Lovely to hear birds singing in the background to the Harp quartet in a performance which ranks with some of the best established quartets. Superb playing by all, but I particularly loved the sound from the inner parts - really present second violin driving things, and wonderful rich viola sound. The first violin's virtuoso technique made the broken chords in the first movement seem like a piece of cake, which they definitely are not! The cellist is great, made everything look so easy.
Totally unknown musicians to this Eurocentric but not any more after this interpretation of op 74. Gripping, brilliant, sonorous, eloquent. Risk taking with the final movement. It reminded me somewhat of the vigour of an Australian Quartet performance from many years ago in which Beethoven's great crescendo was brilliantly handled. The architectural acoustics probably also help the sonority, not that it seemed to need much! Just sufficient reverberation time, some resonance. Very much enjoyed.
This is my first hearing of this work. So the harp is just there for mise-en-scene, and it is actually the two violin imitates the harp sound? If it did not work good, it would have been a 18C version of clickbait.
