I love the honesty in this song. This is what country music should be. Honest with heart. She is a terrific songwriter.

The song has a great melody, but even more interesting is that it is very honest in its criticism of small town life. It seems to be in fashion, especially recently, for country stars to idealize rural life as somehow morally superior to an urban existence. It is a breathe of fresh air to see such candor about how the cultural expectations of "country folk" can be stifling and oppressive.

Everyone thinks small towns habe this amazinf charm. Some do. Most (actual, small town of maybe a couple, hundred) are on meth, alcoholics. Just shitty life on trash. Hence trailer park trash.
      And cows. Lots if cows.

      that's so sad
Growing up I always thought I couldn't wait to leave my home town
Now that I was forced to leave, I would give anything to settle there again. Some things you just can't get back.
It's a beautiful line in so many ways.

    • @ZeranZeran
      @ZeranZeran Рік тому +1

@Kel Rowland What's wrong with that? I think you're overthinking it..
Also, life is meaningless, ain't it? What's the meaning of life, Kel?
Everyone probably has a different answer. If you ask me, it's to spread happiness to one another. I hope you have a good weekend stranger. I'm glad this song found me tonight. Can't believe I never listened to this girl before.

Nice to hear someone sing about the reality of small town life. Everything now seems to paint this picture perfect country life of beer, lifted trucks, and cut off jeans. When in reality, this is often what really goes on in the smaller, middle and lower class places around. While it's not all doom and gloom in these places, it is still nice to hear someone sing about the more realistic aspects and just real life in general instead of making life just seem like a constant party.

Coming back to this around 9 years after first hearing this. This hits so much harder now with me growing older and feeling like being the only person that left(or escaped) the rural nowheres, while most of the folks I knew seemed to stay and possibly repeat the cycle. Still sounds just as amazing as it did thr first time.

    • @elizabethadkins_
      @elizabethadkins_ Рік тому +3

I actually think of it the opposite. I was so happy to escape that safety net and mundane simple life back then but. I think there's something beautiful about people who are living a really content, peaceful, simple rural life. After living in a hustle urban culture for so long and trying to keep up, it feels like a lot of people have lost their purpose. Idk it's kinda a nostalgic feeling for the simplicity of my childhood and I think fondly on that. Some people are just experiencing as adults too :)

It gained some traction on country radio, I remember hearing it shortly after it was released and that's how I found out about Kacey, fell in love with her after that first listen! And it did receive repeated airplay for a while. But it is a disappointment how it wasn't a smash hit or even a blip on the radar beyond country radio. Kacey deserves huge success. She is an amazing artist.

    • @wanderlingd7047
      @wanderlingd7047 7 років тому +43

no it isn't about being a lesbian it's about a woman in love with a man watching him with his lover who isn't her. She's saying she wants to be more like his partner because that way she would be with the man who she's in love with. The idea being that the singer wishes she would have more of the other woman's qualities so the man would find her more appealing and pick her instead. Its seriously a beautiful heartbreaking song about unrequited heterosexual love.

My parents split up when I was 5, all but about 3 people from my graduating class are married engaged with a kid on the way or more than one already, everyone I know goes to church (almost) every week, I have friends who lived or currently live in trailer parks, and everyone who's even attempted to move away has come back around a year later and are now living the same as everyone else where I live, there are people hooked on drugs and overdosing, and there are ones who get drunk and end up as crosses on the highway - including someone in my class less than a year after graduating. I've watched all this stuff cycling around my whole life and I've always wanted to move away. Always. Then this song comes out and it just validates everything I've always known and it makes me cry because it's so true and even now it hits a chord way deep down in my wanderlust fueled soul that makes it scream to flee.

I actually live in the town she grew up in and graduated from. So many people i've seen graduate have just gone the same path as their parents, the town is so unaccepting to diversity and differences, and has very little "economical" growth. Knowing small towns aren't all cute and fun is really something, but really understanding exactly where her thoughts are going to, the exact town and school, is very interesting.

ephemerity It’s kind of funny but also sad how almost every state has that one small town that is absolutely toxic... but no one really realizes just how bad it is until you’re practically grown. I remember hearing this song when it first came out and immediately thinking about my home town and home situation as a child (especially the bit with Dad being hooked on Mary two doors down 😕). Shoutout to those of us that refused to fall in line and broke the cycle for themselves at least!

People are never satisfied. Always want more. Whether it's money, fame, or even love. People leave a small town hoping to fill a void and find something different. When really It was never the place they lived but the need to always want more. Coming from a small town I know. Not until you get older that you realize people are people no matter where you go. And only God can ever fill that void.

I’m from small town Texas, and moving away from home let me see so many more experiences cultures and things that I never would’ve if I’d stayed. Life’s to precious to be stuck in the same place forever. You owe it to yourself to see the world. Your hometown is great to come back and visit, but it’s not somewhere to stay forever

I respect how she let's the song stand on its own by keeping her appearance in the video very understated with the big sunglasses and hair tied back so that we have no idea how drop-dead gorgeous she really is so all we do is listen to the song which is as it should be.

    This merry go 'round
    このメリーゴーランドは
    Mary, Mary quite contrary
    メリー、メリー、どれも全く違う
We're so bored until we're buried
    私たちはひたすら退屈、死ぬまでずっと
Just like dust, we settle in this town
    まるで埃みたいに、この街に居座るだけ
On this broken merry go 'round
    この壊れた、メリゴーランドの上で
    Merry go 'round
    メリーゴーランドの上で
Jack and Jill went up the hill
    ジャックとジルは丘を登って
Jack burned out on booze and pills
    ジャックは酒と薬を燃やした
And Mary had a little lamb
    メリーは小さな赤ん坊を抱いて
Mary just don't give a damn no more
    それ以上、不満を言わなくなった

it's so common for people to want to settle down in a small town and yes, it might be quiet and calm, but they don't realize that small towns tend to be suburbs (which looking back at history is a product of racism) It offers no open mindedness or diversity.

@Mickey Merzon ok so lets define "small town" as the equivalent of the suburbs. did you not know that the creation of suburbs was literally because of systematic racism? the first suburb, levittown literally barred black people from living there. suburbs have literally been historically BUILT to be racist and segregate white people from marginalized communities. You need diversity in order to fully internalize what systematic racism means. And keep in mind, just because someone is not overtly racist or prejudiced it does not mean that they don't have subliminal, hidden prejudice towards others. You being nice to a person who happens to be black, gay, etc. doesn't automatically mean you're not racist or homophobic.

I like it being quiet. I like how everything is slow. its not all like this song makes it out to be. I live in south florida now in a place with 180k people. No town. Nothing to do. Everyones drunk all the time. Or on drugs. Gangs. Violence. Murders. People are rude. Mean. everythings so fast. Everyones in a hurry for nothing. I could go on and on..... point is.. I'd rather live in a small country town over this bullshit.

This will probably go down as one of the best country songs of all time. Beautifully heartbreaking and so relatable with just genuine, raw lyrics. It's really a complex song if you think about it but she pulls it off with such simplicity which is so hard to do. Everyone can relate to this song in some way. We either know people who are afraid to leave their comfort zones and just get stuck and then they look at us as if we're crazy for leaving. Or we ourselves are stuck in that rut and just content with settling and we can't find a way out. Most country songs just glorify small town life but she speaks to the reality of what it can actually be like and it's not always pretty for some, and you have to really respect her for that. Most definitely among the best songwriters of this generation of any genre. She's what makes me still love country music so much even though the genre has drastically changed. She's just herself and that's something that's so hard to find in artists today. Proves country isn't just all about partying, tailgates, and trucks.

I didn't even know this girl existed until I saw her performance at the grammys. I don't generally like country music (I have nothing against it, it just doesn't tend to appeal to me) but I think I'm in love with her a little bit now

Expectations, pressure and the illusion of life.
This song is like the painting on the wall we all aspire to.
Behind it all there's a mass of paths taken and not taken.
Regrets and fears and worries about the future.
    "It ain't slowin' down"
Whoever helped write this song is right on it.

As true as this song is at least for myself I can say the big city is not all that. There's something special about a small town where people actually care.

That's true. When I was in my hometown though, I felt like I had to play a part to fit in. It's quite freeing to be anonymous and not have to always be "on". I don't think I'd like to live in NYC or anything, but a midsized city is miles better in my opinion.

This was Kacey’s best song. I miss her. There hasn’t been a better country artist since she left country.
