The only thing missing from your analogy is that when the chefs serve us "what's best for us," they are still shoveling bad food onto our plates. This isn't a matter of genius, high-art film producers failing to cater to low-brow audiences. The art is bad. The ideology is obvious and unblended, the politics are formulaic, and the lessons hit audiences over the head with the subtlety of a Chick Tract. They are making BAD ART. If audiences want a Big Mac, Hollywood is forcing them to eat filet-o-fish while calling it foie gras and can't understand why nobody likes it.
The more common occurrence is something along the lines of junk food being put out, audiences eating it up, and cooks defending the junk food because it's "for the fans".

I speak from my own experience, as well as talk to, read articles, and watch videos by long time fans. Many of us can see the errors. Lack of character development, failure to follow cannon because either they don't care or they never did their research. There are gross errors in the "science," and other issues. In one video on YT, someone pointed out over 1 error in continuity, plot, failure to adhere to canon, etc per minute of the entire episode of Picard! If Discovery had been made with no ties to Star Trek, I could have watched it, groaned at the errors, but enjoyed it for what it was. Instead, it is being passed off as Star Trek. That it is not! A very large part of a popular franchise succeeding is to appeal to the long time fans because they are a guaranteed audience and many are vocal about telling people they know about a good show to watch. Instead, when fans point out the errors and what they think needs to be done to remedy the problem, the people involved with the show berate the fans, tell them not to watch it, and double down on their approach. I stand by my criticisms.

Well, the restaurant... you've been there a time or two before... (like with Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghost-Busters, Terminator, etc...). You've ordered a specific item each time... a steak, in this example. Every piece of meat (sequel) is a unique piece, but you expect certain things to be very similar. Then, you walk into the same restaurant (theater) and order the steak... and the new chef (director, producer, writer, etc) sends you a shit sandwich... but CALLS it a "steak"... and tells you that it's really what you wanted AND needed...
But it doesnt say who to entertain and that is the problem! Scifi fans are rare, hardcore fans more rare, they want to make money, so they choose the biggest audience, IDIOTS that dont care about legacy!

It can be a great thing when the chef uses his skill and knowledge to add an unexpected touch to your steak, and thus positively subvert your expectation for the meal. Ignoring your order entirely, however, and throwing a trough of slop in front of you and telling you you'll eat it and like is more an apt description of what Hollywoke is doing these days. The entertainment industry is going to have a rude awakening once we come out the other side of this global crisis.

For once I disagree with Midnight's Edge. They are presenting the situation much simpler than it really is. Movie makers have a right to take risks and make art. Not just entertainment that fulfills every expected cliche. We as an audience also have a right to judge their art for themselves. And reject their Emperor's New Clothes trick whenever they go: Only wise people can see the depth of our movies.

That's at the base of the problem. The mainstream access media needs it's special place with the studios to make money but to do that it can't always talk truthfully. We the fans know BS when we read it so we have turned to other outlets, i.e. UA-cam (fandom menance) and independent content creators to tell it straight. The access media is losing its audience so instead of fixing the problem by getting truthful, they lash out at at customers pushing even more away. I believe many filmmakers don't care that they are part of a "business". They believe they are a sanctioned propaganda machine. They do not believe that we are entitled to our personal opinions. My school teachers drove simple ideas into my head way back in the 20th century. I could worship how I choose, I could vote how I choose and I could speak or write about it. These are basic ideas that help me on a daily basis. Therefore I will skip whatever damned movies I please.
Saying “the audience is entitled” makes no sense because the point of movies is to generate revenue. So, by default, movies have to cater to whatever the audience wants. It’s like saying “the audience feels entitled to what they want.”

They used the example of filmmakers being great chefs and audiences asking for a big mac. Well, there's the media's problem. The audience didn't go into a fancy restaurant. They went into a MacDonald's and ordered a Big Mac and then the person behind the counter tried to served them some fancy, fru-fru health food. Filmmakers can be 'great artists' when they're working on original movies, not long-established franchises with wide audience appeal. That doesn't mean they have to slavishly follow the source material when making new entries. You can wiggle a bit with the story just like Burger King makes variants on the Whopper with a different sauce or some new toppings. But, they still need to retain the soul of the franchise.

Film makers, actors and higher ups in Hollywood are in my mind akin to those self righteous artists who show of their work at art galleries and ask the patrons what they think and when they don;t get what they want to hear, they lash out, calling them closed/small minded, they don;t know art and their their works are too sophisticated for the common man to understand and tell them to piss off. They need to understand that this is a symbiotic relationship. You give the people what they like, they in turn give you their money so you can make more are, if you want to do what you personally like on the side, fine, go for it but do not try to substitute what generates mass appeal with your personally preferred work and expect them to simply lap it up.

Also, if you're doing an adaptation of something, you're not making something new. If you don't like the thing being adapted, don't adapt it and create something new instead that can be judged on its own merits. For the restaurant analogy, you're paying for a steak, so you expect a steak. If you want to create a new menu item, create it and name it something new. Nobody likes it when you make a new vegan dish and call it steak.
I love this analogy, but I think a better one would be this... Imagine you're at a store and want to buy soda. There's a bottle of Cola there. You snag it, and while walking out through the parking lot you take a swig and it tastes too chemically... you realize you got "diet" cola by mistake. You go back in the store asking for a refund, but the people at the store say; "No, you got regular Cola there, NOT diet." and they point to the label showing it's clearly labeled regular "Cola". To prove a point you buy another bottle, this time of "diet" Cola to do your own taste test. You swig the diet and it tastes like water. There's not even bubbles in it. It's just water with a few drops of brown food coloring in it. You go back to the store to complain that the Cola isn't Cola, it's diet, and the diet isn't diet, it's just plain water. The people at the store treat you like you're crazy claiming that's just how things are and that they've always been this way.... This is pretty much how I feel about, not just entertainment, but the world in general nowadays. I'm telling people "no, it wasn't always like this, things have changed" and saying "I'd like something similar to what they use to make but no one does it anymore" and I come off looking crazy because people just go by a label or a poster or advertising. And this is a great analogy for the Overton window. What's considered "right" nowadays would be considered "left" about a decade or so ago. So what's considered "left" nowadays is some super whack job nonsense that wouldn't have been considered or dreamt of 10years back. We've all been conditioned to drinking "diet" under the guise of normal soda, while normal soda has been phased out of existence.

This is the most clear explanation of what is going on. Someone please send this to Hollywood Directors and actors. It would also be helpful if characters stood up for the fans and audience by saying I will not reprise my role as X if the directors are going to change their character arch or their characters fundamental qualities. Example: Mark Hamill should have walked away when he saw what was happening to Luke Skywalker (I know it was too late when he saw this happening in TLJ), and the cast that grew up watching Star Wars should have dropped their roles immediately.

That was the 1965 Ford Galaxie LTD, and it was a ringing success and hugely influential on the industry leading to a trend of fancier cars from "low-priced" makes that encroached on "mid-price" brands, and towards luxury rather than performance in full-size sedans. Besides not being called "Edsel", the biggest difference was timing.
My wife had never seen Young Guns so we watched the other night. This movie was never considered great but, compared to what I've seen the past couple of years with very few exceptions this was head and shoulders over the crap coming out of Hollywood. It caught me of guard. It's time for Hollywood to fail and hopefully others will start making movies. I just don't want to see anything being put out by these people.
When it came to Star Trek after TNG, the writers of DS9 wanted to make something truly different from the mystery of the week episodic show they had just wrapped. Fans initially hated it and many preferred VOY, seeing it as a return to form for the franchise. Though DS9 was divisive, it tested the comfortable notions of the Star Trek universe and still holds up to this day while VOY feels like the franchise running out of gas. In the end, the VOY writers moved on to ENT where the franchise as it had been up to then died, it's viewers decamping for DS9's creative successor, BSG. They key, as the video makes clear, is having writers intimately familiar with the franchises they are handed. That has to be paired with the ability to evolve the franchise in a natural way rather than repeating itself until it becomes creatively bankrupt. Risks should be taken, even if some fans might initially be put off. Subversion of expectations can be effective if it makes sense and be creatively satisfying. I worry that the fan reactions to Star Wars, Trek, and Doctor Who will push good writers away. They'll see these franchises as too hot to touch and not worth the risk to their reputations. They'll feel like walking a tight rope, unable to deviate from the path zealous fans have late out for them, forcing them to remake the same product or fall into the abyss. The only writers who will take that gamble are those with nothing to lose, people of dubious quality that are content to make the same thing for as long as the money lasts. Some might even want to inspire the ire of fans in order to burnish their credentials with their twitter followers. Either way, we fans lose.

The difference here is the fact that these franchises are still making 💰 money. People complain yet they still go to the movies. Star Wars is making more money than ever. The other reality that black and white thinking like this doesn’t ever seem to mention is the fact that Hollywood is gathering NEW fans that have a taste for these changes to older well established brands. Why you ask? Because it’s SAFER. Star Wars is going to make money no matter what!!! No that won’t be forever but they don’t need forever to try these new demographic representations just a period of time to see who comes to the films and who doesn’t. Guess what? They are still skilled at giving fanboys what they want! Just look at the Mandolorian!! But guess what? More younger audiences and especially females are watching too because they LOVE baby Yoda!! Why did they give it a shot in the first place? Because of Reylo!!! That’s right the stuff many fanboys hate about the sequel trilogy is what got many young females invested in Star Wars!!! I know this because I have 4 daughters ages 12-24. They didn’t even watch the originals until they caught Reylo fever!!! Disney knows what you don’t know or care to know. Well, the problem is there aren't really any 'great chefs' in Hollywood these days. Great storytellers and creative visionaries are in very short supply nowadays. How many classics get produced each year? Compared to the 70s, for example? Are you telling me that JJ Abrams is a great artist with a million great, original ideas? Nope.
If they won't listen to the longtime fans, let them go broke! What's our part: Stop giving them our $$ in all aspect. That means, don't support one leg of their business while trying to take a stand against another. EX: Don't sign up for Disney Plus and go to their theme parks, but boycott a movie here or a movie there. They will just divert the funds from the successful divisions to prop up and keep pushing their crappy divisions! No, the equation is not 'just that simple.' Yes, it's wrong and silly to blame the audience, but this analysis is still simplistic. Setting aside that the term, 'creatives' is a bit obnoxious, it remains the truth that people who write and paint and compose and choreograph and direct are not machines. It's not just insert dollar and get your perfect fantasy movie. I'm not denying the central importance of money, I'm a capitalistic creative, I like to get paid. I like to please audiences, and have at times. But in order to create X for you, we sometimes have to create Y and Z without regard for the marketplace. I don't know why it's that way, but it is. Further, it's not our job to drive using only the rearview mirrors, it's our job to anticipate, to drive forward, to take chances. The first Star Wars was a creative leap. There was no existing audience. Lucas took a wild shot, and it worked. But it could just as easily not have worked. Had he not risked it we'd have no Star Wars to complain about now. Finally, bear in mind how much the creative world has changed. The sharp line between feature and TV is gone. Defining limitations imposed by network standards, are gone. International barriers are falling. A feature writer today can't just think about the US market, they must think about China, Japan, etc... The market is fragmented by the multiplicity of choices, so each writer, director, show runner either has to narrowcast with a great deal of precision, or cobble together what amounts to a coalition of separate audiences. All this while having to ramp production up from four networks to a thousand. Simple, it is not.
It's called the entertainment industry for a reason. It's suppose to produce products that entertain people. If these filmmakers want to be 'artists' and have full control over their expression, then how about they don't take pre-existing franchises meant for a wide audience. I couldn't care less about original movies. They can shove as much of their agenda into it as they want. The problem comes when they take beloved franchises and use them simply as a vehicle to push an agenda. That is disrespectful to the original source material, the fans of that material, the creators of that material and the basic concept of filmmaking and storytelling. I remember watching a video about why Christian movies tend to be so terrible. The conclusion they came to was that the filmmakers' goal was first and foremost to further their Christian agenda and everything was superfluous. That's happening on a larger scale with woke Hollywood movies. Just replace Jesus and God with lgbt representation, female empowerment and race swapping. I'm an athiest, but I think you probably could make a good movie with a religious message. You just need to go in intending to make a good movie with a good story. Same with the other side.

To be fair, Hollywood has always listened to a self appointed minority of zealots almost from its beginning and it's why they pandered to racism especially in portrayals of African Americans on screen for decades. Indeed Religion also has a hand in censorship as local film boards and leagues often got films banned outright that it was years before they ever were shown often in entire countries if at all. Studios still cater to outside forces and the recent films like Ghostbusters flopped because audience's rarely sit there and care more about an actor's gender than if the characters/movie was interesting. Indeed casting has also been prone to the same forces as few realize that those who might of been wildly popular in franchises like Game of Thrones may not be a good bet elsewhere and so far hasn't gone well.
I'd modify your analogy a little. The restaurant that they're claiming is top quality food that is good for you is in fact deficient in large quantities of vitamins (ideas), and is actually more like a fast food outlet masquerading as a quality establishment. Sometime in the recent past, people starting mistaking actors who could play intelligent and inspirational people, for actual intelligent and inspirational people; and not just the fans - the professional critics and the actors themselves fell into the same trap. I first saw Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius, and later in Shakespeare productions, even live in his one man Christmas Carol production, as well as in STNG. In all, his acting was excellent. But anyone who heard his interview with Whoopi Goldberg around the time of Trump's election could have no doubt that by then he was *rabidly* part of the left wing Hollywood mind set, and his having creative control of ST:Picard meant that ST:Picard could only be garbage. Aside from the endless one-sided preaching from almost all western 'entertainment' of the last several years, one of the worst things is that everything is so predictable. A few minutes into Pacific Rim, many years ago now, two young men climbed into the cockpit of one of the robots. I said to my wife, one of them is about to be seriously injured or killed. When that happened almost immediately afterwards, she asked how I knew. Because one of them has to be female, I said. Shortly thereafter, the female arrived. 'Dramatic tension' is a very old phrase which describes something that should be present in almost any story. The only dramatic tension in most productions now is how the bigoted white men will be hurt, ridiculed and killed, because they deserved it. Please, everyone, stop paying to see this stuff and then complaining about it afterwards. Boycott it until they learn the hard way that they just aren't intelligent, or *correct*, enough to teach us anything.

I remember reading an article on what was described as, "The Liberal Tell" in which the viewer could easily predict who the bad guy was and where the storyline was going to lead because it was based in a liberal bias on the part of the writers and filmmakers. I learned to see the ending coming a mile away for quite a while now.

When films use a recognizable brand name, fans are entitled to the movie that the brand brings with it, not whatever the new creators want the film to be. Just take a look at the Star Wars film whiteboard. That is how you tell someone is out of touch with the audience.
I also think Hollywood is too scared to take on new IPs. There are plenty of great scripts and ideas but won’t see the light of day because the return on investment is not as guaranteed as nostalgia bait.
Totally disagree. I like a lot of your takes but it's up to the artist to make art, not to serve up what the audience wants. They serve what they like. We choose what we want.
That's a dumb comparison that doesn't even pass the smell test. When you go to a restaurant, you don't order "food", and eat and pay for whatever happens to end up on your table. You order a specific dish. The chef makes it. If he does not, you walk out and pay nothing. Even the greatest of great chefs are still subject to demands and whims of the paying patrons.

I disagree with this. It's not the reboots/remakes that are the issue. It's the soulless, cash grabbing reboot/remake that doesn't have any respect for the source material, and that's not even going into the new movies/tv shows that just attach their name onto a previous IP. It's the Thundercats Roars, the new Who, Picard, and so on. There is no reason to make those shows by those IPs if they're going to blatantly ignore everything that made them work, and all it's going to do is piss off the fans of those shows.

Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters I agree- but the american hate for Terminator Dark Fate I don't understand man. It was an awesome chase action movie hunt. I loved the Rev9. Scary and a bad ass actor. And yeah I loved the 3 Chicks in the lead. They had a great chemistry and the augment had also great body language as did the rev9. Everybody seems to be bitching and moaning about the mexico segment. But why can't art and especially scifi reflect our world? SciFi is more than pure escapism. To me Metal Gear Solid is the best thing that was ever written because it reflects on so many things. Why can't Terminator? And I really didn't care about the female cast and the depiction of males in this movie. It was bad ass all the way through and neutral in my opinion. Damn I love Ripley I love Sarah Connor and I love Motoko Kusanagi. And I am a hairy 37 year old metal head otaku and no Unicorn. Dark Fate was by faaaar and wide the best sequel. It wipes the floor with the other post T2 movies completely. I wish midnights edge wouldn't put it on the same level as the Star Wars and Ghostbusters abominations. But to each their own. Anyway USA has gender identity problems that much is clear. And somehow it is a problem in Terminator. Which is totally unclear to me. I mean look how rev9 butchers the border patrol with its tentacles!! This is like Ajin in reality! And even Arnies humor is spot on this time. The impact the T800 and Sarah Connor have on each other- I think there were some masterfully tragic poetic moments there. Hell I'm gonna make my own podcast about it. Redeem Dark Fate!!! The only problem with that movie are weird american gender identity projections by a confused audience with too much internet input and some weird camera choices in the first car chase. As for everything else said about how the franchise heads react regarding all other mentioned franchises I completely agree with midnights edge :) Just the Dark Fate thing I don't get. Actually some of the feminist things in that movie were quiet fitting to me. Completely different Ballgame than Harley Quinn or Batgirl.
When it comes to atleast Star Trek Picard I have noticed fans seems to have forgotten the Prime continuity at times though I'll admit the recent Seven of Nine revelation pisses me off. Your analogy does not work for film auteurs. If you want McDonald's go to McDonalds. If you want fine dining, you go to a fine restaurant. Don't ask a Red Seal Chef to make you McDonalds. Stories are built on surprise. Audiences are welcome to criticize the *quality* of the surprise in a story, but never the direction of it. If you want to know exactly what happens in a story, or think you can dictate the direction of a story, then just read a choose-your-own-adventure novel.

The only thing missing from your analogy is that when the chefs serve us "what's best for us," they are still shoveling bad food onto our plates. Many of us can see the errors. Lack of character development, failure to follow cannon because either they don't care or they never did their research. There are gross errors in the "science," and other issues. In one video on YT, someone pointed out over 1 error in continuity, plot, failure to adhere to canon, etc per minute of the entire episode of Picard!
If Discovery had been made with no ties to Star Trek, I could have watched it, groaned at the errors, but enjoyed it for what it was. Instead, it is being passed off as Star Trek. That it is not!
A very large part of a popular franchise succeeding is to appeal to the long time fans because they are a guaranteed audience and many are vocal about telling people they know about a good show to watch. Instead, when fans point out the errors and what they think needs to be done to remedy the problem, the people involved with the show berate the fans, tell them not to watch it, and double down on their approach.

You've ordered a specific item each time... a steak, in this example.
Every piece of meat (sequel) is a unique piece, but you expect certain things to be very similar.
Then, you walk into the same restaurant (theater) and order the steak... and the new chef (director, producer, writer, etc) sends you a shit sandwich... but CALLS it a "steak"... and tells you that it's really what you wanted AND needed...

For once I disagree with Midnight's Edge. They are presenting the situation much simpler than it really is. Movie makers have a right to take risks and make art. Not just entertainment that fulfills every expected cliche. We as an audience also have a right to judge their art for themselves. And reject their Emperor's New Clothes trick whenever they go: Only wise people can see the depth of our movies.

I believe many filmmakers don't care that they are part of a "business". They believe they are a sanctioned propaganda machine. They do not believe that we are entitled to our personal opinions. My school teachers drove simple ideas into my head way back in the 20th century. I could worship how I choose, I could vote how I choose and I could speak or write about it. These are basic ideas that help me on a daily basis. Therefore I will skip whatever damned movies I please.
Saying “the audience is entitled” makes no sense because the point of movies is to generate revenue. So, by default, movies have to cater to whatever the audience wants. It’s like saying “the audience feels entitled to what they want.”

They used the example of filmmakers being great chefs and audiences asking for a big mac. Well, there's the media's problem. The audience didn't go into a fancy restaurant. They went into a MacDonald's and ordered a Big Mac and then the person behind the counter tried to served them some fancy, fru-fru health food.
Filmmakers can be 'great artists' when they're working on original movies, not long-established franchises with wide audience appeal. That doesn't mean they have to slavishly follow the source material when making new entries. You can wiggle a bit with the story just like Burger King makes variants on the Whopper with a different sauce or some new toppings. But, they still need to retain the soul of the franchise.

Film makers, actors and higher ups in Hollywood are in my mind akin to those self righteous artists who show of their work at art galleries and ask the patrons what they think and when they don;t get what they want to hear, they lash out, calling them closed/small minded, they don;t know art and their their works are too sophisticated for the common man to understand and tell them to piss off. They need to understand that this is a symbiotic relationship. You give the people what they like, they in turn give you their money so you can make more are, if you want to do what you personally like on the side, fine, go for it but do not try to substitute what generates mass appeal with your personally preferred work and expect them to simply lap it up.

if your something 'new' is pretentious or catered to the chef's 'exotic' taste (or lack of), you'd NOT have ANY customers.
Also, if you're doing an adaptation of something, you're not making something new. If you don't like the thing being adapted, don't adapt it and create something new instead that can be judged on its own merits. For the restaurant analogy, you're paying for a steak, so you expect a steak. If you want to create a new menu item, create it and name it something new. Nobody likes it when you make a new vegan dish and call it steak.
I love this analogy, but I think a better one would be this...
Imagine you're at a store and want to buy soda. There's a bottle of Cola there. You snag it, and while walking out through the parking lot you take a swig and it tastes too chemically... you realize you got "diet" cola by mistake. You go back in the store asking for a refund, but the people at the store say;

This is pretty much how I feel about, not just entertainment, but the world in general nowadays. I'm telling people "no, it wasn't always like this, things have changed" and saying "I'd like something similar to what they use to make but no one does it anymore" and I come off looking crazy because people just go by a label or a poster or advertising.
And this is a great analogy for the Overton window. What's considered "right" nowadays would be considered "left" about a decade or so ago. So what's considered "left" nowadays is some super whack job nonsense that wouldn't have been considered or dreamt of 10years back.

It would also be helpful if characters stood up for the fans and audience by saying I will not reprise my role as X if the directors are going to change their character arch or their characters fundamental qualities. Example: Mark Hamill should have walked away when he saw what was happening to Luke Skywalker (I know it was too late when he saw this happening in TLJ), and the cast that grew up watching Star Wars should have dropped their roles immediately.
I have said stuff akin to this so many times. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

That was the 1965 Ford Galaxie LTD, and it was a ringing success and hugely influential on the industry leading to a trend of fancier cars from "low-priced" makes that encroached on "mid-price" brands, and towards luxury rather than performance in full-size sedans. Besides not being called "Edsel", the biggest difference was timing.
My wife had never seen Young Guns so we watched the other night. This movie was never considered great but, compared to what I've seen the past couple of years with very few exceptions this was head and shoulders over the crap coming out of Hollywood. It caught me of guard. It's time for Hollywood to fail and hopefully others will start making movies. I just don't want to see anything being put out by these people.

When it came to Star Trek after TNG, the writers of DS9 wanted to make something truly different from the mystery of the week episodic show they had just wrapped. Fans initially hated it and many preferred VOY, seeing it as a return to form for the franchise.
Though DS9 was divisive, it tested the comfortable notions of the Star Trek universe and still holds up to this day while VOY feels like the franchise running out of gas. In the end, the VOY writers moved on to ENT where the franchise as it had been up to then died, it's viewers decamping for DS9's creative successor, BSG.
They key, as the video makes clear, is having writers intimately familiar with the franchises they are handed. That has to be paired with the ability to evolve the franchise in a natural way rather than repeating itself until it becomes creatively bankrupt. Risks should be taken, even if some fans might initially be put off. Subversion of expectations can be effective if it makes sense and be creatively satisfying.
I worry that the fan reactions to Star Wars, Trek, and Doctor Who will push good writers away. They'll see these franchises as too hot to touch and not worth the risk to their reputations. They'll feel like walking a tight rope, unable to deviate from the path zealous fans have late out for them, forcing them to remake the same product or fall into the abyss. The only writers who will take that gamble are those with nothing to lose, people of dubious quality that are content to make the same thing for as long as the money lasts. Some might even want to inspire the ire of fans in order to burnish their credentials with their twitter followers. Either way, we fans lose.

Why you ask? Because it’s SAFER. Star Wars is going to make money no matter what!!! No, the equation is not 'just that simple.' Yes, it's wrong and silly to blame the audience, but this analysis is still simplistic. Setting aside that the term, 'creatives' is a bit obnoxious, it remains the truth that people who write and paint and compose and choreograph and direct are not machines. It's not just insert dollar and get your perfect fantasy movie. I'm not denying the central importance of money, I'm a capitalistic creative, I like to get paid. I like to please audiences, and have at times. But in order to create X for you, we sometimes have to create Y and Z without regard for the marketplace. I don't know why it's that way, but it is. Finally, bear in mind how much the creative world has changed. The sharp line between feature and TV is gone. Defining limitations imposed by network standards, are gone. International barriers are falling. A feature writer today can't just think about the US market, they must think about China, Japan, etc... The market is fragmented by the multiplicity of choices, so each writer, director, show runner either has to narrowcast with a great deal of precision, or cobble together what amounts to a coalition of separate audiences. All this while having to ramp production up from four networks to a thousand. Simple, it is not.

It's called the entertainment industry for a reason. It's suppose to produce products that entertain people. If these filmmakers want to be 'artists' and have full control over their expression, then how about they don't take pre-existing franchises meant for a wide audience. I couldn't care less about original movies. They can shove as much of their agenda into it as they want. The problem comes when they take beloved franchises and use them simply as a vehicle to push an agenda. That is disrespectful to the original source material, the fans of that material, the creators of that material and the basic concept of filmmaking and storytelling.
I remember watching a video about why Christian movies tend to be so terrible. The conclusion they came to was that the filmmakers' goal was first and foremost to further their Christian agenda and everything was superfluous. That's happening on a larger scale with woke Hollywood movies. Just replace Jesus and God with lgbt representation, female empowerment and race swapping. I'm an athiest, but I think you probably could make a good movie with a religious message. You just need to go in intending to make a good movie with a good story. Same with the other side.

To be fair, Hollywood has always listened to a self appointed minority of zealots almost from its beginning and it's why they pandered to racism especially in portrayals of African Americans on screen for decades. Indeed Religion also has a hand in censorship as local film boards and leagues often got films banned outright that it was years before they ever were shown often in entire countries if at all. Studios still cater to outside forces and the recent films like Ghostbusters flopped because audience's rarely sit there and care more about an actor's gender than if the characters/movie was interesting. Indeed casting has also been prone to the same forces as few realize that those who might of been wildly popular in franchises like Game of Thrones may not be a good bet elsewhere and so far hasn't gone well.
The best one yet is them wanting my money to go see a movie that treats me like shit... who would do that.
I'd modify your analogy a little. The restaurant that they're claiming is top quality food that is good for you is in fact deficient in large quantities of vitamins (ideas), and is actually more like a fast food outlet masquerading as a quality establishment. Sometime in the recent past, people starting mistaking actors who could play intelligent and inspirational people, for actual intelligent and inspirational people; and not just the fans - the professional critics and the actors themselves fell into the same trap. I first saw Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius, and later in Shakespeare productions, even live in his one man Christmas Carol production, as well as in STNG. In all, his acting was excellent. But anyone who heard his interview with Whoopi Goldberg around the time of Trump's election could have no doubt that by then he was *rabidly* part of the left wing Hollywood mind set, and his having creative control of ST:Picard meant that ST:Picard could only be garbage.
Aside from the endless one-sided preaching from almost all western 'entertainment' of the last several years, one of the worst things is that everything is so predictable. A few minutes into Pacific Rim, many years ago now, two young men climbed into the cockpit of one of the robots. I said to my wife, one of them is about to be seriously injured or killed. When that happened almost immediately afterwards, she asked how I knew. Because one of them has to be female, I said. Shortly thereafter, the female arrived. 'Dramatic tension' is a very old phrase which describes something that should be present in almost any story. The only dramatic tension in most productions now is how the bigoted white men will be hurt, ridiculed and killed, because they deserved it. Please, everyone, stop paying to see this stuff and then complaining about it afterwards. Boycott it until they learn the hard way that they just aren't intelligent, or *correct*, enough to teach us anything.

I remember reading an article on what was described as, "The Liberal Tell" in which the viewer could easily predict who the bad guy was and where the storyline was going to lead because it was based in a liberal bias on the part of the writers and filmmakers. I learned to see the ending coming a mile away for quite a while now.

I gave up on the music industry 2 decades ago, If movies go the same way as music did, I will stop buying.
When films use a recognizable brand name, fans are entitled to the movie that the brand brings with it, not whatever the new creators want the film to be. Just take a look at the Star Wars film whiteboard. That is how you tell someone is out of touch with the audience.
I also think Hollywood is too scared to take on new IPs. There are plenty of great scripts and ideas but won’t see the light of day because the return on investment is not as guaranteed as nostalgia bait.

That's a dumb comparison that doesn't even pass the smell test. When you go to a restaurant, you don't order "food", and eat and pay for whatever happens to end up on your table. You order a specific dish. The chef makes it. If he does not, you walk out and pay nothing. Even the greatest of great chefs are still subject to demands and whims of the paying patrons.

It's the soulless, cash grabbing reboot/remake that doesn't have any respect for the source material, and that's not even going into the new movies/tv shows that just attach their name onto a previous IP.
It's the Thundercats Roars, the new Who, Picard, and so on. There is no reason to make those shows by those IPs if they're going to blatantly ignore everything that made them work, and all it's going to do is piss off the fans of those shows.

That is a concept that I would happily go into the movie theater to see. That takes the NoES franchise and makes it into something completely different. But going to a Terminator movie where it's not John Connor, it's someone else, and it's not Skynet, it's a different AI, and it's almost a shot for shot remake of T2? It was an awesome chase action movie hunt. I loved the Rev9. Scary and a bad ass actor. And yeah I loved the 3 Chicks in the lead. They had a great chemistry and the augment had also great body language as did the rev9.

I miss movies like Indiana Jones. The writing and the musical score were perfection! I loathe the marvel series as the stories are wearisome and there is no real musical score - not like John Williams or Howard Shore.
