    100% agree with looking after your neck by having one main monitor directly in front and one on the side for things like reference documents, etc. Too many people only care about aesthetics.

    Wow, what a unique and inspired video. I would be pressed to find just one other video that has any similarities. I mean the standing desk, the panning, the music - I've never seen anything like it. And I love how you were able to find the importance of standing while doing a mission trip to Slovakia.

    Great setup! I love the minimalistic layout and look. Also, I totally agree with the two monitors over a single ultrawide monitor. I can say the same thing, it's much easier to have two monitor with one being in the center facing you. You also get better control of the application windows per monitor and don't have to worry about the 32:9 support for some applications/games.

    I feel the same Thomas about your beginning comment on both the mouse and how two screens are stationed. I love the mx master 3 for the specific reason that it feels like a perfect productivity mouse. I not only work in unreal, but I also draw and animate, and the mouse is perfect for that. Being able to side scroll all my timelines and view ports by default as sped up my work flow. The screens: one stationed in the center and one on the more right is key for me, as I have also found, that I look at mainly one screen but need an additional for files, shader/material work, reference, etc. Very similar.
    Great setup. Glad it's working for you. Keep it up with the quality vids man!

    BTW I love your videos, you really inspired me to start developing my own games and follow my dreams so thank you for being an inspiration in my life I hope you are well and you´re making progress with Twisted Tower. Best of luck with the game can´t wait to see what you brew with it!

    Hey Thomas, some things I can recommend for the neck pains are: 1. Getting one of those memory foam pillows that support your neck when you sleep and 2. Doing chin tucks (this simple exercise realigns your spine so your neck is not constantly strained due to it being curved. Hope this is of use.

    Hi Thomas, I was hoping you could make a video covering your game development workflow. I understand that there's a game design document to create and follow but I was wondering if you could elaborate on how you create one of those. The types of things you think about when creating one. Being a successful indie game developer, it would be awesome to hear about your process as someone who does have success.
    Also, I was wondering if you jump around a lot when creating games. Some days or hours level design (including adding things like foliage and placing assets in an environment) and maybe you jump to making mechanics for your player and enemies and everything else.
    It would be awesome to see how you do things like this.
    Thank you for your time!

    Completely agree about your monitor setup. Ive been doing web development for 10+ years and I’ve tried triple monitors - too much going on - made me too ADD just moving apps around. Tried ultrawide and full screen apps were way too wide and required way too much neck movement. One central monitor allows for focus on one application and a side monitor allows for mild multitasking. Mild is the key word. Focus is on one thing is good IMO

  • @KTKettler
    @KTKettler 11 місяців тому +6

    This is the monitor arrangement I've always preferred! I've never really liked ultrawide and having the gap for two monitors in the center never made sense to me.

    • @boxterduke
      @boxterduke 11 місяців тому

      Same. I upgraded my setup couple weeks ago. New desk, new monitors and I did exactly like in here. I don't like ultra wide only because I play lots of older games and the black bars on the side will drive me crazy. And one monitor in center and one on the right is the proper setup. If putting both monitors in middle then you are turning your head to an angle that will hurt you after a while.
      Awesome setup Thomas

    As a Character Artist, I'm totally with you on this. Spending 8+ hours a day in one place, it's critical to make it comfortable and functional. The money investment is more than worth it. I even had to ditch my Cintiq and go back to an Intuos as hours of sculpting, neck and shoulder pain is real and can cost you too much down time. My next upgrade is an RTX as everything is Raytraced now, GTX just doesn't cut it anymore.

You can hide all Icons on the desktop, even the file bin by right clicking on an empty space on the desktop, going to view and then the option at the bottom should hide every icon. That is if you actually want it this way. Seemed like it because you had no other Icons on your Desktop.

    I think your monitor setup is more important that some beefy computer. Your monitors are your workspace more so than anything else.
    Whether it is a Widescreen, Ultrawidescreen (Samsung G9 is quite popular as 2x 27"s), or dual monitors won't matter it's all personal preference mostly.
    Good thing is there are some really affordable options these days to boot.

    With respect, I don't see how the dual monitor setup alleviates neck pain. The standing desk? Sure. But that low angle turn to that side monitor actually caused my neck pain, so I found the single ultrawide to be a better setup as my neck rarely turns now.

Tried it in hand and hated the ergonomics, I don't know why, it's got a larger bump on top and it didn't feel right. Basically I ended up trying 10 more mice and the one that really got close to that Performance MX feel was the Razer Basilisk x hyperspeed, for me at least.

I think I cried during "The Harsh Truth About Game Development" , if not I had a terrible day that day. Don't get me wrong I am rooting for you, I have all your games and tell people about them, because I want to see you succeed. But it is very hard to see someone my age doing what I have wanted to do all my life for about as long as I have been capable of doing it. You've been doing this for about 10 years, I should have and could have started 10 years ago. But just didn't for some reason.

    Nah man, I have the same Monitor setup. My main monitor is 100% straight in front of me, and my secondary monitor is to the right. I have now moved to an Ultrawide monitor, the Samsung G9, and I have it off center so the left side of the screen is in front of me and I use PIP mode with two display port connections to replicate dual monitors. Then, if I want to game in 120hz I turn PIP off and play. This works for me, it might not fit everyone's needs, I only play racing games in ultra-wide, so I'm fine with the center of the ultra-wide being off center because I can just adjust to it no problem.
