Instead of hearing/reading endless Mercedes 'horror stories', The Wizard makes an informed, rational comparison video based on his mechanical 'real world' experience ... THANK YOU !!
"DON'T BUY MERCEDES! I HAD A CUSTOMER THAT BOUGHT ONE AND THE ENGINE DIED AT 200 MILES BECAUSE THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON! MERCEDES IS GONNA BE AN ENDLESS MONEY PIT! *BUY A CELICA INSTEAD!*"
I love the car wizard but if you ask me does a mechanic in the middle of kansas have alot of mercedes experience? *chirp* *chirp* move to dallas if you want to learn about Porsche and Mercedes, they are everywhere.
Bought a 2005 S500 4Matic 10 years ago for $14k. It had 104k miles on the odometer. It now has over 200k miles on it and over the 10 year period, I spent about $5-6k in repairs including 2 or 3 sets of tires. $20k, 10 years, 100k miles driving an S500. I call that a deal.
I'm in the market right now for a 12-13 S550. Glad to hear of your great success, however you are telling us in almost 100k mi of ownership, you never had to replace the air suspension or pump? I hear they last between 75k - 100k.
@@chiefhere1968yes avoid the 250 models. C250s have early turbo failures and timing chain problems. We had an 08 C300 which is the same engine in the 2014. Extremely reliable one issue. The only issue was thermostat. The car kept reading low coolant. Very common on this era of Benz
@@747-pilot ...I used to think that way, but The Wizard described some fine examples Mercedes has to offer. Realize that with proper care, most vehicles can last (I know, some are more costly than others) so just get what you want
@@paulmaartin No it won't. A shitty 94 Celica with 135 horsepower isn't even in the same league as the cars Wizard is talking about. Period. End of story.
@@747-pilot Toyota reliability is waaay overhyped. They have issues like every other car. A few years ago people were crashing and dying because Toyota was using defective accelerator pedals. So let's get our facts straight. "Reliable and durable as the sun that rises every morning" is a stretch. Is Toyota more reliable than Mercedes? Yes. There, I said it. Is Mercedes unreliable poorly-built German trash? Hard no. Only someone with absolutely zero knowledge about cars would be stupid enough to say that. As far as safety, Toyota doesn't even come close to matching Mercedes or any other European brand. European cars have a reputation for being over-engineered and that's true. They have a lot of gizmos that break and cost a lot to fix, but they also engineer the safest cars in the world. If you want safety, it has to be Mercedes or Volvo hands down. And Lexus figured out how to build luxury cars by copying Benz and BMW. Which is great for soccer moms and real estate agents. But for car enthusiasts, Lexus won't cut it. Bye.
I've owned an 06 E500 and currently have a 2013 S550. The 06 began to suffer from the brittle wiring issue and I got rid of it. On the S550 I've had to replace the front air ride for about $1600. These have been great cars. Big, fast, silent. My tip? always look for the last year of a model run. Most things have been perfected and you get a price break if the new model is out on the market.
@@Funktastico I don't think so, I had an 1988 SDL that had no wiring issues at 300K. Check Mercedes Eco wiring- biodegradable wiring harnesses from 1991-1996.
Exactly, that goes to most brands too. The first facelift and new engine aren’t perfected as much, it’s towards the end of the cycle of that model is when it’s really good because everything is upgraded.
The new ones have to be lease only. The Wizard atleast showed which old Benzes are good buys. And Scotty is for people who want a reliable and simple car and nothing else. If you want reliable and cheap, go to Scotty. If you want to impress others, lease cars (especially 1st year models). If you want to impress yourself, Wizard's at your help to actually own and drive a nice Benz.
Your spot on wizard. Owning a shop for 15 years I've worked on and have fixed many different Mercedes models. I 100 percent agree with your recommendations. Nice job 🖒I'll back that 100 %.
Max Martin the AMG packages are mostly just aesthetically different (bumpers and such), and suspensions bits. I’m gonna say whatever that applies to the regular models should apply to the car with the amg package. Now amg VERSIONS are a completely different car.
IMO, if daily driver resale value is $3k but repair is $2k, I'd fix especially if the car is paid in full, beats another 3 to 5 years in car and higher insurance payments and or the risk in buying another used car. Bottom line, know your vehicles potential trouble spots and proactively address them. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance.
I bought an '03 lexus ES with 150K for $3400, and dumped far more into it than what I paid; suspension work, timing belt, things that wear out with that mileage. 2 years later, with 230K, it still looks and drives like a new car, minus a tear in the driver seat bolster. It's actually worth more than what I paid for it. The average ask for this car in far worse condition than mine is $4. Can't find any of these in the same condition for sale; there's tons of them on the road, and when I see one, I ask the owner how many miles. Almost always over 250K.
You think $2000 is the end of the repairs? That $2000 is just the beginning. Being a Benz that constantly breaks, be prepared to spend a few more thousand dollars. Hemce why its called an endless money pit

@@MV-nt4bq still loving it. No issues as of yet. Mostly garage kept. But i make a point to drive it weekly for a little (sunday driving). I hear that letting it sit too long will cause issues.

I have a 2011 E350 (not 4 Matic, less moving parts is good especially here in AZ) and its been a solid car so far! Spark plugs were a breeze to do myself too. Some things you have to take in to the dealer like changing the transmission fluid because it has to be put back in at a certain temp...but overall, I love this car!
I have a friend who is a top tech at the dealer, and he thinks that the W212 is the best E Class they have ever made. I'm still a bit ambivalent; having had to jack up the car, remove the fender lining just to replace the Windshield Washer tank, but I am keeping an open mind. I started out favoring my W210 E430 but now it is 50-50, so I guess the W212 is moving up ;-)
Came here mostly to get an opinion on the 07-13 S550.. but this guy got me paused at the 89-02 SL.. I own two 97’s… probably the best cars I’ve ever owned.. convertible top is not a problem. Spent $600 on hydraulic cylinder rebuild, did the replacements myself, pretty easy. Worst part is just the aged leather and plastics, but can’t really do anything about it, nothing lasts forever. Surprisingly good for a 25 year old car
My 2010 E350 rwd is currently clocking at 170,000 miles. No mechanical problems other than having serpentine pulley fail on me. No leaks of any type so far besides my washer fluid reservoir is shot so that doesn’t hold any liquid.

This is 100% correct. The 2003-2006 E-Class is an incredible buy. They are reliable, powerful, have great interiors, and MB just warrantied the SBC brake system for 25 years as well!
@@bradh6185 2006 and up, you can tell it's a facelift from the sharper front end styling, taillights on the sedan (maybe wagon as well idk) and an updated steering wheel, wasn't a big styling update exactly haha I've seen 2006's that weren't facelifts so if you're looking for one to buy be wary of that.
I’ve been looking for this exact comment. I saw a green 09 350 with mag appearance package and the beige interior. For 13k seems like a steal. Better than trying to be a used civic for 15-20 k. Used with 50k+miles lol thank you wizards comment section!!!
Yeah, I don't get why they cost so much. I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole. The Murcielagos in particular are not even good looking cars, to my eyes. The Gallardo and Huracan are way better looking IMO.

2010 E350 - bought with 150k and full service history, I know who maintained it for the last 8 years. Owned for 2 years now with another 20k. Fantastic car for £4k.
@@RothBeyondTheGrave Private sale through my mechanic who did the service work on it as soon as the dealer warranty was up for the last 8 years. Its the E350 AMG Avant Garde so it's pretty specd up. The vast majority of the of the mileage was 88k on the motorway everyday to an office and back so ideal mileage for a V6, not stop start shit at low revs. Back seats looked like the had never been sat in! Will easily make 300k if not 500k, unless I have an crash its emission regs that kills this car.....4k was a bargain as this was a 53k car in 2010, I had a lucky day getting this.
Wow my 2002 E320 4Matic on has 155,000 and I bought it in 2016 with 140,000 is that young or something?? for a car almost 20 years old or is 150k alot for a 2010?? I get told by mechanics I have a really nice well built mercedes and to stay away from the new ones because they have alot of problems. I've put some money into it for petty issues to be expected after 17+ years of aging and they said its well worth it because the engine is beautiful I'm only the second owner.. The W210s were built sturdy I've hit a deer going 40 and it threw the deer like a bouncy call and left me with a minor scuff when had I hit that deer in my brothers newer benz going the same speed it would have take the bumper off because technically as hard as I ran into the deer it should have F**** my car up.. My girlfriend has a Hyundia and that would have destroyed her front end.. After that day I realized what a tank these frames are for older Mercedes I feel safe in my car plus im surrounded by air bags in a crash which for 2002 was ahead of its time on that feature.
I owned my W203 for over 3 years and it was really good and reliable car. Its got OM611 220cdi 105kw almost no money spent on engine only maintenance like glow plugs oil ang belt. Only thing that keeps breaking is the motors directing air vents. Its easy fix but takes a bit longer to dismantle the dasboard. Otherwise its really cheap to maintain almot bullet proof. Bigest downside is rust which can be prevented if you choose healthy one to start with. The interior looks dated and maybe cheap but does not creak as much as newer cars.
Have a 2014 E63 AMG wagon... Here it is 9 years later... still smile when I drive it... still get waves from car guys. If you’re looking at the E class, look out for the SBC. The control module has a pre-set number of brake pedal depresses and then the system has to be replaced. In the US they’re under a 25 year warranty, but elsewhere around the world we’re not so lucky. I’ve not had to deal with the one on mine, but do some googling! Apparently when you hit the 300,000 depresses you get a warning on the display and complete brake failure!
@@williambrandt9254 it’s Sensotronic brake control. Essentially it’s a smart brake assist. It’s a very clever system, but has a number of faults, which has been a pain in MB’s side

Almost everything you recommended is too new for me to even consider lol! I’d be interested in a video like this that covered “Budget German cars” like $3000 under 1985-2000, those are the cars that interest me and that I can afford to buy and work on myself. I have a 1989 CE 300 and a 1991 420 SEL, paid $1,200 for the coupe and $500 for the S-Class, both need some work but parts are darn near as cheap as for an old Ford or Chevy and they are super easy to work on.
Another excellent buy is the W212 E-Class Pre-facelift, especially model years 2012 and 2013. Assembled in Germany, and excellent ratings on consumer reports.
Thanks Car Wizard. Owned a 300E, E430 and a CLK500 (those M113 blocks are superb!), so I know the Mercedes experience. Just bought a 2008 C300 going on your recommendation. Happy miles ahead!
I actually had a w203 c class with the 2.0 kompressor for a few years. It had only 1 problem-the godawful ESP. It worked only for 3 moths and that's it, nothing helped. Otherwise it was really cheap to keep and was surprisingly nice on the highway. With a set of more sporty tires and wheels and coilovers ,she cornered quite nicely.
A BMW version of this should be in order. I almost bought a 60,000-mile 2012 BMW 750i the other day up until the mechanic from the shop literally ran up to me and said to avoid buying that car at all costs. I left the dealer and went to the forums to find out the N63 engine is on a soft recall with the turbochargers and the valve stem seals and BMW refuses to inform their owners. Glad I followed the mechanic's advice. Time to buy an S550!
Fam, always do research on the car you want before going out and buying. Look for the common problems, etc.. It's all out there in the internet. Glad you dodged that bullet. That mechanic was looking out for you. lol
I looked at a 2016 BMW 5 Series 528i with the 2.0 engine with turbo a few weeks ago. It was at a BMW dealership. Didn't buy it even though it was in awesome shape.
with regards to the pre-facelift e-class they had big problems with the sbc pumps and they are the ones that should be avoided. the later facelift model had essentially none to minimal known problems. the suspension bushes wore out quicker than normal but that's about it. the diesel engines especially the early straight 6 and the later v6 diesels were bulletproof. very well equipped very comfortable and surprisingly good on fuel.
MB extended the warranty of the SBC till 2030. Have there been failures? Absolutely. Have there been braking failures in other autos? Absolutely. The fact of the matter lies with the notion that MB crated a system that wasn't measurable for wear and therefore had to implement a questionable means of using an activation counter limit. In almost all cases one can use a simple diag tool to fetch the current SBC activation count to get an idea of approximate state of the SBC. The v6 diesels have not shown the track record that the inline ones have: the om647 in Sprinters (same as the om648 less a cylinder) have racked up tons of miles- they are workhorses; the v6 engines are swamped with emissions crap. "Bulletproof" is NOT a word that should be used to describe the v6 diesels: if utilized an maintained correctly they are good engines but they're not in the same league as the inline ones.
Hmm, the early model gasoline engines don't have the balance shaft gear issues that the later m112/m113 are known for. I think that's worth factoring in too.
Got myself a 2010 C300. Damn near bullet proof. Not a daily driver. So it has been rather pampered. Has under 88k miles. And only 2 cosmetic flaws. Otherwise an excellent car if you want to slide into an affordable Mercedes. Very impressed with these entry level Benz's. Next is another C300 and its BIG brother the C63 AMG. And my tiny Benz collection will be complete. Great vid and informative content brother! Thanks!
I drive a 2001 c200 kompressor, currently sitting on 270,000kms, no issues so far besides sway bar linkages. Thats my cheap daily benz and i must have gotten lucky with it because its been great and held up good inside and out. My other car is a 1978 w116 280se, that too is a gem, although starting to get a little tired haha!
In Australia they're crazy expensive compared to the lower models, I have a C180 'supersport' which is cosmetically similar to C55 but has the glacially slow M271 engine. I paid 7k aud for it while similar c55s in similar condition with similar kays were selling for 25k. 18k for an extra 4 cylinders ffs.
Mark Temperley The W203 is actually pretty solid and well built. Soft touch materials, almost no plastic (apart from the climate control/navi). Great sound insulation, affordable to maintain and some say it is very similar compared to the W211 E-class in ride comfort. I despise the W204 C-class because it just looks cheap with all that plastic (before the facelift). It is as if Mercedes cut corners when building it..
The W211 E-Class after the facelift (2006-2009) is actually a good reliable car, but with the 3.5L V6 engine. The facelift took out the faulty air suspention and it is a reliable car.
The W211 V6 engines which have the m272 engine generally need the balancer shaft done eventually.....which can be costly. Also like OP said, faulty air suspension, also, esp unit, sbc unit.
I would point your attention to om 642 engine. It's a 3 litre V6 turbo with enough torque. In Europe we can get this engine in the facelifted w211 and the w204 with a 6 manual.I have driven one quite a lot. It's a cracking car, with smooth shifts and a huge amount of low end torque.
The Mercedes that have the 550 (388hp) M273 engine have a lot of issues until June/July of 2008, after those dates they fixed the issues that you mentioned with timing chains and so on and are pretty bulletproof. I have a 2008 December CLS 550 with 260k miles on it - engine runs smooth, doesn't consume oil and is out of any serious issues. The engine has 80 more horsepower than the previous 500 (306hp) M113 engine, and consumes a bit less fuel, which is because of the newer technology of the motor.
Great video ! But you will preferrably want a facelifted W212 E class in that middle category: the 550 is a V8 powerhouse and perfect as a sedan or coupe if you want to spoil yourself (no need for an AMG) 😀! Otherwise the 400 V6 is a smooth and subtle engine for a more practical wagon ...
I love seeing that E21 in the background, same color as mine, would love to hear more thoughts on that generation. Really enjoyed the standalone video you did on it.
Thank you for this Mercedes-Benz review! In 2018 I had the opportunity to purchase a 2004 E320 with 126,000 miles on her at a very low price. Before I bought it Mercedes-Benz covered the replacement of the SBC Braking System and the Gas Tank through a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty. In the 5+ years that I've had the car I've had to do some maintenance to it almost every year but the car still drives and handles much better than a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. The Japanese do make very reliable cars but in my experience Mercedes-Benz and BMW automobiles are much more fun and engaging to drive. Thank you for your reviews they are much appreciated!
FYI.. I have a 04 E500. Mercedes extended the warranty for the SBC brake system. It’s a free fix! I just had mine replaced a few month ago. Car is pushing 230,000 miles and runs great.
On the E-class you're recomending a car with SBC which is known to go bad 100% of the times over a car that does not have it. If you want a reliable W211 the best option is the E320 gasoline option from 2007-2009. V6 230 hp 0 reliability issues, no SBC, buy it with coventional suspension (not airmatic) and it is a bulletproof car overall. You can go to the 320 cdi but keep in mind these engines will suffer oil leaks from the oil cooler (all of them, 100% of the engines, sooner or later). It is a 10 hour job and if your mechanic is the car wizard, of course you will pay more than the car is worth, but otherwise great engines and great cars.

Your recommendation helps in my decision on purchasing it as I work on my own vehicles as well. Thanks Car Wizard!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the Wizard because he’s not biased. Scotty Kilmer is the most BS and biased idiot out there. It’s like “I’m sorry Scotty but I’m not going to buy a silver 1994 Toyota Celica”
@@kingjlinza He's really not. All the people that have said he's biased have (obviously) been pissed off by something that he said because he speaks the truth. Why do people still watch Scotty Kilmer? I used be obsessed with him until I started working on cars and realized he has probably the worst videos on youtube. He once made a 5 minute video on how to change a clutch, seriously?!?! People only like him for his repetitiveness, personality, and hardcore condemnation of everything. But once you get working on cars, learn more, see other UA-cam channels, you’ll be like wow this dude just yells and flails his arms all day and doesn’t teach anything.

@@DeadofWinter321 trust me... keep digging in the UA-cam auto world... you’ll see. it does take years of Scotty (watched him for around 3 years) to realize he doesn’t offer anything special to advance your knowledge of cars or how to work on them. of course, he is right that any toyota and a honda with a standard trans is bulletproof, and that cars like fiat’s are disasters, but you could’ve found that out from your local mechanic.
@@hotlunch4415 I'd say it was partnering with chrysler. all mercs were pretty much bullet proof until then, even the AMGs. I have no source but I heard someone at chrysler essentially told them they would make a lot more money doing parts and repairs if they under-engineered the cars instead of over-engineering them to be ultra reliable. sell more cars that way as well. I see more 90s mercedes still on the road where I live than 2000s models
@Mike I've had 2 AMGs and they both needed constant maintenance. I still talk to the guy I sold my last one to (06 CLS 55) and he's done the airbags 2 or 3 times, couple window regulators, transmission, gaskets etc and hes only put 15k on it in 4 years. The one I had before that was an 04 CL 55 and the hydraulics were constantly blowing on that too. I have an audi s7 now with an apr stage 2 tune and I've had zero problems with it in 3 years.
To add my two cents, I own a 01 s500. It’s had its fair share of problems but it’s genuinely the best car I’ve ever owned. It’s got amazing speed, comfort, and it’s decently sporty. Can keep up with modern cars, sports or otherwise in both function and speed. But like this wonderful video mentioned, you’ll 100% have issues you never thought would happen due to the electrical components. When I first got my car, shortly after it went into limp mode. I took it to Mercedes and a few other shops who all tried to charge me 6k for a new transmission. Luckily I kept looking around because my now go to shop looked at it for a day and said the transmission just needed to be recoded. Paid 1k and the car drove like new. If you ever get an s class from these years, expect the pse pump(soft close) to go out, at least 1 airbag suspension to go out(1k a corner), ABS light will probably turn on, etc. They just get problems with age. Luckily there is an amazing forum that will always answer you within the day about any problems or questions you have and can probably tell you exactly what you need to do to fix it. If you have the means to, I’d highly recommend an s class from this gen.
I feel that you painted the E class with to broad a stroke. The E 350 is pretty solid. They did have manifold flap issues. I had the 2008 4- matic and really liked it. The quality was really good. I had been driving Volkswagen Passats since 2001 and I felt like the E 350 was a bigger, quieter, more powerful version of the VW. I have a 2010 S Class for about 4 years and it has been relatively trouble-free. I do agree the the 2000-07 C Class were garbage. I looked at one when I was car shopping. The VW Passat and C class had the same sticker. I asked myself would I rather have a cheap-looking 4cyl Mercedes, or a top of the line v6 5 spd manual VW Passat. Those MB's from that area were all Chrysler quality materials and workmanship.
I had a 2003 Mercedes C240, never had any problems at all in 3 years, I even drove for Uber and Lyft in it. Only sold it because Uber wanted me to get a newer car :/
I had a 2005 C230 kompressor with a 6-speed bought it with 165,000 mi and no service records. Took a shot on it because it was cheap, when I traded it in and it had 265,000 miles and today is one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned I loved it
I have a 2003 CL 500 and absolutely love the car. 74,000 miles. Had the ABC deleted to coil overs and has been an amazing car. Almost the same thing as the E-500 you talked about. Definitely bulletproof cars.

Exactly, just think of this as a $5k car. Some of the times it's actually worth it.

What is the "SBC"?
@@williambrandt9254 it’s Sensotronic brake control.
Essentially it’s a smart brake assist. It’s controls the ABS and does clever stuff to work out how much braking force each wheel needs, but you can also put it in “hold” mode which will keep the brakes applied if you’re stationary and “stop” mode which will apply the brakes if you take your foot off the accelerator at less than 30mph.
It’s a very clever system, but has a number of faults, which has been a pain in MB’s side

That mechanic was looking out for you. lol

with regards to the pre-facelift e-class they had big problems with the sbc pumps and they are the ones that should be avoided. the later facelift model had essentially none to minimal known problems. the suspension bushes wore out quicker than normal but that's about it. the diesel engines especially the early straight 6 and the later v6 diesels were bulletproof. very well equipped very comfortable and surprisingly good on fuel.
Hi, what year models are you pertaining? Thanks!
@@Nver91hes pertaining to the w211 07-09 diesels. Post facelift.
Mercedes has three "E"s in it and they all pronounced differently.
Not if you pronounce it correctly.

W211 is the best e class ever
W211 e350’s have optional air suspension but the w211 e500 & e550 have airmatic as standard
Isn't the W211 basically a Dodge Charger with a Mercedes body?
The W211 V6 engines which have the m272 engine generally need the balancer shaft done eventually.....which can be costly. Also like OP said, faulty air suspension, also, esp unit, sbc unit.
What about the E280 with the 3.0L V6 ? I think it was only offered in Europe.

This definitely helped me out. Just bought an 06 E500.

@@hootans.4293 not true at all that engine is very reliable the only thing thats gonna give him trouble is the SBC system and airmatic
SBC isn’t a major concern anymore, MB extended the warranty on SBC by 25 years
What about CLS models ? Like between 2008 and 2015 ? what would be the better choice the facelift or the old one ?
