Debbie looks fantastic here. She was probably touring one of her shows which ran ~2 hours and was in great shape. She clearly danced Johnny into the ground and didn't break a sweat. He was a lifelong smoker and died of respiratory failure years later but it's easy to see that he was already starting to suffer the effects. By contrast, Debbie is so opposed to smoking that NBC cancelled her TV show when she decided to fight them about allowing cigarette advertisements.
I miss Johnny! His late night TV show used to be so great. Lots of laughs and always in good taste. No need for vulgarity. What happened to TV, anyway?
Johnny Carson's prolonged breathlessness after the dance was from emphysema brought on by his heavy smoking habit. Anyone who wonders how that disease manifests itself on the outside would do well to examine this video. Debbie Reynolds did a valiant job of covering up for him with her humorous banter and distracting gestures.
Watch her biography, if you can find it. She had a lot of hurt from husbands, one who gambled away, stole her property by forging papers...but Debbie kept moving forward and had her talents and her good friends and family. She had an amazing life, in spite of adversity.
Eddie Fisher had a screw loose. A cute wife, two cute kids, and he dumped them for a woman who made him her 4th husband (what was your first clue, Eddie?). Over the years, I've heard Debbie say in interviews that one reason she did not initially agree to a divorce was because she knew Elizabeth would get bored with Eddie and toss him off like a rag doll. Debbie was right - that is exactly what happened. RIP Debbie - you deserved better than that from a standpoint of your personal life -- Diane.
Debbie's funniest appearance with Johnny was in the late 1960's when Debbie faked being offend at something Johnny said and walked off the set - followed by the rest of the panel and Ed McMahon, leaving Johnny all alone. When Johnny ran out of things to say he started to do a strip tease, to the waist! A few minutes later, all the members of the panel returned and they ALL (except Debbie) were stripped to the waist! The clip used to be on YT.
Debbie - you are amazing energy - at every age. Hope you are well - thanks for all your work - and all the nights at the DEBBIE REYNOLDS HOTEL/CASINO - was sweet, fun, happy - times - Think of you often -
Johnny was an outstanding dancer. Several times during his prime-time show in the mid 50's and in the first few years of his hosting the Tonight Show he demonstrated this. Of course, as he got older, he did this less.
Wow, those two were really great dancers!! So graceful, but really quick and wonderful foot work!! Johnny and Debbie really had it goin' on! They had to have been in their late 40's to early 50's, makes me think that I should be able to do that at 57, yeah, right!! Luv, luv, luv it!!😊😊😉😉🤣🤣✝️⚜️
Great interview. Debbie is a classic, and still going strong. I would say she was in her early 40's in this interview. She was born in 1932. The gas crisis was going on in the early 70's as I recall. But she is a hoot! And so talented.
Unfortunately we'll never see this full episode in the Antenna reruns because of the music clearance issues. Anything that involves music or the band playing gets cut or replaced.
Johnny was actually a very talented performer - guitar player, singer, dancer, comedian. He hid behind that desk too much, in my opinion. I never got to see him "on stage", but I certainly hope he got to showcase his talents there. Debbie Reynolds had it all, body, face, brains, and talent. Eddie Fisher was an idiot. His daughter wasn't the brightest bulb on the porch, either. RIP, all
Carrie and her mother were so similar both were great. Yes she did drugs but she was open about it and helped people with drug problems and mental health problems... she was bipolar, so before they diagnosed her and gave her real medication she turned to drugs
It's interesting to see this clip as I remember so very well the ABC special Johnny references that showed clips from old movies. I think it was called 'The Movies' and fostered my love of old film. The gas shortage references and the 'back from New York' comment probably refers to her Broadway appearance in 'Irene' which would make this 1973. I'd hoped this clip was one where Johnny asks 'Have you broken any records?" Debbie deadpans: "I've broken some Eddie Fisher records!"
Yes, Johnie loved to dance. What a treat watching Debbie Reynolds dance with him. Ms Reynolds was obviously an exceptional dancer herself. Thank you for sharing this.
Debbie Reynolds is about the cutest thing that ever lived.
Eddie Fisher was dumb. I know Taylor was pretty, but Debbie had it all!

Debbie Reynolds is elegant, humorous, and gorgeous, everthying a real actress should be :)
Thanks for posting this! Just wonderful. Two of the greatest entertainers of all time. Wow.
3:20 Lmao the way Debbie & Johnny rebounded and quickly improvized. That's TRUE talent right there.
I miss Johnny! His late night TV show used to be so great. Lots of laughs and always in good taste. No need for vulgarity. What happened to TV, anyway?
I had no idea he could dance either! I watched him for years growing up and had no idea! Wish I could see more!

Id like to see Jay or Conan or Jimmy Fallon dance like that! Carson was the BEST> The others are just pretenders who make millions for no talent
Debbie is such a sweetheart.....
When America still had some talent.
Class. real class. RIP Debbie Reynolds.
This lady is adorable

can certainly see where Carrie gets her talent from!! --

Rest in Peace, Debbie. You will be missed.
It is amazing how easy it is for her to dance despite it's been years since "Singin In the Rain." RIP - Debbie and Carrie
I think she danced consistently in her Las Vegas shows so was always in shape.
omg I knew Debbie was, but Johnny was such a great dancer!
I love Debbie Reynolds, gonna miss her dearly.

Debbie was one of the group who walked off, but the 'offended' celebrity was Rose Marie.
She moved like the scarecrow in wizard of oz ❤️ so cute.
She moves so clearly.
Debbie - you are amazing energy - at every age.
Hope you are well - thanks for all your work - and all the nights at the DEBBIE REYNOLDS HOTEL/CASINO - was sweet, fun, happy - times -

Debbie Reynolds - so much talent. Adorable.
jitterbugging was the best dance ever
Withering i april 1977 I know it was!! because I was there in the audience!!
@@victorialouden1912 so lucky!!!
I saw Debbie Reynolds at the La Mirada, California [near Orange County] January 2010. SHE was EXCELLENT.
Jitterbug was invented by African Americans! THE LINDY!
Johnny was an outstanding dancer. Several times during his prime-time show in the mid 50's and in the first few years of his hosting the Tonight Show he demonstrated this. Of course, as he got older, he did this less.
She took Johnny's breath away with her Jitterbug, that's a funny video.
When you see her here you can easily imagine HER playing Princess Leah instead of her daughter Carrie!
Debbie would have been perfect because she's a princess, much more so than her daughter
Looked like her so much
Wow, Johnny could dance.
We only did "odd Even" gas days in California in early 1974
Oh boy! Debbie was beautiful in and out, Eddie was stupid, Liz was only beautiful in her face, nothing else.
agreed, Debbie was stunning and was an amazing, unforgettable person
Johnny was prophetic - jitterbug and swing did come back!
Everything that goes around - comes around!!!!!!!
could their ever be another like her?
Thomas Norman ...... Betty White comes close
Debbie talks about this interview in her book, “Make em Laugh”. She is so funny and so talented no one will ever be like her

I didn't know Johnny could dance like that.
So she danced with both Paar and Carson on making her entrance on her Tonight Show appearances. 1960 and 1983.
I think Johnny and Debbie would have made a good couple.
This was great. Thanks for posting.

God Be with U, U BEAUTIFUL SOUL.... Love U Debbie... Peace
They are great movers.
Johnny, Dean, Jerry, Sammy, Frank and Peter Lawford all were the kings of cool. Joey Bishop was like Larry Fine, he was there but not at their level.
I think this episode was during the gas shortage Jimmy Carter was President and I think she said 44 which means the year was 1977. She was 45 on 4/1
I heard her whisper "41" too.
fabulous team here in this one johnny and debbie bet they would have had a great marriage
*Whispers* "41"
"Aaahhh Shut-up!"
LMAO!!!
Unfortunately we'll never see this full episode in the Antenna reruns because of the music clearance issues. Anything that involves music or the band playing gets cut or replaced.
Wow, who knew Johnny could cut a rug!!!! Fun!!!
Really...he barely moved.
He did just fine, especially during the first part..
She's so adorable
Johnny was actually a very talented performer - guitar player, singer, dancer, comedian. He hid behind that desk too much, in my opinion. You’re SO wrong... Carrie was BRILLIANT, and ridiculously funny.
Carrie and her mother were so similar both were great. Yes she did drugs but she was open about it and helped people with drug problems and mental health problems... she was bipolar, so before they diagnosed her and gave her real medication she turned to drugs
She was a beautiful woman even later in her career, a class act all the way. R.I. P., Thanks for the memories.
"I bet it comes back sometime". And how Johnny!
It is so nice that we can revisit those shows where people really was fun to watch !!!

Does anyone know what year this was? I'm guessing '70s but was wondering an exact year.
Teckla Wattman 1974.
Teckla Wattman It was 1973, she was 41 years old, born in '32.
gas wasn't bad in 1977, more like early 74...the gas embargo ended in march 74
BRILLIANT!
Who KNEW???
WOW!!!
Or maybe he was just out of shape at the time. I doubt he had Emphysema here.
She was a great sport and most entertaining.
Eddie Fisher was a dammed fool.
LOVE 💜
Why is the quality of the audio and video so poor?
It's some idiot pointing his phone camera at a screen instead of recording it properly.
and if he had recorded it properly then YT would have taken it down do to copyright infringement and policy
Loved it, but I wish it were louder. Can;t hear what they are saying.
Yuck it is too low, I got up to full sound and it isn't going to hurt my ears.
Wish Johnny had danced longer..
She was actually born in 1932.
She got him out of his chair!
Hilarious!
Wow, these two were pretty hot on that stage.
admire Debbie very much, intelligent, funny as hell, engaging.
Even back then it was about the gas problems but of course it was made political for their wall street buddies crap economy.
Missing this era and the moment watching with my parents. Even though it was late night. If I can just go back in time for just a little while.
I love her. I just bought 3 of her movies. She was so lovely and talented
Class!
When I get the sex change operation I want to be like Debbie Reynolds
Hilarious! I really miss them.
Yes, Johnie loved to dance. What a treat watching Debbie Reynolds dance with him. Ms Reynolds was obviously an exceptional dancer herself. Thank you for sharing this.
Johnny Carson is the greatest
Wonderful!
What happened to the sound?
What year is this?
