RT systems cord either. I think that the DSP part of the firmware is toast. Probably why they guy sold it. By the way, I went Mac back in 2018. This past Christmas I went back to Windows. Found the Mac frustrating and not the superior computer that it's cracked up to be.
What happens if you don't update it? This is one thing I don't miss about computers. I'm sure I'll figure it out. So would you recommend this as a first mobile base station?
Wonder if you can assist Gary I have updated both the MAIN and the SUB parts of the firmware but for the life of me I can’t get the 2nd driver to install on my windows 7 pc I right click the ftm300 com file with the gear cog on it hit install and a error come up saying imf file can’t be installed useing this method is there another way to install the file for updating the DSP part thanks

Just completed the update process tonight. It’s so easy an electronics engineer could do it. It only took me 2 hours to figure it all out. The dsp update was the worst. Had to manually update the drivers through device manager for that foray. In any case I noticed you mentioned in the comments somewhere that you’re expecting an 857 replacement. Any intel on that at the moment or are you just speculating? Thanks for the video. I wish I’d watched it BEFORE losing 2 hours of my time with the kids. By the time they come with another update I’ll have forgotten everything I just learned and be considering using a 20lbs sledge hammer to make myself feel better about the whole process....

The firmware on yaesu is soooooo sketchy! but the new ftdx10 is easier.. speculation on the ft857 as its a massive hole in their line up now.. Gaz
i am struggling with the dsp update the com file wont instal i right click it hit instal and a error appers imf file can not be instaled useing this method win 7 pc can you help ive completed the main and sub parts
Windows 7? It may not work with that.. you need to get on something current .. Gaz
I did all my updates on a Windows 7 platform. As far as the DSP: if I remember right that was the most challenging. Make sure all the steps are followed to the letter. Also I think I may have had to go into device manager and manually update the usb cables driver as windows would not do it automatically. Follow the sequence precisely, make sure all the dip switches are in proper position for the component you’re trying to update. If one step is missed, it will not work. Like I said it took 2 hours to figure everything out and successfully update everything.
As an aside I just updated my ic-7300 the other day and it took about 5 minutes.
Here’s to wishing Yaesu takes some notes from icom on how to implement easy updating processes!!!

Thank you for the Video exactly what I was looking for. Yaesu does need to rethink a few of its ways of doing things. I had to get a person with more tech experience to upgrade my radio since the information was not written for the layperson. I really liked the Screen with the Sheep on it , where did you find it? Thanks again.
WOW... I thought the FT-70D was bad enough... "take out battery, plug into power, switch on, remove power etc etc..." WTF Yaesu??

I got back into radio a couple of years ago bought new kit from MLS and the ftm300 to find the Bluetooth wouldn’t pair on it so I thought perhaps it needs updating to find Yaesu have gone back to the 1970s when it comes to updating it. Why it isn’t updatable like the FTDX101 I don’t know. It becomes more difficult to do this when you only have a Mac.
No doubt some people will think you're moaning for no real reason, but I'm with you all the way! All this long, drawn out nonsense is completely unnecessary and is a bit of a 'finger up' to all its customers. And made worse by the fact that this is their very latest radio! And made even WORSE STILL by the fact that Yaesu's competitors are spending a little more time at the development stage to help their customers have a better experience. I've given up on this for this evening, all the USB drivers installed and showing up in device manager, switch in program, powered applied, updater complains the radio is not connected to 12V, giving up before I get too mad, was hoping this would fix the radio not staying in narrow FM 😠
It’s a bloody pigs ear! I hate it.. I wish Yaesu would just use the sd card 😡.. I feel your pain!!
@@TheGazLab Got it working in the end, I thought the .NET runtime required was already on the PC, after installing it worked fine. The FM narrow always returning to wide was due to the RX mode being set to AUTO, once set to FM the setting stayed set on narrow.
any chance you could do video on programing this radio,i cant seem to transfer to the memory channels, created the list on the pc installed .......now have given up

WTF Yaesu? You have an SD card slot in the radio, use the damn thing. You seriously need to rethink all your menu processes. Icom is kicking your butt in this regard.
My problem is, that the ftm-300 updates DSP just fine from 1.10 to 1.11, but MAIN (now 1.1) and SUB (now 1.0) give me an update error.
Driver is installed and shows up as "Renesas USB Development Tools/Genereic Boot USB Direct" in the device manager. The little switch in the main body is turned to the right, the USB chime comes, when I plug the USB cable into the main body.
Same for SUB: Switch in the panel is turned to UPDATE, cable is inserted on the side of the panel, but same error.
I follow the manual, watched also your video, but every time I try both, I get the following error message: "Power is not turned on or cable is disconnected. Please check it. (H'00,H'A9)"
I agree this is not a great method of upgrading firmware .. make sure you are not using windows 11 Gaz

Yaesu’s software, it makes no difference for what purpose, has always been challenging to use. Not user friendly sure.

The firmware update process is BS…they must have some 70 year old engineers on staff that still write code like it’s 1991.
Yaesu staff support is laughable at best.

Why does everybody enthusiastically and mindlessly install firmware updates? I do NOT update firmware unless there is actually a good reason to do so.
