  • In this Video we present an overview of Australia's wild Cockatoos. The large Black cockies with Yellow, Red and White Tails then the White cockatoos with blue eye rings and yellow crests. My favourite is the Gang-gangwith the red fimbriated crest. The Cockatiel is absent but presented in a separate video

Thank you for the video, I love my Cockatoo's. My Dad hit a Sulphur Crested cockatoo with his car in 1968 when I was 6 years old, he died in 2019. After he got better from his broken wing he never left.
His wings were never clipped and he was good at flying and would spend all day in the gum tree in the back yard till it got dark and it was bed time. He was part of the local flock who would move in when no food was found in the wild, because I would feed them.
For 9 years he would not come home at night because he had a nesting box in the tree and a female friend. he has passed away, but 5 of his young have moved in.
A good cockatoo is never a pet, but is a family member and is full of love.

I was a bit confused at first as to who did the dying, in 2019, your dad or the bird. I assume the bird. My husband's family have a sulphur crested. He was gotten from the wild in the late sixties and is still alive. They live so long! Felix has a 'smoker's cough' he picked up from my FIL who's been dead since the 80s...forty years later the bird is still hacking away from time to time 😆 Good ol' Felix! He's particular about people too. He decides right away if he like your or not.

So grateful that you made and uploaded this video! I have had a love affair with birds since I was a teenager and met my first parrot - a Lilac Crowned Amazon. In 2005 I was in heaven visiting Australia. I watched a massice flock of sulfur crested cockatoos fly over a hill near Sydney and land en masse in my cousin's lemon tree. It was so awesome to see the tree seeming to explode into flowers. The noise was deafening though! While in Oz I fell in love with Gang Gang cockatoos and black palm cockatoos, but also with Kookaburras and Tawny Frogmouths. During a picnic lunch at Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park we were joined by no lress than NINE Kookaburras, including one juvenile who landed on the arm of my lawn chair and stayed for almost half an hour! I could happily live out my days in that country, surrounded by flocks of lorikeets and cockatoos - even fruit bats!

Where do you hale from? What are the birds like there? If you are ever in Singapore, go to the bird park, while birds in cages are sometimes a shame, they have a unique collection. While in WA some years ago, I took a little trip into the bush and saw a parrot not seen since 1956. I took a bunch of pics, showed them to my brother who is a bit of an expert, he showed them to some friends, it was agreed to tell no one because it may have resulted in unethical people disturbing them, they are already deemed extinct. We bought a large piece of land and have created a Trust, hopefully their habitat is secure.

Found one. They, like all the animals in captivity that are unhappy, are not unhappy because explicitly they are captive. It's because people take large birds like these and keep them in small canary cages their whole life where they hardly have room to move in their own filth with the wrong food and left alone. Yes same with other animals like cats & dogs that yes have been domesticated for thousands of years and don't really belong in nature they get abused and not properly taken care of that's not a captivity problem per-say; it's a human problem that everything we touch has to go to hell as we are a blight, a mistake, and against natural order. Well... Nature always wins; the most ironic part is "mother nature" will win by default as we've proven throughout our entire history we will be our own undoing.

Any Cockatoo that lives in the piliga must be Faf boy because if the Yowies get hold them it's Cocky for Brecky. Like a fast food for the big guys. TBH these birds are awesome. They are a very vital part of our outback farmers despise them due to crop damage these birds can wipe out a crop of many different types of seed grown plants. And they go to extremes to combat the problem. Let's hope that a reasonable plan can enable both bird and farmers get what they Want and need. Thank you for this insight into our rugged bush birds. That are very clever and can be extremely cunning. Cheers

I live in the South East of South Australia or now known as the Limestone Coast of South Australia and it is not uncommon to see mixed flocks of Galahs and Corellas or Short and Long Billed Corellas together.
At times when travelling over the border in Western Victoria I have seen mixed flocks of Corellas and Sulphur Crested Cockatoos.
In my travels within 100 km radius of Mt. Gambier I have seen the Gang Gang Cockatoo and the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo only in the Lower Glenelg National Park at Princess Margaret Rose Caves. Flocks of Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos occasionally fly over Mt.Gambier and Galahs and Corellas are sometimes seen eating the roots of grass on the city reserves and sports fields or roosting on power lines or tall trees. Sulphur Crested Cockatoos can be seen a bit further out from Mt. Gambier.
