When Merry Clayton stepped in for Aretha Franklin in the voice recording session of the Stones album in the Los Angeles Sunset Sound Recorders and Elektra Studios in October 1969, she was heavily pregnant. And she as devastated when hear voice cracked in here superior performance in the first take of the Gimme Shelter recording. When she asked Mick Jagger to re-record hear voice, Jagger demanded that she included the “crack-in-hear-voce” in the re-recording. Merry Clayton and Aretha Franklin are the best female singers ever.
I have been a music fan since a Sunday night in February 1964. And in my opinion this is the greatest rock and roll song ever. It STILL has meaning. It is timeless........
He said LOVE NOT WAR is just a kiss away at the end. You had mentioned war is a kiss away. The whole point is war is a shot but love is only a kiss. Get it? Enjoyed your reaction.
"Gimme Shelter" is arguably The Rolling Stones greatest song -- and that's saying something because their catalog is deep and full of classic songs -- "(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction", "Paint It Black", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Angie", "Wild Horses", "Brown Sugar", "Beast of Burden", "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and more. If you listen closely when Merry Clayton's voice cracks you can hear Mick Jagger shout "woah" in the background. "Ooh, see the fire is sweeping \ Our very street today \ Burns like a red coal carpet \ Mad bull lost your way" -- The mad bull is the USA carpet bombing Vietnam. Look up Operation Rolling Thunder for details. Merry Clayton nails it even when her voice cracks! And those snare hits that kick the song off, wow! Charlie Watts, RIP!
The intro is positively eerie and Merry Clayton's vocals are fantastic the cracking voice is probably the climax of the song. This is close to my favorite Stones song along with Satisfaction because Satisfaction displays "attitude".
A lot of reaction videos are wastes of everybody's time, but it's clear you're a deep soul who could actually plug into the emotion of the piece. As you said, you could feel it in the voices AND the instruments. Nice job! Not every Stones song is like this, of course. "Sympathy for the Devil" was probably even more ambitious, with the lyrical contents and the groove.
You should also listen to "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place by The Animals. It wasn't about the Vietnam war but was the unofficial anthem of the soldiers. Also check out "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton.
War children refers to many of the British invasion and being born in the early 1940s as Germany had been bombing the UK during WWII. They grew up to their later teens and twenties only to be engulfed in Vietnam.
The Stones are still Rolling! The drummer Charlie Watts passed away recently. Their friend Steve Jordan stepped in on drums, and I believe they just finished a world tour and are working on new music.
Thank you for researching before listening . to me it makes a difference when knowing what the song is about .your beauty first attracted me , your knowledge and passion for music keeps me coming back. another one by these guys you'd like is Can't You Hear Me Knockin . please consider it . thank you
Hi! Gimme Shelter. Great song, released as the opening track from The Rolling Stones 1969 album Let it Bleed. For me the best song from this album. Honky Tonk Vomen. Another great song. For me Top 10 song by The Rolling Stones - The Last Time. (1965) Thanks MrsPenPal for your The Rolling Stones reaction! 🎸🎤🙂
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is probably my favorite Stones song. Martin Scorsese uses their music in his movies a lot. It fits his settings, themes, and moods perfectly. He used "Gimme Shelter" for key scenes in both Goodfellas and The Departed.
Probably one of the best intros to any song ever written, absolutely love Gimme Shelter, I used to listen to it a lot during my LSD fuelled days back in the day ! but that`s another story.
Two lovely Rolling Stones ballads worthy of attention would be: "Wild Horses" or "Angie". The Stones were versatile and composted in different styles. For a jazz infused monster masterpiece, you might enjoy "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", one of the best studio jam sessions in history. 🎸🤩😁👼
I’ve always liked this song, yet I never knew it was about the Vietnam War. But I think my favorite part of it is the strong backing female vocalist- the way she lets out those powerful, wailing high notes.
Hello Blessing. Yes, the Rolling Stones. One of the very early bands i was growing up with. Too young to understand the lyrics but i loved the growe. 😎 If you find the time, please listen to the Velvet Underground, Venus in furs, another track from this aera. Never stop singing! 🔥❤🔥
My guess is that their point is that both war and love aren't that far away from us. We can choose one or the other. Some people think that the UN is worthless but the truth is that we had two world wars within a period of 25 years and over 90 million people died during them. But since the UN was formed we've had no world wars. We've had wars but nothing that escalated to the point before. We can choose either peace or war. War or love. It's all just a shot or a kiss away.
I'm glad you appreciated the song so much, Blessing. I need to correct a small little misquote you made at the end saying, " 'War' is just a kiss away" ... the correct lyric (as written in the song) is "'Love' is just a kiss away." Big difference. Mick is contrasting the world of war and the world of love ... telling us the choice so close either way and it is up to us to choose. I agree with you that wars abound today ... even more than they did in the 1960s. The military/industrial complex now controls the United States political system, and it's very challenging to stand for peace amidst that powerful, moneyed interest. 😟
Please react to some Bishop Briggs! The Way I Do, River, Love on The Brain and So Tied Up with Cold War Kids and White Flag! You will be amazed by her voice and no one Reacts to her shockingly! 💖
IF U EQ YOURE STEREO OR WHATEVER U HAVE ......LISTEN VERY VERY CLOSE ..THE SECOND HER VOICE BROKE AT4:32 You will Hear a Guy make the "whoa" sound .its immidietly after her voice cracks

The problem that The Beatles have, historically, is that they don’t have any songs that even come close to the powerful awesomeness of Gimme Shelter and Sympathy For The Devil

"Sad Piece, but a Masterpiece." Wow...might be the best description of this song I have heard. Well Done!!!
Thanks F.Murphy 🌟

War children refers to many of the British invasion and being born in the early 1940s as Germany had been bombing the UK during WWII. They grew up to their later teens and twenties only to be engulfed in Vietnam.
Merry still gives me chills
The opening by Keith Richards is classic

You should relisten to Merry Clayton's vocal again especially when she hits an octave higher! Search for her isolated vocal

Me too. But kind of obvious when someone mentions it
I don't think it was specifically about Vietnam. Keith Richards wrote it after being caught in a heavy rainstorm.
