The legend never disappoints! If I had a request for apple, it would be great to add a keyboard shortcut to make a marker completed. Super obnoxious to have to have 3 clicks just to mark as completed.
Yeah that would be awesome! Even if you could Cmd + Click on it to change it or something. You can right click and select completed, so you can do it in 2 clicks too 😊
I’m so glad you found the video helpful Michael. Thanks so much for watching! 😄🙏🏼 is there anything else that you’re struggling with that you think would make a good tutorial?
@@Brad_West Thanks for asking Brad and Donna. There are a few things I've be struggling with. Perhaps one or two of these you've already solved? - How to slide a marker? It'd be useful to quickly slide a marker across the timeline, instead of having to cut and paste each time. - Can a hotkey be created to quickly switch between for workspaces? - Is there a list of the history of chronological edits? For a long time, I’ve thought this would be useful across all editing platforms. A list of the last several edits to make sure I didn’t ‘Cmd-Z’ too many times or to undo a single edit a few steps back. - How to copy a transition or solid color background (from Generators) into the Library? I often fade in and out of black or white. Quicker access would be helpful. - Is there a quick key to adjust a keyframe up and down (-/+)? Clicking and dragging to adjust the volume is tedious and hard to match precisely. - Is it possible to save a cluster of edits from the timeline into the Library? For example, an intro background with transitions, music, layers of text & photos, etc… Again for quick ‘cut & paste’ access across projects. - Can audio be faded in a linear / straight line? Using multiple keyframes does the job, but it’s time consuming to line them up to get a gradual volume fade across several seconds. Even so, there tend to be arcs between keyframes. Keep up the great work and excellent tutorials. Take care.
@@riseful Wow! Lots of things. Let me help as best I can. - You can move markers using CommandPost. Watch this: ua-cam.com/video/KWN1mk-138s/v-deo.html - You can create custom shortcuts for different workspaces using the keyboard command editor - Not that I know of, but an edit history would be super handy - I would create a separate FCP library of elements you use often that you can import for any new project. I do something similar with roles. That might help you. Watch this: ua-cam.com/video/fCrUffxS7wY/v-deo.html - No shortcut to adjust an existing audio keyframe that I can think of, but if you hold down Cmd while clicking and dragging, you can adjust the volume in finer increments - Yes, I do this with all my UA-cam videos and with client projects. Simply drag and drop a timeline from that "MASTER" library you create into your new project and voila! - You can add a crossfade to the audio and then in the inspector, set the fade in/out to linear. Hope that helps!
@@Brad_West It was very kind of you to answer all my questions. I didn't expect that! Thank you. - Moveable markers; unfortunately, I'm using a 2010 mac with mac OS High Sierra so it seems CommandPost is not compatible, but I went on the website as you mentioned in you tutorial, found the Terminal command and viola! - I wasn't able to find a way to create shortcuts to my custom Workspaces in the Commands editor (⌥⌘K). It seems there is not an option to do so, only for the Default Workspaces which have shortcuts already. - Crossfading audio.. never thought to do that! Thanks again Brad. Really helpful channel you've created!
@@riseful You can duplicate the keyboard or create a new keyboard layout and from there you should be able to add your own shortcut commands. Glad you were able to set up the moveable markers 😄👊🏼
I used markers in my edit today and OMG!!! The time saved!! Thank you. It's also super handy to just tap "M" as I review the edit to mark the locations for titles and CTA's and such. Thank you so much for helping me be a more efficient solopreneur.
I really don’t take advantage of the index as much as I should, mostly because our main channel is focused on shorter videos like vlogs but I want to get more accustomed to using it for larger projects.
Love the tutorial on straightening & scaling at the end too. Nice. Question -- if you have a clip with detached audio, can you select both of them at the same time and drag them out longer .... or do you have to do one at a time ?
Glad you enjoyed it! You would have to do it one by one, or you can use a neat little hack/trick. Select both clips and hit Ctrl D, then +, then type in how much longer you want to make the clips and it will extend them both. You can do this for as many clips as you can select. Hope that helps!
life saver thanks! While you're here, do you know how to blur out words in an image? We have a company name in one scene that we don't want to be shown. Any way to do this? @@Brad_West
You can add the Gaussian blur effect and use a shape mask to isolate it to that word. If the shot (or the word) moves. You will need to track it. This video will show you how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/OBANKbLvKjs/v-deo.html
Wow! Thanks! You completely demystified markers for me in under 5 minutes! Always wondered how I could make edit notes without resorting pen and paper (my current, haphazard method!) This is gonna work for me, I think!
Great tutorial Brad , thank you. I have one question , if I have one marker on a video clip in the timeline and another marker on a bottom audio file but they are in different positions , and I want to snap these two markers to be aligned (say that I want to sync the video with the audio) is there a way to do this ?
Absolutely! Snapping needs to be turned on. The shortcut for that is N. You'll see the little snapping icon on the top right hand corner of your timeline will turn blue when it's activated. With snapping on, the markers will snap together. 😄👍🏼
@@Brad_West Also, Would You Be So Kind And Assist Me With Your Artist Flair - I Am Enjoying The Draw Mask Tool So Any Advice Would Be Appreciated - Stay Strong Cheers
@@Brad_West awesome. I thought it probably was. I'm guessing you just key framed the relevant axis? Nice video btw. I picked up a few new and useful ways to work with markers and notes. 🤘
It has a “rate” property for each axis which controls how much it moves over time so no need to keyframe 😊 I’m glad you learned something new. Thanks for tuning in to watch 🙏🏼
Another great tutorial, Brad! I really enjoy your tuts because they are concise and to the point. I've been using markers in a different way: when editing a video to music, I place a marker over every beat of the music track, which makes it much easier and faster to sync clips to the beat, especially when "snapping" is turned on as the clip "snaps" to the marker. Two questions for you: 1) why are your clips different colors (blue and magenta)? 2) at 2:26, your instructions to jump to a specific timecode doesn't work for me - any idea why?
Hey Chris! Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos! Yeah using the markers on music to cut to the beat is a great way to use them. I mention that in my “Cut to the Beat” video too 😊 1. I have assigned different roles to different clips. You can do that by right-clicking on a clip and assigning different video and audio roles. 2. Did you click on the time code at the top of the timeline before typing it in and hitting enter? When you click on it, it should show all zeros. 🤔
@@Brad_West Ah, very interesting! I'll be assigning audio and video roles more frequently now as I'll be able to visually identify the roles more quickly. And, with regards to the time code: your instructions to click the time code worked! I thought I was being clever by using the keyboard shortcut CONTROL+D to highlight the time code. Thanks for the quick reply and for answering my questions!! I really do appreciate it :) Keep up the great work!
Yeah roles are really powerful! I’ve been meaning to do a dedicated video on that. I think I need to get on it 😉 The Control + D shortcut will change the duration of the selected clip/s. You can type in the exact duration or hit the plus key before typing in the numbers to extend the duration. Happy to help and I appreciate you watching 😊🙏🏼
Now that’s a feature I would love to see! I’m sure that (for someone who knows how to put some code together) that would be an easy app or plugin to create! 🤔
Didn't know you could double tap M to pull up the marker label. Awesome!

Funny! I'm brushing up on using markers, found your video, and see shots of Budapest in your examples :) Small world!
Nice! I love Budapest 😄🙌🏼
Thanks for the reminder. I use standard makers often but not the “to-do” makers. Thanks again for the quality tut. Have a great day.
