I just want to say thank you. Without your generation, I wouldn't have my rights. Without stonewall, and the countless protests and marches for equality, I wouldn't be able to walk down the street holding hands with the love of my life. I wouldn't be able to get married. So thank you. You are all truly brave and inspiring people.
Imagine being in the closet in your youth, then finally coming out as an adult, only to have to go back to pretending once you are in a home for seniors because you're faced with horrible discrimination by your peers all over again at the end of your life.
Airam Soberanes That should be a wake up call to ALL OF US. Of course, there could be many reasons why that is, but still to be aware of that possibility.
alec zavala i know right, when she paused for a moment i just wanted to go through the screen and hug her. elderly people + crying + lgtb+ people hit me right in the feels by themselves, so this was a lot for me
Isabelle Douglas That woman's situation as well as the one from 2:30-2:50 is exactly how my coming out to my dad turned: I was afraid he would hate and he even looked angry when I told him, but he said, "Son, I don't care. How many times in your life have I told you that I love you no matter what? Look, this may or may not be a phase, you're still young and I'd prefer you focus more on your studies, but if one day you find a special someone and that person happens to be a boy, I'll be happy for you" I honestly never expected that from my grouchy dad with a temper, made me realize how much he I underestimated him and how much he truly understands me. It's weird because I expected my mom to be 100% supportive, but she was disappointed. My parents' reactions were polar opposites
These people made it through all the pain, through all the hate, through all the darkness. They truely are resilient ppl who didn't give up on life, they dared to be themselves and fought for dignity and respect. I know that it's because of folks like you who paved the way for us, that we can be who we are today.
That's actually amazing to hear, and very encouraging. I'm 15 and out as gay, and I do drag. And congrats to you and your partner! Honestly my goal in the future is to find a man that makes me happy each and every day
Agreed, I'm 15 and out, and I can't even fathom how these people felt, and I can't even grasp their pain. All I feel is respect, thankfulness, and joy that I can hear their stories so I can appreciate what I have because of them. Truly moving, much like your music 😏
This society and younger LGBT people owe at least that much for these pioneers and founders of our community! Hope many more affordable gay retirement centers will be opened all over USA and Europe and these gay seniors will at least live their last days with dignity and acceptance. Most of them lost their life long partners, they are lonely and in need of medical help. It’s so sad what they were going through their whole life and all the struggles to achieve some level of acceptance, LGBT rights and marriage equality, they deserve spending their last years in safe environment and peace.
Seeing old LGBT people gives me so much hope. You see everyone saying 'wake up it's not the past anymore it's 2017' and acting like no one was LGBT before the 21st century, but they were! We've always existed and people need to see this.
These people are the bravest of the brave. Thank you so much for your courage. I came out in 2000 and have seen the changes since then. Through only in pieces like this can we see the challenges people faced when it was almost unheard of to be gay or lesbian.
My husband and I thank you for paving the way for us. You made our lives so easy compared to yours. I came out in 1982. Although it was very difficult for me to come out, I know it was 1000x harder for you. Thank you all again for being so brave!! All gay individuals today have it a lot easier because of you.
this made me feel so happy, knowing that we're not the only generation going through a "phase", because it isn't one. homosexuality is real, it is valid, and quite frankly, in this video, it is extremely adorable.
can you believe that the people who could have been imprisoned for being gay are still alive today!? we've come so far in so little time. it's mind blowing.
I have met so many men and married men (Married to the opposite sex) that will not come out of the closet. Some go their whole life alone, because they fear coming out..........Life is short, come out and live your authentic true self.
We have forgotten how far we have come in being seen, accepted and even "allowed" and yes, there is still so far yet to go. We are all humans trying to be better, to love one another and to make the world a better place. Thank you for this video and most of all thank you to all of our brothers and sisters who have come before, whose strength, courage and loving presence has helped us to be where we are today.
this is the only issue that ever would make me cry. I HATE homophobic people... I'm a 12 year old lesbian and going through any of this seems unthinkable
There's much to be said in that old saying 'You gotta know where you've come from, to know where you're going too.' I am glad that young LGBTQ people feel they can be open about themselves but I want them to remember it started with these guys. And also not to rest on your laurels - what was so difficult to attain can be easily forgotten. Thank you xxx
I am 80 years old and have lived in the closet since I was 13 years. I come from the background of Jehovah's Witnesses. I love my religion, but I still know that I am gay. DeWayne of Utah
I'm trying to hold it together after watching this but the tears are streaming down my face. I'm sure everybody in Starbuck's thinks I'm insane, and honestly, I don't care. I personally want to thank all of you. In my eyes each one of you are LGBTQ pioneers. I'm taking little bits of each of your stories and weaving them into the fictional novel I'm writing. I would love to interview each one of you. Hugs and kisses XOXOXO.
Fuck- MY HEART. It is so incredibly important that we hear these people. It is so important that we know that not only young people are lgbt. We need to listen and support them, it's because of them that we have our rights. Thank you so much.
So sad most of these wonderful people weren't born later when society could accept them for who they are at a younger age. Hope the best for them, and the people who have supported them! :)
this is truly heart breaking because for many of us lots has changed positively but for so much more lgbtqa people absolutely nothing has changed (being gay in russia, Africa, Asia to name a few) MUCH LOVE to all LGBTQA people
This is why it is so important for our community to know and appreciate our history. If it weren't for folks like these, we would not be where and who we are now. Our debt of gratitude is long standing.
Really needed to see this during the hard year 2020. I'll never stop being me and never stop fighting for us all. Much love to my true ancestors in this video.
This is a beautiful video and I just want to say that I am a 13 year old lesbain. I have not come out to my parents yet, only my closest friends and people online. My parents are super religious and would KILL me if they found out I liked girls. You all are very brave individuals, and I want you to have a great day, Thank you.
Crow Draws..........please be careful. A word of advice: Religious people can become very mean-spirited and violent. Wait until after the age of 18 and have left home completely before your parents find out you’re gay. No need to even tell them really. Straight people figure it out for themselves. In your situation you might think about moving to a distant metropolitan area once you leave home. Family can cause problems if you live close by.
apart of the new generation of lgbtq, i grew up or im still learning ab myself and who i am. i never realized how special i was to be living in this era. in 2020, its still unfortunately terrible for our community. but seeing the history that we have, is truly beautful. i had just found out that im apart of the lgbtq community in may and im still questioning myself. i never realized that growing through my sexuality im very grateful to say these kinds of things and i could get help about my sexuality or my gender identity, many people are so open. watching these people talk about how you couldnt even dance next to them is crazy. most places are not illegal anymore. we stil have to fight but im so proud and thank you to our ancestors. i love you guys.
People who are against equal rights sicken me. Jesus says to love thy neighbor, not thy white strait neighbor! It's against nature? Yeah, you're right, love and equal marriage are against nature... NOT! People who are gay choose to be gay. Please, tell me more about how you remember choosing not to be gay as a child, I sure don't. If there was a hell, would it really mattered who you loved? We are all one family under the same sky.
It’s not only in LA that the older LGBTQ live alone, it’s a shame that our community thinks that after 40, people are too old for it, PLEASE PLEASE look after our seniors we owe so much to each generation of people that come before us and make sure that the last part of life is a worthwhile one and can help so many of us. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for all your hard efforts in your past, without you we will not be able to live without hurt. ❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰🏳️🌈🇬🇧🙏
why does the term 'partner' even exist? if he's your husband/ boyfriend he's exactly that! if she's your wife/ girlfriend she is exactly that! don't cover up for the social aspect. say it as it is. beautiful stories
+zwerrgh The term "partner" wasn't a cover up. Marriage for same-sex partners was illegal until very recently. In the eyes of churches and the law, same-sex wives and husbands didn't exist.
Back then, you couldn't even say partner unless you were around other gays everything was coded! Even today, many of us can't get married because in my case job discrimination (scare of getting fired) have to put getting a marriage license on hold for awhile. We still use the term my "roommate"! I been with my husband for 30 years and cannot tell many people for fear of losing our income! Praying for changes soon!
I am 75, and have struggled all of my life. Now, for the first time in my life, I live in an accepting state where I can be who I am and it is such a relief. My life has been a nightmare, but the road led me to who I am today. I learned that loving others for just being themselves is what is most important. Thank you for this video about other seniors. For so long I felt so alone, but it reminded me that there are millions of us.
I’m a proud lesbian! My fiancée and I are getting married next year and it would not have been possible without the ones that fought for our rights. I cannot express how grateful to have the right to be able to spend my life with this beautiful woman that I love with everything I have. Thank you
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for enduring. Thank you for paving the way, bearing the brunt of the pain, thank you for being authenticly you! I haven't met you, but I love you! By just existing and living my path was made easier! Thank you, with tears in my eyes and joy and greatfulness in my heart, I thank you!
I'm living in a time of such acceptance, so many of my friends are LGBTQ+, but I still struggle with figuring out my identity. The strength of these people who have sorted themselves out in a time of such hatred...amazing.
Touching, very realistic. This should be something every family should watch. If only the teens that are thinking about coming out would watch this. Older gays are so full of knowledge that could help all of us. For the most part, for me, this was a very moving and sad piece.
I love videos like these because they show homophobes that being gay isnt just young teenagers and it gives me hope that LGBT+ people can grow up and live their lives (btw i myself am gay)
I didn't really know how hard it was back then my god, it was horrible I can't imagine how lgbt felt, I feel know more happy and thankfull of how everything is now, it ain't perfect but it's good
It's a lot better than what their generation endured, but I think "good" would be when sexuality and gender are non-issues, so the fight for equality continues. That's why everyone who cares should pay attention to politics, protest, write or call their representatives, and vote against any kind of injustice.
I think of how hard it must have been to come out and be your genuine self at this time, and how lucky I am to be able to love anyone I want. To be with my trans female partner, getting married to her and how we can do that and how there is such a large community and lots of support. It just makes me reflect on how far we have come. I can be myself and love my partner truly because of people who were themselves when it was harder
Broked my heart listening to their stories. Just so frxxking unfair how gay people could be so mistreated. Religions, governments, the average Johns and Joes all have a lot to answer for for the horribly cruel ways they have treated LBGTQ people!
Listening to these early generations and their struggles is encouraging and it gives me a sense of direction. Unfortunately, as LGTBQ plus we sometimes get caught up in the nightlife clubbing and drinking and we forget that existentially it is a lot more fundamental. We still have a lot of work ahead of us. We are just starting. Thanks for the video.
Someone should make an app where young gays can find old gays to live with and accompany each other! A safe place for them Both to live together and share experiences etc
Amen!!!
amen.
Amem

The part where it said that 75% of gay and lesbian seniors in los Ángeles live alone broke my heart
I am 47, and can be attracted to anyone that looks in their mid 30's to their mid 70's. But, I just adore cute senior men.
Imagine being in the closet in your youth, then finally coming out as an adult, only to have to go back to pretending once you are in a home for seniors because you're faced with horrible discrimination by your peers all over again at the end of your life.
fegu I know where I am - Scotland - they had mentioned plans for LGBT senior homes. Don't know how far it got though.
Airam Soberanes that is staggering 😔
Airam Soberanes That should be a wake up call to ALL OF US. Of course, there could be many reasons why that is, but still to be aware of that possibility.
3:13 When she started crying I thought she was going to say her mother never wanted to speak to her again, I'm glad I was dead wrong.

I thought she came out to her children? Didn't she say she couldn't come out to her mom?
"Must be your side of the family, all of mine are men."
"Really? What about your cousin Sidney?" Damn that mom is savage af

I complain about being discriminated now for being gay. And what it's like now is nothing like it was then. These people are honestly so amazing.

Very brave, loving souls. You are an inspiration to all of us.

The only group of elderly people you'll find that actually support lgbt lol

Really liked this but I wish it would have been longer and more in depth. Can anyone lead me to something similar?
when we rise on abc gives a good in depth view i think

that was a beautiful video.
Sending love to lgbt community. With your love and acceptance, you make this world a better place. 👍🏻❤️☮️🌈
I'm living in a time of such acceptance, so many of my friends are LGBTQ+, but I still struggle with figuring out my identity. The strength of these people who have sorted themselves out in a time of such hatred...amazing.
Graciassss
This gave me so much hope
Very moved by these stories! Thanks for uploading. I think gay history is always interesting
Enjoy life ..I hope you all all find peace of mind... so many of my generation didn't make it ..May they all RIP X
She died in '91 from cancer, and yeah, that was a star... irreplaceable. THAT is love
Thank you.
We need to see and hear more videos like this
Touching, very realistic. This should be something every family should watch. If only the teens that are thinking about coming out would watch this. Older gays are so full of knowledge that could help all of us. For the most part, for me, this was a very moving and sad piece.
Thank you so much for helping to build the LGBT community and making it safer for us to be ourselves
I love videos like these because they show homophobes that being gay isnt just young teenagers and it gives me hope that LGBT+ people can grow up and live their lives (btw i myself am gay)
I'm forever thankful
God bless their hearts! Thank you for this video

Great video, dispels the myth that gay people dont live past 40, I am gay and enjoying life finally, I hope everyone gets to as well.
Beautiful and sad, so bittersweet
thank you so much
truly, truly beautiful. you're all so brave.
As a straight male, I thank these beautiful seasoned human beings for fighting for the right to love.

So many beautiful stories. i love this! please do more!
True colours are beautiful
"The only thing that I want to see is that you have happiness, so I don't know what else love is."
Thank you... thank you so much
I just want to hug them.
A safe place for them
Both to live together and share experiences etc
I love all these old people beautiful, sexy, full of life, courageous to share there story
