    Tumeric will bloom a white orchid looking flowers when your rizoms are 2-3 yrs old. I grow both Ginger and Tumeric in 3gal pots. Lots of compost tea and vermastera tea. Tumeric can get 4ft tall so put them in 5 gal grow pot. They make beautiful patio plant.

      Thanks for the information! I tried to grow turmeric and garlic, never got too tall (and then my cat decided it was a great place for her to pee: dead). I grow worms indoors, since this is Minnesota tundra area, they eat all the vegetables that I eat, which makes their tea as good as it gets, never occured to me to use it for my turmeric and ginger.

    Thanks so much for this video! I would really like to grow all of these and really appreciate help and tips.
    I'm in 6a so we certainly freeze. Let's say I start my turmeric & ginger this month. Come October, 8 months, I'll need to harvest. What if I wanted to harvest but also continue growing? If I pull it up and repot to bring inside do you know if that might be successful? Might just have to experiment but figure I'll ask someone with experience.
    Also, I bought ginger and turmeric from store before I was ready to plant. Automatically I put in the fridge, turmeric feels a little bit soft now. Should I not put in fridge prior to planting? Thanks for your time!

    I have to say I always have left my ginger in the soil and pulled them as needed. I did however pull them all last season because they became so full in the little container I grow them in. I suppose I left a couple little ones behind because I have new plants sprouting. I generally keep the soil fairly dry so I don't get rot. But living in Florida we have a bonus of hot dry weather most of the time. I grow mine under a tree for partial shade. Going to start turmeric this year. I will be following your advice on this. I have followed your advice on growing sweet potato slips and it works like a charm. Great channel full of good knowledge. Thank you.

    Gary, if you happen to see this, or anyone else who knows ofc.
    I've tried this before but never left it that long indoors - probably why it didn't work.
    Soil temp here in Melbourne Australia would be over 50 in Sep/Oct (often earlier) so would you suggest starting these in say July indoors?
    I'm sure once the ginger is established it will overwinter fine as we have ornamental ginger growing in the front garden with zero care.

      I just started growing ginger for the first time 2.5 months ago (already 3 feet tall). I left the rhizome(from farmer's market) on my cutting board where it got sun and I cut onions all the time, it sprouted fast. Learned later that cut onions and moisture speed up the rooting/sprouting process. Good Luck

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah generally. Let it absorb water, cut pieces. Let the cuts dry. Or dip cut ends in wood ash or sulfur powder. However, in a sterile starting mix it is pretty safe to just plant them. But I like to show the right way.

    I grew ginger indoors a couple years ago in a container by cutting it up, and basically replicating what you did but I used potting soil not seed starter. The sprouts grew to be about a foot tall indoors over the winter but I never cut the sprout/roots from the original planting. When I removed the plant from the pot and planted on the E side of my home it didn’t seem to grow much, but it lived. When I dug it up in the fall I wasn’t very impressed because I basically had the same amount I started with. Now I’m wondering.... if I had removed the sprout with roots if I would have seen better growth or is it just that you can use the original bulb right away and get another bulb from the sprout? I’ll be interested in your update and I’m thinking about going to get some and try again....good luck with yours. Thanks for another great video.

      The sweet potato is not a true potato but a member of the morning glory family. If you want tubers from slips its' best to seperate the parent tuber more bc of black rot(aka mold) once that starts you'll loose all tubers and vines there isn't a cure for it, you'll need to start over in a different garden spot or replace container mix. Garden on!

      L Garden when I grow Ginger, I put it into a grow pot 3-5 gal size, the place in a spot where it'll get 2-3 hrs of morning sun and about same for eve sun. I put pots out about Mid-May or earlier if temps are 65f or warmer. Sometimes I put them out too early and have to cover with a tarp until its' warmer or bring them inside, which ever works for you. I feed both Ginger and Tumeric the same liquid fertilizer at the same time. They are cousins in same plant family. I use compost tea and earthworm tea, Miracle Boost, and miracle grow sometimes, every 2 weeks, they will grow faster once it gets warm to hot humid weather. I gently hose off the plants if its' not real humid..My plants rizomes stay in the grow pots until I need a piece for cooking and I harvest a new growth tuber piece. You may find the rizomes need to grow a full season before you can harvest it.. be patient they'll reward you. Bring your rizomes inside before the temps drop below 60f to continue growth. When they're ready to go dormant allow the stems and leaves to die back then cut off dead stalks. Rest 3 mos, then water to restart them, keep lightly moist until roots and shoots grow, put in a sunny window or under a plant light. I use Pro-Mix if avail but any seed start mix will work. Good luck!
