Hi. I’m Carl Sagan. This is a place where I often work in Ithaca, New York near a Cornell University. Maybe you can hear, in the background, a 200 foot waterfall right nearby, which is probably - I would guess - a rarity on Mars, even in times of high technology.

I remember when a worker at a classical vinyl store once told me as I was buying two Vangelis Records, ' Oh, he's a hack, no idea why anybody would like him". Never forget that but more importantly, as I was Buying Vangelis records. I think if Vangelis had been born couple hundred years ago he would be one of biggest and popular composers ever. This soundtrack was so beautiful that it became the soundtrack of a never made movie thought about a girl kidnapped. I dreamed of rescuing her at the time. 1985. Ended up she was murdered and that nearly destroyed me. One has hope no matter. The slower gorgeous peice became the soundtrack to her life to this day. Music heals the soul.

It seems that many of Vangelis' works are absolute masterpieces and this one is no exception. I believe that he is one of the greatest musicians in human history. This piece, along with "Alpha" and "Heaven and Hell" are some of the most beautiful tracks of music I've ever had the privilege of listening to, they absolutely touch the part of the mind and soul where curiosity, wonder, imagination, and intelligence lie. As with many other people, I can't even listen to this piece without tearing up, especially around the 2:10 mark onward, it pulls at the strings of the heart. It takes an incredible amount of talent and brilliance to invoke such emotion with just a piece of music. Bravo, Vangelis.
This track reminds me of a certain truth: I've come to learn that everything in life is bittersweet, including life itself, because some day it all comes to and end. Every friendship lost due to people going down their separate paths, every marriage broken due to death or divorce, every accomplishment and achievement eventually forgotten due to the passage of time. Most of us like to comfort ourselves by believing that there is an afterlife where all of these things are eternal - however the reality is that there is no way to know for sure what comes after death.
That being said, it is important to make the absolute most out of life: experience everything you can, learn until your brain can't handle any more, love harder than ever before. Be kind and help others in an effort to make their lives better, and teach others about all the beauty life has to offer. Make someone smile every day.
There is so much out there that we haven't even discovered, so much beauty waiting to be unveiled in the vast universe. Nobody will be able to experience it all. We are but grains of sand in a vast desert.

When I die, and if God exists, I would wish for him to let me see the universe in all its beauty as the lights fade one last time. I think the emotions conveyed in this piece perfectly express my feelings on the Universe.I know there are millions upon millions of beautiful, wondrous things in the Universe (I even think the existence of extraterrestrial life is almost a statistical certainty) that I will never be able to see from Earth and that is quite saddening, but at the same time merely knowing that they exist is uplifting and awe-inspiring.

Knowing the question has an answer but it's hidden to us... the immensity, the almost infinite time lapse (at least from our point of view)... it's makes me feel a mixture of emotions that is so hard to express... from deep sadness to the joy of beauty. Wishing there was something else so that we could know and not just disappear.

This transcendental piece just ensures that we belong to something larger than we can conceive.

The name of the program that he had called "Door of Hope" where people sent a letter to the program, were called and were in the program attempting any dream that they wanted from the simplest to the most difficult (how to find relatives there many years did not see and such). At the end of this program (which expired in 1996), he entered a vignette with a person (an actor of course) as Jesus Christ (identical to it to) with a white light in the background and it looking as if seeing something far away and an announcer read a message like Jesus there he was talking about:
"Peace, love, faith, hope, light and unity. They are not just words. You sure you did everything he could for his fellow men? Think about it, because one day we will meet and I'd love to call you my son."
And while the announcer read the message, he played an excerpt of this music video. The children of the time had to fear the vignette. I already thought she was beautiful.

By phrases like "the cosmos is all that was, is or will be " or " we all are star dust , thru us the cosmos became concious of itself " ( i'm paraphrasing ) he outed himself as the atheist and materialist , you had already described him . Well, that was his right of course ! But using Vangelis' doubtless transcendental music to sneaky lure millions of viewers of the series into this same mentality was quite an audacity and very manipulative imo! It gave me the impression that is was the main intention of the series to lure the viewers into materialitic atheism or at least agnosticism. This subliminally ever present intention spoiled the otherwise well-made "Cosmos"-series for me to some degree .

I always pictured it was the stars, slowly going out, one by one as the sunrises.... or could be them coming out, as the moon rises, but I think sunrise suits the ending chord better... at least that is what my mind sees when I close my eyes and listen....beautiful...thank you!

Not all people have this sensitivity. I feel that way too, listening to music I feel close to God, I can not explain.

(Peace, love, faith, hope, light, union. That are not just words.
Are you sure you did everything you could for another one? Think about it. Cause someday we will find each other. And I want to call you "my son")

i like how you name beethoven and mozart, who are 2 of the biggest composers of all time, then you but grieg in the middle which is nowhere near as known as mozart, bach, beethoven, chopin, schubert, and so on

All of them are the same composer. They play the music of the endless time, the wonder of the Order, the Cosmos. Music is the language of the stars and when someone plays rightly the lines, all of us we can understand the truth for a second.

A youthful fascination with space. Wonderful presentation by Carl sagan. The mars episode captivated me. But the music over the images of the red planet was something I have never forgotten. Thank you sir. You will live on. Thank you for a memory

This is one of those songs that everytime I hear it, not kidding, every single time, I can't help but to tear up. It's really a great song, it brings back personal memories of mine that are both happy and sad but when the song ends, I always come out a stronger person. It makes me feel happy about everything that has happened. How great life can be. Thanks for sharing the video!
