I was 21 when Cosmos first aired on PBS in 1980. In 1996 I was accepted to grad school at Cornell. I was so excited about maybe bumping into Carl Sagan. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after I was accepted and before I moved to Ithaca.
The show was incredible, and this music was perfect. It was my introduction to Vangelis and it has stuck in my memory for more than 40 years. A few years later, the music for Blade Runner was perhaps even more perfect.
RIP, sir. Here's hoping your star is somewhere near Carl's.

I remember when I was finishing my physics studies and I carried out experiments listening to Vangelis and when I got home I used to watch Cosmos, with the calm voice of Mr. Sagan. Now, I am finishing my post in solar energy and in another country, far from home, but in the company of Vangelis again (and of course the great Mr. Sagan, since he is one of my scientific references). Like the ancient Greeks, they will be in eternity because of their inspiring work.

A little late, I know, but...
no, it was NOT especially composed for Carl Sagans (a self-declared materialist) "Cosmos"-series ,
but already in 1975 for Vangelis' album with the title "Heaven and Hell" !
In fact NONE of the music of Vangelis Sagan used for his documentary was especially composed for that purpose !
All the pieces were taken from pre-existing albums of Vangelis instead !
So, ironically this music in it's original context has nothing to do with with "universe", "space" or "star dust" !
Quite sly and manipulative from Sagan to use it for his purposes of spreading his materialistic mindset thru his series, which was of course well-made apart from that subliminally ever present undertone,
( "the cosmos is all that was, is and ever will be.." and so on..)
and by doing that totally reprogram the context and the
associations of this music in the minds of the viewers,
      apparently with great success,
as most of the comments under this video prove.....
