What many folks don't know is, not only was Merry awakened in the middle of the night to sing this part, but she was also eight months pregnant at the time!
@@frankiek2269 I know people like to add to the lore of making “Gimme Shelter,” but Merry’s miscarriage had nothing to do with it. I recall reading in Rolling Stone magazine a few ages ago, someone was talking with some backing singers who performed live with numerous artists. One of them said that some artists wanted them to hit certain notes while others wanted more attitude. But with the Stones it was ALL attitude. Good video. Good reaction. 🥰
Maggie, at 9:25 of your video, you hear her voice crack (when she says murder) and then you hear Mick yell "Whoo!". (Because of the cracking) When the Stones recorded this, they called her down to the studio at 4am. When she arrived, they couldn't hear her knocking on the big door. It was so big, she had trouble opening it. Then, she put her all into the song. As noted by her cracking voice. Well, she was pregnant at the time. She has stated that she doesn't know if it was the heavy door that she had to open or if it was the intense singing, but the next day (or 2 days later) she lost sher baby. She never blamed anything or anyone and never felt ill-will towards anything or anyone.
Someone spliced in some clips from "Twenty feet from stardom" where Mick and Merry went back to the studio and listened to isolated vocals and reminisced about the recording of the song.
The documentary 20 Feet From Stardom is very good. Nice to see the faces and stories behind some of the best vocalists most people have never heard of.
Merry Clayton's guest "background" vocal here is generally considered the best of all time. The story I heard was that the Stones were doing the original recording very late at night and Mick decided he needed a female to sing a part that he was suddenly inspired to include. Merry was awakened out of a deep sleep with a phone call urging her to get dressed and down to the studio because she was desperately needed . . . The rest is rock history!
@@shinrugal I just found out that she lost her child to a miscarriage the next day. She said this in an interview: “We lost a little girl. It took me years and years and years to get over that. You had all this success with Gimme Shelter and you had the heartbreak with this song. It left a dark taste in my mouth. It was a rough, rough time.”
While her vocals are indeed awesome, there are many many great backgroud singers who were equally good at there craft. What is the best cannot be answered obviousely because that has everyting to do with personal taste. I always loved Elvis background singers a lot!
Merry Clayton gave one of the best background vocals in rock history with this song. Another one that I found amazingly creative is Clare Torry singing Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky".
There's a great high-quality live performance of the Stones doing the song titled "The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter @ Glastonbury 2013". It is a joy to watch. The brilliant singer doing Merry Clayton's part is Lisa Fisher. There's also a good quality video titled "Watch Keith Richards Play 'Gimme Shelter' at the Apollo Theater" where Keith performs the song live with his X-Pensive Winos band & guests in at a benefit for Merry Clayton who had in a horrific car crash in 2014 that resulted in the loss of her legs.
There isnt much of Merry Clayton's solo work on UA-cam sadly, but, Southern Man is, it's well worth a look. Twenty Feet From Stardom is also well worth your time, excellent documentary.
notice how young the Stone's were here.....the was a recording of the Who's rock opera "Tommy", that was done with the London Symphony, featuring other artists coming in in the various roles.....Merry did "The Acid Queen" (Tina Turner did that role in the movie)
In the 70s there was a recording of the rock opera Tommy featuring the London Symphony Orchestrra and assorted guest artists that included Rod Stewart, Steve Winwood, Ringo Starr, Maggie Bell, and Richard Harris -- Merry Clayton sang the role of the Acid Queen and her version was fantastic! Right up there with Tina Turner's.
Nice my dear, one of the most Ikonic songs and performances of it, this band never mails it in, just the greatest band in Rock History, the Beatles may be better in the eyes of some but the Stones had a way longer career, were an arena/stadium attraction for almost 60 years and continue to this day, it is amazing they still tour and sound great and have made new music in this century. There is a cover of this song on a show called 'Rockquiz' from Australia. at the end of the show a Time Rogers and Vika Bull sing this song, in which Vike just blow the Stones version right out of the water!
