    • @LaBreeceTV

What this channel does is really unprecented. Few if any have attempted to tell the story of a sports venue from start to finish. Wikipedia does an ok job of telling you some of the basic highlights and lots of people have blogs where they extensively talk about the events a venue hosted but anyone rarely tells the full story we do in Modern Ruins. Unfortunately in bringing together information from all the various resources things slip. It hurts when its something obvious or something that people alive/aware during that era would vividly remember, but it happens. I'll look into kerri strugg and the 1996 olympics and the magnificent 7. I do keep notes on things like this in case i decide down the road to remake the video, so thank you for bringing this to my attention.

My high school marching band competed at the Bands of America Super Regionals here in 2016 before it closed. For those who don’t know, it was a pretty big deal to be able to compete at a BOA event. I grew up in Athens, Georgia and remember going to an event at the GWCC when they were building the Dome. I thought it was the most amazing building I'd ever seen. Saw Billy Graham there. Went to a Hawks game there, which was cool.
Then Mercedes-Benz was built and dwarfed it.
Was it an amazing venue? Absolutely. But the new dome is just so much better.

I was at the glorious final game vs the Packers in the NFC Championship. Now that the current venue is a few years old, it ain't all that. The halo video board isn't great, and the opening in the roof looks to be all of about 6 feet in diameter. New venues in LA and Minneapolis have eclipsed Mercedes Benz Stadium in design and aesthetics. And don't get me started on the number of empty seats for each Falcons game. At least when Atlanta United is playing, fans stay put for the duration.

_LaBreece, thanks for a great documentary on the 'old' GA Dome. I went to the first 'official' concert held there back in 1992. It was U2 w/Public Enemy & another band as the opener. I remember that it smelled like a 'new car' inside the dome that night. And U2 always puts on a killer live show (I've seen them 4 times) & this was no different. Thanks._
OK - I found the fact sheet to the dome & it says this:
*"The first headlining concert at the dome was U2’s Zoo TV Tour, which stopped over on Sept. 25, 1992, drawing a crowd of 52,318. Big Audio Dynamite II and Public Enemy were also on the bill."*

It would make sense if the stadiums were not built correctly, but other than that, I don't understand how you could throw away a perfectly fine stadium that could have all those problems fixed with one renovation or two. It's like Globe Life Park in Arlington, that ballpark was closed way to early. I understand the heat problem, but it's not like it lasted all year. I understand that it could be a problem for players, but when players are wanting to join a team, they're gonna want to see if the team will actually win or not if they join, not about how the stadium gets hot for a few weeks. You can compare it to Seinfeld or the Beatles in that Arthur Blank and the GWCCA saw the end before everyone else did. I agree it could have waited, but that is more of an obvioius decision in hindsight because of the pandemic. To be honest, MBS hosts the same or less events than Georgia Dome did. The only big event I feel like that came as result of replacing GD was the super bowl. However, MBS was built to maintain the status quo, and not change the city over again. With the only exception being that it is designed with soccer in mind and is much more catered to soccer teams and fans than GD was in anticipation of bringing the World Cup to the US and being home to the United. One question I do have is what does Allegiant and Sofi have that MBS doesn't that could have justified waiting to build the stadium in terms of amenties and design features.

I lived in Atlanta at the time of Super Bowl XXXIV. The storm knocked out power. I had tickets to the fan fest (or whatever it was called). We took the Metro and got stuck for hours on it because the track froze.

I went there one time to the Peach Bowl. They were already building the new stadium next door. I didn’t see anything wrong with the Georgia Dome. The staff there were incredibly nice and it was clean.

So sad and kinda pissed. I have so many memories at the Georgia Dome, all those different games, HS football, Falcons, Braves, Dawgs, Olympics, wrestling, monster truck shows, etc. But most of all, it's where i proposed to my now wife and where she told me she was pregnant with our first. RIP Georgia Dome.

12:36 Actually the 1999 season was the 2nd year the Tennessee Titans were in Nashville (3rd year overall in Tennessee with the 1st year being in Memphis and the last two being in Nashville) but the 1st year as the Tennessee Titans (previous two years they were the Tennessee Oilers). You're welcome for the correction. :-)

Our high school football team played there three times in the 90's for the state semi-finals. And I got to march on that field via the marching band. Makes me sick that they demolished it.....and they hired the cheapest company they could find to bring it down. And they botched the demolition!
