@@ghostwolf1435 And the best part - that book is complete. There's no weird danger of having to "do their best" to replicate what GRRM had in mind. But given that that book is told from 2 unreliable and very different narrators there's a lot of wiggle room to play with our expectations still.

Daemon Targaryen aka the Rogue Prince is my favorite Targaryen in the lore of ASOIAF and WOW !!! Matt Smith portrayal of the character is nothing less than perfection, he embodied what I imagined for this character in live action format. Even doe I might get pushed back IMO Daemon is the best/coolest Targaryen in the whole Targaryen lore, and I'm hype that the show runner's cast the perfect actor for this character.
It's so rare to see a character that matches what you envisioned while reading the book, I get super stoked about it too 😂

Paddy Considine, who plays King Viserys, is also a director. He made a wonderful (but devastating) film called "Tyrannosaur" starring Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman. Definitely worth a watch.
I used to keep films in folders on an old laptop.... That film was kept under the tag, epic depression
He's also in Peaky Blinders. He plays the priest in season 3.
One of his best roles is in Hot Fuzz.
Peter Mullan I believe is in Rings of Power, which releases in just over a week. Man what a time, we may have not one but potentially two big budget amazing fantasy shows on our hands.

Fantastic first episode. I thought they did really well as far as world building goes. Acting feels solid. I hate getting my hopes up, but damn if they aren’t rising.

They both NAILED their roles. For as wild as Daemon is, you can already see that these brothers do love each other. I really look forward to seeing how they continue to interact.

Also yes this show is actually based off the family history of the Targaryen’s that George wrote for the book “Fire and Blood”
King never said anything about not wanting his daughter lol sure his priority was getting a male heir but that was important back then he still loved her. Also he really didn’t choose the baby over her the mom would had died regardless but he chose to save the son. The choices were basically save the child or lose both. Daemon loves his brother and niece you can tell if you look back at the funeral as well but he’s also very truthful and tells it like it is.
I thought they said “choose one or lose both” as in he had to choose to save either aemma or the baby or do nothing and lose both.
@@melroseface1819 nah writers at the end of the episode even said she was dying regardless just like daemon wife…it was a choice of letting her die peacefully or just cutting her open to get the baby that could die as well smh
I love the face cam shots, seeing your dawning realisation during the more intense moments is extremely entertaining.
Enjoyed this first episode a lot. Every time they referenced the events of GoT though I kind of cringed thinking about how the White Walkers were dealt with in like 3 episodes once they crossed the wall. I’m happy the premise of the show allows for more of the political maneuvering and backstabbing that made the earlier seasons of GoT so engaging,
same here i thought it was a great first episode, but when they started talking about winter and actually said "a song of ice and fire," i rolled my eyes so hard i could see the back of my skull lol.

Honestly, since it's based on the fire and blood books, i have a feeling if there's any flashforwards they'll be heavily stylized, i could definitely see them showing a premonition of the last battle as it should have been, but it won't be like GoT. Atleast i hope.

It is said that we will meet 9 dragons in this first season, and this episode introduced us to two of them. Syrax is Rhaenyra's dragon and they grew up together. Daemon's dragon is Caraxes and is known as the Blood Wyrm. His long neck and dark red color gives him a distinct look. Caraxes is around 50 years old at this time and had one previous rider.
There are supposed to be three different races/types of dragons show in this show. Each type has a distinct look and its own strengths and weaknesses.
I loved this pilot. I am already invested in the characters and the story is captivating. Can't wait for next week.
Viserys didn’t have a choice between saving his wife or his child - the Queen was going to die regardless, so the only decision he had to make was whether or not he’d attempt to save the child via the new method/ C-Section. Like you said though, I wish they would’ve put Aemma out of her misery before they gutted her alive.
Paddy Consadine really impressed me with his performance this episode. "My wife and son are DEAD!" Oof - I felt that grief.
Also, while the series is based on existing material, the book it's derived from is written in a historical style, so much of the dialogue will be new and unique.
Plus, loving the new outro Brandon.

The Queen was going to die no matter what. He Chose to save the Baby in hopes he can at least save one of them. I do wish he would have at least told her what was happening. Gut wrenching stuff.
I find it so annoying ppl miss what the maester said that options are loose them both or try to save the child. Like if u don’t do anything, she will suffer longer with the dead child inside her womb. Only other option if you wanted both to die somewhat peacefully is to give her poison dose of milk of the poppy.
The episode won me over tbh. I had some low expectations ngl. I've very glad to see from the 'Weeks Ahead' trailer that there will be more than just one dragon involved

Paddy Considine is a fantastic actor. Dead Man's Shoes is one of the best revenge movies ever made in my opinion. So good to see him in a major role on GOT.
He really is. I hated his character in Peaky Blinders. I really like him in HOTD. If I didn’t know, I never would have guessed that they are the same actor
Since Dan and Dave are not showrunners for this show, I am allowing myeslf to be optimistic and open minded about this show being good. First episode was a promising start.
Also, this one is working with completed source material.
Aerys targaryen, the king we saw in bran's vision, is Daenerys's father and that was only 17 years before GOT started, shortly before jaime lannister slayed him

Daemon doesn’t care about the rules or anyone’s feelings. If he hates someone like he hates Otto Hightower, Daemon will do anything he can to embarrass that person to the ends of Westeros and back again. I’d dare say the Prince is a sociopath 😂

I watched all of your breaking bad reactions but couldnt watch any others because I havent seen the other shows you react to. So glad to finally share another show with you! We're in for a ride!
I like how the characters showed complications, good and bad qualities. Damon is provactive, violent, but direct and honest. Otto is cold calculating and we are made to question his loyalty to the king or himself first. The king is calm, considered, loyal to his family and even those lesser nobles and the commoners.
The king is also too naive with his advisors
@@theawesomeman9821 I was watching part of episode 1 again. And I certainly noticed King Viserys only confronted his brother from a position of power with his kingsguard in attendance. Perhaps if he was braver he would have talked to Damon in private to hear what his brother had to say. The remarks about the small council did not seem well received by Viserys. But they seem possibly true.

He was betting gold coins. The currency in Westeros since the Conquest has been: Golden dragons, silver stags, copper stars, pennies, half-pennies, and groats.
LMAO in the first 30 seconds and I already know this reaction is gunna be great. Like yeah, season 8 is not great but it didn't kill my children or anything, all the other seasons were really good or incredible even. This first ep definitely left me satisfied and I'm excited for more!

For your question on if the show was based on anything that George wrote, this part of the show is based on a section from GRRM's "Fire and Blood" which is a 'history book' of the 300 years before GoT written from the perspective of the Maesters.
The cuts from the throne are likely causing tetanus - the thing you get a shot for in our modern era. The birth/c-section part: The king could either attempt to save the child, or highly likely watch the child mother both pass. There basically was no saving his wife at that point.

There is a series made by HBO that comes as a special feature on the DVD called Game of Thrones History and Lore showing the backstory from Aegon’s Conquest of the Seven.. well six because Dorne was never conquered to Robert’s Rebellion to how Danny and Viseyrs survived all in the respected actors narration. It’s also available on UA-cam so I’d highly recommend it! You’d enjoy it
Detective Sergeant Andy Wainwright from "Hot Fuzz" is the same actor that portrays King Viserys Targaryen.

There were two Jaeherys - the guy in the intro of this episode, and Dany’s grandfather. Brandon is likely remembering mentions of the latter from the GOT show.

My heart swelled when we saw the Red Keep and the Sept of Baelor as the dragon flew over King’s Landing. I love this world, and I’m happy to be back! Perfect timing post-BCS.
Dialogue on point, delivery on point, cinematography off the scale, generally top tier production. My only complaint is the rapid pacing for a premier, difficult to keep up, especially for casual viewers. A solid 8/10 for me tho.

I really enjoyed this episode. One episode in and I’m completely invested in the characters and the storylines. Very solid.
Decided to upgrade my tv package to 4K, Atmos sound for this. Not bad so far.
Small nitpicks on the CGI but overall it was a fantastic first episode.
I love how even at 4k the characters and costumes look like they belong and don't have that flawless just got my skin care treatment done look that Netflix and Amazon shows have.
I too thought the CGI looked a little cheap
Fully agree on both fronts. CGI looked dodgy here and there, but it's bearable. And thank Jebus that characters don't have that instagram influencer vibe like Witcher does, I was scared of that. Loved the episode, can't wait for more!

Aegon the Conqueror was when the Targaryens conquored and united the seven kingdoms of Westeros. He was the first King on the Iron Throne, and what the timeline "AC" was named after.
So Aegone taking the throne was 0 AC (Aegon Conquest). IIRC House of Dragons is around 100AC. Not sure if we'll see any flash back to Aegon and his dragons. But I believe from the teasers, we'll see his queens dragon Vhagar (even though theyre long gone, Vhagar is still alive in this timeline). The skull under Kings Landing is Balereons, the largest known dragon who was Aegons.
My personal opinion, is I would have liked to see the original Ice & Fire series with Naomi Watts if they wanted to go deeper into the Wight Walkers. That show apparently was to be set thousands of years earlier, before dragons. It was to be after the long night, arrival of the First Men, the Children of the Forest, the first wight walker (the night king), the building of the wall and the creation of the nights watch. It would have been amazing to get an origin story for the Night King, especially if it turns out he is a Stark.
I hope this series doesnt go to deep into the Wight Walker prophecy and focuses more on the Targaryen civil war. We already know from GoT that Viserys & Daenerys are the last notable left from house Targaryen. We know that Targaryens held power from Aegon until their father Aerys II (The Mad King) was killed by Jamie "The King Slayer" Lanister and his eldest son Rhaegar killed by Robert Baratheon, who then took the throne. It'll be interesting to see the fate of the house Targaryen, since I believe most of them and their dragons die in the war under Rhaenyra during this House of the Dragon timeline.

The show is based on a book by GRRM, that was an in-universe history book written by a maester from accounts by two characters, a septon and a dwarf, but their accounts differ in places so you never really know whether anything either of them claim is true, so I hope the show presents information in this way too.
I would assume the show would tell us more of what actually happened and leave less up for interpretation. The unreliable narrator method works well in written form, but for a visual medium, it's more likely to show us what actually happened.
@@CraigKostelecky I actually suspect we might have a different form of unreliable narrator already present in the first episode. When Otto Hightower tells the king about how Matt Smith (don't remember the character's name) referred to the king's son as the "heir for a day", we never actually saw him say that himself, it cut away before he did. Then Smith never actually admitted it when confronted about it. The scene of him in the brothel also didn't seem like he was celebrating it, he just gave a toast.
@@charlie3627 That line is one that was explicitly stated in the novel, so I don’t think they’d change that. Also Daemon never denied it.
But I do agree with your point that if someone only tells us something happened, we can be skeptical about it.
@@CraigKostelecky it being stated in the novel is exactly my point, just because it's said in the novel doesn't mean it really happened, because the book is written by a maester who heard the story from a septon who probably heard the story from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone etc...
When Lord Beesbury bet 5 dragons on Daemon he was betting 5 gold coins. Gold dragons are the highest form of currency in Westeros followed by silver stags and copper coins.

Balerion aka The Black Dread, was Aegon's Dragon, and riding Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar, Aegon his 2 sister-wifes united Westeros under Targaryen rule (thats why their banner is a 3-headed dragon).
It was the largest Dragon ever seen in Westeros, so powerful it once literally melted a fortress with its fire breath.
Would be awesome to see some of that in a flashback or something.

This first episode was very good. Loved the cast. I remember Rhys Ifans from Little Nicky, among other early 2000 movies and holy hell he is awesome in his older age. Daemon (?) was also an amazing casting.
This is all based on George’s writings as the new director( I forget his name) said he wants it to be George’s story not his version of George’s story which I think everyone was happy to hear since D&D made it their own and screwed it up.

About the jousting, it depends on the rules given. Sometimes it's fought with no rules so not cheating.
Daemon's helmet looks cool but no real joust would be done with that type. As you can see all other riders have visors, I think what they are trying to show is that Daemon is so certain he won't die that chooses not to wear one. In jousting the lance would often splinter so a visor protected the face... but still even then it could go through the eye slit.
Bran never had a vision of Aegon Targaryen in GoT, you might be thinking of Rhaegar… Jon Snow’s father.

Little late to the party, an apologies if another comment already mentioned this, but Aemma was not just Viserys' wife and queen, she was his and Daemon's cousin. They likely knew each other as children. So double whammy losing her like that. And that means Daemon wasn't just grieving a sister in law. We know how he loves his family, this was likely devastating for him as well.
i feel it worth mentioning, Viserys wasn't choosing between his child or his wife, both her and the baby would have died had they done nothing. still hard to watch though
