We started this performance with PFC Band members Titi Tsira and Clarence Bekker while on a trip together in Rio de Janeiro. Wherever we traveled we would add more musicians, strings in Serbia, guitar and bass in Chicago, pandeiro in Brazil and the final piece came together with Sara Bareilles' vocal performance at Washington Square Park in NYC. The message of this song is as strong as ever and it's up to us to make the change we want to see. Music can show us the way.

Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band-a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation-a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

Clarence Bekker's voice is so clear and strong! He appears in other Playing For Change videos as well.

Where i have to join us with playing of change
This good musician
As an American Vietnam Veteran the world needs peace. The people need to stand up, sing & say we’ve had enough! I’m 68 years old. I’ve seen a President killed, his brother, Cold War, blockade, duck & cover, riots, A President resigning in disgrace & it goes on. Twin Towers in NYC. I could go on but you know what I’m saying!
Whoever came up with the idea for Playing For Change has to be granted the 'freedom of the world ' as the concept is quite mesmerising in its quality and entertainment .
I write as Russia wages war on Ukraine and we are on the brink of world war three. Tears fill my eyes listening to this beautiful song. War is NOT the answer.
Amen and only the ones that think it is the answer aren’t the ones fighting it!
Russia is defending itself against an American proxy war where the Ukrainian people are being used as cannon fodder for American hegemony...
So true.As Noam Chompsky points out,it only takes a small minority to enact real change. The snowball effect. So never loose hope.
Love, LOve, LOVe, LOVE
Sending big LOVE to y'all from Texas
Good Luck to Us All
Peace
🙌💞
Yet that song is 50 years old and just as relevant today as it was in 71. Rest in peace Marvin.
Kind of sad that it is still so relevant. We should have been more advanced after 50 years.
What's goin' on is that folks like Clarance, Titi, Sara and all the other musicians from around the globe who are helping bring this world together through the only language that we all understand and experience positive emotions from.... music.
Bless you all. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Clarence & Titi singing together is quite special.
it was 1971. I was 23. Civil Rights raging.. As for music, Marvin Gaye was absolutely bringing it with "What's Going On".....Well in fact, he is still bringing it in this extraordinary rendition of his song and message that simply could not be more powerful, important or relevant today. This is just gorgeous!!
I was 15 when it came out...CHILLS then and deeply STIRRING now...
I was thirteen, white, in the Deep South. Changed my life, my friends, my future. A better appreciation of looking towards what was happening instead of what I was being told, fewer but better friends, and a future of still asking what's truly happening vs swallowing sound bites as truth
The guy's voice from the Netherlands and the lady from South Africa's voice are off the chart!! Amazing all the way through...incredible musicians all over the planet!!
Ditto
You guys deserve a Nobel prize for the peace and love you are spreading around the world
Greetings from Egypt
Amen to that!
Baher Tharwat love and peace to you🙏🏼
Im with you on that Brother....
Baher Tharwat I’m with you brother! Peace ✌🏼
I agree 100%
This should get more recognition in mainstream media, so we can bring some love in here today, for all the world in 2022!
These words echo profoundly 50 years later.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched and listened to this video and it never fails to move me. The artistry and musicianship is wonderful. As an avid fan of Marvin Gaye I never thought I’d hear another version of this song he recorded that I’d get so much from. Ironically it was inspired by co-writer Renaldo Benson, one of the Four Tops, who witnessed an act of police brutality in the 70’s, a very relevant subject today, proving some things haven’t change much for black people in the USA in over half a century. Despite the seriousness of what led the composer to write it, it will remain one of my all time favourite pieces of music.
Classic!! Never gets old! Love this version!
Same. My eyes leak every time!
Love this version , I must have listen to it 100 times over the years.
Great comment, and interesting to learn about the way it came together. Let’s keep hoping for massive change everywhere!
Loved your comment almost as much as this cover, thanks for the history. We the sheeples don't really get it- The Revolution WILL be televised (how's that for a pithy reference?).
Sara is off the charts soulful!
Peace Lord .
I grew up with R&B and especially Marvin Gaye. Growing up in the inner city of DC protesting, marching, police violence...but there was the music of Marvin..and others that helped us to persevere. To watch the video of Marvin singing this song you can see and feel the pain. As a Global Citizen, I thank you Playing For Change (PFC) for including the Global vocalist and musicians and showing their communities. This version is joyous!! I have also ordered my PFC T-shirt and love it. Thanks to all involved and I'm sending much love!!!
I love these international jam sessions. I kept wondering, throughout the song, what ol' Marvin would think of this take on his song. I think he'd be pleased.
I think he would be proud
Somewhere, Marvin is smiling & proud 🙂
Marvin wrote this song for this part humanity to sing and play for us
He would had loved, this rendition.
Superb… Marvin Gaye tragically left the world too soon, yet his songs will live forever.
When Clarence and Titi harmonize at :43 “... to bring some lovin’ here today” it’s magic and my soul exhales
Amen
me too
Isn't Clarence just fantastic to listen to...Have just found this singer and love his music.
The musicians are well above board, people coming together from all across the globe singing and playing in harmony with nature and the people of the world, there's no high enough praise for this beautiful event, but I thank all of these musicians for a emotional experience and a ton of happiness I shall not some forget. To you all my deepest respect.
692 people gave this a thumbs down???
THEY HAVE NO
SOULS !!!
Beautifully done.
What talented singers and musicians.
Timeless message.
Too bad the message is still relevant today, due to ongoing conflicts in the world.
Keep hoping & praying that ALL people the world over may know peace.
Indeed. Folk like that are a part of the problem. Playing For Change and their fans are a part of the solution.
Thank you folks. Marvin is looking down in joy of your beautiful performances and sadness that his song is still even more relevant today.
This is just amazing. Not only is it great, but there are almost 20 countries in this video. Big hand for whoever edits these “around the world” videos. Love to know how you do this!
I was a latino kid in NY when this song first came out in 1971. This message still rings true. Thanks for this project.
Marvin is smilin'.
Peace is "goin on"
Thank you for efforts!
Marvin Gay has blessed this beautiful rendition of his classic, "What's Going on." Pure joy!
This is amazing. And I am only discovering this today. Where was I? Thank you to all the wonderful artists for making us dream... and for putting a smile on my face.
Sara makes me cry.😢❤❤❤❤❤ When will this world finally wake up? War is NOT the answer. Ever.
The two lead singers are just so well matched.
They just bring IT.
Oh, how these sentiments resonate today... my heart breaks.
With a heart full of sadness AND gratitude I simply say:
Thank You.
The drum tap at the end is so phenomenal
SO, SO soul satisfying! My bro brought me here on my 70(!!!) th B-day. Loved & grooved to Marvin when he first sang this in 1970, and going on 51 years later, "What's Going On" is EVEN more relevant! Together we can ALL make the change that needs to happen.....
Hey Bro, I knew you would dig this version, yes we do need change in this world today!
Happy 70th Bday....enjoy.
We need this now, my heart is broken,
You are loved ❤️
@@lancelot6011 thank you so much
*It was, I hope
Mine as well. Let's help to heal our hearts by making change. No matter how big or small one person can make a difference. A simple smile at a stranger can be huge. 🤗
This is so perfect right now -- sending love & hope to you...
Marvin Gaye sang baby making music and I’m absolutely certain that he would be looking down and smiling at this stunning rendition of one of his very finest songs.
"Who is here to judge us, just because our hair is long." What a statement! A beautiful song to listen to.
Yep, agreed..
That phrase has gone thro my head since I first heard it thank you
Thundering applause!!! Brother Marvin is smiling down from above in approval.
Awesome I just Love these folks so relaxing and peaceful. We need more of this kind of music in life.
My god those harmonies are spectacular
Good God......what a beautiful version of a legendary song!
What's going on? I tell you what's going on for me. I love this movement. There are so many GREAT things that people are doing around the world that the media is not highlighting! But now we have the way..... thank you for participating in something so MAGICAL!!!!
What a beautiful version of a great, great song. Marvin, you were awesome bro. You are sorely missed.
That was sooo amazing!!!! Thank you to all who participated.
Thank you from Indiana USA
☯️🌎🕊️❤️🌈
Glorious smile of the guy at the very end gets me every time
Absolutely Beautiful!
As good of a cover as I've ever heard and Titi and Clarence's vocals are so in tune with each other that their harmonies are just divine!
If I could sing like Clarence, I'd never shut my mouth! There are only a dozen or so male singers I'd say that about these days!
Being an old fart, I remember when this song came out in 1971 when I turned 18 and the Viet Nam war was still going on and we were all worried sick about being drafted to fight in a war that was so wrong, in so many ways.
To this day I can't hear "What's Going On" without getting teary-eyed at the thought of how many friends I lost because of that war.
I was 10 when this came out, so I did not really understand it at the time, but I now hear it and recalling everything that was going on during my childhood -- the Vietnam War protests, the construction workers attacking the protesters, the riots in most major cities, the nightly news reports of American servicemen killed, etc., etc. and feel just as you do. Marvin's heartfelt plea for unity and understanding will forever stand the test of time as a lyrical masterpiece. Almost as relevant today as it was then. "You know we've got to find a way
to bring some understanding here today."
@@DirectionlessStudent - So true! When I see and hear projects like "Playing for Change", it gives me hope that maybe through music, and the arts, we can get past all of the politicians and religious "leaders? that want to keep all of us apart for their own petty reasons!
They betray all of mankind the world over!
Peace!
I always loved this song but this rendition is over the top. So beautiful! If it doesn't touch your soul you must not have one.
BEAUTIFUL ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL... Mr Gaye is smiling down from HEAVEN on you all. I bow to all of you in gratitude for doing this incredible song with soulful, meaningful and heartfelt spirit... God Bless... Nitram
Thank you all at playing for change for bringing this gift of music to me from all over the world. Peace & Love Linda
So much talent brought together in a message of love wrapped in the universal language of music. What a beautiful thing. Thank you all for your contribution in creating such a powerful message delivered by the voices of angels. ❤️❤️❤️

This give me chills and tears! Today around the world we need this song!
It's just so good to see and hear all these musicians in their surroundings ,
Timeless song that is as relevant now, in 2022, as it was back in '71.
Shall we send the link to the one in Moscow there...? He is a jurist, he should have known better....
First time I saw Sara Bareilles was here on this video. Didn´t know who she was and now I'm a big fan; love her!
I remember her singing "Smile" for the "In Memoriam" segment on the Emmys (I think) the year Robin Williams died. I agree with you. She's wonderful!
My fav is who made you king of anything 😊
I like this from Sara Bareilles ua-cam.com/video/xjE5D9cHiOk/v-deo.html
I stumbled upon this quite by chance, and since I like Sarah, decided to watch the entire video. It’s honestly not my favorite rendition or version of the Marvin Gaye hit, but it still hit home for me. Watching the wide variety of people from all parts of the world, playing various instruments and singing, brought back so many memories and hopes for our world and future generations. I was blessed and extremely fortunate to have been able to travel to every country represented in the video, in addition to many other rather unknown, smaller countries (i.e. Devil’s Island, Reunion Island, towns along the Amazon River, to mention just a few). Seeing in person how the residents live, and what they have to go through in order to get food and survive, etc., is hard to imagine, as are the hardships they’ve faced for years. Listening to the lyrics to this song, while written some time ago, are probably more relevant today than they were back when Marvin G. first played it!
Fantastic rendition! You know its great when the incredibly talented Sara B is holding her own.
I Truly Believe That Music is Universal and it can being us all together we just have to stop hating each other and Don't Comprised because of our petty differences..
Tears flowed, one of my favorite song, Love you all here and around the world
no matter who sings it it always sounds amazing
"What's Going On" Around the world... A Tribute to Marvin and all those who care!! #peacethroughmusic #pfc3

So beautiful and amazing. I'm in tears. Thank you so much. ❤️🙏✌️
you need to come to Shropshire, England and have one of the Open Mic Night artists appear on Song For Change.. or have several on there.. I play bass guitar, guitar, saxophone, bongo's, djembe drums and I sing too.

A splendorous Marvin Gaye`s tribute.
Need a little music in the Middle East right now😢
It is so moving to hear this Marvin Gaye tribute by so many incredible musicians from around the world. I so love this channel! It's so amazing to me that song that is 45 years old and has so much relevance to what is going on right now. Peace, love, and compassion are International and Timeless and may we all connect to it
When I want to escape from this crazy world we live in, this is the music on this channel that I listen to. :-)
Peace be upon you all. :-)
Same here. The news all around the world are so sad.
Greetings from France.
Look at the UA-cam channel called "Daryl's House" - it is also the shit
I bought this album when I was overseas. I had a small stereo with a turn table. We would play this album over, and over. I still have this album, but I bought at a used record store. It was still in it's original cover. I guess it's so old nobody was buying it anymore. Man it sure brought back some great memories of friends past, and present. I really like the way these young people are keeping the music from my generation alive
Every musician here is just so gifted
Pure awesomeness ❤
I play this over and over from time to time when I need to feel loved. This version does something to me that only Marvin could deliver!
I got that Brenda ☮️💖
Such a great collection of performers, all with their own
When people 'forget' their ethnicity and realize they are humans, sharing a passion...Times like these make me glad I am one of those humans. Share the love, people!
Humanity is a beautiful thing to behold...love is awesome.

I've been listening to this cut for 5 years now, and it remains a distinctly exquisite experience
I think Marvin would be proud of this fine version of his timeless masterpiece. Never more appropriate than now. Right on!
How have I missed this after all these years????? This is brilliant.
