- NOTE: The SMSGTE server is gone but there's a new server: Server name is SMS and you must opt in your phone number first at www.theconnectdesk.com/SMS for it to work.
FTM-400 works the same way except easier to type in messages.

LOL... actually the Kyocera DURA XV flip phone is one I just got about 2 yrs ago.. I usually just have an iphone for the past 14 yrs, but added this one as well for it's ruggedness, it's the one used by construction, security, outdoors enthusiasts... it has 4G, bluetooth, wifi, internet, email, etc, reviews showed it thrown off buildings, used as hockey puck, set on fire, is waterproof... pain to use though for txt etc, though, best as survivor phone.

I used this feature when I was broke down on a rural county road to send a message to another operator. Not enough cell service to call or text but somehow I was able to send it out through my 300. Now common sense tells you that you cant be driving and do this but its just a nice feature if you get in a pinch i guess to get a message out.

It’s a great radio, I use it everyday. Texting to cell phone with APRS will work on the FTM-100, 200, and 400 as well as the Yaesu FT3 and FT5, though HTs may not reach digipeaters with their low power. The Kenwood APRS radios work great too.

In terms of sending a msg via APRS, I see how you're doing this via the nob, and scrolling around to the right letter etc. Question, can you use the letters/numbers on the mic keypad, sorta old-school flip phone style, or is the nob on the radio the only way to enter text in APRS? Hi… yes only the knob, so it’s a little tedious to txt with it often.. I believe you can save often used messages to just pop into place when sending a message… I’ll have to try it out soon to confirm that.
That is so cool! Does this trick work with ANY APRS gateway or digipeater etc? Or is it only compatible with systems specifically setup that protocol? Great video!
Thank you.... Yes it works on any APRS system as long as SMSGTE is in the To: field it get to the APRS to SMS text gateway server. I've even used the International Space Station as it passes by to get on the APRS network so it goes through the ISS.. that's really neat. Unfortunately last year the FCC forced the shutdown of that server because of some regulation. I'm hoping some day they'll approve it since it's a great way to reach family or team members when a ham radio operator isn't in range of a cell tower.
Maybe a stupid question, but do you or the radio have to do anything to initiate the downlink of the reply? I replied to my own message, but I haven't seen the reply show up on my radio.
Hi, that’s a good question. No action necessary, the message will just be received by the radio and make a sound if the alert function is turned on for messages. Receipt of a message is not assured. A sms text message from cell phone to cell phone, is delivered whether or not the phone is off, or out of range of tower when the phone is within range etc.
APRS repeaters and digipeaters send the message and forward it throughout the network live the moment it’s sent only. Also if the message packets arrive at a digipeater or your radio same time as other packets, since there isn’t any coordination with all the transmitting going on in the network, the message will get walked on and you won’t receive it. There isn’t any resending. Messages do not always get there, especially in a city or other busy area. I live rural so I receive messages better than other areas. Also, perhaps going from the sms to aprs gateway adds more chances of lost packets.
I live in a fairly large city, and none of the nearby digipeaters will transmit messages back. One-way APRS gateways have become the norm. SMSGTE will be a one-way solution in most areas unless you set up your own gateway.

What about autopatches, what's different between this and autopatch? Or did cellular kill patches via the FCC too?
Does this work in the US only? Can it message International numbers throught the gateway?
It uses the SMS server just like texting on a phone, and phones usually incur a fee, I’d have to guess no. I’m not sure though.
Is the FTM 300DR not a touch screen? Could you just tap each letter rather then scrolling through the letters?
Unfortunately it’s not a touch screen, so the FTM-400 would be better if a person was going to use messaging to users on APRS on a regular basis. The FCC forced the shutdown of the APRS to SMS gateway so no more texting to cell phones.

Yes there is a way to send text to phone using email I believe. I can’t remember the procedure, but a google search should find it.
for a mobil radio this seems dangerous. is there a way to do this from the keypad?
You should never text and drive whether on phone or radio, and either screen with knobs or keypad.
Mobile radios should be put on scan or repeater you want to use so you are only touching microphone or volume knob etc… not necessary to look at radio much for safety.
As an aside , this is why I never put an HF radio on the vehicle, tho it’s fine when parked.
Plus a good percentage of mobile radios are used at home, so not an issue there, except ease of use.

Whats the difference between Yaesu FTM-300DR and the FTM-300 D
The FTM-300D is the standard radio designation, the DR is setup for North American frequencies, the DE is setup for Europe frequencies
@@hamradiocomms Thanks for your reply. I had asked same question on amazon and reply was no difference so II ordered FTM300D and had to cancel it. as it only goes up to 146 meters.

Is the SMS gate server down again?
Hi..: Unfortunately the last I heard the server was shut down by the FCC as not being legal on ham frequencies and is not coming back.
The video is good but this input method is so 1985.
It is tedious and I’d only use in emergencies… my home radio now is the FTM-400 which is much easier too text if necessary has a touch screen
@@hamradiocommsI have to say this input method has to be a total embarrassment to Yaesu. It's 2023, not 1985. Can't they come up with a Bluetooth connection to an app on a cellphone or at least a usb connection to a laptop?? Or a touch screen?
Never saw somebody doing so many inputs just for sending a text message.
Even my old Nokia was better.

I also have a iPhone … my flip phone is a military grade survival phone I use when backpacking and going in the woods … it has internet email Wi-Fi Bluetooth camera and video recording capabilities text all the same functionality of smart but very rugged.
My normal daily phone is an iPhone SE that I use most of the time. For location services while in the woods etc is my daily watch a Garmin with GPS.
