It's my understanding that the G5RV ladder line becomes part of the radiated element at different frequencies. So the vertical ladder line may have to have an exclusion zone around it.

Hi Gary, I live in a house with a garden 6m x 4m and have a 4BTV mounted 0.6m above the ground, Aircell 7 provides the feed at 30lm run. Running 100w from transmitter on 20m SSB suggests a minimum distance of 3.47 m.
Oddly, changing the wattage to anything other than 10 watts produces a distance of 3.14 at the lowest wattage (11 watts) but dropping by 1 watt produces a compliance.
Three local license holders on my estate have just sold up everything and given up the hobby due to non compliance and small gardens with a wish not to operate on 10watts. Basically none of us with small back gardens and close neighbours needed to bother with our Intermediate or Advanced exams. I too feel that I am being forced to give up the hobby as just wont be able to compete with the sun cycle and 10watts. Its a sad day for amateur radio.

Oh that’s not good news about your friends, I have a vertical like yourself in a 7x7 meter garden .. it’s fine, use the rsgb cal tool and remember if you are key down 3 in 6 minutes that’s 50% most of us are 1 in 6 aprox 20watts erp for the calc .. my advice is calculate it and forget about it.. it’s horse shit 😂 as I understand it’s 400-500 watts in france if someone could confirm that I’d be chuffed! Gaz

Thanks Gary, points well made. My only concern is the "centre of radiating element" statement. As I see it, a quarter-wave vertical radiates mostly at the feed point which may be only slightly above ground. This seems to be the mostly likely scenario for people inadvertently to get too close, particularly if, say, your vertical is only a metre or two away from a fence or boundary.

I should have added looking down from the top.. :-) I have lived and breathed this for 6 months, it’s all rather complicated under the hood.. I was feeling terrible that people would consider throwing in the towel yet they might already be compliant.. I’ll wait for the Feed back and perhaps budy up with someone to clarify any mistakes I made 😂 Gaz

I'm just going to add to my earlier comment, it was a bit flippant but with reason, my station like many others is compliant so I'm not that worried about the new regulations, I'm glad I don't work for ofcom they have probably had this landed on them with no extra funding and probably no extra staffing to carry out the extra work load.

Hi Gaz, you fired me interest... just used the RSGB xls spreadsheet and spent an afternoon modelling all my permutations... really easy as long as you have a spreadsheet program that will open the file.
I did do the Ciro Mag loop as well.. but with 200w going in it suggested it was lower then 10 watt EIRP...
I guess thats not the magnetic field... so not relevant.
All stored as both files and printout along with my licensing documentation. All very professional ☺️
Although I doubt if I will need to show it any time soon...
But a good exercise for responsible hams anyway😏

Thanks Gary - a sound approach. One question comes to mind particularly when it comes to vhf/uhf: say 25 watts to a colinear is going to radiate differently to the same power to a multi element yagi which concentrates the signal to squirt it at 90 degrees from the vertical and to my way of thinking will present less radiation where people might consider to be standing? Do the calculations take this into account?

Thank for the video Gary, but you never mentioned 2m FM which is the mode I use the most. In a semi detached row of houses or a terraced row most amateurs have their colinear on a pole off the back wall of the house.
At the height mine is I won't comply above 10W if the neighbour is in his bedroom. If I raise my antenna to comply the local council will request I remove it. If you believe any of this then it is in the interest of safety to get our antenna as high a practically possible, however the local planing will take the opposite view and say it is best to remove it for saftey.
From what I have read there is no proven link other than a small heating effect that non-ironizing radiation is harmful in any way. By introducing these regulations we have basic said there is a danger to the public. The public and the phone mast opposers will look at our hobby as dangerous, how long before amateurs get driven of the air by neighbours and councils.
Gary this not directed at you in any way keep up the good work.

Question. Long wire from gutter back of house running 10ft in air above my garden fence attached to tree at back of the garden. 50W SSB?

    • @TheGazLab
      @TheGazLab  3 роки тому +2

If you say ssb is 20% duty cycle that’s 10watts, if you TX for 3 minutes in 6 that’s 50% of your 10watts leaving 5watts now the fun part :-) 5x1.64 that’s 8.2watts EIRP 1.8 watts under the 10 watts EIRP limit given by ofcom. So record your calculations and happy days.. you can use the ofcom calc and print it if you like, or even the rsgb one as that works this all out for you.. Gaz
