C'mon.. This is an Australian cinema CLASSIC!!! Granted, it's not the best film we ever made, but it's a guilty pleasure for many people I know. I saw it as a kid when it came out..
Nathan C Oh man! I WISH I saw this movie in my childhood! It would've been my faaaavvvooorite.
It tied with Xanadu as my favorite film as a young child.
...No, I'm not joking.
Nathan C What the hell were they smoking when the studio green lite this schlock?!?!
Jillbles OMG XANADU IS SO GREAT!
The subtle innuendo that is scattered throughout this movie, the exaggeration and fun is what makes this a classic movie of the 80s original spoof movies. It is a classic
So, historically, there is the big Broadway hit of "Pirates of Penzance" with Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt, and they announce plans to shoot a movie version. "Pirate Movie" is rushed into production and released to get there first. But that is not the end of "Pirates of Penzance" trouble. The producers decide to release it simultaneously to theatres and to the new phenomenon of premium pay cable stations, thus incensing theatre owners who then refuse to play the movie.
All this is a shame, since the Pirates of Penzance movie is really good, with not only terrific performances, but these really beautiful and highly artificial sets. And Angela Lansbury practically steals the movie.
All the weird 80s pop-culture references make sense when you remember 80% of the movie is Mable's crazy half drowned coma dream.
My high school did Pirates of Penzance and I found out that my mother had this movie on DVD and she told me this was her favorite movie when she was a kid. I spent the whole time laughing my ass off this movie is so funny that you have to see it. PS I was an police officer and it was one of my favorite shows I've ever done in theatre.
Danielle Garcia Isn't it a fun show? :) I was in it about two years ago at my community theater--I doubled as one of the Major General's daughters and a policeman (complete with corny fake mustache). I can't think of a show I've enjoyed myself more in.
I have to admit this is one of my guilty pleasures. This played a lot on HBO in the mid 80s and I watched waaay too many times. I can still sing along with some of the songs - the original G&S tunes as well as the new ones for the movie. "Give me a happy ending - every time!"
The good news is that it was shot here in Melbourne so you can come and recreate every scene in the same place. Even the same ship from the beginning of the film is still here.
So, this movie, as terrible as it is, is an all-time favorite films. We rented the VHS from the first-ever Blockbuster Video in our area, & I rented it so many times my parents dubbed it illegally. I own the record on vinyl, & my sister-in-law bought me the DVD a couple of years ago. It's awful, but it's so much fun. They don't so much break the 4th wall as destroy it utterly. And all those pop culture references! LOL!Thanks for sharing this. It was a pleasure watching it with you. BTW - even as a kid, I hated, "Pumpin' & Blowin," because it is the absolute worst thing I have ever seen in a musical then or now.
All-time favorite FILM, dammit.
I loved it too. It was always airing on basic cable on Saturday afternoon and was just so fun to watch.
Jillbles honestly Pumpin & Blowin is not that bad of a song it’s a song that is catchy it won’t leave your head
Yes to all of this! Lol! I still have the double LP soundtrack!❤️
I ams shocked - shocked, I tell you - that a self-professed musical theatre nerd would have NEVER HEARD OF PIRATES OF PENZANCE??? The Kevin Kline/Linda Rondstat production at Shakespeare in the Park is one of that series' most brilliant efforts.
Nor did you mention, when she was pairing everyone off at the end, she threw two of the seriously humpy pirates together - and their coupledom is in the final dance.
I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN YOU RIGHT NOW.....
:-)
"This is a weird choice." Seems to sum up most of this movie. Pirates of Penzance where you at???
One of my favorite films ever... its 2018 and I still watching it since the early 80s. I have it on VHS, Laserdisc and now DVD. I haven't seen a Blu-Ray yet though
I'm watching this at midnight right now and I can't stop laughing.
A well bred lady never went anywhere without her parasol in the Victorian era
“This is 15 minutes of my life I’m never gonna get back... AND Frederic’s wearing a shirt! This is the WORST!”
I think you accidentally described how I feel every day of my life
"Fredrick's wearing a shirt. This is the worst!"
One of the most cheesetastic movies ever made; saw it in the theater when it first came out in 1982 and it became an instant classic.
I love this movie, its the most warm dumpster fire i've ever been witness to...... also 100% 80's cheese pumps out of every scene.
THIS is a Gilbert and Sullivan, I'm SURE!! ROFL!
Actually, I believe it was Daniel Radcliffe who made riding a horse sexy...
"Sexy, twink-y lion." Awesome.
My favorite movie! It was always on cable and I would watch it so much drove my Mom crazy! Now I watch with my kids they love it!
My favorite movie of all time! Reminds me of a great childhood with no worries. To this day i have a framed movie poster on my wall!
I love this movie! I think it's hilarious, romantic, has awesome music...but sadly I'm always so different from everyone else. I also love to lounge on the couch in my pajamas all day and watch Spongebob while eating candy, ice cream, pizza, whatever.
I'm two years late, but this is the greatest video on the internet.
I like the singing by kristy and the Star Wars reference and I just love it and laughed at everything
love shell fine, however Flying High! Is a way better, funnier film.
You know it's REAL love when he gives you a shell!
I love that you watched this. It's like you're exploring my earliest nearly forgotten childhood memories movie by movie, video by video. And until now, I wasn't even aware of the connection to Pirates of Penzance!!!
Nice haircut by the way. :-)
You're adorable. Your reaction to the animated fish was so funny!
Oh this musical... I first watched this in spanish as a kid in Mexico and honestly until the pandemic I could have sworn I imagined this movie. It's so ridiculous and I love it!!!
I love this musical and I can't explain why.
Dang, it was like Mel Brooks decided to modernize Pirates of Penzance. I'm super surprised that you don't have a strong G&S background, though. Have you never watched the Kevin Kline PP movie? It's such a treasure.
Tahlia Merrill Kirk I think Mel Brooks could have made this more entertaining. This was just painful.
If it's not on Reddit, it never existed , acc to Millennials.
Thalia, nearly anything Mel Brooks did was better than this crap film.
I tried watching the Kevin Kline PP movie and found it to be so aweful that I couldn’t finish it. Linda Rondstat is fantastic, but other than that it was horrible.
HO, man. I saw this for the first time when I was 7 y/o. It totally ruined me romantically. Classic. Super great 80s soundtrack, super great/super cheese comedy. Plus, hot Chris Atkins. Seen this hundreds of times, I'm sure. Still watch it.
I like to add to this I know a Girl In Sydney who was a BIG Chris Atkins fan and she disabled because of an accident and He mom made a call to a TV station when he visited Australia and he came to see her. I though that was so cool. The girl got hate mail and calls from other fans who were jealous as the story was printed in the media. he might not be the best actor yet he kind to fans I was told which is more than I can say for others. She loved this movie because of him and it was filmed Down Under. Its so awful its good.......most of the Aussie actors were well known from many series there. Agree with you on this.
When I was a kid we had a tape player that you could record on and I made my own soundtrack for this movie by holding the tape player to the TV when it came out on HBO!!! I wore that tape out. As an adult I do own the movie.
This is the first of your videos that I have watched. Honestly, it WA one of my favorite movies growing up - it didn't have to make sense, it was just a fun dream sequence movie with a whole lot of - at the time - current movie references. If you take it as the silly fun musical that it was made to be, then you will enjoy it. This was also made during the Mel Brooks era, when all of his spoofs were coming out. So if you take into account that this movie was being the same silly random type of movie, you might enjoy it. I have to say your reaction was hilarious, especially with the number of times I have seen the movie. One piece you missed - the point when she says that all of her sisters have to get married before she can because of the custom. That explains the mass wedding at the end :)
Saw this as a kid and we all knew it was a romantic musical comedy spoof. Once you understand it SPOOFS 'The Pirates of Penzance' just like Mel Brooks spoofs other movies. This one had several spoofs, from Raider's of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, The Pink Panther, Classic Keystone Cops, and all peppered with a perfect blend of Pure 80's! This movie was loved and enjoyed by everyone I knew, because we understood what it was....a Fun, light-hearted, musical comedy.
i Love this movie, i love it hahaha
This was absolutely my favorite movie when I was 13 or 14. LLLOOOOOVVVEEDD IT. Thanks for bringing back the glorious memories. You're right. It is awful and everyone should watch it.
In third grade my class went on a field trip to see pirates of penzance and my teacher and half of my class fell asleep 😂
Okay, at 13:48 no, that is not, was not ever "Inspector Gadget"... you're letting your age (or youth) show here... this movie came out in 1982, and anyone watching it in 1982 (as I did) would have immediately said "why is Inspector Clouseau in this?" (from the Pink Panther films). The parody was of Inspector Clouseau, not Inspector Gadget... in 1982, Inspector Gadget didn't even exist (not for another year). Great review... but the Clouseau reference is lost on anyone under 40 it would seem.
I can honestly say that
1) I am under 30
2) I have seen every single Inspector Clouseau movie ("does your duggy baaaaahte?"), and
3) I have never seen a single episode of "Inspector Gadget." Not a one.
I get the reference!
I'm so glad this exists, I need to find a place to watch it all because I need this in my life.
The French inspector was a spoof of inspector Chouteau from the movie, The Pink Panther.
Before I watch this video I want to say that Pumpin and Blowin is one of my favorite songs from childhood. Strange right? I hope you mention it because I think it's the best song in the whole film. Okay... On with the video!
Great video! Loved it!
OMG, really?! Always hated it! Takes all kinds. ;-)
I loved Pumpin and Blowin as a child, of course I didn’t get the sexual innuendo back then. Rewatching the movie as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed getting all the jokes I previously missed.
How can I live without her is a fantastic song
omg I remember this movie, yes I am that old. I loved it ook back then. Probably cause of Chistopher Atkins shirtless a lot. lol
It is a bad movie, but as long as you don't take it too seriously and understand its a spoof musical essentially its very enjoyable. Its kind of making fun of itself through the movie. Loved it as a kid, watched it all the time. The pop culture and movie references are funny, especially if at the end you see it was a dream so it being weird with the references, the animation, makes sense then. I agree, definietly watch it, just go in to it just to enjoy it, not see a great movie. I imagine it could be super great on weed lol
cheapseats12 if you want to see a real good spoof film, watch Flying High!.
great vid man. part of this movies charm comes from having grown up with it. I'm 40 and this was one of my favorite movies as a kid. this and watership down.
Do not be dissing a naked Chris Atkins. It's not his fault bad management couldn't source better roles after Blue Lagoon.
My wife almost missed the bus for work beause she lingered to watch this over my shoulder. I had to promise her we'd track down a copy of the film to get her to leave.
This is one of the greatest movies ever made. @9:12, "It's like post-orgy pirate ship." That made me laugh good.
Pirates of Penzance meets Xanadu. I loved this movie growing up. Still do.
Thanks to this video, my brother and I are going to watch the full movie this weekend
Gurl... Your commentary is hilarious. I can't believe I just found this. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid.
Mary Poppins cosplay convention LOL
OMG I forgot about this movie. My favorite part is the bathing parasols vs. the dancing parasols!
Loved the movie back then and now still have dvd.
It’s a classic and Christine McNichols was hot .
It’s a great B movie and can see it a million times.
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid!
I am new to your channel. Have you done Pirates of Penzance with Kevin Kline? They were on the same vhs cassette at my house (with 1776). I can't think of one without the other.
I'm in favor of you growing your hair out and getting a perm!!!
This is my new favorite thing.
I can still sing all the songs! I was 11 in 1982 and purchased the soundtrack, it was allot of $.
I just wanted to tell you that I found this Hilarious! I laughed thru your whole video. As a kid i was obsessed with this movie, my dad had video taped it off of HBO I think and we almost wore out the tape! I can totally see where now someone watching it would be confused or just hate it all together but to this day its one of my favorits.
This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine
as someone who’s about to be in pirates of penzance, i felt that this was required viewing.
Every time you said that you didn't know what was going on or that it didn't make sense, I kept thinking that it was all a dream. That is the catch all excuse for all of its implausability.
It’s parody, it’s absolute GENIUS!!! It’s the best ever wdymm
Make a drinking game. Every time he (or anyone who you watch it with) says "what is going on?" Take a shot
When my school did Pirates of Penzance our director made gravestones for Gilbert and Sullivan. (Probably rolling over) (Fell overboard on the poop deck)
You're correct. What in the absolute (insert foul word here) is this movie? I love it. I was the right age at the right time and it's still one of my favorites. I enjoyed watching with you.
Also, Reprise doesn't rhyme with surprise, it rhymes with appease!
I've actually been called out on this before! I've been saying it wrong for years and it's really force of habit now. I do take solace in the fact that there does seem to be some pronunciation ambiguity:
www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2008/05/ri-preez-or-ri-prize.html
Vitor Lee Whaaaaaaaaaat? O.o I always say it so it rhymes with suprise... Perhaps it's an Auzzie thing?
+Lamp Troll No, I just discovered this the other day. It's pronounced like febreeze. I even looked it up. It blew my mind
I love this movie!
If you're a pirate, always have the better magic tricks....and a lightsaber
I like this. I think I could watch more videos of films I have errantly seen saying "What is this movie? What is going on?" Cheers
PS you HAVE to watch the Pirates of Penzance movie with Kevin Kline as the Pirate King. That's when I learned he could sing, OMG be still my heart.
This is such a guilty pleasure film! Makes little sense, but just far more fun than it has any right to be.
i would never say this is a bad movie. One of my all time favs growing up. I was especially laughing because i watched the movie first and then found your vid!!! i cracked up the whole way!!!!
Lauren Gilreath this is nowhere near as good as Flying High!.
I love these movie watching videos so much,
This is the most honest review of this I have ever seen in my life. Also, props for not spoiling the best joke in the movie ^__^
this movie seems like the kind of thing I would have watched at 1am because of the flu and couldn't decide decades later if I just fever dreamed the whole thing or not.
I just stumbled on your commentary. You are absolutely hilarious. As much as I already loved the movie, your commentary was priceless.
I still quote "end of movie" to this day
Awe I love this movie, great memories with my aunties.
You have the cutest sarcasm I've ever encountered.
Haha this reminds me of Xanadu with the weirdness I love it!
Yes it's campy, and silly but I personally think it's hysterical.
You should see the 1994 version with Jon English, Simon Gallagher and Toni Lamond
One thing my mom always pointed out, during the final number, Happy Ending (which is her favorite song of the film), when the King, Ruth, Mabel and Frederick are backing up after Frederick gives her the ring, you can tell the heat's starting to get to him, he looks like he's about to pass out!
I first saw the pirate movie when I was a kid and I absolutely loved it and didn't get half the jokes. Then I forgot the name and found Pirates of Penzance and watched it thinking it was this. Man was I surprised and confused. I absolutely loved watching your reactions to one of my favorite stupid movies of all time.
One of the most entertaining examples of what the fuckery ever made
In the Pirates of Penzance movie Ruth the nurse maid is played by Angela Landsbury.
Ah! You weren't even born when this was "inflicte"... sorry "released". I worked for a cinema that screened this film (ticket taker/usher) and saw it over and over and over and over... helps that I was totally besotted with Christopher Atkins... he was so damn beautiful (for those of us that love slender, smooth, toned, blonde beach boy-babes)
And the music! Jesus wept. It's 80s on steroids - and yet - it was only the BEGINNING of the 80s! Made in the summer (Australian) of 81/82. First Australian film to get a wide release in the USA. Scored a few Golden Raspberry Awards in 1983 (Worst Song "Pumpin' and Blowin'") and the film was littered with pop culture references - way before the whole "Scary Movie" genre of films parodied current films and trends. It's like a classic English panto - high camp, wavers between traditional (the G&S tunes, and rough story) and "modern". The number of references to Chris Atkins' film career (which was literally "one" - "The Blue Lagoon" - before this).... the loincloth he wore in TBL, and whenever they are having drinks (such as in the sword fight or the love song) those are Blue Lagoon cocktails!
It's priceless. So many bad shots (the sail boat "Mabel" hires is very much tethered to a dock and water is being thrown on her) the sudden changes in lighting from shot to shot, the crazy editing (like, hello - the Maj. Gen's drinking is a BIG thing... but, it's never really brought up until the end. And Ruth's rather icky affection for the boy she helped raise.... what's missing is that the pirates have a "nurse" because they are all orphans (yes, it's sort of mentioned) and the Pirate King forgives and lets orphans go free...)
Australian's second movie musical. (The first came out earlier that year - Gillian Armstrong's brilliantly camp as well "Starstruck")
It's mad, bad but as you say, MMM, it's about having fun. And god, it is fun.
Aww I want the 80s and the ladies.A musical version of jaws would be amazing.Ninjas vs Pirates : The Musical. What about the Old Spice man ? He's sexy and on a horse.
80's spoof movie that was fun to watch
That's what you just watch Man
Gilbert and Sullivan would have written 80s music if they had the chance to. Pumping and Blowing is definitely what they would have written.
Loved this movie as a kid. Up there with Xanadu. One of the best and worst movie musicals ever made in the 80s, and Australian made too so even better.
Trust me, it didn't make sense in 1982, either.
Musical Theatre Mash , You are too young to understand that this is a cult classis comedy musical. This movie is more enjoyable every time you watch it. It really drives me crazy when young people just don't get it, yet they think the world did not exist before they were born.
I find your laugh insanely cute!
I love how he keeps making small (but not so small) gay jokes. I think that it's hilarious.
It was about enjoying urself and had to do with getting a happy ending... It was porn
The police and "tarantara" is G&S and is also used for comic effect in Pirates.
There is a great version of Pirate of Penzance on UA-cam...it is an Austrailian production with Simon Gallaher and Jon English. It's pretty good. And Simon Gallaher's rendition of "Is there not one maiden breast..." is the bomb.
***** Oh, my God, I've seen that! It really is fantastic--the actor playing the Pirate King was hilarious. :)
***** That sounds really good, would you mind giving me a link?
***** *Squee!* I'm so glad to find someone else who has watched the Essgee version of Pirates. I've seen their whole G&S trilogy--Simon Gallagher has the most beautiful tenor voice.
Lamp Troll You can find clips on youtube, but pretty sure the only way to watch the full version is to get a dvd. Here is the production company's store website: www.essgee.com/html/NEWSHOPPINGMALLPAGE1.html
Tahlia Merrill Kirk Wait a second. I think I might have this one! Is it the one where the Pirate King acts like Captain Jack Sparrow?
They won worst musical score, worst original song, and worst director at the Razzies
