Beautiful song for Mary and Beth! Everything’s looking good! Edit: I live in Georgia and we have predominantly clay soil. I always mix in black cow manure and a little sand to help with drainage. The manure also helps nurture your plants. Your garden center will also tell you what amendments will help. You’re a happy gardener. Flick those beetles in a jar of soapy water. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you Jes, for taking us along with you as you planted your new plants from your Aunt Marybeth. I'm excited to see the Quince plant bloom. 🪴 I've never heard of that plant. So it will be interesting to see it grow and bloom. Your gully gardens look so lush and beautiful 😍 oh by the way when I seen your American flag hanging on your tree I had to get me one and do the same thing cause I loved yours so much. And I love to see the flag flying. It means so much to me. ❤ So thank you Jes for such inspiration not only in plants and flowers but also in our country ❤ 😊 love ya God's blessings to you, Nate, and sweet Max ❤️ 🐈🐈‍⬛

Awwww, Mary and Beth, how sweet is that 😊 Nice ending, love the walk around and song. Sounds like Aunt Mary's garden would make for a nice field trip. Gypsum helps break up clay, I've seen Monty Don of Gardeners World puts some grit in with the planting soil. I've never seen grit here in the states, but it reminds me of stones for a fish tank. Japanese beetles, I have 2 tons of them, bucket of soapy water goes with me on my 6am walk.

My grandmother had an old fashioned Quince in her front yard that was 8' by 5'. It was her pride and joy. It was covered with red/rose colored blooms in early spring through June/July. Yes, it had some gnarly thorns, she would wear long sleeves and heavy gloves when pruning.
Coincidentally, I have a grandson named Quincy! Need to add one of these to my garden!

I have all clay soil here in Georgia. Dig a hole twice the size you need. Mix some compost with the soil you removed. Put some of the mix in the bottom of the hole. Add your fertilizer. Plant the plant and fill in with remaining soil mixture. I have great success with this method. I generally use Espoma products like BioTone and Land and sea compost. 10:26 10:26

I can remember seeing what we always referred to as ‘flowering quince’, in my grandparent’s yard in Texas. It was one of the first flowering plants in the Spring and although it had substantial thorns, it was ALWAYS beautiful! Could turn into a hedge if let go. I absolutely LOVE your singing. Please continue to be you. You are a salve to the soul, a genuine gift from God for your sincerity and plucky spirit…and you are blessed to have ‘Big Nate’! He’s a keeper!

I live in PA 6b and have terrible clay soil. I use gypsum it’s suppose to break up the clay soil. I also amend the soil with Land and Sea compost (I love it), cow manure, mushroom soil. I am adding a new garden in my backyard later this summer and we will borrow a rototiller to prepare the soil. I also add Biotone when I plant flowers and shrubs. And then fertilize with proven winners or Plant or flower tone. Good luck! Love your videos!

Loved hearing your childhood memories with Aunt Mary. She helped you become a gardener!
My grandmother had HUGE old fashion quince shrub by her old garage. It was about 12 feet tall by 12 feet wide. She would prune that shrub when I went to visit her after I got out of school for the year. That thing had some wicked thorns about 2 inches long. It was a beast to clean up!
This year I am finding that a lot of the Proven Winner plants have no plant tag, just that sticker that you pointed out. I count on those plant tags.

  • @at1the1beginning

You're not wrong saying it looks like a rose because it's in the same family, Rosaceae.
In regards to bad draining soil: adding organic matter. If it's really bad, you might want to dig down deep to break up any hard layers that might be present. And while I don't recommend rotivating, somethimes the means justify the end.
Or plant things that really like the wet: Hosta, Astilbe, Rodgersia, Alnus, Caltha, skunk cabbage, Primula, Iris sibirica/ensata, Cephalanthus, Gunnera....
So in short, a sort of soil reboot:
    1) dig down deep (several feet if you must) with a spade or digger, breaking up layers and lumps and mixing different soil types to a more homogenous mixture
    2) level the area somewhat
    3) add an even layer of compost or manure on top
    4) rotivate to homogenous mixture again
    5) level it out to your liking (here you can decide whether or not to tamp it down somewhat, but don't use heavy machinery; your feet or a lawn roller are enough)
[ 6) mulch thickly, preferably with something woody. you may leave this step for later to watch the drainage during/after rain events]

I mix soil conditioner in with the native soil. It looks like a very fine pine bark mulch. Jim Putnam from Hort Tube recommends this. I'm in TN and have the very heavy yellow clay and if I didn't amend the soil, I couldn't grow anything. After coming from Illinois with the rich dirt for growing I had to relearn gardening. Thank you for all your videos I love them all and also watch your sister. My mom talked about quince, so I'll need to look into those.

I have clay soil in my garden. You need to plant things about an inch above the soil line. This reduces the amount of water around the crown of the plant. I also put a little garden soil in my holes that I buy at the garden center. I hope this is helpful.

I live on the coast of NC with very sandy soil. I watch Horttube with Jim Putnum allot. He is in the Piedmont of NC with Clay soil. He always says when planting in clay, to plant with about an inch of the root ball above the clay soil and then top with mulch. Be careful of trying to add sand as Jim and others say you will create a clay pot if you do. He uses compost, manure, and pine bark soil conditioner.

    • @JaneysGarden2023
      @JaneysGarden2023 Рік тому +1

What I normally do is add garden soil and try to mix it in with the clay surrounding soil as much as possible.
This year I planted a tuff stuff hydrangea (struggled in the first spot with too much sun bc leaves were getting crispy edges) I watered it so much that I was afraid I would rot the roots. I moved it to current location (total shade) amended the soil with mushroom compost thinking for sure that should make it well draining soil ? … (not so sure 😢) … every time I stick my finger into soil to check it comes out dirty with soil stuck to it, but not wet feeling if that makes sense. I feel like it may still need something else but not sure what 😂😬
The shrub however is pushing new growth (a lighter shade of green) and I do see I think it was three buds … will they open without any sun (not even filtered sun) we shall see 🤷‍♀️
Don’t really feel like moving it again just yet. Just hopefully it survives the winter and I can look at it again next spring ??
But, as far as amending Casey Lynn Lawrence (from Wisconsin) says a good way to do it is by adding GARDEN SOIL !! ….
Seen that after I amended with compost … guess I was doing it just fine to begin with 😬

@@JaneysGarden2023 it is confusing as there are so many various opinions. Since I am gardening in sand, I don't have firsthand experience. I can only point to what I have heard Jim Putnum, Tony Avert (Plants Delight / Juniper Level Botanical Gardens), and the folks at JC Raulston Arboretum teach. Ultimately, it comes down to picking what makes sense to you for your garden and trying it out.

Compost will help break up the clay. Each time you plant a new plant add in compost. Also adding mulch will help. Try tilling it in with compost in the spring then mulch again.

I garden in Michigan too and had to deal with a lot of clay when I first started. I would replace the soil I dug out with half top soil and half manure I bought at Meijer. I add a little Plant Tone or BioTone in the bottom of the hole. Fertilize the perennials in the early spring with more Plant Tone and mulch yearly. Sometimes I buy more manure and just put it around my plants before mulching. My soil has improved so much over the years. I think the more you dig in it, the better it gets.

I only have three hosta varieties. I can see that I need to expand particularly the blue flowered varieties such as mouse ears and wrinkle in time

He’s pull those plants up that are too wet and sit them on top of the ground. Then add your soil to these plants and mulch. This mounding up will do the trick. I’ve gardened this way for 40 years. Be sure to give them a 3ft diameter of soil all around the plant. Make sure soil comes up to the root ball top level.

Add compost to your clay soil. It amends the clay soil and makes it more workable as it breaks down. Total game changer. Your garden is gorgeous. How is that new plant from your brothers girlfriends aunt doing. Sorry I forget the name.
