I've read your posts on Saturnalia and now I've watched your video "how-to's". Damn, you're good! You are a veritable walking Saturn service center! I didn't own my Saturn when I lived in Mahopac or I would have definitely stopped by with a six pack of your favorite beverage just to say thanks for all your help. My little polymer paneled 4 banger says "Thank you!" also.
I watched your video when I bought my 2002 SL1 5+ years ago. It had poor heat and the thermostat is #1 thing to check/replace. It's usually where the upper radiator hose goes to the block, but I lost my heat today with -30° wind chills in Maine. Thank you so much for your videos. They are fantastic to get an idea of what is involved!
thank you once again...Rich... you really need to start selling your videos so we hav them for a lifetime.. normallu got some classic rock in the backround makes me feel like im at home I just do an instant replay you helped me buy a saturn 97sc2 for 1600 in ca had bad cps used walkthru best car I ever owned 2 years now
Well by the time I drove to the parts store it seemed to have corrected itself. Check engine light was off, car felt normal, and the reader returned no codes. All I had done was disconnect the battery and pop off a couple spark plug cables to make sure I had the right socket.. Changed the plugs and cables anyway, so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the reply! And thanks for all the videos, your channel is the first place I go to.
Thanks, I saw in the Saturnfans forums that everyone recommends a 195 degree thermostat to make your engine run hotter and for better fuel economy. I am thinking of going back to the 188 degree (85 celsius) just to keep the temps lower and relieve some initial pressure on the 18 year old cooling system (radiator) until the thermostat opens up. I was getting plenty of heat with the 85c thermostat and no problems.
Thanks so much for a very interesting and helpful video. I'm a fairly handy "shade-tree" mechanic in my own right. But, WOW(!), it's INCREDIBLY helpful to see the whole process before I tackle it! AND THANK YOU for sharing your superior knowledge and experience with all of us out here in UA-cam Land! Blessings and peace to you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your videos. You are a saint in my opinion. And the quality of your videos and explanations are excellent. This may sound wierd, but I sometimes watch them just for fun. I have learned a lot about my car from your videos. Thanks again.
@GTVAlfaMan The one i used was the correct OEM part for the Saturn. The 195 deg ones you see the people on Saturn Fans use are aftermarket thermostats and will work also.
Thank you for this post 4 real man! I have to do a thermostat on my friends car and had been searchin for information. I was surprised when your video popped up.
Do you have a video on replacing the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor? I have a 2001 SC2 and need to replace both the ECT sensor and thermostat. This video is awesome on how detailed it is by the way.
What is the torque specification for the Engine coolant Drain Plug for 2001 Saturn SL2? I found on saturnfans 26 Ft-lbs, nothing in Haynes book. This is the only film I could find which explains clearly the location of the ECD Plug, thank you very much, now I know exactly where it is. Maybe and on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier it would be easier to find now, since both cars are GM. Thank you again!
I'm working on an 02 LW 200 that needs a stat. I didn't realize they could be different from yours to mine but mine appears to have the gooseneck on the back of the motor up top which connects to the upper radiator hose. The guy picked up the thermostat and it's not like yours so I'm guessing that the one I'm working on goes in on the top rear of the motor, (driver's side, front of the car). BUT, your title clearly says it's an S series and mine is a LW series so I can't blame it on your. And the other thing, I didn't see any other stat replacement vids for that year Saturn.
I hope you have the SC for a very long time.If you live in the rust belt like me rust proof it ever year and it should be ok. Important Update: Jan 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be solely for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.
Hey Rich, I just noticed today that my new fan was not spinning, it was running a little hot in heavy traffic. I just swapped relays with the fog lamps, still nothing, but when I ran the A/C, the fan came on.BTW, I had to run the heater to help keep it cool, and all fuses are good. Do you think I might need to RnR the thermostat? As always, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks again, Stevie.
richpin06a Thanks, I will have to check that, and get back to you. Again today, fan was not on, but came on with the A/C, which must have a slow leak, I charged it, and replaced the cooling fan over the summer, now it's at around 60-70 degrees. I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks again.
Would I be correct in guessing at the 2:44 of the video that you are shooting the video from underneath the engine? I looked at my Saturn SC1 engine and it would be pretty difficult to reach the thermostat from under the hood from the top of the engine.
Hi Rich. I have a 2000 Saturn SL series. The temp gauge only goes up to about 1/4 mark. Isn't it suppose to go up to half way? If so what could be causing it to not? Lately I've been putting anti freeze into it about every 2 wks but it has not been overheating. Thanks in advance!
On 96-02 s-series the temp gauge will read roughly half way between 1/4 and 1/2 when the engine is at normal operating temperature. The most common problem in this area is the engine coolant temp sensor and its connector.
I have same problem on my 1998 Saturn SL1. The temperature gauge only goes to 1/4... Except in the middle of the summer when I'm not on the highway. Then it goes between 1/4 and 1/2 like richpin is saying. If you live in Canada like I do, it is probably pretty much normal. I know what you mean, I would like the car to run slightly higher for fuel efficiency reasons mostly.
Looks like you removed the a/c compressor first. That's the only way you can see the thermostat from above. How do you replace the thermostat without removing the a/c compressor?
You can also get the same kit at CarQuest. Be careful, most auto parts stores sell a 180F thermostat, which will not pass SMOG testing. You need the 195F thermostat. They'll tell you that 180F is OEM buts its not.
hi richpin! do u know where the thermastat on a vw golf MK4 is? it is a 1.4 petral engine. i heard it is at side of the engine just above the gearbox, where the radiator hoses connect to the engine but dont know if it is the the upper one or lowe one. can u help plize
I bought a 2002 Saturn sl1 on the 3rd and ever since I've had it the thermostat never reads in the middle, it always reads cold even on traveling far distances. The heater still blows hot, though. Do you think there's a problem with my stat?
actually I realize now it is not alternator but an AC compressor that is in the way, and it has too many things on it to disconnect. What I got was PB bolt loosener and I bought a 3/8" breaker bar, which might work better than a ratchet. the sc1 seems tighter and harder to work on than the regular saturn S. Well see what happens, I think the right tools I have now will help. thanks.
@richpin06a Hey rich i have other question. My rad hoses needs to be change because they getting fat BUT i change them before like a year and some change ago. is there a reson for this? Does these hoses last for only 1 1/2 years before they need changing? Should I replace thermastat?
I have a 1995 saturn sc1 coupe, the problem I am having is that on my car the alternator sits right above the water inlet. any suggestions? looks like I have to take off the entire alternator. I can sort of reach it around the alternator to get to water inle, but I have a problem getting one of the bolts off the water inlet because it is hard to get any torque on my wratchet and it is easy to slip off. Please give me any advice,
oh ok cool. I was just worried that my engine was "running cold". I read that a fail safe thermostat breaks in the open position, letting the max amount of coolant through.... if this was happening on my vehicle i guess the engine would be alot colder, though. I was afraid my engine was running colder than it should be and therefore having more wear. I'm glad i don't have to change the thermostat. I was wondering, though, does the s-series have a "fail safe" thermostat?
@richpin06a ok second question i want to replace it today but i see there are two different types as in theres one with temp level 180, and another more expensive one with temp of 192 at autozone. my car has 190,000miles so do i need to get the more expensive one? or the 180 will do long as i keep enough coolant in it.?, and does the 180/192 temp means thats the max heat it can withstand? IDK THANKS =D.
Could a stuck open thermostat cause the in-gear roll to be faster than usual? My 99 SL2 (222k miles) suddenly started idling rough, then about ten min later the hiccuping stopped but the check engine light came on and now the car moves faster than normal when you don't touch the pedals. And, the temperature gauge barely moves, which made me think open thermostat. So, I'm wondering if the thermostat is stuck open, could the engine working harder cause it to roll faster? Or maybe a trans problem
i have a 1999 saturn sc2 and i have been trying to get the temp gauge to read in the middle for some time now, i have replaced the ects and the connector the thermostat and the radiator fluid any ideas on why im still not at the right temp, it does stay in the middle when im parked ??? i cant figure it out
hi ichpin i was speakin to u last night about my 00 golf 1.4 i removed the old thermastat and i put the new thermastat in some boiling warter to make sure it is ok. it opened but did not close and stuck open the same as old one. so can u pliz help why is that so?
Would a lower temperature thermostat (185 degree) open sooner, let your engine run cooler and reduce initial back pressure to your hoses and radiator until it opens up? I am not sure I want to use a 195 degree thermostat due to the increase in pressure to the hoses, radiator and water pump until it opens.
@richpin06a I forgot the brand but i remember buying them from advan auto prts. this time im running with duralast from autozone. always something to be done. THANKS MAN.
When you take the hosing off the block it would continue to dump coolant out. Remember that this entire system is filled with 100% water/coolant, there is no air in the system when full.
Hey Rich, I changed the thermostat on my 2002 SL series but now if I pour coolant in the reservoir it leaks through the bolt that drains the coolant I don't know what I did wrong any suggestions
The actual part number on your receipt is 3179, and it appears to be an Autozone 192 degree thermostat instead of the the correct 195 degree thermostat for a Saturn SL2 that you should have installed according to the Saturn Fans owners forums. Is there a reason you installed a 192 degree instead of a 195 degree thermostat?
I flushed out system then filled up with water to run car turn on heater etc to continue flush. When i did this it appeared smoke was coming from the o2 sensor. This happened about 2 weeks ago and my scan tool showed po133 bank 1 sensor 1 so i replaced o2 sensor and is still smoking from what it that?
I have a 94 sc2 and the coolant projects out of the reservoir cap when the car runs 15 to 20 minutes.... my dad said the thermostat may need to be changed what do you think? If I drive it 15 to 20 minutes it'll start to boil up and spew out from the cap
richpin06a have not chckd sensor yet... but the fan kicks on once the temp gage reads 3/4 and then falls back down. I'll have him check the sensor and come back with an update. Thank u for your quick response!
richpin06a Yea, we went ahead and changed it out anyway. But I think I found the culprit. I researched it more and found a forum with someone with the exact same problem as I and it was his water pump that needed to change. I'm pretty sure this is what I need now. Thank you for your advise though!
richpin06a Hey just wanted to give you an update on my saturn Rich... It actually was the temp sensor connector that was faulty and causing the fan to not cool the radiator. We changed the connector and my car doesn't eject coolant or over heat anymore! Thanks for your advice!!!! :)
why is my car overheating? ... the fan doesnt want to turn on and i thought it was just old but i switch it for a new one and its still not working could it be because of this or a bad connection?
It doesn't read all the way cold, it reads in between the first and middle mark and it does move all the way cold in the morning. How can I troubleshoot the problem? Is it worth messing with?
Ok it's coming back as P0172 and P0172 pd, 'system too rich bank 1'. Just checked my records and woops, looks like I'm due for new spark plugs, so that seems like a good first thing to try. If you have any other ideas that would be great, but I'll do that and let you know what happens.
maybe there is no any in ur country but there are a lot here in ireland. im 100% sure it is 1.4. the manual says 1390 cc but people aways say 1.4 so its a 00 MK4 1.4 petral engine
Hello ,, I have a 2007 Saturn Ion 2.2 and it needs a thermostat and with All do respect , your video did not help me out. Man I thought it would be easy if I followed you.. HELP IS NEEDED !!!
Lol, the "go to the Saturn dealer and get the OEM thermostat" part dates the video. Saturn dealership went bye bye here some years back. All aftermarket now.
richpin06a The Delco 21006335 offered by the gm dealer is a reboxed stant and was identical to my original 2002's stat. Whether or not they had different manufacturers in the past I have no idea. Given the tendency of GM/Delco to bid for the cheapest acceptable manufacturing every couple years I wouldn't be surprised.
Hillbilly, I drive a 2008 Pontiac and GM still have "Certified Pontiac Repair" shops and the same can be said about Saturns. Just because Saturn and Pontiac are no longer selling vehicles does not mean that GM dealerships have stopped servcing these vehicles. Most GM dealerships still service and provide OEM parts for Saturn and Pontiac...Just so you know!
I've read your posts on Saturnalia and now I've watched your video "how-to's". Damn, you're good! You are a veritable walking Saturn service center! Never mind. I checked out your page and found the video, thanks a ton man for doing these and putting them on youtube, huge help for me.
Really appreciate it. Done a handful of thermostats in my lifetime and never dealt with the removal tool. Thanks for clarifying!
Well by the time I drove to the parts store it seemed to have corrected itself. Check engine light was off, car felt normal, and the reader returned no codes. All I had done was disconnect the battery and pop off a couple spark plug cables to make sure I had the right socket..

Awesome walkthrough. Easy enough to replace the thermostat to cure my wife's SC2. No heat in the dead of winter, now that thing gets TOASTY!!
Yes you can and it is what i did in this video to get a clear shot of the thermostat.
@GTVAlfaMan The one i used was the correct OEM part for the Saturn. The 195 deg ones you see the people on Saturn Fans use are aftermarket thermostats and will work also.

@Bennie518 possible blockage in the heater core, have you check the hoses to the core to see i f they are hot or cold.
The A/C compressor is above the housing but the thermostat can be changed with out removing it.
@Tressah Normal temp range on a 99 is half way between 1/4 and 1/2
@omarG19100 I personalty would go with the 192 which by the way is what the OEM is.Temp spec is when the unit opens.
I use the 85 C and i am happy with it.
@jrankhorn Yes i do it is called "Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Remove and Replace updated "
@walkingfreak Yes one 10mm head bolt about 4 inches under were the thermostat goes
What is the torque specification for the Engine coolant Drain Plug for 2001 Saturn SL2? I found on saturnfans 26 Ft-lbs, nothing in Haynes book. That was very good. Explained very well . Thank you
You do not have to remove the A/C compressor which is over the radiator hose to replace the thermostat.
The best way to proceed from here would be to retrieve the codes in the computer then we can make a better determination what the problem might be.
I'm working on an 02 LW 200 that needs a stat. The stock thermostat in the s-series is 85 C which comes out to 185 F
Hey Rich, I just noticed today that my new fan was not spinning, it was running a little hot in heavy traffic. Is the computer receiving the correct temperature to turn on the cooling fan.
richpin06a Thanks, I will have to check that, and get back to you. Again today, fan was not on, but came on with the A/C, which must have a slow leak, I charged it, and replaced the cooling fan over the summer, now it's at around 60-70 degrees. I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks again.
@omarG19100 It is a shame we can't go down to the Saturn dealer anymore because they sold sweet German thermostats for the s-series.
@magmas26 The coolant will just drain when you remove the thermostat housing.
Thats one clean engine compartment!
No,you are looking from the top with the A/C compressor removed.
No wonder why i couldent find it.Very helpful ty.
I have not.How does it look.
The engine coolant temp sensor is the part that tells the computer when to turn on the fan.
Would I be correct in guessing at the 2:44 of the video that you are shooting the video from underneath the engine?
I looked at my Saturn SC1 engine and it would be pretty difficult to reach the thermostat from under the hood from the top of the engine.
Could be,next time check the top and bottom hoses. When the engine is up to temp they both should be hot.
3/8 on the temp gauge is the right zone for a up to temperature 95 to 02 Saturn.
The most common problem in this area is the engine coolant temp sensor and its connector.
richpin06a Thanks a lot Rich. I appreciate the fast response. I replaced the temp sensor but not the car is overheating. Any suggestions?
I have same problem on my 1998 Saturn SL1. The temperature gauge only goes to 1/4... Except in the middle of the summer when I'm not on the highway. Then it goes between 1/4 and 1/2 like richpin is saying. If you live in Canada like I do, it is probably pretty much normal. I know what you mean, I would like the car to run slightly higher for fuel efficiency reasons mostly.
Try a different brand hose this time as a lot of aftermarket parts are not that great.
@rahern53 You can try your local GM dealer or as i write this they can be bought from GetSaturnParts.
Were is the smoke coming from and is the p0133 back.
Looks like you removed the a/c compressor first. That's the only way you can see the thermostat from above. How do you replace the thermostat without removing the a/c compressor?
You can remove the thermostat with the compressor in place.
richpin06a how? from underneath?
@Ninjawarrior315 The needle should be half way between 1/4 and 1/2
@omarG19100 Nope the rubber o-rings seals nicely.
You can also get the same kit at CarQuest. Be careful, most auto parts stores sell a 180F thermostat, which will not pass SMOG testing. You need the 195F thermostat. They'll tell you that 180F is OEM buts its not.
Hopefully you are drinking when you watch them for fun....lol
hi richpin!
do u know where the thermastat on a vw golf MK4 is? it is a 1.4 petral engine.
i heard it is at side of the engine just above the gearbox, where the radiator hoses connect to the engine but dont know if it is the the upper one or lowe one. can u help plize

is there a bleeder valve somewhere to get the air out of the system as you refill with coolant??
oh ok cool. I was just worried that my engine was "running cold". I have never seen a 1.4 do you mean a 1.9
hi ichpin
i was speakin to u last night about my 00 golf 1.4 i removed the old thermastat and i put the new thermastat in some boiling warter to make sure it is ok. it opened but did not close and stuck open the same as old one. so can u pliz help why is that so?
@UnderTheLegalLimit Yes it is the same
@richpin06a Do u need to put liquid gasket on the new thermstat before puttin it on?
rich can i move ac compressor out of the way by just unbolting from bracket but leave hose attached?
Is this video a four cyclinder or v-6? It looks like nothing close to same on my v-6 2005 Saturn Relay?
It is a 1.9L four.
@dedski7 Depends what year you have.
The s-series did not come with a fail safe thermostat.
No not on the saturn.Fill slow and you should not have a problem
Hey Rich, I changed the thermostat on my 2002 SL series but now if I pour coolant in the reservoir it leaks through the bolt that drains the coolant I don't know what I did wrong any suggestions
Melazatotal13 There is a sealing washer on the block drain bolt, i would double check to see if it is there.
richpin06a yes it has the sealing washer
The actual part number on your receipt is 3179, and it appears to be an Autozone 192 degree thermostat instead of the the correct 195 degree thermostat for a Saturn SL2 that you should have installed according to the Saturn Fans owners forums. Is there a reason you installed a 192 degree instead of a 195 degree thermostat?
@chevyhighrider Yes and the maid was off for two days.
I'm sorry i was thinking you were in the USA
Can you do a video on how to replace the thermostat in a 2000-2004 Saturn l series 3.0 V6?
+Ryan Hatfield I will look into it.
Has the coolant temp sensor (two wire) and its connector been checked and is the fan working.
richpin06a have not chckd sensor yet... but the fan kicks on once the temp gage reads 3/4 and then falls back down. I'll have him check the sensor and come back with an update. Thank u for your quick response!
BriDayAlldAy
Sounds like the sensor is getting data to the computer correctly.

Yea, we went ahead and changed it out anyway.
why is my car overheating? ... the fan doesnt want to turn on and i thought it was just old but i switch it for a new one and its still not working could it be because of this or a bad connection?
now I found where it was but forgot to remember in what direction it goes bach can you help pliz. its a vw golf mk4 1.4
If you have any other ideas that would be great, but I'll do that and let you know what happens.
the manual also says 55KW (75bhp) peroal engine and on the engine cover it says 1.4 16 valves.
Yyyyyyyeeeeeaaahhhh. This video shows you the EASY part. What he DOESN'T show you is, he already removed the A/C Compressor. THAT'S the HARD part.
I bet life is good now.
the 02 sensor wasn't the issue, it was probably a condition causing the 02 sensor to throw a code.
Just did one check it out.

now that saturn dealers no longer exist , how do you get the thermostat out without the cardboard tool ?

Hello ,, I have a 2007 Saturn Ion 2.2 and it needs a thermostat and with All do respect , your video did not help me out. Man I thought it would be easy if I followed you.. HELP IS NEEDED !!!
@omarG19100 If you win the lotto please send me just enough to pay my 79 year old father's mortgage we are hanging on by the skin of our teeth.
wat happs if we dont drain it?
Lol, the "go to the Saturn dealer and get the OEM thermostat" part dates the video. Saturn dealership went bye bye here some years back. All aftermarket now.
Auto companies are required to produce replacement parts for 15 years or something like that.
Just for everyone's info the OE thermostat was made by Stant, it's still being made as part # 14279. Advance Auto generally stocks it.

The OEM ones were made in Germany did not know Stant had them made there.

The Delco 21006335 offered by the gm dealer is a reboxed stant and was identical to my original 2002's stat.
Most GM dealerships still service and provide OEM parts for Saturn and Pontiac...Just so you know!
my 1997 Saturn is bubbling back up into the res avoir and no water c oming into the tank on the back just steam
