This ensemble's synchronization is so tight, during some passages, it seems like there's just one giant, otherworldly instrument playing.

Ever heard of Alban Berg, now that's a synchronization?

What a start to the greatest series of string quartets by the greatest composer! And played so well.

I love B's music, specially the first and the last ones (early and late works).

Part of the joy of live music is watching the performers. With that in mind: Fire. Your. Camera. Crew. (And editor). Watching this marathon was like watching a concert from partial view seats while on horseback. A stationary single-camera setup would have been preferable.

Beethoven was Beethoven right from the beginning,, , Quartet No. 1 in F Major, Op. 18. His is a distinctive new voice, seemingly unrelated to anything that happened before. He is a lone bright light that only became brighter and finally blinding, in his personal life, deafening. Beautifully played by The Afiara String Quartet.

The #1 was not his first quartet, it was actually the second. The first was #3. Matters of publications in those days.

Thanks for the clarification. Not technically his first but certainly among his very first string quartet utterances, and mightily impressive, all things considered. I'm blown away by how Beethoven's unique genius radiates in his very first quartets. And like winrx, I find this performance mesmerizing, with some new subtlety to admire on every hearing.

Don't get me wrong your comment is beautiful but in a manner that I can not ignore, since it's my job, I would like to review this as there is no ''music'' at least in the first part of his video. Of course they are more relaxed in faster movements but then again it's been always like this, tremendous individual effort, dismisses quality group work.

Der Ton der ersten Violine ist sehr seidig, und die Synchronisierung der vier Spieler ist perfekt. Bis heute die beste live Aufnahme dieses Werks.

This is a splendid version. Using it for some score study. However, I spat out my coffee when I heard the accidental pizz at 6:04. Shows that even these god level musicians can make the odd flub. Gives the rest of us hope. ;) Again, Bravo!

The sound of the first violin is very silky, and the synchronization of the four parts is perfect. So far the best live recording of this work.

Beethoven's string quartets, like his piano sonatas, are like a diary where you can follow the composer's development. Already the first six quartets are great master pieces, far from just imitations of Haydn's style. Here the very first one in a brilliant performance, with marvelous playing and interaction between the players. Wow!

Anybody else notice the similarity between the second movement and the beginning of the Mozart Requiem? just saying...

This one - Belcea Quartet to me had more "Beethoven" feel to it. Much more sensitive I thought.
