nice thing about having the dump box on the truck, if bad weather is coming in, not only can u fill the 2 wagons, u could also fill the dump box and use it like a grain truck.
You should add a connector to the center of the frame. If it is gonna be pulling so hard. And get one of those air bag hitches that will lessen the shock load. The hitch on our 2 1/2 ton farm truck has an x brace from corner to corner.
This was actually quite helpful, I have a WW2 military truck with the same sort of chassis if not the same and I have been wanting a drop hitch for it for a while!
you two brothers work greally great together, grants enthusiasm about farming is super, we all hope that you both have a great life farming or what ever the future holds fore you
It looks like that hitch has failed due to fatigue right on the bottom plate edge that is strengthening the receiver. This is probably due to them welding that plate right up to the edge of the box section, causing a natural failure point. To avoid this type of failure most manufacturers avoid welding right up to edges, also shaping the plates so they spread out the stress more evenly rather than having a hard line. The only concern I would have with your design would be a fatigue crack starting on the main 5x5 box section where the receiver goes through it. This would be due the the main box trying to bend in half, right where the receiver is. However your box section is a lot thicker so you may not get this problem, maybe just check for cracks in this area at the end of the year. Keep up the good work!
I normally weld a piece of flat bar to the side plate that is snug up against the under side of the chassis then another piece that runs down to the cross member , takes some load of the bolts
You guys did a beautiful job on that hitch assembly and for your application I dont think there is any such thing as overkill! Very good truck although that little 250 is working pretty hard pulling that load on the road and I would guess stopping had better be well planned when loaded. You have a very good truck for your application not fast but its a good reliable easily repaired truck! Thanks for sharing the video it was interesting!
That was always my dads idea .. we had a deuce half back in the day … he wanted to haul corn in the dump bed and a 650 bushel wagon behind and net as many bushels as a semi
Great video! Glad to see you just keep at it, action after action!! Soaking in the information here...yields, moisture, time, distances, area measure, everything. Very appreciative of what you put into these, even when you just show us, and narrate only some of the time! We get it :) It's good! You produce good content Grant! Thank you!
Hey guys, just stumbled on your channel this evening. Thanks for taking the time to video, video, edit….edit….edit and finally upload/post your videos for the rest of us to enjoy. I noticed how difficult it is to communicate between the driver and passenger while operating the military truck. You can pickup an aviation intercom (used) off of eBay for around $120, you can also find used or new headsets for around $200 each on eBay and Amazon. It’s not cheap but if you want/need to improve communication in the cab, it’s an option. You would only need a 2 person intercom (they make 2 & 4 person models) and you don’t need to buy the super expensive (high end) headsets for what you need so it’s doable. Just a suggestion in case you need the ability to talk without yelling back and forth. Good luck with your farm and stay safe.
What are your neighbors going to think when they see Spencer's military truck driving down the road with a gravity wagon of corn. Could possibly fill the dump bed too with corn
We run a 1991 m932a1. Pulls the hay trailer, the water trailer, the grain trailer, has a wet kit and we put a blade on the front. It is by far the best most useful truck I've ever had.
Hitch is a great idea, I would make it even better and get those bolt holes all drilled out to 3/4". It looks like the suspension comes into play, but it would be even better if you could put some kind of truss or brace at the top to eliminate any swing force.
M817, Cummins NHC250 (855 cubic inches of awesome!). Did a bunch of gravel runs in same truck….air over hydraulic brakes only “scary” aspect with a full load on the road. Did you guys switch out to Dot 5? A visible header tank for the brake system can give some peace of mind (just next to driver seat above dump handle)….a quick mod worth doing (the brake reservoir has an npt plug in the cap to run a line to the header tank). Great post!
Not 100% for sure on the breaking situation. Have research a bit on it and understand that a complete failure of brakes can happen with the original system. A good amount of work was done to the truck by previous owners and the last owner was unsure if the brake situation was changed. That’s something I need to look into more. I rely on the brakes a little as possible now and try and always down shift to slow down. For rest of year we will be using it as an off road truck for the most part. Thanks for the comment!
For better traction and a better peace of mind. Try filling the bed of that truck up with dirt or some kind of weights to help it get better traction while hauling those trailers up and downhill the hills at the farm!
Yeah we lowered the psi in tires and with the 6x6 kicks in it pulls up hills without slip. It weighs just the same as tractor. The worry is to much weight and stopping could be a problem.
Get yourself a California duster for those windows and you won't spray them again to clean them. Best thing ever for dusty windows like a combine and farm tractors.
I think having a few hundred bu in truck bed. You have none of your load weight on the truck. If conditions a bit slick. It could skid the truck. The newer elevators I dump at have one long pit. (For both semi traps) I would think you could dump gravity box, and truck in same pit without moving. So a smaller gravity box, using truck might be a better combo? I really think buying, putting up a @5000 bu dryer bin will make you some money. I see them go at auction cheap. They are easy to move (leave roof, top two rings intact) You no longer are slave to elevator hours. Plus you can sell some of your corn dry. A 5000 bu bin drying would slow your harvest alone. But a batch/continuous flow requires much more investment. That 5000 bu bin could become wet bin, or just extra storage
You could throw 100 to 200 bushels in the dump bed of the military truck, you'll be able to get more bushels to the elevator but also it will help with traction in the field
Think you may need to reweld with 6018's then cover with 7018's the weld looks stacked not enough penetration, .5 material you can go pretty hot..it looks awesome great job
I cranked the machine to max amps and my chart on manual shows I could weld 3/8 with my setup on one pass. I did root passes then ground down then came in with 3 lines after on side and middle to fill. Thanks for the comment! The stick welder looked like it wasn’t penetrating like the Flux. I had a decent amount of undercut with the flux.
Did you bevel for when you welded. 1/2 inch is pretty thick to weld into without a good bevel to it for the root pass. I see a lot of weld material bubbled up on the on top seems like you weren't tieing into the side plates of your fill passes. Looks like the puddle wasn't hot enough when it was feeding in wire. I would of stick welded material that thick. Good luck to you guys hope it works well for you. I know you just started out so hey only way to get better is more time under the hood
Do y’all plan on getting a grain truck when y’all expand your operation more in the future. If y’all do expand do y’all plan on going big header wise and getting more tractors and equipment around the farm?
In the future for welding. Always push the weld away vs pulling it. It will penetrate better and be a lot stronger weld. Otherwise it turned out very nice.
Hey grant I dont know if you know but you can auto adjust that yield monitor on your iPad so it doesn’t show all red, you can change those number so red is 100 and green is 300 and you can have as many numbers in between if wanted
Just some questions from a guy who have little to no experience farming. I know that you mentioned vertical tilling in the fall so if you were to do that, come spring what would you do to set the seedbed? Also when would you be cultivating versus VT?
In my video I show how I supported the receiver. Wish it stuck out a bit more in back to work with. Thanks for the comment. ua-cam.com/video/s_BVre6sI-Y/v-deo.html
It's hard to get heavy steel to hold with a wire welder. Fab work like this is very hard on your body over time. And drilling holes are not bad if you don't have to use a hand drill. But some times you have too. Drill slow and use wd40 every little bit and should go good. You did good job! It will last till it don't. How I look at it.
It'll work but just make sure if you have a chance to add any extra side mirrors to cover your blind spot as well cuz when you turning with the trailer you're going to have a blind spot because your blind spot is going to be not on the back of the trailer but in the middle of the war of the truck is that's going to be your blind spot
are you welding with flux cord or gas cause if your doing it with flux it isn't gonna be as strong as gas. gas sheilds the arc so it gives more penetration which means more strength . if you do start welding with gas i recomend 75 carbon and 25 argon. holds the heat better
I would also recommend getting a gas welder. By the sound of your arc it sounds like you have a gasless one. Gas welders will be able to get hotter, penetrate better, make a stronger weld and a better looking weld all together.
If you guys put corn in the truck to not only can you haul more in one go but you can also get more weight on the drive axles on the truck to help the truck move through the field with the wagon a little easier cause it has mor traction
Lookin good Grant and Spencer can’t wait till you get your first semi
They might not need a semi with that tank on the farm 😂😂
Maybe but it’d come in handy hauling the excavator around
Hey Grant do you plan on getting a bigger corn header for the combine
Maybe a cabover
@@chase5896 that would be awesome
nice thing about having the dump box on the truck, if bad weather is coming in, not only can u fill the 2 wagons, u could also fill the dump box and use it like a grain truck.
Grant, Spencer is your secret weapon, your ace in the hole. His value continues to increase every season.
You mean like ruining a truck by putting air release tires on a truck designed for duals? Military Museum my ass!
watching these along side of playing Farm sim, is massively growing my urge to save up and start a farm myself
Nice truck Spence made a good purchase
You should haul grain in the back of the truck aswell
Spencer you learn new things every day welding is a good thing to learn it will help get you places in the future
You may want to use grade 8 bolts on the hitch if you haven't already
you two brothers work greally great together, grants enthusiasm about farming is super, we all hope that you both have a great life farming or what ever the future holds fore you
Really happy for you guys. So great it's a family working together. Stay safe out there.

Never thought I would see my two favorite Iowa farming youtubers do a video together. Fun fact I like about 10 minutes away from Rons farm.
You guys should look into getting a single silo with dryer capabilities so you can store a little and not 100% rely on co-op even if the bin is used
I normally weld a piece of flat bar to the side plate that is snug up against the under side of the chassis then another piece that runs down to the cross member , takes some load of the bolts
you should tie in the hitch straight forward towards the differential and frame in line with the forces
DAMMM SPENCER!! THAT HITCH LOOKS HELL BENT FOR STOUT NICE JOB!!
You guys did a beautiful job on that hitch assembly and for your application I dont think there is any such thing as overkill! I’ve just got to say i love that truck. It looks amazing
That was always my dads idea .. we had a deuce half back in the day … he wanted to haul corn in the dump bed and a 650 bushel wagon behind and net as many bushels as a semi

What are your neighbors going to think when they see Spencer's military truck driving down the road with a gravity wagon of corn. Could possibly fill the dump bed too with corn
project for next season, weld a back onto the dump bed with a grain door!
We run a 1991 m932a1. Pulls the hay trailer, the water trailer, the grain trailer, has a wet kit and we put a blade on the front. It is by far the best most useful truck I've ever had.
You could extend that frame 6' or 8' and build a grainbox for it
As first time farmers, you both are killing it!!!! Keep it up.🚜🌽🌽

Can't wait to see what's next!!
Keep Smilin!!!!
Sickest grain train on the tube, keep up!
That's pretty sick. You now what could haul more grain is making a door for the dump bed and hauling grain 2 wagons and the truck
Spence, nice fab job on the hitch...looks tough as hell!
For better traction and a better peace of mind. Try filling the bed of that truck up with dirt or some kind of weights to help it get better traction while hauling those trailers up and downhill the hills at the farm!
Or corn
yep, with some weight on the truck you would be able to pull 2 wagons fully loaded no problem.
Yeah we lowered the psi in tires and with the 6x6 kicks in it pulls up hills without slip. It weighs just the same as tractor. The worry is to much weight and stopping could be a problem.
You guys are awesome, Love your channel. Job well done on the fabricating the hitch
Definitely looks good keep up the good work. Why not build up the sides on the truck and haul grain with that to.
Yo grant and Spencer watching you since day 1 keep it up
What’s coming? A cheap grain cart? A tractor? Maybe a sprayer? Love the videos
Looking good boys… 2 more identical wagons would be a perfect setup
Hello from Saskatchewan, Canada great videos thanks for sharing
Get yourself a California duster for those windows and you won't spray them again to clean them. Best thing ever for dusty windows like a combine and farm tractors.
Army is a good place for Spencer, he can play with all sort of big trucks. 🤔😆

You could throw 100 to 200 bushels in the dump bed of the military truck, you'll be able to get more bushels to the elevator but also it will help with traction in the field

The stick welder looked like it wasn’t penetrating like the Flux. I had a decent amount of undercut with the flux.
How big do you want to eventually expand your farm?
Definately in need of your own bin site. Even a 10000bu bin just to handle the short term storage for corn so you can run late.
Spencer is a great fabricator. It is a gòod harvest
That military truck is awesome
They truck is pretty cool Spencer.
Grant, I'd get some devastators on that corn head like CornStar Cole...it really chops the residue up.
I really like the use your getting out f the military truck already.
Can you bring a piece from where the pintle was on original cross member down to the hitch maybe help strengthen it a bit more?
Do y’all plan on getting a grain truck when y’all expand your operation more in the future. If y’all do expand do y’all plan on going big header wise and getting more tractors and equipment around the farm?
Spencer At 6:58 i see you didn’t weld around the end of the plate. That’s pretty important… to stop it from cracking!
In the future for welding. Always push the weld away vs pulling it. It will penetrate better and be a lot stronger weld. Otherwise it turned out very nice.
the only thing is in some of the shots the welds look cold. I would maybe grind some out and make some hotter passes
I was waiting to see who else was a metal head and was going to say something
I’m a welder and was wondering if anyone else noticed
Hey grant I dont know if you know but you can auto adjust that yield monitor on your iPad so it doesn’t show all red, you can change those number so red is 100 and green is 300 and you can have as many numbers in between if wanted
Loving the engineer jokes
I love it. Now you've just got to paint the truck deer green lol. Great stuff thanks for sharing.
Just some questions from a guy who have little to no experience farming. I know that you mentioned vertical tilling in the fall so if you were to do that, come spring what would you do to set the seedbed? Also when would you be cultivating versus VT?
I would put a support in the center over the reviver to the crossmember of the truck
In my video I show how I supported the receiver. Wish it stuck out a bit more in back to work with. Thanks for the comment.
ua-cam.com/video/s_BVre6sI-Y/v-deo.html
That is a cool truck and trailer combo. You probably have done that in Farm Sim at some point. Lol
My uncle has about 200 acers here in South Carolina we farm can't wait to start back
It's hard to get heavy steel to hold with a wire welder. Fab work like this is very hard on your body over time. And drilling holes are not bad if you don't have to use a hand drill. But some times you have too. Drill slow and use wd40 every little bit and should go good. You did good job! It will last till it don't. How I look at it.
Spencer Sure like getting his hands dirty and getting work done
Love you guys
Nice job on the hitch
Great video Grant from Bryer Floyd
Grant are you going to use the back of the mitary truck to heal grain as well?
Great video
What you doing for brakes between truck and wagons?
I think your 6x6 would cool in a woodland camouflage paint job
It'll work but just make sure if you have a chance to add any extra side mirrors to cover your blind spot as well cuz when you turning with the trailer you're going to have a blind spot because your blind spot is going to be not on the back of the trailer but in the middle of the war of the truck is that's going to be your blind spot
You guys should get a old tractor or truck to restore over the winter so that you can keep the content rolling
are you welding with flux cord or gas cause if your doing it with flux it isn't gonna be as strong as gas. gas sheilds the arc so it gives more penetration which means more strength . if you do start welding with gas i recomend 75 carbon and 25 argon. holds the heat better
it is also a cleaner weld
In the bed of the truck you could probably try and get it line-exd to prevent rust
Great video!!!
Quick tip, when you plasma cut, cut the farthest edge away and cut towards yourself, you won't be jumping around as much and your cut will be cleaner
Hey grant, any plans for a grain bin or anything soon
What system do you use on your ipad for yeild and moisture monitoring
That truck with those trailers is likely a picture in every coop workers phone
LOL
That's a cool setup
Awesome build. Keep up the good work.
That’s a nice setup
Next year need to build a tail gate for it with a grain door but the tail gate can be ramovable
Grant will u guys make a bigger end gate for the military Tru so you can have a grain truck?
Just quick question why do yall have a haligan bar 😂
Grant what's with all the cracks in your new concrete?
Мужик, сделай ему задний борт под установку шнека для заправки сеялок и кузов под размер бункера джона красиво нарости имба аппарат получится. Потом просто в кузов семян навалишь и будешь быстро заправлять сеялки через гидравлический шнек. Is this going to be the Grant Hilbert semi truck or do you plan on getting one of those in the future
what drone did you guys use for that shot???
You should try hauling grain in the bed of the 5 ton!!!
I have a question why don’t you use the bed of the military truck with the gravity wagons
because it is old and bumpy and they don't what to use loose the corn. or the bolts or pins that lock in the bed could be broken too.
Love this video keep up the awesome work 👏 👍
I like your videos
