I work on ships and changing the name like that won't work (or at least has very slim chances of working). The name of a ship can be found EVERYWHERE. 95% of all documents inside a ship has it's name on it. All that agent needed to do was go inside the mess hall to find a crew list plastered on the wall or demand documents from the captain.
It's enough to maybe deter a boarding (not in this case) - but yeah, how the fuck they got away with that is mad shit, and that was just the 90's. Now everything even more digitial, be pretty fucking hard to pull this off now.

It's not legitimate business, but it generally is easier to wash your hands clean of it compared to drug dealing.
