"Welcome to Chicago, where the businessmen are florists, and the florists don't sell flowers."
Also, the filmmakers unintentionally made Seymour sympathetic. In the stage version, Seymour is actively working with the plant for his own selfish purposes, therefore justifying his Karmatic Death at the end and playing with the show's theme of the cyclical abuse of power. In the film version success more or less falls in his lap and he's much more a passive victim.
so much this
I love the stage show ending...I love the theatrical cut ending...but I HATE the Director's Cut ending. And this is exactly why.
I have trouble picturing Rick Moranis as any character so selfish. But hey, that may just be me...
VeracityLH Dark Helmet.
Lol... Touché.
I think all theatre nerds should have the empty room voice when they are watching musicals
"Chicago: Where the businessmen are florists, and the florists are murderers."
I think Little Shop of Horrors is really underrated. Especially considering the amount of work that went into making this film. They didn't go to an alley or a bad neighborhood, they built it all. There isn't any CGI like stated in the video. They built the Audrey 2's. They built the store fronts and sets inside of a studio. (007 studio in England for anyone wondering). It's amazing what people don't know.
Fiona dunne cgi didn’t really exist in the form it does now back then
I knew.
Either you were deliriously excited to be in an empty room that had never seen Little Shop of Horrors, or there was something rather stronger than tea in that mug. >.>
You NEED to do that Suddenly Seymour idea, it's hilarious!
Also I'm totally walking into a florist shop and saying that.
"where'd she come from?"
"stage right"
Oh my god tommy
"If Ellen Greene wasn't a performer and worked at McDonalds... that's who'll be taking your order."
Quote of the century
Who is this special quest then? A brother? Friend? Boyfriend? Girlfriend? Ghost? Shadow? Alternate universe Ellen Green? Empty room? We need to know!
...suddenly Seymour.....
...is standing beside him.....
Alternative universe Ellen green. Definitely.
This conversation is golden thank you for this
Probably a piranha plant but who knows?
"where did she come from?"
"stage right."
......
"stage left."
Ugh "Don't Feed The Plants" is my jam. I have it on bread. With tea. It's SO good.
why
asinhendrix DON'T FEED THE PLANTS BUDDUH BUDDUH BUM BUM
Dammit... In the spam of a week, I have become overly addicted to Little Shop of Horrors.
The fact that Frank Oz directed this film is what I personally think made the illusion of Audrey II so great. Since he worked with the Jim Henson Company to make a lot of believable illusions, he is probably what insisted upon the realism of the plant.
The only real issue I ever had with the directors cut ending was how Seymore died. In the original short film, he sacrifices himself to destroy Audrey II. In the Stage version, upon realizing it's plans for world domination, shoots an entire gun clip, makes it eat rat poison, and in a brave (but futile) effort leaps into it's mouth with a knife. In the Frank Oz's directors cut, he just stands there, let's it sing it's song and eat him. No final culmination of everything he's been through, just "Now he's gonna eat me. Okay I guess I'll just stand here"
Thommy2n exactly, if anything they made Seymour more of a wuss.... he was about to jump off a building if Patrick Martin hadn’t randomly hung out on a rooftop..... at least stage Seymour tried to kill it.... in the movie he runs off like a pathetic coward..... makes you hate him even more....
It doesn't follow the plot 100%. It's just that the movie doesn't have a different ending now. Mushnik and Son, Now (It's Just the Gas), and other songs are removed or skimmed down. Mushnik's death is also changed VERY much.
Honestly when Audrey II turns away from Seymour’s non-bloody finger in Grow For Me, he looks pretty scared, like “Oh no, this plant feeds on blood.”
Ellen Greene doesn't have a speech impediment in real life, but she is similar to her character in a lot of ways. And she was in Pushing Daisies. Also, she does recognize that the plant is named after her-
Seymour: "I call it an Audrey II"
Audrey: "After me?"
Seymour: "I hope you don't mind"
Audrey: *high-pitched squeaky noise*
And there are some dead flowers in the shop, and they keep the rest behind in the back, there is a scene back there later in the movie.
And also in the black and white horror movie the dentist and Audrey don't know each other, and their is a police chase scene in the end when they go to hunt Seymour down for killing people, and Audrey doesn't die, but everybody else does.
I don't think Mushnik dies in the 60s movie either. also you'd think they'd want the live flowers to be at the front.
What did we learn?
Don't Feed the Plants.
get it, cause thats the name of the song
...i'll go now
Actually Rick Moranis acted for a long time after "Ghostbusters." Don't forget that the "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" series were made in the 90s. He officially retired in the mid-2000s because, yes, his wife died from cancer and he wanted to take care of his kids.
His last role? Voicing Rutt the moose in "Brother Bear 2." Yup.
Also Little Shop came out in 86 while GB was in 84. Did he really reprise his role in Brother Bear 2?
@@FireBlastStudios He meant Ghostbusters II.
He does occasion jobs , he was just on the Goldberg’s doing his lord helmet role from spaceballs recently
I lowkey ship Mr Mash and the special guest
Abram in Wonderland me too tbh
*The Disembodied Arm
definitely one of my favorite shows. also your empty room is hilarious.
Oh my God, I love this musical and I loved your not-guest. You two are hilarious together. More of not-guest, please!
Audrey II has been a long-time bucket list role of mine, but I've never seen the movie, and now that I've seen the credits, and therefore the film actor, I now believe it is destiny. (look at my name.)
Same here, fellow Levi
can you react to grease 2 the amazing trainwreck it is
+Ryan Meneo
But, I love Grease 2
+Samantha Pidde I didn't say I hated it but it is a guilty pleasure
Also The Apple!
Ryan Meneo I love Grease 2, but it is a train wreck
"You didn't think the plants were going to take over New York?"
Um?
EXCUSE YA (never know), it's Cleveland, Des Moines, Peoria, AND New York.
Please don't hurt me it's just a joke
AND WHERE YOU LIVE!
@@FireBlastStudios In the stage production, it's "And this theater"
"Welcome to Chicago. Where the businessmen are Florists and The Florists put shotguns in their rose cases."
The Roger Corman Little Shop of Horrors wasn't ALL that bad. It had some clever jokes in there. I liked it, myself, but everyone's entitled to their opinions... However, it should be noted that without that little black and white movie, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken wouldn't have gotten their big break, and the Disney Renaissance would be lacking in the music department... or completely nonexistent.
I played Seymour in our school's production of LSoH and it's certainly one of my favourite musicals. Please do more videos with your empty room!
Little Shop of Horrors is MY show
YASSSSSS!!
It's my all time favorite musical and I'm not afraid to admit it.
One thing, the original film didn't have human Audrey get eaten by plant Audrey. At one point, they determine that the buds that the plant has are going to open soon, so they have a broadcast set up to catch when they open... and the blooms look like the people the plant has eaten, causing Seymour to flee.
Also, interesting note on the casting, the actress who played human Audrey played Mrs. Futterman in Gremlins and Gremlins 2 (alongside Dick Miller as Mr. Futterman, who played a character who hung out in the flower shop and ate the flowers all day).
Mark Carpenter I guess Audrey and the flower eating guy decided to get married and change their names ;)
The original Little Shop of Horrors was purposely campy. It was a beatnik film and I believe the producer also did that movie where an artist killed people and accidentally covered them in plaster and someone though it was gorgeous and it got displayed in a gallery etc.
mokana713 Buckets of Blood is the name of that other movie. And yeah, they were both made by the same guy.
I mean,
they're basically the same story.
My dad taped this movie off of TV when I was little. I was allowed to watch this but not Jurassic Park. These kinds of decisions shaped me as an adult.
Now I have to go watch this movie with someone who has no idea what it's about.
Man, movie going audiences are seriously such wimps that they can't even handle an ending where everyone dies?! SMH
God I love this movie. It's everything I thrive on: Comedy, Horror, and ssiiinging
I don't know if you were high through this or you were flirting with your special guest. Either way, you're adorable.
You sound a touch tipsy. And you're adorable. That is all.
Yeah, I was wondering what was in his mug
I love little shop to death. Honestly the movie is just great and is so underrated
The weird thing about this movie is that I like both endings. My favorite songs are cut from the theatrical release version though.
actually ellen created that voice for audrey and every other actress copied. ellen doesn't sound like that in real life
omg! i have to find this cut! do they do the extended "meek shall inherit" with the rick moranis solo?
i bought it at walmart last hallowe'en for $10! unfortunately, it doesn't have the extended solo :( but it was a really good deal. surprisingly inexpensive!
Yeah, I think the extended cut has Somewhere That's Green + Audrey II's takeover. There's deleted scenes (like the extended "Meek") on UA-cam tho.
So is this the boyfriend that's preventing our marriage? lol Great video!
the boy from nc They are dating?
THIS IS MY FAVORITE MUSICAL OF ALL TIME AND I LOVE THE DIRECTORS CUT ENDING
The theatrical release changes kick in just after Seymour rescues Audrey from Audrey II, in that version her wounds are not fatal. They reshot the scene in the alley with Audrey telling Seymour that she had always liked him and the plant had nothing to do with her feelings. They start to sing but they are interrupted by the man offering to sell cuttings of Audrey II (now played by Jim Belushi as the original actor was not available).
Seymour goes back in to fight Audrey II and the “Lean, Green Mother from Outer Space” scene plays out pretty much as in the Directors Cut but includes reaction shots of Audrey as she watches the fight through the window. The big change is after Audrey II causes the roof to collapse on Seymour, instead of crawling out of the debris and being grabbed by the plant, there is a shot of Seymours hands bursting from the debris holding an electrical cable. He uses the cable to electrocute Audrey II, causing it to explode.
Seymour and Audrey embrace and walk off. The film ends with them, as newly weds, happily running into their new home (that looks exactly like the house in the dream sequence from Somewhere thats Green) as the Greek Chorus walk past the camera dressed as bridesmaids. The camera pans down to reveal a new Audrey II, the same size as the original was at the start of the film, that smiles at the audience.
2:08 I love the Actors/Actresses choices they made. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
I'm playing Audrey and I don't know how to do her voice, good God.
...so, two years later, how did you do?
ive been triggered if you watch the featurettes, that's NOT Ellen Greene's real voice!!!!
I prefer the director's cut ending to the theatrical ending. When they finally released it on blu ray it made my life. The original ending hadn't been available for waaaay more than half a decade and I think at one point it was considered lost but I could be wrong.
A Gentleman’s Guide to Floristry and Murder
My school just did this show and I was the small plant (sadly, the puppet didn't let me do kissy faces)
In the Theatrical he didn't axe the plant, not from lack of trying. Much like the director's cut Twoey pants him and collapses the building. Only in this case it was gonna leave him to die. However Seymour electrocutes him. It was in the original he tried to kill it on the inside with a knife, only for it to eat him.
You have no idea how long I have waited for this video. Completely made my day 1 million times better. Thanks Mr. Mash!
Somewhere that's Green AKA Part of Your World
Ive never seen that ending!!! It is too too awesome. They shouldve taken a chance
I love these special guest episodes. You should do more.
So much fun! Awesome that you're a Doctor Who Fan, Mr. Mash!
In the actual theatrical movie Audrey doesn’t die and it goes straight to mean green mother and Seymour kills Audrey II with Electricity
I'm totally inviting my musical theater nerd homies to watch this on halloween (the directors cut of course)
Watching this during quarantine just feels so right.
I really have never known how I've felt about this musical. I just REALLY want to play the dentist!
My favorite movie. I watch this movie almost every day.
Check out Next Stop Greenwich Village and you'll hear Ellen Green with a different voice.
If the Doctor was in this movie, he'd/she'd be the only one actively trying to kill the plant. Because he'd know it's planet, know what it does and wouldn't want Earth to go through with that. Then give a long winded speech to Seymour about his greed.
*Doctor:* I am absolutely amazed and disgusted with you Seymour. You're a nice guy, you had a run of bad luck, I get it. Believe me I do, but those deaths are on you. And for what? A few useless bits of currency and 15 minutes of fame. YOU COULD HAVE DESTROYED THE EARTH WITH THIS THING!!!
Shanethefilmmaker if the Doctor was in it. I'd want him to be David Tennnant. Also he should let Audrey II take over the world!
At the end of the theatrical release they get their little house with the white picket fence. I didn't even know another ending existed before I stared watching this channel.
The "Sudden Seymour" gif/meme idea is hilarious.
That is fascinating that theater makes death more palatable because there's a curtain call. Maybe movies should have that.
Lauren Conrad
They actually did in the original filmed version of The Bad Seed!!
I mean it's not like the actors never did other things after this.
She gets half eaten and Seymour pulls her out of Audrey II and then Mean Green Mother happens to both Audrey the person and Seymour. And eats neither of them.
The suddenly Seymour meme should be a thing
You should do this more often
Ellen Green practiced to speak like that for the movie.
Dude, half a decade? It took 25 years for this version to come out! A quarter of a century! You're cute but, run along home little boy. You're talking out of school.
mookiethevampire you do understand adaptations and the evolution of a story, yeah? No? Ok. It took half a decade to make the musical into a movie. It took 25 years to make the original movie into a musical movie. Your timelines are separate and not comparable.
Brent Norem Yeah, I do, buck. I’m talking about how long it took for the original ending of this, the movie version of the musical, to be replaced and released to the general public. Thanks for playing, though. We’re sending you home with a complimentary can of Turtle Wax.
This is the musical that made me fall in love with musicals (and I think the first musical I ever saw, maybe?)
Please walk in a flower shop and say that
rick moranis and ellen greene's height difference is so cute
Chicago: where the businessmen are florists and the florists dance the cell block tango
I think Audrey's voice is cute. She's a sweetheart.
YOU NEED TO DO THE SUDDENLY SEYMOUR GIFS
3:18 when I was in this show, our director used "The Meek Shall Inherit" to show Seymour killing random people.
Sing it Oprah!!! I died!
So, last fall my local community theater did this, and, because I had helped them before, they just assumed I'd puppet the plants (all 3 sizes not including the puppet Seymour uses.). We did the stage version, which is pretty similar to the director's cut version of the film. At the end my director gave the whole cast a copy of that version of the movie. Except of course me. I was just the plant.
must've sucked playing such a minor character.
8:10 Best line by your special guest "It can smell her butt. She must have pooted."
Piranha plant is in smash ultimate. I main him now
“SING IT OPRAH” I lost my shit
I think Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon were just demons. People who could sing who then died, came back to life and kept their looks and talent and became singing narrators
Love the Mama Rose picture in the back! 😜
Why was the telephone song not included in the movie? I spent ages on synchronization this scene at the Theatre Clwyd production where I was sound creator and operator. Guy🤔
4:28 I think it’s Adorable. 😘😘😘😘🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍😍
Chicago: Where the businessmen are florists, and the florists are singers.
OMG I love empty room with a voice! So funny to hear a first timer watch the musical about a carnivorous plant XD
When I 1st saw that I thought it was Oprah In It. I mean it's unbelievable the resemblance.
"Welcome to Chicago, where the businessmen are florists, and florists make millions!"
When I saw it, the ending was way different!
Yep. This is the directors cut.
Levi Laddon This is the ending that was in the original stage musical. the theatrical movie ending is shit.
Funny thing is, I got an ad with Steve Martin in it right before the video.
Chicago: Where the business men are florists and the florists are businessmen . . .
It’s obvious that your special guest is a Audrey 2
ITS JUST GOTTA BE
Does he know that Ellen doesn't speak like that in real life?
the high school near mines production of this was the first musical i was proper obsessed with
I just booked tickets for the tour of little shop. Very excited. Also, you're so cute!
I'm just going to crack off a bunch of comments here since this musical is my crack. I'm not going to say I wrote fanfiction, but if you find lots of melodramatic stories about Audrey and Seymour, let's just say I might know the writer. ;)
I may steal the idea of the "Suddenly Seymour" gifs to do mini comics. Little Shop week (the 21st/23rd day of the month of September for us fanatics) is coming up, so whyyyyy not? I can imagine Seymour popping up in the middle of Christine and the phantom's boat ride.
The original ending wasn't seen for over ten years, and even then it was a workprint. The Director's Cut was a restoration made for the movie's 25th anniversary in 2012. There are also more deleted scenes that weren't included in the new cut, but you can find them on youtube. Definitely check out "the Meek Shall Inherit" sequence. It's a trip.
Yes, the director's cut starts when Audrey gets eaten. In the theatrical cut Seymour kills Audrey II thanks to a spare electrical wire that falls onto the plant when it pulls the shop down. The chopping up attempt is from the play and the 1960 movie which both the musical and this movie are based on.
- Speakng of which, the original "Little Shop of Horrors" movie has a WAY different ending from either adaptation. In that version Audrey and Mushnik survive but Seymour and the plant don't. The plant also eats more people and can hypnotize Seymour into doing what it wants. They kind of reference this in the stage show when Audrey sings about "voices in her head" telling her to go talk to Seymour. One of the big references in the stage show to the original is that the main characters sing the ending song and their heads appear in red flowers Audrey II grew after Audrey I dies. In the original, the plant blooms flowers that have the faces of each of its meals. That's how people discover Seymour's secret.
I first heard a song from this in fifth grade as well. I believe it was a unit on scatting in music class. I remember going home and asking my dad what little shop of horrors was and he said "it's a horror musical about a piranha plant that eats everyone" that idea scared me so I never looked farther into it.
Did he really say a pirahna plant though?
