    I've been homeless myself 3 times so far and about to be again. I just wish people would know that not all homeless people are drug addicts and alcoholics. I got depressed when I lost my son. I have decided if I ever get in the position to do so, I want to help the homeless

      I don't know if this will give you some strength but please try thinking on a global scale
      You are not homeless
      Let me explain
      There's people living in parts of Africa in mud huts bamboo leaves huts are they homeless people living in caves in Afghanistan are they homeless people living in teepees in parts of Siberia Russia where it's very cold are they homeless the difference between us and them is that they hunt for their food and we don't
      We wasn't put on mother earth to pay bills every 30 days if birds/deers could talk would they say that they are homeless it's all on your outlook on things
      Peace and blessings to you

    I feel for those people. Being homeless is not what it sounds like. People work day and night to keep themselves alive. They may not have the best environments to thrive in, but they still manage to live day by day as if it would be their last.

    I am from Sacramento and can offer some perspective. Apartments *start* at $1000 a month, a lot of working people, especially ones with kids, cannot afford an apartment. We have a lot of working people who are struggling to pay rent, we have a number of working people---like some in this video---who are houseless because of how expensive it is.

    • @lindamorgenstern1460
      @lindamorgenstern1460 Рік тому +4

      Absolutely! I’m on the east coast and rents are astronomical here too. There are no apartments here for less than 1000 to 1200 a month. It’s so out of wack! How a can people maintain!

      If you really want to help, you will find a way to get there. I drove from Utah to California, Portland, and then Seattle to help people. It's actually a blessing and an adventure to be able to help the less fortunate.
      It's going to get worse if they don't step up and create housing.

      Building affordable housing, especially for disabled people,senior citizens, veterans,working class renters- all who make up a lot of the homeless population,seniors most definitely- need affordable housing,as there's a permanent housing shortage. Been this way 42+ years now. Since 1980. With all the millions of people who got here or were born since that year, a mass building campaign is LONG overdue !! The best way to help homelessness and help homeless people, is to lobby both City And politicians, and demand that housing actually. must get built right away ! It's way cheaper than jails, shelters and agencies. Studies prove this. Most people really hate being homeless. Few actually choose to be homeless. Not all homeless people are drug addicts and drinkers. Or crazy. It's stereotyping and bigotry to claim that ALL homeless people are criminals.

    Not one single person living in the U.S should be homeless. Unacceptable and it breaks my heart. We have our noses stuck in other countries businesses and we are sending billions elsewhere. We have to take care of home first and if there are extras you send those to aid other countries. There is so much unused land that could be used as homeless camps. Provide pods with beds, air and heat and a community shower. Ridiculous. Shame on us.

    I love this concept, if the government refuses to be part of the solution, we should come together to find our own solution. Personally, a dream of mine is to create a tiny home community for the homeless that is self governed and somewhat self sufficient. Homelessness is the true epidemic in our country. As the rich get richer, more and more Americans are becoming homeless. Most of us are one paycheck, one life changing incident away, from being on the streets. Things desperately need to change. I go to work and find my coworkers van parked in the lot with their family inside of it, out in the Florida heat, while he is inside working. It’s not right. Everywhere I go there are people living in their cars. It’s not just Cali, it’s everywhere.

    They need to at least get a public tap and picnic tables in there;
    Plus, there get some public restrooms and showers would be so helpful.
    Haul water in five or ten gallon jugs until then.
    They should save up for a couple large solar panels each to at least charge their phones.

I`ve never seen that in the UK but it might be our future as our health and social care industry collapses and gets completely privatised. I understand this type of leverage to get those RVs that are not structural safe and those creating a huge fire hazard or dumping there waste in anything other than a sewer system, but they need to have exemptions for those that are safe livable conditions. I don’t understand why being poor is stigmatized-what people should fear or condemn is poor CHARACTER, not a lack of financial means. There are lots of hard-working, intelligent, capable people who have never had agency in life, SOLELY due to being born into poverty. They don’t know how to mobilize themselves above a working class existence, BUT they will always have their aptitudes and strength & beauty of character.
    Conversely, some people who have money are the epitome of evil and all things demonic, yet somehow, society perversely correlates big bank accounts w/ high worth as a human. 😢

    I'm curious; Are there any expectations or goals towards rehabilitation? I like the idea of a homeless community coming together to make a safer place, but what is the endgame with this system? I know they say they're going to embarrass the government by doing what the gov can't, and as a government hater I always love to see that ambition. The reality of the problem is that they're still completely reliant on donations, and I don't see any coherent plan for the peoples' upward progression. If these shelters aren't used as a transitionary step on their ladder upwards, the people will continue to live there which would essentially become their home. Which then of course keeps that spot taken up for anyone else who could be trying to climb themselves out of the hole.

      @InvisiblePeople  Рік тому +5

      Chris, with all due respect - GOALS OF REHABILITATION? Homelessness is NOT a character flaw. For every $100 increase in median rent, homelessness increases 9%. Most people using drugs and drinking live in apartments and houses. The cities with the highest drug use DO NOT have the highest homelessness, however, where rents are skyrocketing - homelessness grows!

    • @Chris.Holcomb
      @Chris.Holcomb Рік тому

      @@InvisiblePeople Rehabilitation is a word that covers far more than just drugs. Just as hospitals rehabilitate injured patients to move freely again, and animal rescue rehabilitates wildlife to survive on it's own, these people need a plan of action to restore their independence. That's what I'm curious about. I know that rent is ridiculous, and everyone knows the government is more useless than the Apple watch. Waiting on the government to set things straight is essentially hopeless. So what other plans are taking place to step these people up into their own homes?

    • @InvisiblePeople
      @InvisiblePeople  Рік тому +4

      @@Chris.Holcomb, with all seriousness, if we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to grow. Then we have computers killing jobs. I was in an airport last week that had an automatic floor sweeper going around the terminal. We have a perfect storm of homelessness coming. Yes, the government is stuck on stupid, but there is no other way to change policy.

    This is one time where I am going to sound like Mark. I love that this camp exists but this is still "CAMPING!" This is NOT a solution to Homelessness. This is a dime store band aid on an aortic bleed. Mark is right when he says the solution to people camping is HOUSING! This sanctioned self governed camp while nice is still painfully unacceptable. This is a sanctioned toilet hidden out of sight and out of mind of safely housed voters. I call this camp a hallow victory. Don't get me wrong this place IS GOOD. My question: Given resources our nation could bring to helping homeless folk, IS THIS GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED RESPONSE TO STREET HOMELESSNESS GOOD ENOUGH? I answer, HELL NO! I HATE sounding like Mark but THIS HAD TO BE SAID!

    • @InvisiblePeople
      @InvisiblePeople  Рік тому +12

      Folks at Camp Resolution will tell you they need housing, and a big part of this camp is protesting to get housing. None of these camps, sanctioned or not, should exist. What I do love about this is it shows that homeless people can organize and, given the resources, can create a temporary solution.
      Have you noticed you’ve been agreeing with me more and more? :)

      @@InvisiblePeople I'm a law and order guy. I think the world should have rules and order. I believe in strict personal responsibility. That said since watching Invisible People and reading your newsletter I have moderated my stance. YES I read and study every article. Mark since reading \ watching Invisible People, I've seen folks DYING, literally DYING on my streets. I've seen guys enter homelessness big, strong, tall, robust in body, sharp in mind, eyes bright. I've watched their bodies waste away, legs broken, crutches stolen, no shirts, dirty, eating from trash cans. YES Mark I see myself thinking more like you because, watching healthy people get sick and die of street homelessness changes even a cold hearted pragmatic autistic werewolf like me. Also states \ cities criminalizing homelessness to the point of abusing the poor has become immoral and disgusting to me.
      I watched an online court room recently and a man was homeless, mentally ill and angry. The judge was so cruel to him and pretended he did not notice the man was homeless. The judge was so callous to this poor homeless old man that it broke my heart. This poor little old homeless man really did need help not handcuffs. All the judge could focus on was how would he get to court for his sentencing and could he find $250 bond. The man told the judge he was homeless. Mark seeing stuff like that changed me. Watching so many literally die on the street dude it HURTS when you open your eyes and see the pain, the death and the foolishness governments respond with.
      Mark I also have a confession. I was on a NIH autism funding panel once. They were dividing up millions for autism related programs. I spoke up weakly for autistic people who were homeless and or in prison where poor autistics end up. This skinny lady shut me down and at the time because I just wasn't sure about if their was any autistic homelessness. Now thanks to my work and InvIsible People I know better. I hate myself for not standing up for poor street homeless and imprisoned autistics back then. Mark thanks to you I am armed with facts today that will let me stand strong up for street homeless autistics and homeless people in general. Invisible People is teaching me to be a better advocate and for that I must THANK YOU MARK KIND SIR!

    if only any of these comments had to live directly next to this camp which isn’t fit for human habitation and deal with the consequences of having this directly next to their neighborhood as i do, these videos will always make it seem like these communities are well oiled machines when in fact it perpetuates the issues that are already going on in the disadvantaged community of old north sacramento

    • @InvisiblePeople
      @InvisiblePeople  8 місяців тому

      Name one suburb that’s a well oiled machine, and everyone gets along and police are never called? Humans are humans. The truth is, this, Camp, shouldn’t exist at all. The solution is housing!
      I would add, people that are homeless are going through layers upon layers of trauma, and it just really sucks living outside. If you were homeless, how would you behave? I’m not justifying bad behavior. Just trying to put it into perspective.
