NOTES ON THIS EPISODE: - I just realized that Liches have two different portraits as well. The current one is called *BTNLichVersion2.blp.* You can see the old one by replacing it with simply *BTNHeroLich.blp.*
Ablehawk! I'm not sure you made a video on this already, but Night Elf Archers have a secret ability called Elune's Grace, which increases their resistance to piercing and magic Strangely enough, you can only see this effect in map editor, but not ingame, if you try to copy this and put this on another character, it'll show up with a Night Sky and a Moon icon, but it wont ahow up for Archers
Your voice is not boring man, i think it actually fits very well with this style of videos. Also I love your sense of humor, it's what gets me to rewatch older easter egg videos. Thanks you for making these, can't wait for reforged to come out and see where you take your videos with it. Cheers and have a pleasant day.
And the necromancer might be the voice line of the undead announcer? Or it could be acolyte or those two units have the same actor. That explains why they sound similar
Many years ago I played a very early patch of Reign of Chaos and there were some things different. In the previous video you mentioned the different priest icon and I wrote a comment there about the different model of the cannon tower. I also remember that ziggurats/spirit towers used to have a different portrait model, the Frost Armor spell could be cast only manually and the Divine Shield could be turned off.
Thanks to people on HiveWorkshop, we've discovered _even more_ unused sound effects from the beta. Among them is the Undead announcer saying _"Infidels have breached our defenses!"_ instead of _"Our town is under siege."_ In a similar case to Arthas's "I'm so tired", this must've been a last-minute change, as some (if not all) localisations still use the old voice line. Paladin also used to have a line about "infidels." I guess they didn't think that term fit Warcraft?
Now it makes sense that the Night Elf announcer says “Treant may not lay here” when you wanted to reroot an Ancient Protector after going mobile in an invalid spot. “Treant” is what they actually used to be called
Still interesting to see that many of the icons in WoW originated in WC3. I've seen all of them in WoW at some point. When you create macros you basically have an icon database just inside WoW. That's so cool, there are thousands of them!
The book icons: I remember using them in 1.0 Reign Of Chaos. I was sooo pissed when I had to drop 1 item from my full inventary to use that book and pick the dropped item up again. Luckily, the instant books showed up.
Also, there was a bug called Tome bug. In the beta version you could click on a tome in the inventory hundreds of times and then it would increase your Her's stats. So you could have a 1,000 strenght Hero. XD
2:15 that's basically Mal'Ganis ultimate from HotS I wonder if Blizzard did that with other abilities in HotS. I mean they can just take some unused spells from WC 3 and put them in HotS
Oh man, the secret spell intermission got me, well done! Your videos are absolutely the best. I'm hoping against hope that the reforged team puts some easter eggs in. Doesn't seem to be a common feature of modern games to nearly the extent it was in the early 2000s, but the classic team seems to really understand what made the originals great, so here's hoping.
So I guess it's not accidental when I got hardcore Princess Mononoke vibes when I first encountered Cenarius and the Night Elves in the game. This is your best video yet btw, amazing way of showcasing.
The part about the mana stones and recruiting heroes must go back to the time when Warcraft 3 was still set out to be an RPG where you controlled heroes instead of base building and army managing.
Ziggurat icon is related to Nerubian hidden doodad of Ziggurat, which looks like on the icon. It's much more decorated and nice looking than final small nerubian ziggurat
You beat me to it! You can restore the gem above the Ancient Ziggurat, also, by using the UV coordinate data encoded in the released Spirit Tower model combined with the texture file from the Ancient Ziggurat.
Yeah, how did he not know that the icon was later used for moonkin form? As for the icon later used for mark of the wild, he said "probably the original icon for rejuvenation". He's not talking about what it was later used for, he's just guessing that its original purpose was for the druid of the claw spell "rejuvenation". I'm guessing that assumption is based off of its file name.
@@vaellir6329 No, that's not the point. He said "wow druid players will recognize this icon" referring to the icon later used for mark of the wild in wow, but made no mention of the future use of the moonkin form icon. His speculation for its uses somewhat implies that he knew it would later be used for moonkin form, but he didn't mention it at all.
Someone might have mentioned already, but the necromancer line is used in game. "Our bretheren's town is under attack." This is why there is a jarring audio cut after the word "bretheren," as well as the word "is" afterward.
Abelhawk that’s right! Thanks for these videos; I’ve loved them for years now. Here’s hoping we find out what’s going on with the dwarven King in the cut scenes for the campaign one day.
I noticed how you still use that "ReplaceableTextures\CommandButtons\" line in the video even for passive ability, while you should use "PassiveButtons" instead of "CommandButtons" for these. I speak it there for people who might wonder why they can't find them. Great video as always, by the way !
I know this is an older video and someone probably brought this up already, but in regards to the Obsidian Destroyers, they seemed to have another incarnation besides the Black Sphinx (or Obsidian Avenger) - in the game files you can find an unused texture for them that has a greenish skull-face and some kind of spiked helmet. It mooostly fits over the current model, aside from the helmet part, which seems to have been meant for a slight alteration.
I never knew those icons existed iam currently doing a melee map and half of these icons that blizz decided to hide were NECESSARY for my futur devolpment. I abondend my map as hive didnt offer all the icons and modells i need. I still lack modells but finally i can rest assured on the icon part. Thank you abelhawk u not only revieved my interesst for Wc3 but also for the futur of my Melee maps. Thank you.
Warcraft beta tech tree was once very similar to Starcraft. Like the gargoyle building is to enable the production of gargoyle in crypt and it also allows you to research for the stone form upgrade in that gargoyle building. Btw stone form used to take mana, by saying that gargoyle used to have mana bar which is just weird..
16:42 Funny thing that giant floating shrine thing in concept art was named as shrine of chaos, and in the early versions of the game it was used to sacriface untis for exp.
Hybernation was the original healing spell for druids of claw. Your theory about it being sleep+heal-over-time is right, through I don't think a unit could use it on itself.
Hi, about the "everything i touch dies or comes back to life" is actually a reference to japanese spirits of forest, death and life which kinda even looked similar to cenarius. Their main purpose was taking life and giving him back as there was a need to maintain balance between it
Late to the party here, but it may even extend to 'Spirit of the forest' from Princess Mononoke that looks very similar to Keeper of the Grove. It is able to touch a being, either killing it or bringing it back to life.
14:53 When you look at the 'Life Drain' and 'Siphon Mana' abilities in the editor, they use the same back-end stuff to function. So making a spell that does both is really easy. There are however also whole bunch of fields that have no function (that seems to be a feature of a lot of spells). 2:55 If you give a unit 2 spells based on the 'Raise Dead' spell (eg summoning different units), the game glitches and always uses the 'first' spell. In the editor you can work around this with spell-books, but I'd image that this is a bug that the design team did not have the opportunity to fix. It seems likely that their fix for 'Raise Dead' v2 was to summon a skeleton and a skeletal archer, and this was later changes to just 2 skeleton (with the necromancer providing the range-support).
0:43 Yes, they were among the first heroes added to undead in the alpha, then they became an ordinary units same with crusader(which became knights, because knight had a different wc2 like model), and between a hero stage and current stage they must be merged from three ghouls.
Great video man. You really stepped up your game. Editing is top notch and the look of the borders you made is sweet and super functional. Keep up the amazing work man
I know it's been a long time since you uploaded campaign easter eggs, but one thing you (i think) missed is how 1st mission of TFT undead campaign, the one where you prevent humans from running away to mountains, is as far as i know the only one that gives you cinematics upon being defeated
Spy and the town watch upgrades from the previous episode may have gone unused due to the extreme similarities to Age of Empire 2, which had these same tech items
The ziggurat icon you pictured is for a model that was kept in the game, but in a modified form. The two hidden models in the folder Doodads\Northrend\Structures\AncientZiggurat match this icon. They have upgrade animations because the model is a derivative of the one in the picture, but it's missing the spirit tower gem above it. The gem is present in its texture files and can actually be restored by using the gem from the in-game spirit tower, which retains the correct UV texture coordinates embedded in its data for where to place itself on the texture file included for the "ancient ziggurat". I've done this before where you can put the the together and it creates something that looks almost exactly like those icons Edit: You might also want to mention that everything in the "SharedModels\" folder IS USED by Particle Emitter Type 1 effects. Try killing a Red Dragon Whelp and think about what you see! But maybe you didn't really mean to imply that they were hidden. I see the same with the Night Elf and Undead Birth models in SharedModels, there. Patch 1.30 added the Naga Birth into that folder. In so doing, and by moving it, they destroy the birth animation of every custom Naga building model ever made. It's important that the world knows how these things work, so that Blizzard employees don't break them any further for custom usages, hopefully.
I bet you they had nature's touch doing something similar to death knight's deathcoil (recall that in WC2 deathcoil was just raw damage, no healing) so they probably gave it to DK instead because it's much more of an undead mechanic than a nightelf one. That's my take on it anyways.
Fun fact I have a really really old version of the game that have many of these items in game and up till now I find out that most of them got changed or removed
Only thing I demand from Blizzard is to explain how Spy in Thieves Guild was supposed to work, because the ability is in the game, but it doesn't do anything and isn't visible on the UI if added to a unit/building. #JusticeForSpy
It may ahve acted the same way it acted in Age of Empires: It allowed you to see your enemies. Or probably you were able to see where the townhalls are.
3:32 When I first saw this icon, I thought it was a skeleton's knee, but it's actually the skeleton's gloved hand holding a sword. Kinda similar to how I used to see Acolyte's "Sacrifice" ability as a spine rather than a hand holding a sacrificial dagger.
That finger of death icon looks way to similar to the warcraft 2 touch of death which death knights did have then. From memory I believe it did a sort of burn damage debuff to a selected unit. A lot of warcraft 2 ideas and assets carried over to warcraft 3 for some reason. Even the warcraft 3 alpha human 1 and 3 music sounds like warcraft 2 than what we go.
Many games (mainly RTS's from my knowledge) when in the early stages of developing a sequel import models and icons from the previous game. That way the devs can start testing the game earlier without having to wait for all the artwork and animation to get finished. Fun Fact: Heroes of Might and Magic V alpha version used A LOT of Warcraft 3 icons and models for testing the game. I don't know why they chosen WC3 instead of the HoMM.
Don't care if it makes them weak or not.. the entire concept of 'meatapult' is so awesomely unsettling. Just something about launching the corpses of your fallen enemies at their own settlement makes it seem just that little bit more awesome. I mean.. yea.. running out of corpses would suck, but still.. lol
Haha it was planned that Nerubians can spawn bugs? Imagine hoe OP that was... The best T1 shooter is able to spawn his own meatshield. No wonder they removed it :D
So awesome to see more of these videos, very interesting! Not sure if already mentioned, but the Thieves Guild model was recovered and looks pretty much like the icon.
that "regeneration aura" still exists and acts as "blight" so undead can heal when not on blight - aura of blight, under "undead unit abilities" dizziness:when your goblin zeppelin transport dies, units that were inside are slowed down upon landing it was the archdruid that served as a hero that had the wildkin transformation, you can find the beta model on hiveworkshop www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/archdruid.49781/ edit:also the Destroyer was meant to be egyptian as seen in beta (obsidian avenger) so the mana borrow had to be changed accordingly - as seen in its bad edit.
I know its a lot of researches but a video of unused stuff that are used in other games could be intersting like the malganis ultimate in heroes of the storm

The BTNPoisonArrow also looks like a slightly modified Zerg Sunken Colony attack type icon (the icon that shows the upgrade level. Ofc there is no damage upgrade for defensive buildings, so what kind of attack is remains)
Ive also found evidence about Arthas (wielding frostmourne) originally having lifesteal. There's an unused ability called "Lifesteal (frostmourne)" in the editor. Both quotes of the crypt fiend and their attack method also greatly suggests their attacks originally drained life. *Crypt Fiend*: "Be drained of life!" Also, there is a pun left in the world editor around the Gnoll Poacher unit. If you implement it as a merchenary, it will say "Hire Gnoll Poarcher", instead of Poacher. (The pun being they are shitty archers, so blizzard let their tooltip imply they are poo-archers)
darkness aura sounds like something similar to what the necropolis town in heroes of might and magic 3 did, creating a permanent fog of war around the town for the enemies
Not sure if you covered it it any of your videos but in the interface for audio files there's an announcer for the Naga race with audio such as "more gold is required" or "Must build more coral beds" It sounds like they used audio distortion effects to the voice making it sound pretty goofy.
Those are used in the Frozen Throne campaign when you play as the naga race. They were considered as a new race to be playable, but there just wasn't enough focus on naval battles.
It's the May 2001 issue. I got the translation from Hallfiry's prerelease material thread: www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/the-warcraft-3-prerelease-material-thread.155117/

Fun Fact: Heroes of Might and Magic V alpha version used A LOT of Warcraft 3 icons and models for testing the game. I don't know why they chosen WC3 instead of the HoMM.
@@khankhomrad8855 Probably because it was developed in Russia and Warcraft 3 is the most memorable fantasy game here.
@@AnMComm Is that so? Fascinating.
Don't care if it makes them weak or not.. the entire concept of 'meatapult' is so awesomely unsettling. Just something about launching the corpses of your fallen enemies at their own settlement makes it seem just that little bit more awesome.
I mean.. yea.. running out of corpses would suck, but still.. lol
Also.. Demon Hunter letting out his inner Shang Tsung.. "Your soul is mine!"
the icon dizzy is in the game thats the debuff icon when units are droped out from a killed zepelin
I love the sound of your voice man! Not boring at all!

I found the magazine in my storage! And I read it, pretty interesting!
(It even had a full version of Diablo I !!!) Good times
12:55 Um...Well, here it is. The channel animation for sorceresses. Also, necromants in TFT in second mission use Channel.
Twilight is in fact a sort of eclipse blocking the sun. The purpose? To allow the night elves to use their shadowmeld ability, I suppose.
And their night vision advantage
And regeneration and moon well regeneration
Oh, and that BTNInvulnerable is used for the potion of invulnerability buff
_That's_ where I've seen it before! Good eye. It's always interesting when the only place an icon is seen is on a buff.
2:29 is used in the opening cinematic
BRING OUT THE PANDAPULTS
the one thing they could actually have some use for!
@@MajkaSrajka that's a big finger from me to you for that
@@kudrzyk weeb DansGame
Haha it was planned that Nerubians can spawn bugs?
Imagine hoe OP that was... The best T1 shooter is able to spawn his own meatshield. No wonder they removed it :D
Yey another one to watch .. I really like this channel
Man you've really dug into it. Impressive.
So awesome to see more of these videos, very interesting!
Not sure if already mentioned, but the Thieves Guild model was recovered and looks pretty much like the icon.
Man ! This is well done ! Thanks for this video. Very interesting
that "regeneration aura" still exists and acts as "blight" so undead can heal when not on blight - aura of blight, under "undead unit abilities"
dizziness:when your goblin zeppelin transport dies, units that were inside are slowed down upon landing
it was the archdruid that served as a hero that had the wildkin transformation, you can find the beta model on hiveworkshop
www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/archdruid.49781/
edit:also the Destroyer was meant to be egyptian as seen in beta (obsidian avenger) so the mana borrow had to be changed accordingly - as seen in its bad edit.
2:14 since malganis has that as heroic ability in hots I think it confirms it
"Vanquish the weak!"
2:13 This is one of the ult of Mal'Ganis in Heroes of the Storm!
What's the music you use around 6:00?
One Night in Karazhan, the Hearthstone expansion.
Abelhawk Thanks! Just wanted to let you know that your content are amazing!
Maybe "everything I touch either dies or comes back to life" is a reference to the TV show Pushing Up The Daises?
That show came out about 5 years after Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, so no, but that's a funny comparison!
Why did the older beta icons have lower quality?
Also, in Reforged, the Undean Haunted Gold Mine finally has the normal icon.
Can't believe you are still finding more in the files, you're aweome.
I know its a lot of researches but a video of unused stuff that are used in other games could be intersting like the malganis ultimate in heroes of the storm

This is a great video!

I love watching your videos, mate. Keep up this good work, please. Now I need to rewatch all the other Easter Eggs videos again. :D
Someone on the eeve.org forum has the same avatar as you
17:25 ironic that scroll wich represents scroll of the Town portal named after taxi.
The BTNPoisonArrow also looks like a slightly modified Zerg Sunken Colony attack type icon (the icon that shows the upgrade level. Ofc there is no damage upgrade for defensive buildings, so what kind of attack is remains)
BTW where are the spell cry sounds? Are they in the files of current wc3 or from site like scrolloflore?
www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/wc3-beta-hidden-soundfiles.299754/
Check the files and you'll see the Priestess of the moon having a warcry.. I dunno maybe it's just mine but the world editor doesn't show em.
1:33 - Altered Beast
Ive also found evidence about Arthas (wielding frostmourne) originally having lifesteal.
There's an unused ability called "Lifesteal (frostmourne)" in the editor.
Both quotes of the crypt fiend and their attack method also greatly suggests their attacks originally drained life.
*Crypt Fiend*: "Be drained of life!"
Also, there is a pun left in the world editor around the Gnoll Poacher unit. If you implement it as a merchenary, it will say "Hire Gnoll Poarcher", instead of Poacher.
(The pun being they are shitty archers, so blizzard let their tooltip imply they are poo-archers)
Their little spiders stick to the unit for a bit, right? Would make sense.
Brandon Kellner
Plus, they return to the crypt fiend.
Good to know abelhawk dosent do al the work
0:44 those undead buildings look so much better than today's.
Also, why are the quality of the beta icons are much worse then the standard ones?
Loving your content man, great vid!
darkness aura sounds like something similar to what the necropolis town in heroes of might and magic 3 did, creating a permanent fog of war around the town for the enemies
That would be AMAZING.
No mention of the "Lure" item? A giant bbq rib which caused all creeps in around 1 and half screens to run the region where the item was cast?
1:17 I just noticed you called the Lich "Flufhamster" :D
Great video man!
08:50 Twilight... I'm dead! xD Love your videos!
12:53 Where do you get an englisch version of that article?! Greetings from Germany :)
I'm also interested in the German original.
It's the May 2001 issue. I got the translation from Hallfiry's prerelease material thread: www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/the-warcraft-3-prerelease-material-thread.155117/
Infernal Birth sound effect reminds me of Frost Wyrm's voiceline. Anyway it's cool knowing all of these easter eggs
I MISSED THIS, AND YOU
Ziggurats 3 forms probably are their defence upgrades, like the current ones form the current undead supply structure (it was called ziggurat too right?)
well..the beastmaster quillboard now passively have quillspray active, its their basic attack now
