    The sword crossing, the tapestry, proud Otto enjoying his life’s work, the veiled & somber Queen kissing his forehead, the Septons marking his forehead,.. "All Hail His Grace...King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men"...finally justice done to the proclamation of a new Absolute Monarch in GoT. I was blown away by the details in the coronation. It felt like watching Nicholas II being crowned in an Orthodox ceremony with all the hollow pomp & circumstance of a rotting system. It's what I'd always envisioned from a GoT coronation. Tom Glynn-Carney was terrific in bringing out Aegon's fear, hesitation, pride & euphoria all at once. I'm glad they kept the much despised Criston putting the Conqueror's crown on Aegon II's head. The Kingmaker is born! What the show's doing really well is the details, down to splitting the treasury or locking up servants. Usually the passionate debates, the treachery, the heartbreak are glossed over & we only see the regime change as "fait accompli". This bring to life the mechanism that historically goes behind a coup, which I assume is as emotionally taxing for the people seizing power. That's why I like agonized & conflicted Alicent more than her steadfast source counterpart. It feels more flesh & blood. She vacillates but her messianic fear for her children fates her to make a cursed gamble.

  • @Stephie_L
    @Stephie_L Рік тому +21

    I don't think Rhaenys was planting the seed for Alicent to be Queen, but I think that line was to show her how she isn't using her power. After this conversation, we see Alicent confront Otto for using her as a pawn. As you know from GoT, Tywin was the true King not Joffery. And you know, I think that Aegon has the potential to really be a complex character. He has allowed himself to believe he has love and power now after all these years of not having it. He could become even more ruthless in order to keep that love or he might turn a bit later if he ever finds out the truth that Alicent misinterpreted the song of ice and fire (which further cements his fear of never being loved/ chosen). I've not read the books and I don't care about it either. I prefer to make up my mind about these characters as the show progresses. Anyway, great reaction. I cannot wait for episode 10! :)

    "The child is a boy Aemma. I'm certain of it. I've never been more certain of anything. The dream. It was clearer than a memory. Our son was born wearing Aegon's iron crown. And I heard the sound of thundering hooves, splintering shields, and ringing swords, as the bells of the Grand Sept tolled...and I placed my heir upon the Iron Throne..."
    Viserys was right. It was just that it was destined to be the boy he refused to acknowledge.

    Here are a few recommendations with Ifans
    - Mr. Nobody (2009), An underrated Sci Fi movie dealing with choice. Jared Leto is also in the cast
    -Anonymous (2011), It was a decent film, imo, but thought he was excellent in the movie

    This episode was the closest thing to AGOAT era Thrones, with the tension, the suspense, the uncertainty, the ruthless purges, the amorality, the sinking feeling of injustice. We have gotten impatient. I remember having to wait years for compeuppance for characters like Joffrey or Ramsay. Now everyone is screaming for blood the moment things don't go our way. "You desire not to be free but to make a window in the wall of your prison." Wow! That one cuts deep! The visuals set the tone. So does the Hightower theme. King’s Landing without Viserys already feels dark and ominous. The way everything is filmed during the Alicent Rhaenys scene or the Otto Alicent scene. The sinister low lighting, Otto looking calm and nefarious as ever. Alicent struggling against her destiny. The little rays of the setting sun pouring in to mirror the metaphorical window. Beautifully shot. "Reluctance to murder is not a weakness." Very moral. But it's the Ned trap of mercy. Btw randomly laughing thinking just how good it was to insert the "every woman is an image of the mother" line. It's such a nuclear grade d bag thing to say. The viceral reaction people have the moment Criston is on screen..it's Olly levels of hatred lol. Criston has become one of the most hated characters in Thrones world. I love it!

    Rhys Ifans's been in a lot of stuff. You might remember him from "The Amazing Spiderman" with Andrew Garfield. He was Dr. Curt Connors, the guy who turned into the Lizard. He also briefly appeared on "Spiderman: No Way Home" at the end when the Lizard is cured and turned back into a human, though I believe that was stock footage from the original movie since he doesn't have any lines. It seems the actor didn't want to reprise the role and the actor who did the voice for the Lizard was someone else. He was also Rasputin in the Kingsman prequel with Ralph Fiennes.

    I know this is just the first season, but this show has the potential to surpass Game Of Thrones. Personally, I feel the characters are more nuanced and complex. Rhaenyra stan learns about ambiguity & moral dilemma that comes with making a gamble of a lifetime, & finds anything more than Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss versions of characters hard to process. The Queen's issue wasn't that Aegon shouldn't be king. It was that the Queen and the Hand had two completely different visions of ruling, and Renly's "he who holds the king holds the kingdom" is apparently a hard concept.
    In show GC, her issue wasn't that Aegon shouldn't be king, it was that she felt betrayed they plotted behind her back. And that she was nervous & agitated about Aegon's mettle, which is normal when you're taking a leap of faith. Her convos with Rhaenys & Otto made it clear she was steadfast that Aegon should be king.

    It is always important to listen to Alicent's daughter when she has something to say. She gets the least screen time, but if she says something it is a spoiler for future events. "The beast beneath the Boards" were her words this time. She has also made predictions before. The loss of Aemond's eye. So whenever she has something to say, you should listen.

  • @C_James479
    @C_James479 Рік тому +1

    I never took the prophecy miscommunication as being the main plot driver. It’s the biggest misconception. Saying "you will make a fine queen" doesn't mean Alicent completely changed her mind & gave up on a 20 year old fear/grudge. It more likely was a heartfelt gesture where she got carried away in the moment. The coup was always gonna happen because of all the primogeniture/dynastic reasons. The prophecy was simply used by Otto & others as a propaganda pretext and by Alicent as a self-deluding tool of moral justification. Which goes along with her show character of "trying to hide behind the cloak of righteousness". It was her trying to convince herself (not others), what she was doing was moral & right. What one might call “house of accidents and misunderstandings” is but a quintessential Greek tragedy.

    Even monarchies cannot function without a basic framework of laws and not just by “it was duh kang’s word”. Otherwise, if a king as influential as Jaehaerys' word meant nothing soon as he died, then why should Viserys' word mean anything after his death? The Great Council was clearly meant to be a legal body (in style of the Zemsky Sobor that chose the Russian Tsar) which didn't just determine succession that one time, it was meant to set precedence for all future successions. As a legitimist I take the council’s decision as final. Which means Aegon II is the rightful heir. Unfortunately, Viserys immediately spat on that precedence set by the Great Council.

  • @eadred9164
    @eadred9164 Рік тому

    Rhaenys hasn't read the book Fire & Blood to know of horrors to come. So her pre-emptively nuking half her own family would've been OP. Having said that, the Rhaenys bit was to give audience a 'send home happy' moment which wasn't necessary. The coronation was fantastic in itself. But gawd forbid the ''bad guys" are on top in one episode. Those who thought lowborns of KL have any obligation to support Rhaenyra are in for big disappointments. Aegon claims his birthright from popular King Jaehaerys' Great Council ordering that the king's firstborn male son is the next king. Viserys himself won it over Rhaenys like that. Best part of this was the politics, less dragons the better. Despairing mom version of alicent does highlight her humanity more than the colder iteration of the actual green council. A well needed adjustment imo but also a continuation of her Harrenhall or knife scene mistake. They've constantly shown subtleties in that character which the audience tend to wilfully ignore since we're watching this as a team sport and we gotta cheer team lovable manipulative dad. Her being more humanized shouldn't be an issue unless one wants the show to remain grotesquely tilted towards Black (Laenor death,Rhaenyra ordering Vaemond's death, etc)

    "everything u feel for me….as ur queen." I can't handle that level of palpable sexual tension lol. Ironic cause in a way they are the cersei and jaime of this show lol.the last 3 mins aside,i thought this was an excellent episode. it felt like a white house political thriller with a "race against time" feel from start to finish suspense. When Otto was moving around these chess pieces, Beesbury screaming, Caswell hanging..I was on the edge of my seat. I knew how good it was when it had reactors already coping for compeuppance lol. Tom Glynn-Carney showed excellent range as Aegon. But it got overshadowed by 3 mins of a Rhaenys "happy ending" smdh lmao. This crowning ceremony was a visual historygasm, finally befitting a king in got verse. All the actors for Otto, Alicent, Aegon did a great job. And that "window in the wall of your prison" line is one of the best lines of series we've heard so far.

    It doesn't matter that Criston didn't get to split open Beesbury's throat F&B style.The slimy way it happened was actually more fitting for his character. Everybody in the show does not need to be a badass. We already have a bunch of sigma chads. 'Cool villains' are dime a dozen to come by. It's much more of a challenge to make a character that is actually truly despised by the people the way they loathed someone like an Olly. People absolutely loathe Criston. Anytime I watch a reaction channel and the moment Criston is on screen he generates a visceral hatred. Every week there's a viral tweet about how much people can't stand Criston. A side panel of him saying "every woman is the image of the Mother" & "spoiled c-word" has like 50k RTs. The character is doing more than a perfect job of what it was intended to do.
