  • The habit of Flowering Quince or Chaenomelesis is open and wide-spreading with an interlacing network of thorny stems.
The orangish red blooms appear in late winter on bare stems and may remain as the leaves appear. The blooms are complemented by creamy-white stamens.
For best flowering, grow flowering quince in full sun. Prune in the spring after flowering is complete, as blooming takes place on old wood. Pruning in the spring will also stimulate growth for more blooms the following year.
This plant spreads by suckers. Removing them will help control the spread and replanting them is one of the ways Chaenomelesis can be propagated.
The fruits are edible, with a bitter taste when eaten raw. They can be used in making jellies and other preserves.
Ongoing wet weather may cause fungal leaf spot, which can cause defoliation. New growth can be affected by aphids. Occasionally, scale and mites may be an issue.

    Does your hat mean something???
Does it have a hidden meaning?
I just would like to know before I share your videos with others?

Eric's hats are solely for the purpose of keeping his head warm, or shaded, and reinforcing his image as "that garden guy with the hats"! All of the hidden meanings in our videos are delivered through subliminal hand gestures! Just Kidding! Feel free to share our videos secure in the knowledge that the only agenda we have is that of sharing a love of garden plants!
