    People keep blaming lack of character development on "too many companions" = complete bullshit. Jackie Tyler has more chemistry with 9 and 10 than Yaz has with the Doctor. It isn't how much time, but HOW it is used. More companions is a brilliant opportunity to make the character multidimensional through interactions with different people - but they have to interact for that.

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 2 роки тому +29

      Jackie Tyler wasn't really a companion, but she certainly had chemistry with 9 and 10. She also got some great dialogue and interesting things to do, which Chibnall consistently failed to provide for his main cast.

      @Vidyut_Gore 2 роки тому +45

      @@ftumschk That is exactly my point. Jackie isn't even a companion. Doesn't take much time to make a character immortal. People say River Song should have met 13. She would have hijacked the show and people would have forgotten 13. She isn't a companion either. Less episodes than Jackie, I'd think. I know it's a small detail, but it just speaks to a larger point regarding detail and competent writing in Chibnall's script. They arrive in 1800's China. They make a big point at the start of the episode that they hadn't intended to arrive in 1800's China, and were attempting to go elsewhere. However, despite making this a big part of introducing the Doctor, Dan and Yaz at the start of the episode, The Doctor and Yaz are dressed in period clothing for 1800's China. Why are they dressed like this? They hadn't intended to land here. They didn't know they'd be here. Dan is also dressed like a pirate. Again, they weren't expecting an adventure involving pirates. They had no clue. It's all done purely for the sight gag of Dan, and for cool promo photos of Jodie and Mandip in different outfits. It makes absolutely no sense. There's no reason for any of them to be dressed the way they are, especially after they spend time talking about how they'd arrived in the wrong place and time. It's such sloppy writing and design, and it really winds me up.

    • @blastfromthepast8344

      There is no such thing as a 'cool promo photo' of Mandippy and Jerdeh. They look woefully uncool whatever they are wearing. This era has been a disaster in every sense - not least of all the costumes! Gotta feel sorry for Dan.

      I don't get it at all, part of the fun of the whole "TARDIS ends up in the wrong historical period" is seeing the characters dress up for their intended destination, and thus look completely out of place with their actual location (like how Rose dressed for the 70s in "Tooth and Claw", and had everyone in Victorian Scotland mentioning her being 'naked'). I really don't get why Chibnall didn't take full advantage of this set up and create the hilarious visual of all three of our main characters walking out in stereotypical pirate garb, or something equally ridiculous

    • @jweezy9994
      @jweezy9994 2 роки тому +3

      Maybe they intended on going to a pirate themed costume party at the beach.

    • @irrevenant3
      @irrevenant3 2 роки тому +9

      That's really not that complicated. They unexpectedly arrived in 1800's China and, once there, decided to dress for the occasion.
      EDIT: Nope, I was wrong - she doesn't check what timezone they're in until she exits the TARDIS. Ancient China may still have been the original target, though they ended a few centuries later than planned...

    • @sixstanger00
      @sixstanger00 2 роки тому +11

      @@irrevenant3 So they unexpectedly arrived in 1800s China, and despite not knowing this until *_after_* they stepped out of the TARDIS, they went ahead and dressed for the occasion they didn't yet know about? Also, presumably they already knew they'd be getting into some shenanigans with pirates, too?
      You're right. It's not complicated at all. It's quite clearly poor writing. It's a screenwriting mistake when a character or characters are written in a scene as already being privy to knowledge the plot has not yet revealed to them. The most famous example is in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, when Kenobi, Anakin, and Padme are chasing Count Dooku. Padme falls out of the ship onto the sand dunes, while Kenobi and Anakin continue the pursuit. The next scene shows Dooku arriving at a hangar bay. The next scene after that cuts back to Padme dusting herself off. She then tells a Clone Trooper, "We've got to get to that hangar and stop Count Dooku before it's too late."
      So how does Padme know Dooku went to a hangar? She falls off the ship long before he reaches it.
      In the case of LOTSD, the entire thing was written solely for the sake of the gags; it was not in service to the plot or narrative, because if it were, you would do something similar to what was done in _Marco Polo,_ where the TARDIS crew don period-appropriate clothing AFTER they discover where/when they are.

    Very well said.
    I have seen some people ask why Yas being gay and being killed off is different on twitter so I thought I would give my 2 cents here.
    Bill was a character who happened to be gay, it was one of the first things were learn about her but isn't the only thing about her. We go though Season 10 with her and learn so much about her. In thin ice we see her anger at learning the doctor kills people only to grow as a character and realise he doesn't do it because he doesn't care but because sometimes he has to and she respects how much he values human life after he put them in danger to punch a racist. We then see her do things to save the doctors life in The Pyramid at the End of the World She unknowingly gives up earth to the monks just to save his sight, she tries to correct her mistake in the next episode and helps the doctor revert it. We see the pain she goes though living knowing earth's history is changed and how strongly she stays to her morals, going so far as to try kill the doctor when she is made to believe he wants to stop her. By the time we see her turned into a cyberman in World Enough and Time we care for Bill. She has grown as a character, she has been shown to save the doctors life.
    Yas on the other hand hasn't had this. Her closest thing to growth is demons of the punjab where she goes from "tell me the story" to "I already know it" or learning her backstory in Can you Hear me. Her being gay also comes out of nowhere as we see glimpses of her being romantically interested in Ryan in S11. While of course she could be Bi if it was planned you would have expected to see similar scenes like that between her and the doctor and have her conflicted, the same way Amy was between Rory and the doctor in Amy's Choice.
    When it comes down to it Yas can be explained in full as a police officer who travels with the doctor and is gay. Bill couldn't. While you could say "Bill serves chips and is gay" you would be massively missing much of her character.
    Bill is a character who dies but happened to be gay while Yas is a gay character who dies.
    Of course you could dismiss this but with Chibnal having already done one scene where a character says "I'm gay" and gets killed the "kill the gays" trope feels like it will be repeated.

It makes me bitter and frustrated for ever putting in the effort. Writing something deep and meaningful and consistent is really really hard, but even Chibnalls best episodes immidiately go for exposition over nuance with no interest in making it make sense. Personally I’m not a huge fan of the Silurian redesign because while it definitely looks a lot better, they don’t feel like the Silurians to me, which is why I was excited that the Sea Devils looked very similar to their original counterparts. The Sea Devils have always looked goofy and I can’t imagine them not looking goofy so I struggle to take points off of the episode for that, but the Mario jump was definitely too much even for me.

There aren’t any interesting story developments so it’s not hard, and the less you mention the timeless child the less people will remember it. Tbh, not a lot of people watched the episode in the first place, so I’m sure it’ll be fine. You’ll have a clique of fans who force themselves to like it, but even they will get bored eventually. Realistically, the best that would likely happen is the events would still happen but things like Timeless Child will most certainly be retconed as a result of the Matrix be tampered with by the Master. Fortunately, because the writing was so bad, that means any plotline Chibs came up with during his time as show runner can be retconed easier than he himself can retcon, well... anything.
      Kinda like the continuity between Cars 2 and 3. Cars 2 still happened, but Cars 3 never bothers to call back to the second movie aside from a few characters cameos here and there. Even then the only plot line they kept from the second movie to the third, is Doc being dead. Which was brought up barely in Cars 2.

      Vastra was cool. I'm glad she didn't get dragged into Chibnall's mess. He'd never shut up about her being a lesbian. Moffat conveyed it with class and humour because he actually knows how to write.
      "Good evening. I'm a lizard woman from the dawn of time. And this is my wife."
      That's all you need. The fact that Vastra was banging Jenny wasn't her entire identity. The scene where she wore her veil as a "judgement" whilst talking to Clara after Smith regenerated into Capaldi was a completely unique facet of her personality and it had absolutely nothing to do with her sexuality.
      Steven Moffat's like the George Lucas of Doctor Who. I've always liked him - I'd even go as far as to say he's my favourite screenwriter of all time - but I know he was unappreciated while he was running the show. Fortunately, his work continues to age like fine wine. Except the River Song stuff. Alex Kingston's awesome but River was a Mary Sue and if Alex wasn't so much fun to watch, the character would have been unbearable. However, I think that Moffat's mistakes with River helped him become a better writer in the long run.

I can think of a ton of romances contained within a single episode that I was invested in and were actually convincing thanks to the writing and chemistry. "Under the Lake/Before the Flood" and "Human Nature/The Family of Blood" being prime examples. The two in Voyage of the Damned as well. Hell, even the cold open to "Oxygen" was more convincing and interesting than Yaz & The Doctor.
