Ok for every person who complains about this song "promoting cigarettes" let me just tell you something right now, this song HELPED me QUIT. Like, the actual message of the song made such a permanent impact on my state of mind, which i'll explain but if you listened to the lyrics you should already be aware, what she's saying is these peoples lives will never amount to what they truly want, and the only way that they can function realizing this is to borrow a temporary calm from a cigarette and delusions of a better future to elude drowning in their sorrow. It made me realize i was just like that and it made me so sad, and i didn't want that to happen to me or let it continue to happen to me so I immediately quit and have never looked back. this song is good, the message is good, if you want to achieve your life goals don't be like these people.
Kacey Musgraves is doing more than Blowing Smoke. What a refreshing talent she is. Her music above all else is honest. She doesn't try and trick you. It's about life and how all the players move. Just being honest I didn't know who Kacey was before the Grammy's...wow I'm in love! stunning beauty & amazing talent! Taylor, Carrie, Miranda & Faith must be shaking in their boots! A New Country Princess has been Tiara'd! and she truly sounds like a country artist! ;)
Girlofpages True, Carrie knocked Faith off the perch, Taylor did the same to Carrie and now Kacey took the Tiara from Taylor...;) who will be next? or will Kacey prove to be too tough to topple?
rodeopac Girlofpages In my opinion, Kacey has a timeless sound to her(Unlike Taylor and Carrie). I'm pretty confident that years from now, when I'm 50 and dancing with my (hopefully) future wife, we'll hear this song playing in some cute but musty dance hall down some old country road :)
Caleb Goforth I like songs from Taylor, Carrie, Faith, and (of course) Kacey. Everyone has their own sound/style and like that but Kacey sounds more "country" to me. :)
She is down to Earth, and I love the in your face lyrics.... anyone who has ever been a waitress in truck stop, like me, knows this all to well. I just love the lyrics, she speaks the truth!!
If you listen and understand the lyrics you will see that the song is about wanting to break the cycle, whether it be smoking, job, relationship etc. and doing what you really want to do in life, not just talking (blowin' smoke) about it. The msg in this song is a good influence on a person of any.
Blowin' smoke is NOT about smoking (insert favorite herb). It's about the lies you tell yourself just to deal with making it through your life without giving up hope or losing your mind. American Idiom: To say things that are not true in order to make yourself or something you are involved in seem better than it is.
+Dustin Hicks Indeed I can't believe there are actually people who think this is literally about smoking. Even I as a foreigner understand she is talking about sth else.

***** What? Are you and the first commentator the same person? Either way, you must be a real idiot if you can't even type "Bill Nye" into a search engine, let alone the search bar on this site.
I am not a fan of country music, but I don't see why there's people who don't like Kacey Musgraves, this girl sings that type of traditional country/alternative country direction, at least this girl sings real country unlike Taylor Swift.
Almost the anthem of the working class. I love the witty lyrics and idioms, as they really paint the picture of no personal progress despite working every day. Some of the "dreams-gone-by" of people whom I work with in these jobs make me feel very sorry for them. We need them there, and I want them to attain their goals nonetheless. Ms. Musgraves has definitely worked in these fields, and is such an excellent communicator of their situation. Smart lady.
An ex-boyfriend of mine introduced me to Kacey's music years ago. Although I am not a big fan of country, I admire the lyrics of the songs. The words are clever, creating images that stay with the listener. Everyone can relate closely to at least one country song.
@Christopher Jude Not all that good, Chris. I just lost a friend and musical colleague of mine, Bobby Hollar, a punk rock and roller. Here's a tune of mine that is doing well internationally: ua-cam.com/video/amrXlywecCA/v-deo.html. Hope you like it. Thanks, Chris! Take care.
Jason Scott she wasn't rich growing up. She was actually just as poor as the rest of us. The difference is she was in the right spot at the right time to get noticed and pulled out of the poor side of society. You should read up on people before you start insulting them.
+Garrett1240 pretty sure she's saying it literally and metaphorically. She is smoking in the video and says "lips wrapped round our cigarettes", "flick an ash into the tray". Seems like she's talking about smoking and "blowing smoke out of your ass" haha 😊 I could be wrong but that's what I gathered from the song.
For you people who detest this video and song for its glorification of smoking, you should really listen to the song and hopefully realize it is a double entendre.
I love Kacey Musgraves & how she takes country music back to it's traditional roots with her style & songs & how she takes it & brings it from her roots in country. I love Kacey Musgraves & all her songs so far.
I'm no waitress but I work a very similar job for minimum wage and no tips. This sums up our break area in one fell swoop. I love it! Of course now everytime I hear the song, i think of work and all the crazy things my coworkers do and say. That's the life.:)
I can say this this song inspired me to move up and move on. It has been almost 4 years since I left my dead end food industry job. I am a disabled veteran with limited earning potential due to my mental disabilities from a head injury in the military. I started my own dog training company. I now train Service Dogs for other disabled veterans. I was not going to be blowin smoke about getting un-suck any more.
This woman's, lyrics, style, and overall not giving a fuck has been absolute inspiration too my writing lately. Straight out of the country compton? Thank you Kacey!
Drew Chandler Wanted to give my comments credence. Thank you again. Blow me Away The transcendental location that helps me escape my space, what takes shape is only at hurried pace/ the memory to turn a new page I engage, with each step and the trail I pave. Looking at my choice or a phrase, tightens the mind around what makes me afraid. What I claim might be a mistake, but what this is I can’t fake it/I cant shake it/the feeling it turns me back to how you want me to behave…. So told a lie and made me believe, in the existence of gravity/it holds me down, when Im looking down on the trees/ you know I was made for above the canopy told that I could fly/ill give anything a try to rest my case on what it is I need to embrace the light we can shine without bowing our knees, is what is now what I see that one day I know you’ll agree The dimension of love and what we can be hate, is in the middle of the ying and the yang. Sent on to the black and the white of what I must change/ / to keep me in my cage is not where I lay, I might just rip out my fangs, there is a light in the distance /I see you out there you can’t lock me away. Here I am ready to play. The lock and the key, was opening me to being more or less clean. My energy within will be the friend to break me free/ so then certainty of what it can make of me I see the change that took place with what I have already faced. The brightness doesn’t fade / it could be an oncoming train or a devil to slain/The path is narrow to escape through the crack shedding the thick skin that hid what I lack/ you can see why I am not coming back. The resonating sounds that turns me around/ trumpets and drums, but now Ive grown numb/ with what I had found, I landed on solid new ground/ I knew what it took, seeing what our footprints left behind and the ground that they shook/The force that makes my mark was just hidden in the dark. Here I am now playing a new shadow game, until seek and you shall find becomes all the same/ When it becomes inane/ I hope it doesn’t bring me back to where I once came. My mind settles in a place that only I have seen what can be made, so from out of the shade. I lay in the bed that I made. Asleep, I hold on now to what I must keep, now I know androids dream of electric sheep. Awake now, but what I did took enough faith in what to embrace/ overcome the fear of giving in to the call, to take a leap and see if I fall/ Up in the sky no need to stay clear. and ill let the wind help me steer until I can leave this atmosphere. Get it its, weed, u guys get it, like i don't think u guys get it, its not cigarette smoke because it makes u relaxed, and like weed makes u relaxed, so u get it?
Bill Nye It is a wonder to read such an idiotic comment like that coming from someone with a user name like Bill Nye.
bubby14
Hahaha!! I was thinkin the same thing.
Youve apparently never heard the term "blowing smoke". If she writes her own lyrics, shes brilliant. The song is the definition of the idiom.
***** What? Are you and the first commentator the same person? Either way, you must be a real idiot if you can't even type "Bill Nye" into a search engine, let alone the search bar on this site.
Keep it up Kacey!! Great song!!
Thanks for your love and support I appreciate ❤ how long have you been a Fan?.
I am not a fan of country music, but I don't see why there's people who don't like Kacey Musgraves, this girl sings that type of traditional country/alternative country direction, at least this girl sings real country unlike Taylor Swift.
that moment when taylor swift has always been pop/country since her 2nd album
Marissa Slattery She has always been more pop than country, like I don't listen to this stuff at all I'm more of a rock/edm person.
thestone30080 you're 100% right lol
Umm probably because she isn't really singing at all. She's talking. Like throughout the entire thing.. I hate it. It isn't country at all.
Kiki Hurtubise Nah I don't really care, I don't listen to country at all, I'm more of a rock and electronic music fanatic.
What a great song to get through the rough times. You don't have to smoke to relate to this song. Great stuff, Kacey!
Smart lady.
I love her facial expressions!
I'm gonna write this one time.....

You make me proud to be a lyricist!!! \\\m///
not particularily a musgraves fan but this song is awesome. reminds me of small town life
Kacey, I swear I gotta see her in person. I’m obsessed! She is so perfect
Take care.
I love this song.
Jason Scott she wasn't rich growing up. She was actually just as poor as the rest of us. The difference is she was in the right spot at the right time to get noticed and pulled out of the poor side of society. You should read up on people before you start insulting them.
This sounds like a 90s song.
sheryl crow'ish
The best way of describing procrastination that I've heard yet.
I love all of Kacey Musgraves songs
As a smoker and almost 6 years of waitressing, I can 100% relate to this song!
Not six years but ya. This.
Kristin Murray its not about smoking. Do you even know what blowing smoke means? lol
+Abdul Khasan no babies for me, thanks
+Garrett1240 pretty sure she's saying it literally and metaphorically. She is smoking in the video and says "lips wrapped round our cigarettes", "flick an ash into the tray". Seems like she's talking about smoking and "blowing smoke out of your ass" haha 😊 I could be wrong but that's what I gathered from the song.
+Garrett1240 duh dude
I love this song! If you don't like it move the hell on!!!!
I like the video also.:)
For you people who detest this video and song for its glorification of smoking, you should really listen to the song and hopefully realize it is a double entendre.
Now that I know she smokes...Damn!!! Shes my new fav artist...
I love Kacey Musgraves & how she takes country music back to it's traditional roots with her style & songs & how she takes it & brings it from her roots in country. I love Kacey Musgraves & all her songs so far.
shes the most beautiful girl i have laid eyes on
Still tryin to find that diner and get some BISCUITS !.....
Steve Sullivan may work it if you FOLLOW YOUR ARROW!
Freedom Maybe it's on the MERRY GO ROUND!
Smoke a little smoke 🙂
I love country music and Kacey is making catchy songs , I'm a fan and I love her so much , you go girl ..you deserve the best :')))
I'm no waitress but I work a very similar job for minimum wage and no tips. This sums up our break area in one fell swoop. I love it! Of course now everytime I hear the song, i think of work and all the crazy things my coworkers do and say. That's the life.:)
She seriously reminds me so much of Olivia Wilde
I'd be eating in that diner every day if she worked there.
Also, I love the way she says smoke right around 1:12 in. So cute.
STILL tryin to find that diner and get some BISCUITS !....
Yes! I would just want to listen to her talk...just keep talking girl!
Steve Sullivan ; )
bwhahaha
Blow me Away
The transcendental location that helps me escape my space,
what takes shape is only at hurried pace/ the memory to turn a new page I
engage, with each step and the trail I pave. Looking at my choice or a phrase,
tightens the mind around what makes me afraid. What I claim might be a mistake,
but what this is I can’t fake it/I cant shake it/the feeling it turns me back
to how you want me to behave….
So told a lie and made me believe, in the existence of
gravity/it holds me down, when Im looking down on the trees/ you know I was
made for above the canopy
told that I could
fly/ill give anything a try
to rest my case on what it is I need to embrace
the light we can
shine without bowing our knees, is what is now what I see that one day I know
you’ll agree
The dimension of love and what we can be hate, is in the
middle of the ying and the yang. Sent on to the black and the white of what I
must change/ / to keep me in my cage is not where I lay, I might just rip out
my fangs, there is a light in the distance /I see you out there you can’t lock
me away. Here I am ready to play. The lock and the key, was opening me to being
more or less clean.
My energy within will
be the friend to break me free/ so then
certainty of what it can make of me
I see the change that took place with what I
have already faced. The brightness
doesn’t fade / it could be an oncoming train or a devil to slain/The
path is narrow to escape through the crack shedding the thick skin that hid
what I lack/ you can see why I am not
coming back.
The resonating sounds
that turns me around/ trumpets and drums, but now Ive grown numb/ with what I
had found, I landed on solid new ground/ I knew what it took, seeing what our
footprints left behind and the ground that they shook/The force that makes my mark
was just hidden in the dark.
Here I am now playing a new shadow game, until seek and you shall
find becomes all the same/ When it becomes inane/ I hope it doesn’t bring me
back to where I once came. My mind settles in a place that only I have seen
what can be made, so from out of the shade. I lay in the bed that I made.
Asleep, I hold on now to what I must keep, now
I know androids dream of electric sheep.
Awake now, but what I did took
enough faith in what to embrace/ overcome the fear of giving in to the call, to
take a leap and see if I fall/ Up in the sky no need to stay clear. and ill let the wind help me steer until I
can leave this atmosphere.

I don't even really like country music but she is so honest and blunt about life and society I cannot stop listening.
As a waitress, this song rings so close to home.
Emily Rendell right.... it hurts when secrets are so secret that nobody knows what happens if accidents occur until it's too late... I'm not that mean person everyone thinks
Jainie..... she needs more attention and I'm worried about her
@@petew4779 What are you waiting for, Tiger?
Who cares if she smokes? She's still absolute smoke 😍😍
Austin Armstrong smoking hot
I wonder if Kacey resisted the urge to stack cups during the shoot?
i dont get it, bc of the cups song? explain
Is it because you read interviews with her and found out that you has an OCD and must always neatly stack kitchenware?
I doubt it was a good guess...
bigwhey maybe she used to work in a restaurant before she became famous?
Another thought is maybe her parents owned a diner while she was growing up. She probably would have to help out after school and on weekends.
a rarity in the country genre - original +clever - nice to see someone finally break the mold
What Great Song on Real Life! Kasey is So Effervescent and Writing Real Human Lyrics!
I'm just smokin' blow.
That was too easy.
I'll see myself out.
theres another part of it youve missed haha :P blowin smoke take first too letters you get b.s or bullshit. every time she says blowin smoke replace it with bullshitting it makes more sense :P shes saying that every thing the girls are saying in the song is just bullshit and it'll never happen... i'll see myself out
HiImJoeShields I didn't say that one because at the time I was thinking "what if HilmJoeShields" wants to?
AnotherPostcard much considerate so thankyou
HiImJoeShields Oh it's nothing. You're welcome to pun away. :)
If you’re not old enough to know that “blowin smoke” is a saying you’re not old enough to listen to the song lol
Michela Walker yup. What’s all this nonsense about “smoking” ? Them crazy folks.
Best part is at 1:10 when she just says 'smoke.'
I really really really really begin to like Kacey Musgraves more and more
Kacey is Genre herself.
